APRIL, MAY, JUNE 2015 3

Well, here we are already in March and we are booking events into 2016. Great news for our event center. But on a more important but sad note, we had to cancel our long class due to the lack of new candidates. I hope, as should all of you, that this trend will end and we will once again be able to do all the degrees we so proudly have done over the years. If you have not seen all the degrees we do, and would like to, let us know and we will work out something to put them on but we must have participation as it is not practical to do them when only one or two brothers show up. I am still waiting to hear ideas from you as to what you would like to see here at your Rite and more importantly what we can do to bring you back. Our membership is declining at an alarming rate with all the deaths and demits. This is not good news for our future so it is up to all of us to work on membership and bring in new members. If we don’t, we shall surely fail. When you are next here I’d like you to stop by and thank your office staff, who work for you, and without them we’d surely sink. It is with sadness but complete understanding that I announce that we are losing our faithful librarian, Honorable Matthew Marfield, 32°, KCCH, who is moving out of state. We wish him the best and he will be sorely missed. If anyone would like to take his spot please contact your secretary Chuck, who will put you in contact with Ill. Brother John McKenzie. For those of you that like to read, we are so fortunate to have hundreds of books, some dating back several hundred years for your reading pleasure. Next time you are down, stop in and see the library as it is yours too. Be sure to check out the Ernest Borgnine Theatre web page, ernestborgninetheatre.org for all the upcoming plays and musical productions scheduled this year. They are all top notch and inexpensive and are all here for you and the entire family to enjoy. Make plans to attend our High School Teachers Appreciation Night and Maunday Thursday Dinner next month. For those of you who missed our cap and ring ceremony, you missed a fine program in officially welcoming our newest Brothers. May you all stay healthy and happy, and may God Bless

Fraternally,

Tim

THE AUTHORITY OF THE OLD CHARGES

The following article appears in the current Philatethes

Society quarterly mailing and is reprinted with the Society’s

permission. It was originally published in The Philatethes in 1954.

Little was known about the history of Masonry until late in the nine-teenth Century, for our oldest document, known as the Regius Manuscript, was not discovered until A.D. 1838, and it was not published until A.D. 1840. That manuscript was probably written in A.D. 1390, and it was thought to be a document which had been compiled about A.D. 1350 but had become lost. It is true, however, that the information contained in the written record of the Regius Manuscript has existed in the form of Masonic Tradition for many years previous to A.D. 1350. After that date, we have evidence to show, Lodges based their authority on written documents which we now refer to as the Old Charges,

In the Masonic Edition of the Holy Bible, published by the Masonic History Company of Chicago, Brother H.L. Haywood writes about the Old Charges as follows:

“A body of men in the Middle Ages could not legally exist or work unmolested unless it had a charter or some similar document of authorization given and sealed by the authorities of the borough or else by the King or one of his officers. The Freemasons claimed that they belonged to a Fraternity which had received a royal charter from Prince Edwin of York in Athelstan’s time, and held that this was sufficient authorization for their holding a permanent Lodge. This claim was made in the middle of the Fourteenth Century.”

“In substance the Old Charges consist of three parts: first, a statement of grounds on which a charter had originally been issued: second, the claim to a written charter from a Prince Edwin, said to have been a son of King Athelstan; third, a set of rules and regula-tions, called ‘points’ under which Lodge members were governed.”

Chuck Bruggeman, 33°
