Much prayer has been offered for the war in Irak which has been initiated by USA, UK and Australia to rid the world of weapons of mass destruction. United Nations Security Council did not support the invasion, but the coalition proceeded all the same. By early April the coalition forces had control of most of the country and the locals were starting to put essential services back into order. An Alpha program is to commence on 1 May 2003. Approximately 20 Corps folk have responded to the need for various services to be provided. The Youth will commence their Alpha on 2 May 2003. It is hoped that both programs will continue indefinitely. Alpha is now a well proven opportunity around the world in many churches and The Salvation Army to bring the unsaved into the Kingdom. In March six new soldiers were enrolled, Sherene Whittaker, Claire Ruthven, Jeremy Gale, from YP Lisa Hanouch

Deborah Smith This lady and her husband Sam last year operated a restaurant in Camberwell where the youth ran an Alpha course. They provided the meals. Their daughter had been attending youth functions. Lisa then accompanied her daughter. She assimilated gradually, assisting with meals and Mondays and Fridays. It is understood a critical incident occurred . She was walking in the city, wearing a Camberwell SA T shirt and was stopped by a gentleman who wished to make a donation to the Salvation Army. She did not know what to do, but was overcome by the level of trust in the Army , she decided she should take the final step to soldiership. Hallelujah !!. 30th March Greg Rowe was enrolled. Greg had completed an Alpha Course at the Anglican Church in Bowen Street earlier with Major Margaret Goffin, and came to a wonderful new experience of Jesus. A Teaching Series during Sunday Worship has been conducted by our CO’s. (They plan well ahead and promote themes.) This theme is “Colour Your World” and has been most helpful. Two halls were needed for Good Friday morning service. Major Mylechreest spoke on “Justice in an unjust world.” In the afternoon, three halls were used. This was a Divisional Meeting. Wellington South Band (NZ) and Camberwell Songsters were on duty. DC, Major Howard Davies spoke on the death of Jesus being the “death of death”. 11 May 2003. Youth Led Meeting tonight. General Eva Burrows spoke on “Who is a Soldier, and What a Soldier does.” There were two enrolments, Catherine Lingard and Evan Peterson. Both testified strongly. A number of decisions by young people was a cause for much rejoicing. The couple were greatly influenced to this step at a recent “Warrior Weekend” at Phillip Island where a number of young people met to listen to various speakers, Major Brian Pratt, General Eva Burrows, our CO’s etc. on what The Salvation Army is all about and what is involved in soldiership.

Matthew Campbell has visited Africa and Zimbabwe on a number of occasions and has been heavily involved in HIV/Aids problems in that country. A camp has been set up there to cater for children and young people orphaned because of the AIDS virus. After returning from one visit in 2002 Matthew and Ashley Knop the Youth Pastor at Camberwell had a vision that some of our youth should visit Camp Masiye to bring encouragement and to learn at first hand the problems and opportunities in other countries. Many applied to go and 10 were selected.

General Eva Burrows preached in the 6 pm service after many young people took part. She gave valuable insight into condition, and culture matters in Zimbabwe and then gave her blessing on the ten young people. Many others came forward to pledge prayer support for the mission. It turned out to be a huge success. In addition, an ensemble was formed, Neville Phillpot, and another violinist, two cellos, two flutes, two cornets, three trombones, timpani, drums, piano and organ. Coral Schilling, was the focal point on piano. A wonderful person for all such occasions, and many others. In excess of 600 people attended. Major Peter Mylechreest gave a succinct message at the end and after having small cards distributed, invited people to pray the prayer printed on it.
