ROYAL FOREST AND BIRD
PROTECTION SOCIETY OF
NEW ZEALAND
Who Are They?
Forest & Bird is New Zealand’s largest independent conservation organization that works to preserve our natural heritage and native species. Forest & Bird is New Zealand’s longest-serving conservation organization, formed in 1923 in response to widespread extinction of native species and destruction of our native forests.
Established to protect our native forests and birds, their role has been extended in recent years to include protection of ALL native species and wild places – on land and in our oceans, lakes and rivers. What work do
they do?
SOME OF THEIR SUCCESSFUL
WORK…
SUCCESSFUL WORK AS FOLLOWS…:
• They Established a network of 38 reserves and sanctuaries.
• Successfully campainged for greater protection for our native animals.
• They work with international partners such as Birdlife International
• Published awareness-raising publications and guides.
• Created a number of awareness-raising events.
• Established eight lodges throughout the country for up close wildlife encounters.
Forest and Bird is not a government organization so they do not receive government funding – They rely on the generosity of members’ subscriptions, donations and bequests to carry out their conservation work.
How Do They
Afford To Do Their
Work?
Forest & Bird has about 70,000 supporters in 50 branches that work on a variety of conservation activities, from re-forestation to lobbying, bird monitoring to weed-busting. Although the variety of jobs Forest & Bird undertakes has broadened they now look after all of New Zealand's native flora, fauna, habitats and natural scenic values.
WHO OR WHAT DO THEY ESPECIALLY CARE ABOUT?
WHAT INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS DO TO HELP
THEM?
The members, sponsors and volunteers of Forest & Bird are the back bone of this organization and carry out the many tasks and aspects of what this charity is about, these roles include things from campaigning, funding, raising awareness, planting and scouting… ect.
Because New Zealand has lived in isolation for 80 million years it’s wildlife can be found nowhere else on
this planet. It is unique and if the Forest and Bird charity was not there then many of the native birds and plants may become extinct making New Zealand a plain and
boring country, it would be a crisis for the world.
Why Is It Important That What They Care For IS
Conserved?
