Your Committee will be considering what form such a celebration should take, within the framework of the programme of events proposed by the British Community Committee, and by its member associations. Also included in this Newsletter are the results of our two Sweepstakes, the Aintree Grand National and the Epsom Derby. Your Treasurer and Committee wish to thank most warmly all those who participated. Looking to the medium distance we are pleased to announce that we have been able to obtain the agreement of the Director of Music of the Coldstream Guards to have their Cornet player L/Cpl Robert Parry play the Last Post and Reveille at the Commonwealth Service of Remembrance at the Cathédrale de Notre Dame de Paris on 11 th November. We have also been promised the musical support of our piper Murdoch Macleod to play both when leading the entrance procession, and then the Lament on leaving the Cathedral. Both musicians had expressed their own personal wish to perform for us once more. This in itself is a compliment to our Chaplain, Rev. Philip Mounstephen, and to the hard work of our Secretary and Parade Marshal. We wish you a very happy and restful Summer break, in the hope that you will support the Ceremony of Rekindling the Flame at the Arc de Triomphe on 4 th August, details of which are enclosed. “We will remember them” Chairman

SECRETARIES SCREED

For those of you who joined in the 90th Anniversary Dinner Dance at the Ecole Militaire, I hope you had an enjoyable time. A lot of hard work went into organising this event, which Joan Hicks and I took great pride in doing. We have had a lot of nice comments about the evening including 'How did you manage to do it for the price'. Well we tried to keep it as low as we possibly could to entice you and your friends to join us. We did have a few comments about our raffle being not very good. What do you want when all the gifts are given to us! Also I was amazed to hear some complain about the band being too loud. Come on guys, it was a 20 piece Big Band for God’s sake. I asked those at the front of the room, namely Ron Glen and his group, if the music was causing them problems and the answer was 'heck no lass, we have been to rowdier football matches'. I would like to thank Ron Glen for bringing 27 from The Robert Louis Stevenson Society. You looked splendid in your Highland Dress and one lady who came all the way from Japan, dressed in her National costume; she looked lovely. I would also like to thank Didier Dumont, who brought a group of his friends and colleagues and an Officer of the Coldstream Guards. Other groups included The Stags, a group of retired Brits who play golf, living in Yvelines and their wives and a group who call themselves The Brits and their wives also from the Yvelines area. Many thanks to those of you who contacted friends and family to join us. Some of those present came from the South of France and the U.K. Our next big event is the annual Rekindling of the Flame at the Arc de Triomphe on 4th August. This year it falls on a Thursday. We will be joined by a group from the Pilgrimage Department of the Royal British Legion. They will be visiting the War Graves in the Somme area before coming up to Paris to join us. Because of the large group and our own members and friends who we expect to be at the ceremony, we will be holding our reception at the British Embassy Chancery. Please could I ask you, if you intend to come to the Arc de Triomphe and then to the reception at the Chancery, to fill in the form with this Newsletter and send it to Joan Hicks so that we can cater accordingly and more important, we need your name and any guests you may bring for the Security list. Please bring along some form of I.D., as this may be asked for. The time of the ceremony is 18h30. For those of you who wish to march behind the Standards, please be at the top of the Champs Elysees (by the RER exist) at 18h00. Standard Bearers should be at the same place by 17h45. We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. Joan, Mark Yates and I would like to wish you all a very pleasant summer with family and friends. We will be waiting for the arrival of our third Grandchild in mid-August, Our summer is going to be quite full! Janet Warby Joan Hicks Mark Yates Hon Secretary Social Secretary Membership Secretary
