Why go for Solar?2010 was the second warmest year on record so why not take advantage of all this solar energy and consider a solar hot water system installed by local solar specialist, First Call Heating Ltd.

The benefits of solar water heating Hot water throughout the year: • the system works all year round, supplemented by a boiler or immersion heater during the winter months.

Reduce your bills: • sunlight is free, so after installation, hot water costs will be reduced.

Cut your carbon footprint:• solar hot water is a green, renewable heating system and reduces your carbon dioxide emissions

How do solar water heating systems work?

Solar panels, called collectors, capture solar energy to heat water stored in a hot water cylinder.

There are two panel types; evacuated tubes (like inthepictureabove)orflatplatecollectorswhicharefixedontherooftilesorintegratedintotheroof. A separate boiler or immersion heater acts as a back up should the required temperature not be reached (60oC) with the solar system.

Larger solar panels can provide energy to heat your home though usually only on bright spring and autumn months to supplement the main heating boiler.

Is my home suitable? Do you have a sunny place to put solar •panels? Ideally, you’ll have 4 sqm of roof space facing east to west through south which receives direct sunlight for the main part of the day.Forflatroofs,thepanelscanbefixedtoaframe.

Do you have space for a larger, or an extra, •hot water cylinder? If a dedicated solar cylinder is not already installed then you will need to replace the existing cylinder, or add a dedicated cylinder with a solar heating coil.

Is your current boiler compatible?• Most conventional boiler and hot water cylinder systems are compatible with solar water heating. Combination boilers without a hot water tank may not be compatible.

Do you need planning permission?• No, but it’s worth checking if you live in a Listed Building or within a Conservation Area.

Funding and GrantsA typical solar water heating system costs between £3500-£4500 (inc vat at 5%). The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced that the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is expected to be launched in 2011 and has allocated £12 million to the scheme. Initially systems installed after July 2009 and by an accredited MSC installers will qualify for a Premium payment of £300 from the Energy Saving Trust and future yearly payments expected to be between £100-200 per year.

How much will I save? Based on the hot water heating requirements of a 3 bed semi detached home and a 3.4m panel, savings range from £50 to £85 per year. It will also save up to 570kg of CO2 emissions, depending on what fuel you will be replacing.

Thesolarfluidischangedevery3-5years(approximately £200) and an annual yearly inspection is required (usually tied in with a boiler service). First Call Heating provides a free 5 year guarantee and panels come with a 10 manufacturer’s guarantee.

First Call Heating Ltd is a well established heating specialist company accredited by MCS to install systems that meet the strict requirements for future Premium Payments and potential Fed-in Tariffs. First Call Heating has completed over 50 local installations and its customers have been delighted with the savings achieved.

Hello again,It’s exam season in our household as it is in many others around Southampton. I can cope with the expected “stressy” outbursts, the numerous study days at home (getting under my feet) and I’ve even suspended the daily nagging to maintain karma. But what I dread most is “Mum, can you test me?”. Point out that they missed something or they’re wrong and you get it in the neck. Then you have to read everything just to workoutwhattoask, resultinginlotsofhuffingandpuffing.Andworstofall, I can’t help panic at the terrible spelling and grammar to be told “it’s just notes, spelling doesn’t matter”. Am I alone?

It’sadifficulttimeforourteenagers;decidingwhattodoafterschoolorcollege plus the pressure to go to university and face a lifetime of debt with no guarantee of a job afterwards. (see To Go or Not to Go? p26). Good luck to them all in their exams this month.

Got a Job? I would encourage local businesses to offer these youngsters work experience, paid or unpaid during the summer holidays and weekends. If you want to post a job on my website’s Noticeboard, I’m happy tolistitfree.MydaughterhelpsmeintheofficeandhasjuststartedmakingcoldcallswhichisgreatforherCVandconfidence.Acommoncomplaintfromemployersisyoungsters’lackofsocialskillsinthe workplacet ie. customer service. Everyone has to start somewhere so why not give them a helping hand? Visit www.thesouthamptondirectory.co.uk and go to Contact Us/Noticeboard Entry.

Room to make a difference…..Being a supported lodgings ‘Host’ means you can turn young lives around. You have the satisfaction ofwatchingayoungpersongaininconfidenceand skills whilst you gain extra income from your support.

Penny Diver, Service Manager for Stonham, answers some commonly asked questions about being a Host below.

What IS supported Lodgings about?Supported Lodgings is a Housing Option for young people (16+) unable to live with their own families, either due to recent problems or because they are ‘leaving Care’. It provides a bridge between being dependent and becoming independent. Supported Lodgings placements can last from a few days to two years.

What is a host?Stonham works with individuals, couples and families who have a spare room and can offer time to support a young person in their home. These people are ‘Hosts’. We try hard to ‘match’ Hostswithyoungpeoplewhowillfitintotheirhome.

Do we have to be prepared to take in anyone?No.. We understand that you may have preferences around gender and may feel unable to support young people with particular ‘issues’. We aim for placements to work and to be a positive experience for everyone involved. We are very mindful that we are placing young people within your home so do our very best to build a complete picture of them, focusing both on their strengths and aspirations but also any concerning issues.

Do we get support?Your Placement Manager

supports you and your ‘Lodger’ throughout a placement and you have backup if they are not around. They come on regular, agreed visits but

also at short notice should any problems occur.

What impact will it have on my life?It is quite possible to combine the role with working full time.

You do not have to put your life on hold! If you have a holiday or are going away overnight we will arrange for them to go to another host or a friend.

What are the main problems? The most common problems in placements are with young people not telling you in advance they will not be in for a meal, or deciding to stay with a friend overnight and not telling you. Many of the young people we place have had few boundaries

in their lives so need to get used to them. These problems are usually worked through. We have placed many hundreds of young people over time and the vast majority of them are very respectful towards the host and their family.

What do young people think about being in supported lodgings? Here are some of the things they have said:

‘Thank you for Christmas Day, for all the cups of tea and for letting me win that game of scrabble. My life will be more successful if I follow your teachings. I hope to learn from your actions and become a better person’

‘I feel safe, confident in myself and wanted for the first time’.

‘I feel like I’m my own person. My hosts are really down to earth so I feel really comfortable being here’.

What about Hosts?‘Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and I am very happy with the Service’

‘Communication with Stonham is fantastic. My Placement Manager is great. If she doesn’t answer the phone she returns the call or sends a text the same day….I feel confident that if I did have an emergency she would be there. She is always happy to discuss issues and offer ways of dealing with them. I also appreciate how honest you have been.”

Summer at WimbledonIt’s Wimbledon again, I’m feeling anxious, very fraught,

The pressure’s on again, it always is, on Centre Court,

The linesman has a guide dog and the umpire’s ninety three,

My opponent’s using gamesmanship; it’s really bothering me,

He queries almost everything; we’re stuck again at deuce,

The umpire is agreeing! What’s all this? The man’s obtuse,

So many bad decisions, and so many dodgy calls,

If he carries on, it won’t be me who needs some brand new balls,

Now it’s getting cloudy, and of course, here comes the rain,

It seems that we’ll be heading to the changing rooms again,

I’m thinking things can’t get much worse, and then, to my chagrin,

As I scuttle off the court, I hear Cliff Richard start to sing…

The sun may have only been out for a little bit, but with the sunburn and the smell of barbecues comes that annual hankering for a cheap convertible. There’s nothing quite like a spot of top-down motoring when the temperature manages to haul itself into doublefigures–andthegoodnewsisitwon’t have to cost you a second mortgage. Here, wedelveintotheonlineclassifiedstofindyoufivebargainsummersizzlersthat you can put on your drive for less than £2,000. Just remember to save some cash for the Factor 50…

Mazda MX-5, from £780The MX-5 is a perennial soft-top favourite and rightly so. It’s been around for 21 years

now which means there are plenty of cheaper examples knocking about. Our £2,000 budget can get a well-looked after original model, not an import, withrelativelylowmileage.TheMazdaisbrilliant to drive, cheap to run and repair and the perfect entry into convertible ownership.

Saab 9-3 Convertible, from £850Yes, you read that right. Saab 9-3 Convertibles can be had for under £1,000. That’s a huge amount of car for the money. You’ll be able to seat four in comfort, it’s built like a tank and will go on forever. And that’s handy because for this money you’re looking at a 150,000-miler plus. We found one with 180k, a 2.0-litre turbo petrol lump, service history, tax and MOT for six months at £850 on Auto Trader. Be quick as we’re tempted ourselves…

Fiat Barchetta, from £999This has to be the cheapest way into Italian two-seater soft-top ownership. The little Barchetta only comes in

left-hand drive, which helps bring values down. If you can live with that, you’ll be rewarded with acrackingdrive,goodlooksandazesty1.7-litreengine.Somedriverswillfindthecabinalittlecramped, but you’ll soon forget that when you’re blasting along country lanes with the top down. A 1998 model with 50,000 miles and service history can be found for £2,000.

Audi A4 Cabriolet, from £2,000You’ll have to hunt pretty hard, but Audi A4 Cabriolet models do occasionally crop up within this price bracket. That might mean looking in the depths of winter when the last thing people want is a soft-top, but canny buyers will be rewarded for their efforts. The A4 is solid, well packaged and usually comes withahighspec.Forthismoneyyou’llfindatiredpetrol model with intergalactic mileage but, have it looked at by an independent, and you could be onto a winner.

Mercedes SLK, from £2,295Ok, so it might be a little over our budget

but we think with a little hard negotiating you could pick up an SLK for under £2k. We spotted an R-reg model in black with 120k miles, 6 months tax and four months MOTatadealerfor£2,295ono–easilynegotiable within budget. The Mercedes is a timeless design, has a folding metal roof and, although not the quickest, is still great to drive.

months.’ said Lucy Dacre, Hearing Dogs Volunteer Co-ordinator. ‘We are keen to talk to people interested in becoming Puppy Socialisers,’ she added.

‘We select a puppy at about 6 weeks old and for thefirst12monthswetraintheminsocialskillsbefore their hearing dog training,’ continued Lucy. ‘A volunteer Puppy Socialiser homes the dog for about 12 months to teach it basic social skills in a everyday situations. Puppy Socialisers perform a vital role in the early training of our dogs and we value the contribution they make very highly,’ she continued.

Puppy Socialisers are trained and supported while costs associated with keeping the puppy are covered. Do YOU have what it takes to train one of our puppies?Tofindourmorevisit www.hearingdogs.org.uk or call 01844 348129 or e-mail: [email protected]

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon may be the famous ones, but why not create a superbly colourful hanging basket of your own? Garden centres and nurseries are crammed full of summer bedding plants at this time of year and there are colours to suit every taste. If aerial gardening is not for you, then the same type of plants can be used to produce a superb container for your terrace, patio or backyard. The great thing about summer bedding containers is that you can do just about whatever you want in the way of planting ...and get away with it. So now that the frosts are over in most areas, why not start planting?

All you need is readily available from your local gardencentre:agood-sizedbasket-choosea 12” basket as it’s easier to keep moist than smaller ones, a hanging-basket liner (make sure it is the same diameter as the basket you’ve chosen),oragood-sizedpotorplanterwithplentyof drainage holes. A good quality multi-purpose compost is essential for excellent results. What you choose is up to you, but the range is vast - Nemesia,SurfiniaPetunias,UprightPetunias,Cineraria‘Silverdust’,purple-bronzeleafedThalia Fuchsias or their more traditional cousins, Pelargoniums, Lobelia ...the list is endless. Think carefully about colours and textures. Decide whether you’re going for subtle or brash and bold, orifyouwouldliketoco-ordinatetheflowerswithother garden features.

If you are planting a basket, place it in a large flowerpotasthisstopstheround-bottomedbasket

from moving and makes it much easier to plant.

Place the liner in the basket,

adjusting it to fitthebasketand trimming off any excess. Next add handfuls of compost up until the

point where you want to plant

around the sides of

the basket. Planting slits are included in some liners. If you are using a pot, place a few inches ofbrokenflowerpots or large stones in the base and top up with compost to within a few inches of the pot rim.

Carefully remove the plants you need from their containers, easing the root balls out gently but firmly.AnuprightplantsuchasaFuchsiaorPelargonium is a perfect choice for the centre of the basket or container as it helps to give your planting height and structure. For hanging baskets carefully ease the root ball of each through the planting slit and nestle the root ball in to the compost. It is easier posting the roots through and you’re less likely to do any long term damage.

Any container looks better if there are plants cascading over the sides, so choose trailing plants and put these in around the edge. Space the trailing plants evenly around the sides of the basket.

Drizzlecompostaroundandbetweentherootballs of all the plants, making sure that each one has new and fresh compost to grow in to. Useyourfingerstofirmthecompostandmakesure that there are no gaps. It is best to use a combination of cascading plants and some upright ones around the outer edges of a basket. Thiswillensureareallywellfilledandcolourfuldisplay and should help to hide the basket framework too.

Once the planting is complete, water the container thoroughly using a watering can with the rose attached. It is best not to hang a basket uporstandapotinitsfinalpositionuntilithashad a few days ‘rest’ sitting in a cool spot out of too much hot, direct sunshine. This little rest period allows the plants to settle in to their new home and perform better later on.

Tips for Keeping your Summer Planter or Basket Looking GreatWater regularly, never letting the compost dry out completely. Use a watering can with rose attached, oragentlespraynozzleontheendof a hose to minimise the risk of disturbing the compost or the plants.

Feed every couple of weeks with a high-potash liquid fertiliser such as a tomato feed, as this will helptoencouragemoreflowerstodevelop.Ifyou position a planter full of summer bedding on the paving beneath a hanging basket, then any excess water or feed from the basket won’t be wasted.

If you’ve ever scoured the streets of a strange city trying to find a cash machine, found yourself hopelessly lost after taking a wrong turn or wished you knew even a few words of another language, you’ll know that travelling isn’t always easy. Help is at hand, or rather in your pocket: with a few well chosen apps, your smartphone can be the perfect travel companion.

Smartphone apps aren’t just for Facebooking, Tweeting and playing Angry Birds: they can transform the way you travel, too. Some of them concentrate on the nuts and bolts - how to get there, whether your flight is delayed, where the British Embassy is - and others on the bigger picture, with guides to the most interesting attractions and best hotels. Some apps do both, telling you about interesting things and then using GPS and maps to guide you there. Before we get app happy, two quick warnings: remember your charger - location-based apps drain batteries very quickly - and watch out for roaming fees. Some apps need an internet connection to function, and you may incur pricey mobile data charges when you use them.On the nuts and bolts side there’s Flight Times UK (iPhone), which you can use to see if your flight into or out of the UK has been delayed; Accuweather (iPhone and Android) for long-term weather forecasts; Tripadvisor (iPhone app, or via your phone’s web browser) to find hotels, flights and restaurants and to browse users’ reviews before you

book; and a wide range of GPS applications ranging from Android’s free Google Maps to the excellent (and battery-killing) TomTom Europe for iPhone. While most travel apps are free or just a few pounds, TomTom’s European apps

are £42.99 for Eastern Europe, £52.99 for

Western Europe and £69.99 for all of Europe. Some of the best travel apps come

from the Lonely Planet stable (www.

lonelyplanet.com/uk). Its iPhone and Nokia city

guides tell you everything you could possibly want to know about your destination and make good use of maps, while Android users can take advantage of Compass, pictured above a city-specific augmented reality app for destinations including Paris, Seoul and London. Compass enables you to point your phone’s camera at something and see relevant information, such as the best nearby sights or restaurants. Lonely Planet also provides phrasebooks for Nokia, Android and iPhone users.Compass isn’t the only augmented reality app:

Wikitude (for iPhone, Android and some Nokia devices) overlays information on real-world footage, so for example you can download an overlay showing you where the nearest Starbuck’s is; Etips City Guides (iPhone) use augmented reality to show places of interest; and Metro AR Pro (iPhone) shows you where the nearest tube or metro stations are. Some apps can act as translators too. Google Goggles (iPhone and Android) can take a photo of a menu or sign in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish and translate it into English, while the Google Translate app (Android and iPhone) can translate written text between 57 different languages, read the results aloud in 23 languages and translate spoken words in 15 languages.

And then there’s Word Lens (iPhone) - pictured here, which can

recognise text and replace it in real

time - so if you point your phone

at a menu, sign or billboard, you’ll see

the text change from Spanish to English

immediately. It’s one of the most extraordinary things we’ve ever seen, and makes us feel like we’re living in the future.

First impressions count. And it can be quick and easy to update the front of your property, says Katherine Sorrell, whether you’re thinking of selling or simply want a fresh new look.

The basicsWhere to start? Step outside your house for a moment and give it a long, hard appraisal. Be honest. What does it look like to someone who has never seen it before? Smeary windows and wonky gutters just won’t cut it. Neither will piles ofwindsweptleaves, deadplants, overflowingbins or grubby net curtains. These are the easy thingstofix.Movewheeliebinsorrecyclingboxesout of sight, clean the windows, wash the nets and sweep, mow and trim the garden, replanting window boxes and pots where necessary. Ensure that your gutters and downpipes are properly attached, clipbackanyflappingaerialcablesandalign satellite dishes so it all looks neat and tidy.

A lick of paintIt’s always a good idea to ensure that any paintwork on the front of your house is as pristine as possible. This means paying attention to your gate, railings and/or fence, front and garage doors, windows and perhaps the façade itself. For wood- and metal-work, remove any rust or rotten wood, fillorreplaceasrequired, primeandthenpaint, using appropriate products and ensuring the colours complement your property and the street as a whole. A window may require just a quick sand or a coat of paint, while a front door couldrequireafewcoatsoverseveraldays–either way, there’s no substitute for that gleaming, fresh look.

Walls may, depending on their height, need scaffolding to be re-painted safely, but if they’re letting the house down with blemishes, cracks or bulging render it’s worth tackling them. If you can see damp patches, make sure you know whatcausedthemandfixtheproblem;blownormissingareasofrendershouldberepairedfirst, too. If an unpainted brick wall is a problem, it’s best to clean off surface grime and, if necessary, repoint the mortar.

New for oldThe next step up from renovating and decorating doors and windows is to replace them entirely. This is really most worth doing when they are either rusted, rotten or otherwise past their sell-by date, or their style is such that they seriously detract from the property as a whole. A 1960s window in a period house, for example, is crying

out to be replaced with an elegant timber sash, and a solid, panelled front door would be a great substitute foraflimsy, flatone.Insome circumstances, uPVC windows are inappropriate, and you could enhance your property enormously byfittingwindowsthataremore sympathetic. Replacing windows also gives you the opportunity to install doubleglazing, withresultingimprovements in energy efficiency.Andyoudon’tjusthave to do like-for-like in terms ofsizeandshape.Withoutanysignificantstructuralalterations you could make a

In 1870, aged just 19, Scottish writer R.L. Stevenson set off with a donkey through the rural heartlands of south-central France, from the Upper Loire to the Cévennes. Man and beast covered 220 km, he to nurse a broken heart, she, the cantankerous Modestine, to carry the bags. Today, many follow in their footsteps, with or without donkey, browsing a copy of Stevenson’s ’Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes’ as they tackle the whole trail in 12 days or just a shorter section.

ThemainpartofthetrailcrossestheLozère,the least populated French county where they say you can see the Milky Way clearer than anywhere else. Here any village over 1000 people becomes a ‘town’, gathered around a ‘storm spire’ where bells would ring in bad weather to guide wanderers to safety. Many seem caught in a time warp, preserving their old wash-house, communal bread oven or wayside shrines. One of the prettiest is Cheylard l’Evêque with a chapel perchedonahillockandacosyflower-drapedinn, a lovely welcome for anyone after trampling through the dark forest of Mercoire.

For nature lovers, the Stevenson trail is a real haven, from meadows and forests, all waterfalls and babbling streams, to limestone plateaux, high pastures and moors strewn with heather and golden broom. Now and then, you come across a menhir or a dolmen, sometimes a Roman ruin, a medieval abbey or vestiges from the Maltese knights who had a seat in the area. BeyondChasseradèsandtheelegantMirandolviaduct spanning the valley, the path climbs up to MontLozère,reachingthehighestpointat1699

metres, barren and wild, with tall granite stones marking the ancient route on the crest.

Uponthiswindsweptheath, youcatchyourfirstglimpse of the Cévennes, the ‘blue hills’ which enraptured Stevenson, stretching south as far as you can see, towards the National Park where rare orchids and lilies mingle with carnivorous drosera. This is home to beavers, deer, myriad bats and birds, most spectacularly the birds of prey hovering in the thermals, in this rich UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. On the southernslopesofMontLozère,cricketswhirallaround and the fragrance of lavender and thyme lingers in the air.

After the damp misty days on the early part of his trek,StevensonhadfinallyarrivedintheSouthofFrance.Hereawarmbreezerustlesthroughthe trees, hamlets nestle on the steep slopes and cowswithtinklingbellsgrazeinlushpasturesamong dramatic boulders. In this land of shale and chestnut, the mountain path heads down to Pont de Montvert, an idyllic village tucked in the cusp of the hills. The Huguenot upheavals are still remembered here but every trekker on the Stevenson trail heads straight for the Auberge des Cévennes on the banks of the river Tarn. Up on the wall hangs the portrait of Clarisse who waited attheyoungman’stable, thefirstprettygirlhehad met since day one, ‘her grey eyes steeped in amorous languor.’ What happened then, no one knows for sure but as today’s ramblers continue to St Jean du Gard, there is talk of romance and a donkey patiently nibbling on marigolds.

At this time of year you want to spend as little time as possible in the kitchen so here’s a quick and easy supper that takes less than 25 minutes to create.

Serves 2Takes 20 mins

350g (12oz) linguine

1 tbsp olive oil

1 small red chilli pepper, deseeded and finely chopped

225g (8oz) raw, peeled tiger prawns

8 sundried tomatoes in oil, sliced, plus 3-4 tbsp of the marinating oil

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Few fresh basil leaves

TOP TIP - If you’re not too keen on chilli then replace with a finely chopped spring onion.

Cook the linguine in a large pan of lightly salted, boiling water for 10-12 mins or according to the packet instructions until tender but still with a little bite.

Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the chilli for 1-2 mins. Add the prawns and cook over a medium-high heat for 3-4 mins, stirring all the time until they have turned from grey to pink.

Drain the pasta and add to the frying pan with the sun-dried tomatoes and the marinating oil. Toss well to mix and heat through for 1-2 mins. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately garnished with fresh basil leaves.

That is the problem. Deciding whether to continue education beyond A-levels and face university tuition fees and student loans or take an alternative route.

People in their early twenties can't defer retirement planning if they want a reasonable lifestyle in later years.Butyoungpeopletodayfaceafinancialsituation similar to ‘The Perfect Storm'. The elements are combining to create conditions that sink any hope for school leavers to achieve financialindependenceduringtheirlifetime.

Those who want to study medicine, law, engineering etc, must attend university but their earning potential enables easier repayment of debts. Unless the result is a valuable degree, it is reckless to begin working life with a massive debt from studies that will have little impact on eventual earnings.

Many graduates with mediocre degrees struggle tofindemployment.Parentswhospendafortunefunding universtiy degrees could consider that investment in other more practical ways that gives them a head start in life.

For most young adults it's entirely possible to achieve success in life without a degree. We have to change the stigma attached to not attending university. The pressure and expectation of continuing education needs to be reappraised. The difference is attitude, focus, enthusiasm and a good work ethic.

There are companies which accept the responsibility of formal career development programs; if only more would follow suit. It can be argued that a degree is evidence of an applicant's intelligence, but perceptive interviewing reveals the same. If employers believe a degree essential, they can contribute to fees and study leave.

The prospects for a successful future are as good as ever if you plan the right course whether that be university or otherwise.

Top Tips for School Leavers Understand your skills and aims. Determine ◗

the most sensible course for you. Don’t bowing to peer pressure.

Seekadvicefromqualified,unbiasedpeople- ◗

not just parents or family friends.

Get a job with a reputable company, regardless ◗

ofsizeorpoorpay. It'saboutexperience, developingskills, gainingconfidenceanddeveloping a reputation. You'll move on to better things before too long.

Be an ‘extra miler'. Have a great attitude, ◗

enthusiasm and develop self discipline.

Start thinking longer term about your career. ◗

Planthreetofiveyearsahead.

Find a mentor. Most successful people attribute ◗

some of it to another person.

Setspecificgoals,bothforyourcareerand ◗

personal life.

Stand out from the crowd and choose your ◗

friends and associates with care.

Finally, and I wanted to put this at the top of the ◗

list but modesty prevailed, read my book ‘Power Secrets of the Rich and Successful' It's taken from the best university of all....the University of Life!
