OURAIM

Thistwo-dayconference,supportedbytheCentreforEighteenthCenturyStudies,UniversityofYork,celebratesthewritingsoftwomajorauthorsfromtheRomanticPeriod:PercyByssheShelley(PBS)andMaryWollstonecraftShelley(MWS).Acontinuingscholarlyfascinationwithallthings'Shelley'isdueinparttotheunprecedentedaccesswenowhavetotheirtexts(inannotatedscholarlyeditions)andmanuscripts(presentedinfacsimileandtranscript).TheShelleys'worksaremorereadilyavailablethaneverbefore.Similarly,thelackofanannualorevenfrequentconferencededicatedtoPBS(comparabletothosethatexistforotherRomanticwriters)haspromptedthedecisiontoorganisethiseventfor2017.Excitinglyitisnow,inthefirstpartofthe21stcentury,thatthemostdetailedcomprehensiveeditionsofPBS'sworksareinproduction(TheCompletePoetryofPercyByssheShelleyed.DonaldReiman,NeilFraistatandNoraCrookisalreadywelladvanced,withVolVIIpublishedsoon,andThePoemsofShelleyed.KelvinEverest,G.M.Matthews,MichaelRossingtonandJackDonovanisnearingcompletion).PreviousconferencesatGregynogin1978,1980,and1992andthePercyShelleyBicentennialConferenceinNewYorkin1992haveprovidedawonderfullegacyforfutureShelleyanacademics,anditisinthespiritoftheseeventsthatwewillpresentTheShelleyConference2017.WeincludeMWSinthisnewconference,asshealsodoesnothaveherownregularacademicevent.However,therecentconference'BeyondFrankenstein'sShadow'(Nancy,France,2016)focusedspecificallyonMWS,andtheemphasisplacedonherworkatthe'Summerof1816'conference(Sheffield,2016)indicatedthatherroleonthemainstageofRomanticismisincreasinglyappreciated.Itisforthesereasonsthatthe'Shelley'oftheconferencetitleisleftambiguous.TheShelleysareincreasinglyseenasacollaborativeliterarypartnership,andmoderncriticismreinforcestheimportanceofreadingtheirworksinparallel.Thenuancesofthis,however,arefarfromsimple,andthisstatementdoesnotimplythereisanythinglikeasenseofeitherconsistent'unity'or'conflict'whenconsideringtheShelleys'literaryrelationship.ThisisthekindofissuewhichwillbeexploredatTheShelleyConference2017.

Becauseofthesignificantinterestintheconferencewehaveextendedtheeventtotwodays.MultipleparallelpanelsessionshaveallowedustopresentawiderangeofexcitingpapersdeliveredbyresearchersfromtheUK,Europe,andbeyond,aswellasthreeplenarytalksbyeminentShelleyscholars.

Acollectionofartworkscommemoratingthe200thanniversaryofthepublicationofFrankenstein.

MaryShelleywasbornonadaythatsawacometvisiblethroughLondonskies.SheconceivedofFrankensteinonastormynightinGeneva,wheretheairwasheavywiththeaftereffectsofavolcaniceruption.Theelementsseemasignificantpresenceinherinnerandouterlife,asdo‘ghosts’.

TheItalianlandscapeisbothaplaceofliteraryinspirationandasiteofdeepsorrow.Itisindeeda‘landscapesofghosts’asisherearlylifeinLondon,growingupwithoutamother.

ThisartprojectexploreswaysofmakingvisibletheemotionallyandpsychicallychargednatureofMaryShelley’sengagementwith‘place’,aswellastouchingonthemesofhowweremembersomeone,andhowweimaginatively‘reclaim’bonds.
