TRANSCRIPT

“This November” informs us that this is a teaser poster rather than an official release date. This means that the audience will need to be proactive to find out more about the film and to make them aware of the film coming soon so they should expect to see magazine articles, news reports etc. which will contain more information about the upcoming film.

This is a modern film and along with this is a fan base of fans that are wanting to see films that are sequels or directors of other popular films that the fan base enjoys. It is a modern film due to the use of editing that is used on the poster as older films will not have as good and strong editing as this poster does. It also mentions the name “Sarah Michelle Gellar” as she is a famous actress and director therefore fans of Sarah will want to watch this film to see their favourite actor/director.

This is a hook for the audience as they have the phrase “The past never dies. It kills” to look at and analyse. This phrase gets the audience thinking of what possibilities the phrase could be and that they have to watch the film to find out what the hidden meaning is behind the phrase.

The denotation of this poster reveals that the protagonist’s eye is not completely visible as the hand takes the place of the pupil and surrounding area leaving a white eye. This connotes the feeling of being trapped and enclosed. This is a very effective way to draw in the audience’s attention as it makes the audience think of what has happened in the storyline and makes them think of the possible outcomes of the situation. The hand is trapped behind the eye suggesting to the audience that the protagonist’s head is caught up with a situation and cannot sort the situation out which will have an impact on the storyline. The eye in the image is very symbolic as it connotes preview, glimpse and hope. This tells the audience that the protagonist’s real sight has been taken away and has been replaced with signs of torture. This links in with the genre of the film as themes such as torture are included in one of the many conventions of Horror. This makes the audience intrigued to find out what happens in the film and makes them want to watch the entire film to find out unanswered questions.

This is an extreme close-up, where we can only see the protagonist’s eye and the surrounding surface area. The extreme close-up is used to highlight the lack of emotion in the protagonist’s and this makes the audience think about the relevance behind the image. The extreme-close up shows the eye and the surrounding skin. The make-up used around the eye is very dark to make the skin look very dirty and scratched. This is an effective way to show the protagonist and what the protagonist has been doing as it shows that the protagonist has been in some kind of trouble but does not give too much away about the storyline and leaves the audience thinking about what possibly could of happened to the protagonist. As the audience do not know what has happened, they will then need to watch the film to find out the storyline and to see the unanswered questions that they may have involving the plot. The editing in the image is a band that appears to be stretching and pushing behind the eye. This shows that there’s no escape and leaves the audience thinking about what could possibly happen in the storyline and makes the audience want to watch the entire film. The low key lighting in the poster really highlights the eye and shows the audience that the dark surroundings are used to make the poster look scarier.

The age rating for the film “One Missed Call” is PG 13. As the age range is the lowest teenage year, this means that the targeted audience is of a much wider range of teenagers than it would be if the age range was 15+. The main target audience is teenagers. The target audience being from 13-19 is a very good target as younger people tend to enjoy genres such as horror as teenagers are stereotypically identified as energy junkies, meaning that they strive from the build up of tension and the content of horror films in general. Teenagers and young adults are more likely to watch Horror films than people aged 30+ as other films are targeted at the elder generation that are not targeted at the younger generation. Having a target audience makes the producers more aware of the things they should include in thing that are relevant and relate to the audience. As the target audience is teenagers, the production company have included ideas of paranormal activity such as the hand in the eye to attract the teenagers attention as it is not something people see everyday and including this in a film will draw the audience’s attention and make them interested in the storyline.

The representation of demons in this poster is showing that they are very possessive and that they are going to be trapped inside the protagonists head. Another representation of protagonists is show in this poster as the protagonist is never fully revealed in the poster of the film to make the audience think about what the protagonist is going to look like.

The purpose of this poster is to make the audience aware of the upcoming film and to make the film become popular/well known to other possible viewers. The message behind this poster is demons from the after-life living in the protagonists head. It shows that the thought of after-life is very daunting and thinking about it may result in bad consequences. This leaves the audience thinking and questioning how the protagonist’s actions are going to effect the storyline. Another message behind the poster is that the protagonist is the most powerful in the storyline and that everything that is going to happen throughout the duration of the film is going to be a consequence of what the protagonist has done leaving the audience wanting to know more about the storyline and protagonist.

This poster is a very effective way of making the targeted audience engaged to the storyline. Having a dark background and features conveys death and pain and this is represented through the use of the eye. The eye is very intimidating and is very effective as it looks like the eye is watching the audience. The audience will feel that they are being convinced to watch the film and that they will watch the film. The protagonist has an effect on the audience as they are not aware of what the protagonist fully looks like as they have only had the preview of an eye. The audience are left thinking of what the protagonist is going to look like and what gender is the protagonist going to be.

Intertextual references in the poster that is other media to do with the film for example www.thereturnmovie.co.uk is used indicating that other media platforms are offering more information about this upcoming film such as more information on what the film is about, when the film is going to be released etc. This intertextual reference may also reveal the trailer of the film to the audience and other things such as clips of the film which helps to promotes the film. This makes the audience aware of where they can find out more information if they are interested in knowing more about the film and even going to watch the film. Having a website that is related to the film is a good way of marketing the film as a lot of young people use the internet a lot more than they read things such as newspaper articles as everything is now available online. The conjuring poster is also online on various social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Reaching out to young adults online makes it easier for the target audience of teenagers/young adults to be able to view and see the poster. It also means that the poster is viewable from portable platforms making it a lot more accessible.

“The Return” is used as an effective way of telling the audience that demons are returning from the after life and with the use of the hand, tells the audience that the demons are trying to escape from the protagonists mind. The title “The Return” is also blurred giving the audience the idea of the protagonists life being just a blur. This is abnormal as it would not happen in the real life leaving the audience excited to watch the film as it is all based around an imaginary world. “The past never dies, It kills” relates with the idea of a demon being trapped behind the protagonist as it tells the audience that whatever happened in the past is going to come back to the present day and is going to hurt people in the present day. This has an effect on the audience as it makes the audience want to know the storyline and want to find out what past is going to come back to haunt the characters in the film.
