From the Pastor

28 Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Jesus, Matthew 11:2830

For many of us summer is a time for rest. Summer vacations, being outdoors, visiting familyall these moments can give us muchneeded time for rest. Yet too often we come back more tired than when we went! Our anxieties and our sins don’t take a vacation even if we do. All of us, all year long, are weary and carrying heavy burdens.

So Jesus calls us to rest, and promises to give us a rest we cannot find anywhere else. And we find that rest by coming to him.

We come to him by gathering around Word and Sacrament on Sunday mornings, by learning from him in study and prayer, and by following him and serving others, a yoke which while costly is easy and light.

Come and rest this summer, come to Jesus and find rest. Worship. Study. Follow. Read within to find your way to come to him this summer. And “you will find rest for your souls.”

Even In Summer, There is Fellowship!

Yes, the coffee urns are on vacation until the summer. But fellowship is not on vacation – just taking things a bit lighter. After church there will be iced tea, lemonade and fruit juices, cookies and coffee cakes, …and maybe a surprise or two.

Work Party Thanks On Saturday, June 4 we held the second Trinity Fix Up day. This time the results are more visible – just look at all of the wrought iron railings around the church. The rust and flaking paint is gone and now they look as good as new ! I would like to thank the following people who provided their help: Doug Golden, Kent Golden, Luke Thompson, Roger Parks, Carl Roehrich, Siyoung Yu and Jamie Holowaty, and Bob deLaubell. Also thanks to Pat Sundermann who provided drinks and munchies to keep us going.

Thank You!

Dear Friends at Trinity, I would like to thank everyone who prayed, visited, called, emailed or sent cards to me in the days before, during and after my major surgery. I did not expect such an outpouring of concern from so many people. Gradually, I have been able to return to most of my activities. My deepest appreciation goes to Pastor Mills who was able to relieve me of all the stress that I had experienced due to mistakes and omissions that my doctor had made. I had been told that I might have had a heart attack and needed to have a nuclear stress test and echocardiogram to make sure that the operation could take place. Fortunately, they showed that was not the case. Pastor Mills showed much love and compassion with his healing prayers and blessings. Without his help, I would have been a nervous wreck. Pastor asked me to let him know what time I had to be in the hospital and sure enough he came 30 minutes after I had checked in and stayed until just before I left for the operating room. He visited me several times in the week that I was hospitalized and gave me communion on Sunday afternoon. We are indeed fortunate to have him serving us here at Trinity. Most Sincerely, Richard Werner

Dehumidifier Needed

Trinity is in need of a dehumidifier for the downstairs ladies room. If anyone has one they would like to donate, please call the church office to make arrangements.

LCW July Service Project

All women of Trinity are invited to join the LCW on their July service project. No sewing skills are needed to help assemble "Mending Kits" for Seafarers. Join in the fun at Carol Lee Robinson's house (167 Highland Ave., Hamden) on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 2:00pm.

Invasion of the Bloodsuckers Bedbugs and Beyond! In case you are looking for a place to go this summer (or just wondering why you may not have seen me lately), my latest exhibit is now open at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven. This exhibit is all about various bloodsuckers like bedbugs, ticks, lice, etc. (I know pretty creepy), and I created a touch screen game to add a little fun to it.

If you are interested, you can play the game online and view other details here: http://www.goldenmultimedia.com/bloodsuckers.ht ml Or of course visit the museum for the best experience: http://peabody.yale.edu/exhibits/invasion bloodsuckersbedbugsandbeyond

There are some great models of bloodsuckers and even some live bedbugs on display. Kent

Operation Christmas Child Our theme for the month of July is puppy dog tails, relating to what little boys are made of. Thus we are looking for items a boy would like to receive such as toy cars and trucks, small balls. A reminder no warlike items are allowed. August is dental hygiene month and we are looking for donations of toothpaste and tooth brushes. We need one of each of these for each shoe box we pack. Let us always remember that the children whose lives we bless through this ministry are indeed Children of the Heavenly Father and we are his Disciples doing his will in his Holy name. Have a safe and enjoyable summer

New England Synod Assembly

Can you imagine 600 Lutherans all wearing "DO WHAT MATTERS" tshirts spreading out through the city of Springfield MA? Having attended many synod assemblies over the years I thought I really knew what to expect when almost 600 pastors and delegates from the New England states gathered in Springfield, MA for our annual assembly. Boy, was I surprised! I had a hint that things would be different when I received an email telling me that I had been assigned to a group that would dig and plant a memorial garden at the Friends of the Homeless shelter. I was told to bring shovels, rakes, and garden tools with me. We spent Saturday at the shelter meeting with the director who spoke with us and gave us a tour of the facility. This was a state of the art, brand new building that could house 32 women in a safe environment, small apartments for others getting back on their feet, medical facilities especially for the dispensing of medications, classes on computers and job counseling, and a large commercial kitchen that fed up to 100 people 3 meals a day. We were very impressed. We then worked very hard digging in hard dirt and rocks to plant a weeping cherry tree, and other flowers along with a memorial stone dedicated "In memory of those men and women whose life journeys passed this way. They are remembered by their friends here at FOH." Our planting was interspersed with Bible readings and prayer. Later we had a dedication ceremony along with shelter staff and clients. It was a very rewarding day!

Other people were assigned to mission projects that dug a community garden, repaired and replaced roofs, sang at homes for the elderly, cooked at shelters, painted houses and helped with clean up from the tornado that had swept through Springfield

2 day before. Others who were unable to go out worked on knitting projects and attended workshops. WOW 600 very tired Lutherans! We also gathered for worship, business sessions, 2 Keynote speakers, meals, graduation of the Lay School of Ministry and a concert from Ball in the House. It was a great assembly.

Seafarers and International House

Recently the M/V Queen Busan was docked in New Haven unloading salt and then loading scrap that would eventually go to Turkey. I spent a lot of time with this crew of 19; a Korean captain and engineer and 17 Filipinos. We did a lot of shopping, not so much to buy things but as a way for these men to get away from the ship for awhile, to walk on land, to see children and families, even to enjoy a hamburger at McDonald's. Being in port for 10 days meant that we had a lot of time to talk about life at sea, wives, children, parents left at home, hopes and fears. These men were able to use our cell phones, phonecards, and wifi to skype, email and facebook. They enjoyed your gifts of cookies, magazines, playing cards, nuts and candy. "Where do these things come from?", they ask me. I tell them that they come from wonderful people who pray for them and want to thank them for the sacrifices they make to bring us the things we all enjoy from all over the world. We do it because God tells us this is what we should do.

The Queen Busan left New Haven and went to Newark to finish loading. They were very surprised when I boarded the ship there. "Mommy, how did you get here?", I was asked over and over. On arrival at the ship I learned that the 2nd Officer had just received word that his brother had passed away. He would not be able to go home for the funeral but he was able with speak with his family using our phones and wifi. We were able to pray with him and share in his grief as he told us stories about his brother and the sadness he felt that he would not be able to say goodbye to him.

The mood on the ship was naturally very low. Men that had just finished dinner didn't seem to know what to do with themselves. They were not in the mood for a trip to the mall so I suggested that they

might like to go to see the Statue of Liberty. "Oh Mommy could we? I've waited all my life to see the Lady!"

This is a picture of these men literally jumping for joy, they are in a beautiful park with green grass, they have seen the Statue, they can see the Brooklyn Bridge and the skyline of Manhattan. They have taken many pictures and they are so grateful. On their behalf and on behalf of all the seafarers we visit, I thank you for your continued generous support of Seafarers & International House and this amazing ministry. Ruth Setaro Port Chaplain
