From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents A number of video clips were added to the School’s website recently. These were created last year and feature students, staff and parents discussing the strengths of a Toowoomba Grammar School education. The video clips cover three aspects of the School; the Junior School, the Senior School and Boarding. If you visit the School’s website, you will find a link to each video on the home page. Alternatively you can click on the following link to take you directly to the Junior School video. https://youtu.be/oNRkfHXFj94 Chess The Toowoomba District Primary Schools’ Individual Chess Championship was held yesterday, with over 350 students from primary schools across Toowoomba competing. Oliver Clifford (5W) took out first place, repeating the same level of success as last year. Charlie Meyer (5W) took out first place in his division. Several other boys placed in the top three in their divisions. The boys who attended the Chess tournament were fine representatives for our School, and I congratulate the boys on their endeavours and successes. Mr Evan Rees, our Grand Master in Charge of Chess deserves recognition for the work he does with our Chess students.

Staff appointment It is my pleasure to announce that Mrs Jan Heffernan has been appointed as the new Head of Teaching and Learning in the Junior School. Mrs Heffernan currently works in the Junior School at Brisbane Boys’ College (BBC), a fellow GPS school, where she has taught for more than 20 years. She has a deep understanding of boys’ education and of working in a very similar type of school.

Mrs Heffernan has essentially been responsible for the curriculum and learning support roles at BBC’s Junior School for over 20 years. Mrs Heffernan has been Deputy Head of Junior School (Teaching and Learning), Junior School Curriculum Co-ordinator and Co-ordinator of Learning Support and Gifted and Talented. She is currently the Co-ordinator of the Centre for Thinking and Learning in the Junior School at BBC. Mrs Heffernan has a range of qualifications including a Master’s of Education, a Bachelor of Education, along with Diplomas in Special Education and Gifted and Talented Education. In addition, she has Teacher / Librarian qualifications. Mrs Heffernan is also a curriculum advisor to Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ). I look forward to welcoming Mrs Heffernan to our school at the start of second term.

Adopt-a-Cop The Queensland Police Service runs a program in partnership with schools in our State titled ‘Adopt-a-Cop’. This results in a policeman or policewoman being ‘adopted’ by a school and then working with the school and the students in a range of ways. One of the benefits of this program is it puts a face and a name to a police officer allowing children to meet and know a person, rather than a uniform. At last week’s assembly we adopted Senior Constable Brameld as the Junior School’s policeman. The ceremony also involved Inspector Cumming, who represented Toowoomba District’s Police Service. Senior Constable Brameld is well known to many boys already through his involvement with sports coaching and as his son, Cody, attends the Junior School. I congratulate and thank Senior Constable Brameld for taking on this important role and look forward to his contributions at our School.

Senior Constable Brameld (left) with Inspector Cumming, participated in the ceremony,

along with School Captain Will Smith and School Vice Captain, Will Anderson. Cody Brameld (centre) was understandably proud of his dad.

GPS Swimming Championship Our GPS Swimming Team travelled to Brisbane last Friday to compete at the GPS Swimming Championships (Years 5 to 7). The boys had the opportunity to swim at Brisbane Aquatic Centre (Chandler), the same pool in which Commonwealth and Olympic Games athletes swim. Our swimming team competed well and the boys should feel proud of their efforts.

I commend Mr Darren Stewart (Head Junior Coach), Mrs Jess Galbraith (Team Manager), Mr David Anderson (Sportsmaster) and Miss Tamara Quinn (Swim Coach) for their fine work with the boys. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School

Nude Food Day Tuesday each week is Nude Food Day in the Junior School. The boys at the Junior School will be encouraged to bring to school food that is not prepacked for morning tea and lunch. There were two main reasons that this was implemented. One is to promote healthy eating, good nutrition and limit the intake of processed foods. The other reason is environmental, where the amount of wrapping (paper/plastic) used is reduced. We hope that parents will support this initiative. Food ideas include pieces of fruit and vegetables, salads, sandwiches, pasta, wraps and ham and cheese roll-ups. Peanut Allergy Toowoomba Grammar School, similarly to most schools in the Australia, has students with life-threatening allergies to nuts. Should these students ingest or come into contact with peanuts or food items containing peanuts or other types of nuts, the boys will suffer a severe allergic reaction that is potentially life-threatening. This includes a trace of nut residue on their skin via contact with packaging materials. I respectfully request that parents refrain from sending their sons to school with peanut butter sandwiches or peanut or nut based food items including snack bars. Additionally, boys are not to share their food with each other at school.

Sports News Swimming On Wednesday 1 March, 17 boys from the Junior School competed at the Darling Downs Primary School Swimming Carnival at the Gatton Aquatic Centre. A number of boys achieved personal bests which was great to see. Alexander Gentry, Chace Oates, Alex Fischer, Judd Rei, Hugh Pollock and Ryan Thornton were selected in the Darling Downs Primary School swimming team for 2017. Congratulations boys and good luck at the State Championships in Brisbane later in the month. On Friday 3 March, the Junior School Swimming Team competed at the Under 10 – Under 12 GPS Swimming Carnival. Our swimmers performed very well and represented the School admirably. The boys certainly enjoyed the bus trip and the chance to swim against the other GPS Schools. Congratulations to the Junior Team which finished in 7th place. Thank you to the parents who travelled down to support the boys on this special occasion. Finally, thank you to Mrs Jess Galbraith, Mr Darren Stewart and Miss Tamara Quinn who have worked with the boys and supported them throughout the swimming season. The support and guidance shown to the boys by these staff is appreciated.

Inside we have been building impressive Lego creations, marble runs and having a fun time playing hangman which is helping the boys work on spelling and seems to be an exciting game for them to play.
