Go get those flashlights and water now, while the sun is still shining! Don’t wait until it’s too late!” Of course, I’m a minister, and it immediately reminded me of our spiritual preparedness. We don’t know what form the storms will take in our lives, but we know they’re coming. They always come. Now is the time for us to get ready, making plans, stocking up. Scripture preaches with urgency that there’s no time to waste. I wish the community were hastening in prayer like they’re lining up at the gas pumps today. I wish the stores were sold out of Bibles instead of generators. I wish the churches were going to be full as the storms pass through, rather than empty (I’m speaking metaphorically, of course – stay safe!). It reminds me of what Jesus said in Luke 12: "Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. "But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour." We don’t know when the Lord will come, and we don’t know when the storms will come. It could be any time. Now is when we should be engaged in energetic preparation, so that when the storms come we are strengthened, and when the Lord comes we are welcomed home. Remember what’s important. As Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wrote, “We are not physical beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a physical experience.” Let’s be in urgent readiness for our spiritual well being. Dear Friends,

As I write this, the whole of the eastern United States is frantically making preparations for HurricaneIrene’s impending arrival. I hope by the time you read this, we will all be breathing a sigh of relief thatshe passed us by. In the meantime, local officials and governors are urging us to stock up onemergency supplies, batten down the hatches, and prepare for an imminent onslaught. I have plentyof water and batteries, but I did put gas in the car and get some cash from the ATM. I even clearedout one side of the church garage so I could squeeze my new car in there. We don’t know exactlywhat shape this storm is going to take, but we know that the time is now for preparation. I heardGovernor Christie of New Jersey saying, “Today is the day! Go get those flashlights and water now, while the sun is still shining! Don’t wait until it’s too late!”

Of course, I’m a minister, and it immediately reminded me of our spiritualpreparedness. We don’t know what form the storms will take in our lives, butwe know they’re coming. They always come. Now is the time for us to getready, making plans, stocking up. Scripture preaches with urgency that there’sno time to waste. I wish the community were hastening in prayer like they’relining up at the gas pumps today. I wish the stores were sold out of Biblesinstead of generators. I wish the churches were going to be full as the stormspass through, rather than empty (I’m speaking metaphorically, of course – stay safe!).

It reminds me of what Jesus said in Luke 12:

"Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for theirmaster to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him assoon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alertwhen he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat,and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night, or neardawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. "But know this: if the owner of thehouse had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house bebroken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpectedhour."

We don’t know when the Lord will come, and we don’t know when the storms will come. It could beany time. Now is when we should be engaged in energetic preparation, so that when the stormscome we are strengthened, and when the Lord comes we are welcomed home. Remember what’simportant. As Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wrote, “We are not physical beings having a spiritualexperience; we are spiritual beings having a physical experience.” Let’s be in urgent readiness forour spiritual well being.

A VIEW FROM A PEWBy Don De Vries

Did you know Jesus was a woodworker? Well, the Biblesays he was a carpenter, but since I call myself awoodworker, I prefer that term for Him. It lets me feelsomething in common with Jesus as a man. While He nodoubt used different terms than I do to express frustrationover a bad measurement, or a poor cut, I like the idea of a

shared experience. At least we both work with wood, and I can relate to Him on that level.

In Matthew 11:29, Jesus says, “Take my yokeupon you, and learn of me. My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” As a woodworker inGalilee, Jesus no doubt made yokes for theoxen that were used by farmers in that area. Each ox’s neck varied in size from others. Each yoke was individually fitted so the animal’s workcould be done as comfortably as possible. The final fitting was the responsibility of the yokemaker, and I visualize Jesus paring and shaving the wood of the yoke to the best fit. He made itso the work would be easy, and the burden light.

In the same way, Jesus lightens the burdens of those who follow Him faithfully. He calls us to beindividually fitted for His service, and when we do, all the burdens of this life will be lighter. Thekey is to learn of Him, and the source of learning is to regularly study God’s word, the Bible, inwhich Jesus is fully revealed as God, the Son.

When we are yoked in faith to Jesus, we will find some marvelous things happening. First, wewill realize that whatever we are called to do in our work, our family lives, our community, andour church, He provides the strength of spirit so that our burdens are lighter. The story abouttwo masons comes to mind. One was laying bricks, the other was building a church. Which onedo you think found his burden lighter?

Jesus didn’t say that He was putting His yoke on any of us. He urged us each to “take His yokeupon us, and learn of Him.” It’s our choice. He’s waiting to fit His yoke to each of us, but first wehave to put it on. Is your yoke raising a family? Working at a job? Doing well in school?Teaching in the church school? Whatever we are called by God to do, learning of Jesus willmake the burden lighter. I don’t know how to carry my burdens without Him, and I know He’llmake yours lighter, too.

God has given us the Bible. It contains all we need to know about Jesus. He is revealed in theOld Testament laws , and by the prophets. The Gospels attest to His life and teaching, and toHis death and resurrection by which our sins are forgiven. The Bible is the source of our abilityto learn of Him. To obey Jesus, we need to regularly study God’s word. Read First John. It’sshort, but concisely teaches of Jesus. Learn of Him, and His easy yoke.

Learning of Jesus is the purpose of the Faith Discussion Group which resumes meeting onThursday, September 8 at 7:30 to 8:30 PM in the lounge, and meets each Thursday thereafterCome when you can, and learn of Him.

Hello Gilead Families

What I am about to say is horrifying Happy Fall!!!

When Warren asked for our September Shingle material I thought he was joking. How could thesummer have passed so quickly? I certainly did not get done all those things I had planned backin June.

I hope the warm days of summer provided time for lots of enjoyment with your children beforeyou have to be the keeper of the calendar and time again. As you prepare for School take a fewminutes to reflect on last year, how they grew academically, physically, emotionally andspiritually and then talk about this upcoming year. Good to imagine what lies ahead and setsome individual and family goals. Write them down in the planner and see next year if you wereon track

Many planning meetings have already been held at Gilead and, of course, all of us think wehave a great year ahead of us. The Church School staff, Martin, and I will work together to keepGilead youth learning about their Presbyterian beliefs and traditions, exploring other faiths, participating in great mission projects (even our very young), making good friends, and havingfun at our church. Mary of course will have all of them singing and dancing through the seasons.

Please remember the Theme for this Year ‘Do Hard Thing” all of our Youth will need your helpas mentors when we give them some challenges and tough choices to make.

The following are some dates to save as we all know planners fills very quickly with activities:

September 11 Pay tribute to those brave civilians and first responders who lost their lives9/11/01; Please remember to pray for their families, and all our Soldiers.

September 18 Rally Day Christian Education Kick-Off Lunch following Worship Bring adessert or side dish to share ( Beverages, Paper Goods and Set-up provided by YouthGroup) Hot-dogs and burgers provided by Gilead.

This isn’t really true, is it? Suppose a farmerhad 100 bushels of corn in the barn and he decides to plant 10 bushel in the ground. What multiplies? Is it the 90 bushels that he has left in the barn? ANOTHER MOMENT FOR STEWARDSHIP

As a member of Session and husband of a Co- Treasurer, I now officially know WAY more about thechurch’s finances than I ever really cared to. I have seen first-hand how we have to sweat it outmonth to month as we hope and pray that our incoming donations somehow exceed our constantlyincreasing expenses. I marvel at how Brenda and Leanne somehow manage to get the bills paid justbefore the final notices come, and rejoice along with everyoneelse when the Christmas collection plates somehow (andsometimes) get us back into the black just in the nick of time. Itis a very thin tightrope we walk, and to be honest it issometimes terrifying.

As Chairman of the 2011 Stewardship Committee, my job isfairly straightforward. It is to broaden that tightrope a little forthe upcoming year. There are several major issues looming outthere that we really need to be prepared for:

1. Heating is a major expense for us – and another harsh winter combined with spiking oil prices

will create a huge cash flow problem.

2. We desperately need a new furnace. We have been putting it off for some time; however we

really need to get this financed and done before it has to be done on an emergency basis

(which will be much more expensive).

Several rounds of expense cutting have already been done – at this point there is no more fat to cut.Any further reductions will truly cut into the muscle and severely limit our ability to operate as a viablehouse of worship. There are also many other admirable renovation and mission projects thatmembers wish to entertain. In order to be able to undertake any of these, we need to first get off oursubsistence existence and get some breathing room.

Our best pledge year within the past ten years was back in 2005 – when we had a total of 68 pledgesand $122,825 total amount pledged. My goal for 2012 is to improve slightly on those figures:

TARGET NUMBER OF PLEDGES 70TARGET AMOUNT PLEDGED $125,000

I do realize that this is asking a lot, and that we are all worse off economically than we were sevenyears ago. However, I am hoping that all of us will come to appreciate the financial predicament thatour church is in, reflect upon how important the long term viability of the church is to us, and do whatwe need to do to assure its continued survival. I am also hoping that many of you who always donatebut never make an actual pledge will consider making a formal pledge this year. Having a better ideaas to our anticipated upcoming income will greatly assist us as we make our future plans and decidehow much we can accomplish in the upcoming year.

We will be sending out the pledge cards in September, and I ask that all of you take these factors intoaccount and do your best for Gilead.

As always, thanks for your time and God Bless Gilead.

Outreach and Mission

Gilead Food Pantry

The food pantry is in need of almost everything. The reduction instate funding, combined with a growing need for assistance, has

resulted in the food pantry’s shelves becoming bare. The food pantry is still in need of a number ofstaple items on an ongoing basis, such as: complete pancake mix, instant mashed potatoes, spaghetti, sauce, rice, white and brown, cereals, peanut butter, and jelly. Cash donations areappreciated, too, as shopping has to be done on an almost weekly basis for chicken, and other itemslisted above. You can make a check payable to Gilead with a notation that it is for the food pantry.

For more information on this important ministry, please see Marj Williams for more information.

While the goods received during the Kid’s Kitchen Collections have been a great help to thefood pantry, please remember that other things continue to be needed, so please continue tobring other items on non-communion Sundays. Thanks!

Gilead Church School Kid’s Kitchen

As has been our tradition, children bring an offering for the food pantryon the first Sunday of each month. We are expanding upon this tradition

by introducing the Gilead Church School Kid’s Kitchen. Each monthwill have a different theme, and children are requested to bring up an item

related to that theme with them during “Time for the Young at Heart”.

On Sunday February 27 the children brought home a calendar for the year to remind them what tobring each month. Please help your child to remember to bring this important offering for our foodpantry ministry. The August theme is applesauce.

The calendar is also posted on the Church School Bulletin Board by theChurch School entrance.

If you have any questions about this offering project please see DianaDrake Behan.

Weekly Reader for Public School 23

We are again asking for contributions to buy Weekly Reader subscriptions for the children of PublicSchool 23 in the Bronx. PS 23 is an early childhood school serving children in from grades PreK – 3.A majority of the children come from families who are unable to pay the cost of a subscription.

Weekly Reader subscriptions helps the students develop better reading and information literacyskills. A jar is in the lounge for any who may wish to donate to this cause.

Severe weather continues throughout U.S. South

The effects of this year’s spring storms continue to affectmany states; severe storms and tornadoes causedwidespread damage and destruction. As we pray for all who

have been affected by these events, we remember that “Our help is in the name of the Lord, whomade heaven and earth” (Psalm 124:8) and call on the saving power of the Lord Jesus Christ, whom“even the winds and sea obey” (Matthew 8:27).

One Great Hour of Sharing and designated funds from PDA are already at work in at least 17presbyteries this spring as they address disasters within their areas.

In preparing a child for Kindergarten, their philosophy is teaching the whole child to grow. Theyprovide a daily routine balanced between academic skills and lessons, crafts, free and structured playtime, music, story time, computer time, snack, and outdoor activities on the large playground.

The curriculum was developed in conjunction with the area kindergarten teachers to best prepare thechild for kindergarten and instill an enthusiasm for learning in a fun loving environment. Utilizing theteam teaching method, three teachers give a student to teacher ratio of approximately 8 to 1.

For children scheduled to enter public school in September of the year, we routinely prepare adetailed evaluation of Kindergarten readiness.

For more information, please call the school at 845-225-8044.
