THE SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST JULY 1, 2018

“CONNECTING PEOPLE TO JESUS AND TO ONE ANOTHER TO SERVE THE WORLD”

As We Gather

We live in a world where sin abounds and life is difficult as we struggle to follow Jesus. Following is never easy, especially when the going gets tough. It can be hard enough to follow people we know,

respect, and trust. It can be even harder to follow an unseen God who speaks to us through His eternal Word, strengthens us through bread and wine, and leads and guides us by His Spirit. Yet,

that is our calling. In the midst of struggle, persecution, illness, joblessness, conflict, and even death,

we listen to the One we know, respect, and trust because He is our Creator, our Savior, and is always with us to the end of the age.

Holy Communion

Holy Communion is being celebrated today. It is the belief of the Lutheran Church, based on Jesus’

own words, that in this Sacrament His body and blood are really present and that forgiveness of sins and the assurance of salvation are offered to all who come confessing their sins and believing in Him.

Communion is therefore offered to those who share this confession of faith. Children who are not yet confirmed are invited to come forward with their parents to receive a blessing. Guests who may have

questions about Communion at Mt. Calvary are encouraged to talk to Pastor Brighton.

PRELUDE

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GREETING PLEDGE TO THE AMERICAN FLAG

In 1892 Congress decreed that the red in the flag of the United States of America should stand for hardiness and courage, the white for purity, and the blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. Let

us pledge our allegiance to our nation’s flag.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

PLEDGE TO THE CHRISTIAN FLAG The white in the Christian flag stands for the righteousness of Christ which is ours by faith, the blue

for faith and hope, and the red cross for Christ’s shed blood and saving sacrifice on Calvary. Let us pledge our allegiance to the Christian flag.

I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag, and to the God for whose Kingdom it stands; one Savior, Jesus Christ, crucified, risen, and coming again, with true life and liberty

for all.

OPENING HYMN: ”God Bless Our Native Land” Hymn #965 THE INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

THE CONFESSION OF SINS AND ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord

Who made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.

And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

(please kneel)

O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor miserable sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserve Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being.

Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen. THE HYMN OF PRAISE: “How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds”

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear! It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds, and drives away our fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole and calms the heart’s unrest; ‘Tis manna to the hungry soul and to the weary, rest.

O Jesus, shepherd, guardian, friend, my Prophet, Priest, and King, My Lord, my life, my way, my end, accept the praise I bring.

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY: Let us pray. Heavenly Father, during His earthly ministry, Your Son, Jesus, healed the sick and raised the dead. By the healing medicine of the Word and Sacraments, pour into our hearts such love toward You that we may live eternally; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

(Please be seated.)

THE OLD TESTAMENT READING: Lamentations 3:21–33 (Jeremiah speaks of the great faithfulness of the Lord!)

21 But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: 22 The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

24 “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” 25 The LORD is good to

those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the

salvation of the LORD. 27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. 28 Let him sit

alone in silence when it is laid on him; 29 let him put his mouth in the dust— there may yet be hope; 30 let him give his cheek to the one who strikes, and let him be filled with insults. 31 For the Lord will

not cast off forever, 32 but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion according to the

abundance of his steadfast love; 33 for he does not afflict from his heart or grieve the children of

men.

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

THE EPISTLE READING: 2 Corinthians 8:1–9 (Paul encourages the Corinthians to excel in the

grace of giving.)

1 We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the

churches of Macedonia, 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme

poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3 For they gave according to their

means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, 4 begging us earnestly for the

favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— 5 and this, not as we expected, but they gave

themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. 6 Accordingly, we urged Titus that as

he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. 7 But as you excel in

everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that

you excel in this act of grace also. 8 I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is

genuine. 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your

sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL IS ANNOUNCED:

The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the fifth chapter.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 5:21—23, 35—43 (Jesus raises Jairus’ daughter from the dead.)

21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about

him, and he was beside the sea. 22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name,

and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the

point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.”

35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter

is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the

ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except

Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the

synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had

entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead

but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father

and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the

hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And

immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were

immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know

this, and told them to give her something to eat.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten son of God, begotten of his Father

before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us

men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under

Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according

to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose

kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and

glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic

Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS: After each petition, the Worship Leader will say, “Lord in Your mercy,” and the

congregation will respond, “Hear our prayer.”

THE GATHERING OF THE TITHES AND OFFERINGS

++ The Stewardship Thought ++

Pentecost Day celebrates the birthday of the Christian Church. The Holy Spirit came upon the early Christians with great power – He does the same today for us – power to

live out the fruit of the Spirit in our daily lives as witnesses to the love of our Savior!

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

OFFERTORY HYMN: “Take My Life and Let It Be”

Take my life and let it be

Consecrated, Lord, to Thee; Take my moments and my days,

Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my silver and my gold Not a mite would I withhold

Take my intellect and use

Ev’ry pow’r as Thou shall choose. -5-

THE ORDER OF HOLY COMMUNION

THE PREFACE The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION THE SHARING OF THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always.

Your love divine has led us in the past; In this free land by You our lot is cast;

Oh, be our ruler, guardian, guide, and stay; Your Word our law, Your paths our chosen way.

From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence,

Make Your strong arm our ever sure defense. Your true religion, in our hearts increase;

Your bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

Refresh Your people on their toilsome way; Lead us from night to never ending day;

Fill all our lives with heav’n born love and grace Until at last we meet before Your face.

American Red Cross Blood Drive: MCLC is sponsoring a blood drive this Tuesday, July 3rd, from

3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. in the fellowship hall. This date is very challenging because of the holiday festivities, but that doesn’t change the need for a pint of blood approximately every two seconds in

America. So, please, help us advertise by telling your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. If not vacationing, you can schedule a blood donation early in the day and still join the city’s July 3rd evening

celebration. There are two ways to schedule an appointment: use the sign-up sheet on the

information counter at church or go to the Red Cross website, “redcrossblood.org” (enter zip code 31088 and find MCLC). If you have any questions, contact Bruce Bauman or the Red Cross at 1-800-
