Introduction

This story was written almost 25 years ago. I had read abook for children about the martial arts. Its focus was thechild who had been beaten finally getting strong enough andbeating the bullies.

What I was learning in Aikido was proving so valuable forme that I decided maybe I could share something of it. So Iwrote this story.

Chas did the first few drawings 20 years ago. It took me thelast 20 to finally get him to do the rest of the drawings. That's my fault really, not his. And then it took me fiveyears to get it into digital form.

We just finished adding the last four pictures. So here is thebook that I have been waiting so long to share with you.

Aikido & The Power of Harmony: In the Transformation ofEgbert.

Please feel free to send it to anyone or send people to theweb site where people can download it for free.

It was Friday and Egbert was mad. Hewas mad at his parents. Why didn't theyname him something else?

He was mad at himself for being achicken when the other kids teased him.

He decided the next time anyone madefun of his name, he would punch them.

It didn't take long. At lunch onMonday, it started again. Two boyswalked by where he had gone to sit alone. One of the kids called him "Egg Salad".Then the other called him "Yolk Bert"because he was yellow. Then the first onesaid, "If I had a name like Egbert, I'dchange it".

He was mad, but he was scaredbecause they were both bigger.

When the second boy said "What'syour mother's name? Chickenbert?”Egbert totally lost his temper.

Before anyone could believe what he'ddone, he jumped up and hit the boy andknocked him down.

Both of the children were stunned. Bythe time the boy stood up and hadrecovered enough to be angry, a teachercame over and Egbert was taken to theprincipal's office.

He had to stay after school because theprincipal didn't think calling someone aname was reason to hit them. That wasonly the beginning of his trouble. Hemissed the bus and had to walk home, alone. Guess who was waiting for him?

The two boys he had fought werewaiting for him. A friend had joinedthem. The one he had hit had a black eye.

Now Egbert was really scared. Hestarted to run. He could hear theirfootsteps getting closer behind him.

Suddenly he felt a hand grab his shirt. He struggled to get free but couldn't.

The three kids stood around him. Hisheart beat so hard it sounded like drumsto him. The one he had hit stepped closer.

He pushed Egbert with both hands sohard Egbert fell down.

He was afraid to get up. He wanted tocry and might have when he heardsomeone yell, "Stop it!"

Egbert and the three boys turned andlooked at the girl who said it.

She was bigger than Egbert, but notmuch, and smaller than the two biggerboys.

She walked into the circle in front ofEgbert. One of the boys yelled, “Get lost!”and tried to push her away.

Just as he did, she turned quickly tothe side and pushed down on his arm. Tohis surprise, he found himself on theground.

She took a step back but didn't seemscared. "Leave him alone!" As she said it,one of the other boys grabbed her by thearm.

She quickly grabbed him with herother hand and, turning in a quick circle, ducked under his arm and threw himdown.

The boy yelled in pain as he fell, butwhen she let go the pain stopped

The three boys looked at her and thenat each other for a second. Then theylooked at Egbert who was standing andfeeling a lot braver now. They looked ateach other again. And then they ran away.

Egbert was glad to be rescued, but hewas embarrassed to be saved by a girl, when he was so afraid. "Thank you" wasall he could think of to say.

She told him her name was Sue Anneand asked him his name. As they walked,he told her the whole story.

Finally he asked her how she had doneit.

"I study a martial art from Japancalled Aikido" she said. "It teaches youhow to protect yourself without fightingback. I was just on my way to class when Isaw those boys picking on you".

"Oh" she exclaimed, "I justremembered I've got to hurry. I'mprobably late already. Do you want tocome with me?" she asked.

"Sure" he said. So they ran to Aikidoschool.

When they got there, she showed himhow to bow and told him it was proper tobow when entering and leaving the 'dojo',which was the Japanese word for school.

She bowed toward a picture of a man.She said it showed respect to O Sensei, theman in the picture who had inventedAikido. Egbert bowed as she had doneand they went into the dojo.

"That's the teacher" she said pointing."His name is Bob, but we call him

Sensei which means 'teacher' in Japanese."

She introduced Egbert to everyone. The teacher told him he was welcome to sitand watch the class, which was about tostart.

The children sat very still in a straightline. The teacher sat in front of them andthey all bowed to O Sensei to start theclass. Then the teacher turned and bowedto the students and they bowed to him.

After some warm-up exercising, theypracticed rolling. Egbert was impressedwith how smooth it looked and how easythey all made it seem.

Then the teacher showed a technique.

Page 22: THE TRANSFORMATION OF EGBERT

After he demonstrated, the studentsbowed to him. Each student took apartner and after bowing to each other, they tried to do what the teacher hadshown.

When a student would lose his balance, instead of falling down, they would rolland come up standing and balanced.

Egbert thought it was amazing. Hecould tell right away that Sue Anne wasone of the best students.

Page 23: THE TRANSFORMATION OF EGBERT

It looked so effortless and soft. Hewouldn't have believed it was real if hehadn't just seen Sue Anne show how wellit worked when you needed it.

After class, Sue Anne told the Senseiand the other students the story of meetingEgbert. The look on the teacher’s faceshowed how proud he was of Sue Anne.

Then he asked Egbert if he wanted totry Aikido. He gave Egbert a form for hisparents to sign.

The next day Egbert came back withthe money for the class and a letter sayinghe had his parents' permission.

Bob, the Sensei, taught him aboutrelaxing and centering.

He explained to Egbert, "When we getangry or scared, we lose our center.”

“When we get uptight we do foolishthings.” “We lose our balance, not just inour bodies, but in our minds as well."

They practiced centering and relaxingtheir weight downwards and theirpartners tried to push them over. Whenthey were relaxed and centered, they werestrong. But when they resisted and pushedback they always lost their balance.

Egbert was doing so well the Senseiteased him and Egbert lost his balance. They did it over and over until he couldstay calm and keep his center.

Page 27: THE TRANSFORMATION OF EGBERT

Then they started rolling. Right awayEgbert got dizzy.

It took several classes for him to learnto relax and center when he rolled. Thenhe was able to roll all the way around theroom and stand up without losing hisbalance.

Page 28: THE TRANSFORMATION OF EGBERT

Besides learning how to roll and fall inclass, they learned techniques for grabsand punches and kicks and finally for'randori' which is group attack.

When school let out and summerstarted he went to two classes every dayduring vacation. He was lucky becauseonce school let out he would not see thoseboys again until fall.

Page 29: THE TRANSFORMATION OF EGBERT

He wanted to learn so he paidattention to the teacher and focused hismind as he had been taught.

The teacher taught him well becausehe was such a sincere student.

Mostly the teacher taught that fightingleads to more fighting and that a fightcould often be avoided by a calm, lovingattitude.

“People usually respond to beingtreated with respect, especially if you cankeep being respectful when they treat youbadly.”

Egbert was a little embarrassed that hehad lost his temper and hit that boy forcalling him names.

Page 30: THE TRANSFORMATION OF EGBERT

Finally fall came and school started. The very first day, the boys who hadbullied him saw him.

Page 31: THE TRANSFORMATION OF EGBERT

They went right over and started totease him. He was glad he had learnedhow to relax and center. He just stood andlooked at them. He didn't get mad.

Finally he said, "You know youwouldn't like it if someone made fun ofyou or your name or called your mothernames. Well, neither do I. So I lost mytemper. That's why I hit you.”

“But I'm sorry I didn't know how tohandle your teasing any better. I'm sorryI hurt you. It didn't make me happy tohurt you, and I don't think hurting myfeelings made you happier.”

“Maybe we can get along better thisyear. Anyway, that's what I hope.” Thenhe walked away.

Page 32: THE TRANSFORMATION OF EGBERT

The boys just stood there. They weremore shocked by the way he had actedthan they had been by being thrown downby a girl.

The next day one of the boys came overto Egbert and asked him why he seemed sodifferent. Egbert told him about Aikido.

A couple of days later, the three boysshowed up at the dojo to watch class.

Page 33: THE TRANSFORMATION OF EGBERT

Both Egbert and the teacher welcomedthem. They liked it and asked if theycould join the dojo. The teacher told themif it was okay with their parents, theywould be welcome.

When they came the next day theteacher had Egbert and Sue Anne showthem how to roll. By the time they hadbeen training a couple of weeks, Egberthad become friends with each of them.

The next Saturday Egbert got to takehis first test. He brought two flowers. One he put in a vase under the picture ofO Sensei. He passed his test with flyingcolors.

After he finished he brought the otherflower over to Sue Anne and gave it toher. "Thank you" was all she could thinkof to say. They both smiled at each other.

Words of the Master

“I want considerate people to listen to the

voice of Aikido.

There is no enemy of love. There is no discord

in love. Aikido is the realization of love.

It is not for correcting others; it is for

correcting your own mind.

The secret of Aikido is to harmonize ourselves

with the movement of the universe and bring

ourselves into accord with the universe itself.

This is Aikido. This is the mission of Aikido

and should be your mission.”

Morihei Ueshiba, O Sensei

The Founder of Aikido
