Dear Rocky Hill Families, It is hard to believe that we are a quarter of the way through the school year already. It is amazing how fast the times goes. I hope you all have had some time to enjoy autumn with your family and are looking forward to the upcoming holiday season. November will be a very busy month for the PTA. We have our major fundraiser Joe Corbi beginning November 2nd, and the Book Fair will start on November 8th. Parent confer- ences will take place on November 12th and 13th, and report cards will be distributed on No- vember 14th. November is a great time to take stock of your life and find all the things for which you are thankful. I am very grateful for my family and friends who enrich my life and give it meaning. I am thankful for the outstanding staff at RHMS who make my children’s education so incredi- ble. I am especially grateful for the countless volunteers who make our PTA and help the school run so well. Everyone does an outstanding job. The end result is a school that is sec- ond to none. At Rocky Hill, so many of us are blessed with everything we need food, water, shelter, healthcare and education. Give thanks for what you have and share what you can with others. Please make plans to join us for our next PTA meeting on Tuesday, December 11th at 7:00pm in the RHMS Media Center. Our Reflections Arts Program participants’ work will be on dis- play and our RHMS winners will be announced. You will be amazed at the quality of work our students produce. I hope to see you there!!! Dear Rocky Hill Families,

It is hard to believe that we are a quarter of the way through the school year already. It is amazing how fast the times goes. I hope you all have had some time to enjoy autumn with

your family and are looking forward to the upcoming holiday season.

November will be a very busy month for the PTA. We have our major fundraiser – Joe Corbi

– beginning November 2nd, and the Book Fair will start on November 8th. Parent confer-ences will take place on November 12th and 13th, and report cards will be distributed on No-

vember 14th.

November is a great time to take stock of your life and find all the things for which you are thankful. I am very grateful for my family and friends who enrich my life and give it meaning. I

am thankful for the outstanding staff at RHMS who make my children’s education so incredi-ble. I am especially grateful for the countless volunteers who make our PTA and help the school run so well. Everyone does an outstanding job. The end result is a school that is sec-

ond to none.

At Rocky Hill, so many of us are blessed with everything we need – food, water, shelter, healthcare and education. Give thanks for what you have and share what you can with others.

Please make plans to join us for our next PTA meeting on Tuesday, December 11th at 7:00pm in the RHMS Media Center. Our Reflections Arts Program participants’ work will be on dis-

play and our RHMS winners will be announced. You will be amazed at the quality of work our students produce. I hope to see you there!!!

Please remember our veterans this Veterans Day, those now serving around the world and

those who have bravely served in the past. Give thanks for the small things that you some-times take advantage of. Be grateful for all of the wonderful people in your lives who support you, and most importantly, give your children the continuing gift of your love and support.

I wish you all a safe and fulfilling Thanksgiving holiday.

Last Day of School

GIFT OF SAM BLOOD AND TOY DRIVE

Dear Rocky Hill Family,

On Saturday, December 15th, Rocky Hill will be holding the first annual “Gift of Sam” blood and toy drive in honor of former student, Sam Moore (’10) from

9am to 3pm at Rocky Hill Middle School in the gym areas. Sam, a former Will-power Award Winner, passed away in August from a brain tumor that was dis-

covered while he was at Rocky Hill. He fought valiantly throughout his illness. He never lost his will to live, his positive outlook or his sense of humor. Sam

also decided that if he were to pass away from the disease he wanted to be able to help other children. He decided to donate his brain to science to help the

research continue.

In order to honor this special gift from Sam, the “Gift of Sam” blood and toy drive to benefit Children’s Hospital and the Washington Hospital Center was conceived. You can honor Sam in a couple of ways. First, you can sign up to do-

nate blood on December 15th (An online sign up “sheet” will be up and running soon! Stay tuned!). Second, you can donate a new, unwrapped toy on that same

day. You can choose to donate blood, a toy, or both! Please help us honor Sam’s gift of love, with our gift of life. Our goal is to reach 130 pints of blood

and 100 toys by the end of the drive that day. Students will be here to assist with the toy drive. Nurses will be here from both establishments to draw the

blood donations.

We hope you will be able to help us honor Sam Moore on December 15th, the day after his birthday, and give the gift of life. It is our way of keeping Our Sam

alive in all of us. Stay tuned to the RHMS website and PTA Newsletter for fur-ther information.

A Salute to Service

Please join us for a Veteran's Day tribute to all who have served our country through military service, par-

ticularly those in our Rocky Hill community. We will gather outside the school around the flagpole at 11am on Friday, November 9. There will be a brief service with remarks by our principal Mr. Edmundson, as well

as a representative of the American Legion, and a moving tribute by our Rocky Hill chorus. The service is expected to last approximately 25 minutes with a reception for veterans and current military personnel af-

terwards.

Please help honor our veterans and active military personnel by sending in pictures of family who have past or current service in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard or Na-tional Guard to be displayed in our school entryway during the month of November. All pictures

will be returned at the end of November. Forms for submitting pictures can be found on the Rocky Hill web-site and in the school office. Questions: Contact Janet Kukla at [email protected]

French 1A students are completing their “Welcome to French Class” unit, while French 1B classes are com-

pleting the “Clothing” unit.

Spanish 1A students took their first unit exam – written and oral – and are learning about the Hispanic holi-day “Día de los Muertos”. After reading and watching a video about the holiday, students will record the P –

products, P – practices, and P – perspectives, and then demonstrate their knowledge through an art project. Our next unit is “Activities” – chapter 1A.

Spanish 1B students recently finished their “Family” unit and are also taking another look at Day of the Dead.

Each class will be doing an artistic activity. Our next unit is “Home”.

World Language classes are high school credit classes. The final grade will be calculated in the following man-ner: 4 quarter grades averaged (75%) and the final exam in June (25%). That final grade will be the beginning

of your student’s high school GPA. As your student reflects on their achievements in quarter 1, this may be a good time to discuss high school credit and the GPA.

Baseball Day in Sixth Grade

On October 25th, sixth-grade students celebrated the World Series in a special interdisciplinary event: Baseball

Day. Many students wore their baseball apparel. Each subject explored baseball in a unique way.

English—Classes viewed “Who’s On First” and wrote baseball poems.

Math—Students calculated batting averages by converting fractions to decimals and tested their reaction time.

Science—Students discovered that Isaac Newton, a sports fan, played baseball. They investigated how the mass of a ball & bat affected velocity, acceleration, and momentum.

Reading—Students studied print and non-print text about baseball.

Chorus—Students learned to sing the classic song, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

Band/Orchestra—Students learned to play the classic song, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Many students

performed for their peers throughout the day.

FACS—Students learned about stove-top safety by cooking hotdogs. They also completed a cost analysis of hotdogs cooked at home versus hotdogs purchased at a professional stadium.

Art—Students made origami baseball boxes.

Dear RH Parents,

I hope this note finds you healthy, happy, and in a good place with your family. November is about elections, the giving

of thanks, and Parent Conferences. Teachers are looking forward to meeting with you on Monday, November 12

at our “Arena Style” conferences. You are invited to come and meet with your child’s teachers any time from 1:00pm

to 7:00pm. Parents are asked to arrive no later than 6:30pm as our conferences will end promptly at 7:00p.m. When

you arrive, you will be given a map of where each teacher is ‘stationed’ so you can plan out your visit. Please be pa-

tient while in line and value the time other parents have with the staff, as they will value your time.

Here at Rocky Hill, we have an incredibly supportive and involved community, built through a mutual respect between

staff and families. Our home-school connection is most effective when we:

Work together for the sake of student success, both academically and social/emotionally. The communication

triad of “Parent, Teacher, and Student” can lead to great results for all involved.

Recognize that a child’s teacher is a primary source of information regarding academics. Teachers interact on a

daily basis with students and their insights and reflections are valuable. Talking directly with your child’s

teacher about questions, ideas, and concerns is in the best interest of your child.

Activate your Edline account. Individualized parent activation codes have been provided and recently emailed

home to those not activated. Stay in tuned with your child’s academic progress.

Stay well informed and keep us informed. We know how much information needs to be exchanged and under-

stand that sometimes the amount of information is overwhelming. The more we are able to effectively ex-

change information, the more we will be able to help a child make steady progress.

Respond promptly to teacher requests for information. Again, we understand that there is so much information

to process these days that it sometimes feels difficult to keep up, but teachers really appreciate it when fami-

lies respond in a timely manner to requests for papers to be signed, information to be provided, etc. It takes

time to keep track of which student has or has not responded, and to send out multiple notices. Even a nice

note telling a teacher that you are not able to volunteer in a classroom or come to a conference is of great

help to teachers.

Give people the benefit of the doubt. Everyone is trying to do the best they possibly can.

Ask questions for clarification, before making assumptions. Sometimes things are not quite as they might first

appear.

Coach children on how to seek information and solve their own conflicts. One of our primary goals is to help

students become independent, self-sufficient, responsible citizens. Empowering them with responsibilities

helps build toward this goal.

Practice simple acts of kindness. This can start an amazing trend of thoughtful and kind acts. You never know

what one nice gesture will lead to, and to think how wonderful a world it would be if everyone did this on a

regular basis!

We are one-fourth of our way through the school year. As we move forward, your focus at home, working with our

focus here at school will certainly lead to success for all students at RHMS. See you soon at the conferences.
