6 tested tips for getting your resume into the hands of someone that can hire you

Page 2: The stealth approach to job search networking

Here’s the method I use to land interviews at companies that didn’t even know they wanted to hire me.

It works for other people too. I know because I’ve taught it to over 20

people I know this year alone

Step 1: Figure out where you can work

You want to find companies that:•Do what you’re trained to do•Have the money to pay you•Will make you happy, or at least satisfied

Step 2: Find out the person with the power to hire you

You’re looking for a linked-in employee, manager, department head, company owner, CEO… anyone that can either hire you on the spot or refer you to someone that can

Step 3: Create a list of contacts that either work at that company or used

to work there

Ask them:1. What kind of work has this company done in the past?2. What are they currently focusing on?3. What’s coming down the pipeline?4. What’s the financial status of the company? Your desired

department?5. What kind of person is the hiring manager?6. Who’s a good contact to get you in the hiring manager’s office?7. How does/did this contact feel about working there?8. Can you name drop this person’s name in a conversation with

the hiring manager or in your cover letter?

Step 4: Figure out what problems you can help the company solve and

write a laser-focused resume and cover letter highlighting how you can

help the company make money

Step 5: Get this resume into the hiring manager’s hands

Here’s some hints of how to do this:1. Call the manager before and/or after office hours (8:30 to 9:00

AM and 5:00 to 5:30 PM are great times to call companies that keep regular business hours)

2. Deliver your résumé with an excellent cover letter by mail or by hand

3. Send your own referral email. Write an email that says you’ve been researching that company/department and realized you could really help them out

4. Make sure to follow up whatever technique you use. Persistence is crucial, but don’t turn them off with too many calls or emails

Step 6: Rinse and repeat

Sometimes you misjudge the company’s willingness to hire you. Or, the company truly can’t afford another employee. Or, you may piss off the hiring manager and ruin your chances.

But, more likely, you will pique the interest of someone that wants to hire you. It’s only a matter of time, but this technique is pretty much guaranteed to land an interview
