HOW TO PRESCHOOL Comfort Sign and Classroom Lanyards Comfort Sign One comfort sign will be in each classroom and will be used by the classroom volunteers. The comfort sign picture will be the same as the children’s lanyard. This is what you will use to help the children identify their group in the Story Room for large group time. Do not use picture as anything more than group identification. Do not ask children to walk like a fire truck. (Use the “Transition Activity to Story Room” ideas below.) Lanyards There will be a set of color coded lanyards with a picture insert in each classroom (example: orange lanyard/ fire truck). There will be a series of different pictures in rotation for your classroom each month. Prior to transition to Story Room, each child will be handed a lanyard with that classroom’s comfort sign picture of the week.

1. When the children line up to begin transition to Story Room ask the child to put on their lanyard. 2. Children should keep their lanyards on throughout Story Room and remove them as they re-enter class after

Story Room. 3. “Today’s Schedule”, listed at the beginning of each age group, communicates when children begin their transition

to Story Room.

Transition Activity to STORY ROOM Activity will rotate each month and be designed with intentionality to support the ‘WORD’ of the month. When beginning the final action/activity, tell the children they will be going to the Story Room in one/two minutes. If there is a child who has difficulty transitioning, give this child a private three minute as well as a one/two minute warning. When final activity is complete:

● Tell all the children to stand up. ● Grab your comfort sign. (You will use this to lead children to Story Room.) ● Ask children to show their right hand, place it on their forehead (like looking far in the sun) and follow in a straight,

quiet line while they help their volunteer search for the classroom entry. ● Walk the children in a line to the entry. Look back at them with a wink/smile and creep (like sneaking) along to the

entry of room. Transitional activity is found in each age appropriate Application Station. Pick up the comfort sign and begin to move quietly to the Story Room. Nothing is loud. Everything is quiet. Once you teach children to behave this way they will catch on quickly. Look back and encourage children along by asking them to bring their “transition activity” to the Story Room to show our friends.

High Impact STORY ROOM Values

1. Repetition 2. One upfront person (Story Teller) 3. Quiet voice 4. Story Room rugs 5. Screen cues programming elements. (Screen at front and screen at back wall for volunteers)

Entry Experience

1. Children are handed their Story Room rugs outside of the Story Room. 2. Volunteer walks to the front of the Story Room holding up their comfort sign. Have the children sit in their group.

Fill the Story Room in first from “house left” (if facing the flat screens) then to “house right”. 3. Volunteer Script: “Welcome to the Story Room! Please take your Story Room rugs and find a quiet place to sit.”

(Story Teller and most volunteers face the entry always). 4. Children always sit with backs to the entry.

Story Hits / Story Sequencing If the schedule guides the Story Hits portion of the experience to be after children return to the classroom from the Story Room, it will be time to retell the story using a flannel graph tool. Story sequencing should be used to retell the story. Place the first flannel on the board and begin the story. Then ask: “What happens next?” and place another piece of flannel on the board to prompt the correct response. Continue sequencing through the end of the story.

PRESCHOOL: STORY ROOM DIRECTIVES Entry Experience 1. Children are handed their Story Room rugs outside of the Story Room. 2. Volunteer Script: “Welcome to the Story Room! Please take your Story Room rugs and find a quiet place to sit.” 3. Children always sit with backs to the entry. Greeting (Quiet, engaging voice) Once the children are seated, the following will be repeated every week. Story Teller says: “Welcome to the Story Room. I am the Story Teller and this is a special place. This is a special place because this is where we hear true stories from the Word of God (hold up your Bible). I want you to know who God is. Sooooo….the true story you will hear today will tell you and me who God is.” “We want to keep this place special so we have some special rules. Rules help us to have fun and keep things the way they should be.

1. The first special rule is that we always sit on our Story Room rugs and hold on. (Show children how to do that.) We keep everything that belongs to us … our hands, our arms, our legs and feet close on the Story Room rugs.

2. The second special rule is that when I’m talking, you are listening. When you are listening you aren’t talking and your eyes are looking at my eyes.

3. The third special rule is to participate. When we do something in this room, we all do it together. Let’s review the three special rules for our special Story Room.”

“Now we are going to have some fun learning about who God is. First, we will stretch and then we will play a game.” Stretch Time Help children quietly release some energy and relax with some warm up stretches. Upfront Game Name: Who is wearing it? Supplies: None Instructions: Ask children to do the action if they are wearing something you describe. This is a 100% participation game so when a few children remain, pick out things they are wearing so everyone wins.

1. Jump up and down if your shirt has red in it. 2. Pat your head if your shoes are sparkly. 3. Turn in a circle, if you are wearing something in your hair. 4. Do three jumping jacks, if you have white socks on your feet. 5. Rub your tummy if you are wearing nail polish. 6. Clap your hands if you have a ball on your t-shirt. 7. Act like a monkey if you have an animal on your shirt or pants.

STORY ROOM Song Let’s sing our Story Room Song together: “We are all in the Story Room, the Story Room, the Story Room. We are all in the Story Room, me and NAME (look for the child so they can say ‘I’m here!’ The last time all children say their name at once.)” – sung to “Here we go round the mulberry bush” Memory Verse Philippians 1:6 (ESV) “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion.” Taught with motions found in the preschool take-home Transition to Animation “Now children, we are going to watch a video that tells us today’s story with pictures.” Animation 2- 2 ½ minute art-based video with Scripture monologue

PRESCHOOL: STORY ROOM DIRECTIVES (2) Story Hits Scripture Reference: The Story of Creation, Genesis 1-2:3 (ESV)

● In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. ● Everything was dark and the Spirit of God hovered over the waters. ● On the first day, God created light and said it was good. He separated darkness and light. He saw it was good. ● On the second day, God created the sky above the clouds and oxygen so plants, animals and people could live.

He saw it was good. ● On the third day, God gathered all the water in one place and made dry land. He called the waters seas and the

dry land Earth. ● On the fourth day, God made day and night. He made the sun, moon and stars. God saw it was good. ● On the fifth day, God made animals like fish to swarm (swim in large groups) in the water and animals like birds to

fly in the air. God saw it was good. ● On the sixth day God made animals that walk on land and the first man. God looked at everything He created

and said it was very good. ● On the seventh day God rested.

Closing Application It blows my mind to think about how beautiful Creation was the first time anyone saw it. Can you imagine seeing red for the first time? God created it. How about seeing purple or green the first time? God created them. How about a star or the moon? That would be amazing. God wants us to be thankful for all these good things. They are from Him and are here to show us His glory. When you see something amazing, don’t just walk past it. Stop and be amazed by a rainbow, a beautiful tree or an amazing color. Take a moment to stop and be thankful for the beautiful things that God created. This month there is a new word that tells us who God is. God is good. Be thankful. This week we will learn the first of four tools reminding us of what we should thank God for. Today we learn to be thankful for His generosity. Look at this mound of clay. God could have made everything look and taste just like this mound of clay. But He didn’t do that. He gave us amazing things to eat that taste delicious. He gave us beautiful things to look at. We are thankful that we live in such a wonderful world.

After the Closing Element, Story Teller transitions to intro Loud and Clear: “Okay! Now, let’s all stand up.” (This can be a cue for Loud and Clear to start heading to the front of the room). “But, be sure to stay on your Story Room rugs! Let’s get ready to worship with Loud and Clear!” Worship Loud and Clear team enters as reference is read on final screen. After last song, Loud and Clear team asks children to show them one hand, place that hand above their eyes and ‘search’ for the Story-Teller! Do the best you can to communicate the instructions and calm down children after worship. Dismissal (Story Teller will pause and look around and say in a very quiet voice) “Thank you for being with me today in the Story Room. This is a special place indeed! Now I want you to all stand up, grab your Story Room rug; look downward at your picture and turn around to find the volunteer with your sign that looks the same as your picture! When you find your sign, line up behind your volunteer in a straight line. Then, you are going to leave your Story Room rugs in the bin outside of the Story Room and see if you can find your classrooms.” (Use the searching hand-to-forehead motion and tip-toe to encourage a quiet trip back to class.) “Thank you for being such good listeners today. Now let’s see if we can find our way back to class AND remember YOU ARE LOVED!”

GRADE SCHOOL: WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Happy Birthday (generic) Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday, God bless you. Happy Birthday to you. Good Things Good Things is a great time for children to express something good that happened in the past week. Prayerfully, this is a time of celebration for you and the kids. The range of good things swings from, “I just got back from vacation!” to, “I scored my first soccer goal yesterday!” to, “My parents didn’t fight this week!” and even sometimes “My mom started coming to church with us today!”. All are good and allows you to get to know the children God has entrusted to you better and allows your children to feel they are part of something special. What’s up with the “skit”? Weird. Silly. Stupid. What’s the point? Giggle. Chuckle. We hear it all about the video skit. The point of the video skit is, in the best way we know how, to demonstrate what God is not. If you look for that, you will be able to stand up and say “Did you see that skit? I am so glad God is not like that. Here’s why …” What does this mean to me? God is good. Be thankful. What can we say about God after today’s story? God made this amazing world with just His voice. And what does He want from us? To be really good? To be perfect all the time? No! God knows that’s not possible because we are human and sin. God wants us to love Him. He wants us to follow His rules the best we can and He wants us to be thankful. Be thankful for the beautiful trees. Be thankful for a sweet, juicy cantaloupe even though you’ve had it 100 times before. Be thankful. There is so much for you to be thankful for and this week we focus our attention on being thankful for His generosity. God is always generous and never stingy. Good Motions

I can be: 1. BE THANKFUL FOR HIS GENEROSITY: With both hands in the air, do “jazz fingers”, cheering, “It was good”. 2. BE THANKFUL FOR HIS PROMISES: Starting with arms spread wide, bring arms up, arched to display a

to make the bottom point of the heart. 4. BE THANKFUL FOR HIS GIFTS: With palms open facing up, move arms together towards the ground.

Activity One Minute Watercolors Supplies: Storyboards with six boxes representing six days of Creation, watercolors, brush, water cups Instructions: In order, read the days of Creation. For each day of Creation, instruct the kids to paint how they see that God is good by what He created or did each day. Give children one minute to paint in each box. Wrap Up: I am thankful that God created everything differently. I like the way He made some things red and others yellow, some things soft and others rough. He created everything with a special purpose and He created everything in the best way. There are no mistakes in His plan and design. I am thankful that God is generous and good in all He made. Memory Verse Review Disappearing Words Supplies: Dry erase markers, whiteboard or window, eraser Philippians 1:6 (ESV) “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Instructions: Write the verse on a whiteboard or window. Say the verse together as a group. Erase several key words leaving the first letter. Repeat saying the verse. Repeat both steps until all of the words are erased.

First Grade Application Station (2) Special Prayer Time (Pause after each phrase in the prayer.) Let’s spend time in prayer thanking the Father for being good all the time. If you are thankful that God is good, then repeat after me when I pray: “Thank you Father for being good. Give me a thankful heart that is grateful for everything. I am glad I can learn about You today. In Jesus’ name, amen.” Story Hits Supplies: Flannel graph Scripture: The Story of Creation, Genesis 1-2:3 (ESV)

● In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. ● Everything was dark and the Spirit of God hovered (moved) over the waters. ● On the first day, God created light and said it was good. He separated darkness and light. He saw it was good. ● On the second day, God created the sky above the clouds and oxygen (air we breathe) so plants, animals and

people could live. He saw it was good. ● On the third day, God gathered all the water in one place and made dry land. He called the waters seas and the

dry land Earth. ● On the fourth day, God made day and night. He made the sun, moon and stars. God saw it was good. ● On the fifth day, God made animals like fish, to swarm (swim in large groups) in the water and animals like birds,

to fly in the air. God saw it was good. ● On the sixth day, God made animals that walk on land, and the first man. God looked at everything He had

created and said it was very good. ● On the seventh day, God rested.

Word Enrichment Thankful Dance Supplies: Musical instruments. (These do not need to be purchased, cans and lids work great.) Spend time thanking God through dance. Shout out in a quiet voice things you are thankful for in nature. Tell God how great and good He is. Ask the children to participate by shouting out things they are thankful for in nature too. Word Enrichment Density Tower View this experiment: http://spanglersci.com/HarvestDensityTower Materials

• Tall, narrow, clear container (500 mL or 1000 mL graduated cylinders are perfect) • 50-100 mL (1.5-3.5 oz) lamp oil • 50-100 mL rubbing alcohol • 50-100 mL vegetable oil • 50-100 mL tap water • 50-100 mL dish soap • 50-100 mL milk • 50-100 mL maple syrup • 50-100 mL corn syrup • 50-100 mL honey • Ping pong ball • Soda bottle cap • Plastic bead • Grape tomato • Board game die • Popcorn kernel • Metal nut or bolt •

Experiment 1. Start your column by pouring the honey into the cylinder. Now, you will pour each liquid SLOWLY into the

container, one at a time. It is very important to pour the liquids slowly and into the center of the cylinder. Make sure that the liquids do not touch the sides of the cylinder while you are pouring. It’s okay if the liquids mix a little as you are pouring. The layers will always even themselves out because of the varying densities. Make sure you pour the liquids in the following order:

• Honey • Corn syrup • Maple syrup • Milk • Dish soap • Water • Vegetable oil • Rubbing alcohol • Lamp oil

2. After letting the liquid layers settle, you'll notice that they remain in the order you poured them into the cylinder and that they are clearly distinguishable from each other. What scientific principle do you think contributes to the column's layers?

3. Make a chart that shows the order of each layer. 4. Take the various small objects and drop them into the column. Drop them in the following order:

• Metal nut or bolt • Popcorn kernel • Board game die • Grape tomato • Plastic bead • Soda cap • Ping pong ball

5. Each of the objects will sink through or float on a different layer of the density column. What makes some objects sink deeper into the column while some hardly sink at all?

Second Grade Application Station (3)

How Does It Work? The same amount of two different liquids will have different weights because they have different masses. The liquids that weigh more (have a higher density) will sink below the liquids that weigh less (have a lower density). To test this, you might want to set up a scale and measure each of the liquids that you poured into your column. Make sure that you measure the weights of equal portions of each liquid. You should find that the weights of the liquids correspond to each different layer of liquid. For example, the honey will weigh more than the Karo syrup. By weighing these liquids, you will find that density and weight are closely related. Density is basically how much "stuff" is smashed into a particular area... or a comparison between an object's mass and volume. Remember the all-important equation: Density = Mass divided by Volume. Based on this equation, if the weight (or mass) of something increases but the volume stays the same, the density has to go up. Likewise, if the mass decreases but the volume stays the same, the density has to go down. Lighter liquids (like water or rubbing alcohol) are less dense than heavy liquids (like honey or Karo syrup) and so float on top of the more dense layers. The same goes for the small objects that you dropped into your density column. The metal bolt is more dense than any of the liquids in the column and therefore sinks directly to the bottom. Less dense objects will float on individual layers of the column, however. For instance, the plastic bead is more dense than the vegetable oil and everything above it but less dense than the water and everything below it. This makes the bead settle on the top of the water. Additional Info In the materials, we had you grab a bunch of miscellaneous tiny objects. This is the perfect opportunity to get in some scientific exploration! Use what you learned from dropping the bead, soda bottle cap, tomato, and die into the container to figure out which items are more and less dense than water. Which items have more density than vegetable oil? What items are less dense than honey? Observations When all the liquids and small objects have been added to your density tower, you will have what appears to be a magic column. All of the liquids will be clearly distinguishable from each other and each of the objects will have settled at different levels within the liquids. Construct a chart to show the order that the liquids are in and the position of each object. Why do you think these two phenomena happen? What scientific principle is this illustrating? Wrap Up: God created more than color, animals, light and dark. He also created scientific principles we can’t see like density and gravity. These principles, as well as all of nature, show us that God is not stingy in His goodness. He is generous in all things and the story of Creation shows clearly just how good God really is in all He made. You may hear people question His goodness and generosity but you know differently. God is always good and when we look at nature and science we should always be thankful. (There is no spiritual wrap up, just a review of the days of Creation and reviewing the goodness of God as He created everything we know that is good.) Instructions:

1. Before you begin the game, hang all the signs up along the wall, leaving space for children to stand under and between each one.

2. Instruct all children to choose a day of Creation to and stand by that day’s sign. (Make sure there are children at each sign.)

3. Spin the cube. When the cube falls to the ground face up on a day of Creation, those children sit down. The remaining children choose a new day of Creation and move to stand under that sign. (Once a day of Creation has been rolled and has kids sitting at it’s sign, no additional children should choose that day of Creation.)

4. The goal is that every day has children seated under it and then you can re-play again from the beginning. Checkout Supplies: Word puzzles, coloring page pertaining to today’s story, crayons or markers, LGOTA pages

Checkout Supplies: Word puzzles, crayons or markers, LGOTA pages

Today’s Schedule Snack, Prayer and Binder (3 minutes) Small Group (7 minutes) Let’s Get This Straight (3 minutes) Special Prayer Time (1 minute) Activity (15 minutes) Word Enrichment (15 minutes) Checkout Snack, Prayer and Binder

Ask the Lord to bless the snack and pray for the worship service. Binder Instructions:

1. Give children a few minutes to say their memory verse to you. Mark their binders. 2. Make sure they have this quarter’s rewards card. Write their name at the top of the rewards card, not on the

binder. Add this week’s devo. 3. Allow children to catch up on their rewards card. Mark if they brought their binder. If you need to burn a few

minutes, do one day of this week’s devos in class. 4. Explain to children how to use their binders. Encourage them to bring their Bibles to church every weekend.

Small Group 100% RESPONSE TOOL: Today’s 100% Response Tool is called True or False. Vote on the action for true and the action for false.

1. 100% RESPONSE TOOL: Today’s true story is found in the book of Revelation (False) 2. 100% RESPONSE TOOL: God made day and night. (True) 3. 100% RESPONSE TOOL: God made the sun, moon and stars. (True)

4. 100% RESPONSE TOOL: On the third day, God made video games. (False) 5. 100% RESPONSE TOOL: God made trees, bushes, flowers, fruit and vegetables. (True) 6. 100% RESPONSE TOOL: God made animals, land rovers, fishing poles. (False)

7. 100% RESPONSE TOOL: God made things that make us sick. (False) 8. 100% RESPONSE TOOL: God made a man in His own image. (True) 9. 100% RESPONSE TOOL: God said, everything I made “was okay.” (False) 10. How can we show God we are thankful for His Creation? (We can help take care of His Creation.) 11. Volunteer: Share your favorite part of God’s Creation. Be sure it’s interesting. 12. What is your favorite part of what God made? 13. How does it make you feel that God made so many good things for us to enjoy?

Let Me Get This Straight Supplies: Personal Bible is preferred, copies of Scripture listed below for children without a Bible, colored pencils (orange, green, yellow)

1. Turn to Genesis 1. Go around the group and allow each child to read a verse. 2. With an orange pencil, underline each time God said “Good”. 3. With a green pencil, underline each time God refers to Himself. Who was present and created the world? 4. Using a yellow pencil shade everything “they” created.

Special Prayer Time Let’s spend time in prayer thanking the Father for being good all the time. If you are thankful God is good, then take a turn and thank God for one or two simple things in Creation. Remember you are speaking to your heavenly Father and you don’t have to be fancy with your words. “Thank you Father for being good. Thank you for ______________ and ______________. Give me a thankful heart that is grateful for everything In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Fifth Grade Application Station (2) Word Enrichment Density Tower View this experiment: http://spanglersci.com/HarvestDensityTower Materials • Tall, narrow, clear container (500 mL or 1000 mL graduated cylinders are perfect) • 50-100 mL (1.5-3.5 oz) lamp oil • 50-100 mL rubbing alcohol • 50-100 mL vegetable oil • 50-100 mL tap water • 50-100 mL dish soap • 50-100 mL milk • 50-100 mL maple syrup • 50-100 mL corn syrup • 50-100 mL honey • Ping pong ball • Soda bottle cap • Plastic bead • Grape tomato • Board game die • Popcorn kernel • Metal nut or bolt Experiment 1.

• Honey • Corn syrup • Maple syrup • Milk • Dish soap • Water • Vegetable oil • Rubbing alcohol • Lamp oil 2. After letting the liquid layers settle, you'll notice that they remain in the order you poured them into the cylinder

and that they are clearly distinguishable from each other. What scientific principle do you think contributes to the column's layers?

3. Make a chart that shows the order of each layer. 4. Take the various small objects and drop them into the column. Drop them in the following order: • Metal nut or bolt • Popcorn kernel • Board game die • Grape tomato • Plastic bead • Soda cap • Ping pong ball 5. Each of the objects will sink through or float on a different layer of the density column. What makes some objects

sink deeper into the column while some hardly sink at all?

Fifth Grade Application Station (3) How Does It Work? The same amount of two different liquids will have different weights because they have different masses.
