The Reporter

2016. In three short months summer

and NIMCON V will be here. Can’t

wait to see what everyone builds this

year!

We kicked off 2016 with our annu-

al Holiday Party. And in the spirit

of the new year the party was held

at a new venue, The Golf Club of

Illinois. I don’t think it is a stretch

to say that the location was warm

and inviting. The staff was atten-

tive and the food was great.

As is our tradition we held our an-

nual club contest in conjunction

with the holiday party. Once again

the contest tables were filled with

amazing models including aircraft,

armor, autos, dioramas, ships, sci-

fi, and fantasy.

Of course the party wouldn’t be

complete without a great raffle.

Over $1000.00 in kits were up for

grabs.

The holiday party is also where we

recognize the club’s member of the

year. I feel kind of funny saying

this in an article I’ve written but

yours truly was given this honor. I

greatly appreciate the recognition

but can honestly say I do what I do

because I enjoy the great group of

guys we have. Thanks everyone.

About six or seven of us hung out

long after the party to share a cou-

ple of beers and good conversation.

So now we’re off and running for

Happy New Year

NIMCON V

And speaking of NIMCON we still need vol-

unteers especially the day of the show. Please

see one of the officers at the next meeting and

let us know what you’re interested in helping

with. The show success depends on your sup-

port!

Always looking for more!

Club Dues

Just a friendly reminder that it is time to re-

new your membership for 2016. Our dues re-

main unchanged at $10.00. Please renew by the

March meeting. Among other benefits paid

members are admitted to our April auction for

free. So don’t delay and pay today.

Club Auction

Speaking of the club auction this will be held in

place of our April meeting. Please be generous

in donating kits. It is a great opportunity to

pick up nice kits at a low cost. The auction also

helps us stock our NIMCON raffle and shopper

rewards table at NIMCON.

The Briefing Room

By Tom Reese

2016 certainly got of to a fabulous start with our Holiday Party at the Golf Club of Illinois in

Algonquin. Forty-nine members and guests enjoyed the elegant surroundings and the delicious

food. Our raffle was a big hit and the contest was populated with beautiful models. We’re hop-

ing for similar success during the rest of the year with our various monthly programs, auction,

and NIMCON 5. Please start looking through your stash of kits for something to donate to the

auction in April. Success here translates into more items for the NIMCON raffle in May. The

”Vendor Support” program will need kits also, so please keep that in mind as well. It’s not too

late to send John Graham any photos of your hobby area for our second installment of the

“Hobby Cave” show - we could use a few more. This month’s Show & Tell theme, “It’s Alive,” is

a play on the famous quote referring to Frankenstein. To qualify for a free raffle ticket, bring

in a built (or at least, started) kit of a “one off,” or experimental vehicle that was not put into

production. Here’s you chance to show off something a little different. See you at the meeting

For those of you who know me well, you’re aware of

my admiration for the aircraft produced by the now

defunct Republic Aviation Corporation from Farm-

ingdale, Long Island, NY. I like all their machines

from the P-35 to the F-105 and everything in be-

tween, like the XF-103 and XP-72. Naturally, then,

I was attracted to the one-hundredth volume of the

Warpaint Series about the Thunderstreak and

Thunderflash. I have several other books in the se-

ries and this one does not disappoint.

The F-84F was initially a swept-winged version of

the original F-84 Thunderjet. Things didn’t quite

pan out that way and it became virtually a new air-

craft. However, given the political and fiscal climate

at the time, funding was more readily available for

upgrades rather than all new designs. Thus, we

have the straight-winged F-84G coming after the

swept-winged F-84F. Typical for aircraft of the

time, there were lots of teething problems and chal-

lenges getting the aircraft into operational service.

Issues were eventually worked out, but the Thun-

derstreak was never a “hot” fighter. Rather, it found

its niche as a fighter-bomber.

Following the format seen in their earlier books,

this volume is chock full of pictures, statistics, and

information about both aircraft. The author starts

with a brief history of Republic’s jet fighters, as well

as, some of their experimental versions that didn’t

see production. This narrative also includes the

basic RF-84F, as well as, the FICON version. Oper-

ational histories of each aircraft is next. Here,

Stafrace covers the problems encountered getting

these machines into squadron operations. Though

both aircraft served in the USAF, greater num-

bers saw service in foreign air forces. NATO coun-

tries were big users. There is detailed coverage

for each country’s operations and lists of the seri-

al numbers used by each one. These jets saw

combat with the French and Turkish Air Forces.

Throughout, there are pictures of the aircraft in

these foreign air forces. Near the end of the book

is a several page spread with “walkaround” pho-

tos, a fold-out section with 5-view line drawings,

and a one page list of available models and acces-

sories for these aircraft.

I would recommend this book wholeheartedly to

anyone interested in the Thunderstreak and

Thunderflash or 1950’s jets. The wide usage of

these two aircraft provides lots of marking and

camouflage options for the modeler. I haven’t seen

this volume in any hobby shops, so you might

have to go to the website to get your copy.
