COURSE OUTLINE

NAME OF PROGRAMME: Co-Curricular Courses

COURSE CODE & TITLE: COCR 1030 – Technology Literacy

NO. OF CREDITS: Three (3)

LEVEL: One (1)

PREREQUISITES: None

INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION: Name: Mr. Clive Lashley Email: [email protected] Contact: 662-2002 ext. 83229

COURSE RATIONALE

Over the years in which we have been teaching the Microsoft Office Co-curricular programme at the IT Academy, and providing technology support to students at Campus IT Services (CITS), we have seen many students struggle for lack of Technology Literacy skills, now considered a basic skill set in navigating today’s technology enabled world. Employers increasingly expect people entering the workforce to have basic computer and software skills. Individuals lacking such skills, and a way to obtain them, are at an increasing disadvantage. This is especially a challenge for mature students who did may not have benefitted from technology in their homes and classrooms during their earlier years.

COURSE LEVEL OUTCOMES This course is intended to enable students to: 1. Use common computer terminology and describe common computer components and functions. 2. Identify and compare features of different types of computers and how they relate to productivity. 3. Use Windows to manage files and folders and perform basic computer operations. 4. Describe basic Internet and World Wide Web terminologies and use a web browser to conduct

research, navigate the web, and perform transactions over the Internet such as ecommerce. 5. Identify the features and bandwidth considerations of different types of Internet connections.

Page 2: THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES ST. AUGUSTINE · THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES ST. AUGUSTINE ... Explain how instant messaging works. ... Identify the various legal concerns

6. Communicate via the Internet using instant messaging, online communities and email. 7. Perform basic tasks in productivity programs, such as word processors, spreadsheets, and

presentation programs. 8. Describe computer security and privacy considerations; 9. Identify the primary risks to computers and data, the steps to minimize these risks and ways to secure

online & network transactions, email and instant messaging transactions. 10. Explain issues in computer ethics such as intellectual property and copyright considerations. 11. Describe emerging technologies such as Social Media and Mobile Web.

ASSIGNMENTS In-course assessments represent 100% of the marks.

COURSE ASSESSMENT 1. Four (4) Online Quizzes:

i. Computer Basics – 15% ii. The Internet & the World Wide Web – 15%

iii. Productivity Programs – 15% iv. Computer Security and Privacy – 15%

Each of the quizzes will consist of 30 questions selected from a database of questions. Quizzes will involve multiple choice, multiple selection, matching, list ordering etc. Each quiz must be completed in 60 minutes. 2. Group Project – 20% Students will be required to work in groups to conduct research and present their findings on the chosen topic by operating software which they were taught to use in this course. Accordingly, the group presentation will enable students to practically apply what they’ve learnt towards assessment. Marks will be assigned for the Group Project as follows:

• 20% - assigned by peers in the group for participation in research project • 30% - effective use of PowerPoint and associated technology in communicating ideas • 50% - content of presentation, and depth and relevance of research conducted by the group

3. Attendance – 20%

EVALUATION

Students will assess the course and facilities, and make suggestions for change using an online survey tool called Zoomerang. This method will further enforce their computer and technology use, which is the goal of the course, and will conform to how we already assess the existing Co-curricular technology courses.

TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES

Since this course is Co-curricular in nature, class sessions will be scheduled in 3 hour timeslots to facilitate discussion, group work, practice, quizzes. Learning to use a computer is a very practical matter. Instructional strategies will include but may not be limited to:

Page 3: THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES ST. AUGUSTINE · THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES ST. AUGUSTINE ... Explain how instant messaging works. ... Identify the various legal concerns

• Lecture • Demonstration • Practice

• Problem Solving • Discussion

• Simulations

• Learning Groups • Computer assisted instruction • Homework

Students will be assigned exercises to integrate learning, to be completed in the classroom under observation by the instructor. In this way, the instructor can observe and note areas for further work, and help slower students seal learning. Exercises, reading and group work will also be assigned for outside of the computer lab for reinforcement.

RESOURCES

• Microsoft Digital Literacy Curriculum • UWI Training Materials for Enterprise Systems • Online Typing Tutor • CITS Computer Labs in LRC for Hands-on Training • Computer components for practical teaching
