  2. 2. The Role of Historic Preservation in Urban Planning Politician and business owner David Roberts served the city of Hoboken, New Jersey, as mayor from 2001 to 2009. During his tenure as mayor, David Roberts supported an ordinance to create the Castle Point Historic District. To this day, Hoboken benefits from his efforts to preserve and enhance the citys culture and history.
  3. 3. The Role of Historic Preservation in Urban Planning Historic preservation refers to the practice of conserving old buildings and districts, usually within cities. In the United States, the term historic preservation did not gain widespread acceptance until the 1960s, though it had already been practiced for centuries. In 1949, the U.S. National Trust for Historic Preservations development of specific preservation goals and guidelines spurred the standardization of historic preservation in urban planning educational programs and professional practices.
  4. 4. The Role of Historic Preservation in Urban Planning A commitment to historic preservation provides an urban center with many benefits, both tangible and intangible. It connects local populations to their cultural history, fostering a sense of place and a commitment to the local community. Further, a citys unique architectural qualities draw tourists and new residents, thereby improving economic prospects. A city with its historical structures intact provides more opportunities for historical engagement and reflection than one overtaken by modern skyscrapers.
