DearReader,

ThetopicwhichalmostreceivedmorepublicattentioninCentralEuropeatthebeginningofJunethanthenotoriousbankingandfinancialcrisiswasthecold,wetweather.Forweeks,theskywasovercastduetoaseeminglyimmovablebadweatherfront,andtherewasvirtuallynodifferencebetweendrivingthroughacarwashanddrivingoutofdoors.Therefore,theluckwehadwiththeweatheronthedatewehadchosenforourCompetenceDaysseemsalmostlikeanactofprovidencegrantedtous.On24and25April,wewereabletowelcomemorethan1,100guestswithwarmsummer-timetemperaturesatWITTMANNBATTENFELD’sinjec-tionmoldingmachinemanufacturingplantinKottingbrunn.

Fromthefeedbackwehavereceived,weareconfidentthatweweresuccessfulincommunicatingourinjectionmoldingcompetenceonabroadfront.Numerousinterestingap-plicationsusingultra-modernprocessesweredemonstratedon17differentprocessingmachines.Morethan30exhibitsfromtheautomationandperipheralequipmentsectorswereshowcasedaswell.Notonlywerethenumerousexhibitsmetwithlivelyinterest,butalsothenewassemblyhallfornewmachines,whichwasofficiallyopenedduringthisyear’sCompetenceDaysandwillenableustospeeduptheproduc-tionofourlargeMacroPowermachinesinthefuture.

On13June,WITTMANNRobotSystemeGmbH,basedinGermanyandspecializinginautomation,celebratedtheinaugurationofitsnewplantinNuremberg–andsimultane-ouslyits30thanniversary.Thirtyyearsprior,theacquisitionofthesmallNurembergautomationcompanyKüffnerTech-nologielaidthefoundationforWITTMANNGermanyandultimatelyledtotheriseofWITTMANNtoworldmarketleadershipinrobottechnologyfortheplasticsindustry.

OnthisoccasionwewereabletowelcomenumerouscustomerstoournewfacilityinNuremberg,primarilyfromSouthGermany.Themainemphasisoftheexhibitionwasonautomation,althoughexhibitsfromourentireproductportfoliowereshownaswell.Ourguestswerealsogivenanopportunitytoattendexpertpresentationsoncurrentplasticsprocessingissues,and,ofcourse,theeventwasaccompaniedbyaculinaryandsocialprogramaswell.

NowIwishyougreatpleasureinreadingthisissueofinno-vations,inwhichweareagainreportingaboutsomeinterest-ingapplicationsinuse–whetherinGermany,theUSA,orinSouth-EastAsia.AportraitoftheWITTMANNrepresenta-tiveofficeinthebuoyantPolishmarketroundsoffthisissue.

MANNBATTENFELDtrulydemonstrateditscompetenceandpoweroverthesetwodays.However,notonlytheex-hibitsweremetwithlivelyinterest.Thenewassemblyhallforlargemachines,whichwasofficiallyopenedduringthisevent,alsoattractedmanyvisitors’attention.Afterall,thenewproductionfacilitiesconstituteasubstantialmovetosecurethecompany’sfutureasaleadingpartnerforin-jectionmoldingmachineryrangingfrommicromachinesrightuptotheMacroPower,thelargemachinemodelthatismanufacturedinthishall.

Lectures and discussions

Theguestsweregiveninsightintothelatestinjectionmoldingandprocesstechnologiesbyanumberofexpertpresentationsonspecialtopics.TheintroductoryspeechinthisserieswasheldbyProf.Dr.AnsgarJaeger,ProfessorofInjectionMoldingandMoldTechnologyattheWürzburgUniversityofAppliedScience,andwastitled,“Megatrendsreflectedininjectionmoldingtechnology”.Dr.Jaegar’spre-sentationwasfollowedbyanotherguestspeaker,HelmutKohake,ManagingDirectorofMüllerTechnik,whodis-cussedprocesscombinations.

TherewerevariousotherpresentationsdealingwiththeadvantagesofthePowerSeries,integratedproductioncells,technologyforprocessingbulkmaterials,microtechnol-ogyandthecombinationofvariothermictechnologywithstructuredfoamtechnology.

Machines and technologies

Themachinerydemonstrationwasopenedwithanexcit-ingshowprogram,startingwithdrummersandfollowedbyaerialacrobats,andvisitorswereguidedtotheexhibitionbytheWITTMANNBATTENFELDrobotman.Duringthesubsequentmachinerydemonstration,theguestswereabletoexperiencethecompany’s“power”liveonsite.

OnehighlightamongthemachinedemonstrationswasthepresentationofthefirstMacroPowerElargehybridmachinemodel,consistingofamodern,servo-hydraulictwo-platenclampingunitcombinedwithanall-electrichigh-performanceinjectionunit.Thiscombinationenables

OtherhighlightsincludedaMicroPower15withanLSRequipmentpackage,onwhichamedicaltechnologyap-plicationwasdemonstrated,thepresentationoftheIMIWprocess(In-MouldInternalWelding)onanEcoPower110withamoldsuppliedbyBarkley,UK,andanEcoPowerXpress180withIMLandhigh-speedpartsremoval.IMLtechnologywasalsopresentedonanEcoPower180produc-ingcreditcardsfromabiodegradablematerial,whichhasbeendevelopedbyIFA-Tulln,Austria.

CELLMOULD®structuredfoamtechnologywasdem-onstratedbymanufacturingpalletsonaMacroPower800withamoldsuppliedbyHaidlmair.Withgreatenthusiasm,thevisitorswatchedtheproductionofahockeystick–alsowithamoldfromHaidlmair–onahydraulicmachinefromtheHMseries,anHM300,usingtheAIRMOULD®gasinjectionprocess.BFMOLD®variothermictechnologyandmulti-componenttechnologywerenotneglectedeither.Themachineryprogramwasroundedoffbyademonstra-tionofahigh-speedTMXpressandaVM110rotarytablemachine.

Theexhibitionprogramwascomplementedwithex-tensiveautomationequipmentandthecompleterangeofperipheralappliancessuppliedbytheWITTMANNGroup.Automationandperipheralequipmentweredemonstratedbothmountedontheinjectionmoldingmachinesandasstand-alonesolutions.•

Peripheral equipmentintegrated in the robot’s control system

EachMS-Schrambergproductioncellcomeswiththesameexternaldimensionsandgriddimensions,andeachisdividedintosixcompartmentswherethenecessaryprocessingequipmentisinstalled.

Allperipheralappliancesoftheproductioncell–frommaterialfeedingandsortingequipmenttothepackagingstation–areintegratedinthecontrolsystemoftheWITT-MANNrobot,whichprovides192freeinputandoutputportalsforthispurpose.

Moreover,thelatest-generationWITTMANNR8.2controlsystemislaidoutasstandardtocommunicateviaitsR8-CLI(CommandLineInterface)withthecentralcomputerofMS-Schramberg,whereallrelevantproduc-tiondataiscollected,processedandsaved.

Inthisway,thesystemenablesa100%erroranalysisforeverypartthatmaybesortedoutasdefectivelater,thusprovidingseamlessqualitycontrol.Here,qualityinspec-

tionofthepartsisal-readycarriedoutinsidetheproductioncell.Inmanycells,thistaskisperformedbycamerasys-temsinstalledatcriticalpoints.Sincethispro-cessmakesdownstreamqualityin-

spectionoutsidetheproductioncellsredundant,theproducts,whichhavebeenfinishedandcheckedinsidetheproductioncell,canalsobepackagedinsidethecellandpassedontotransportbymaterialhandlingequipment.Suchhigh-techequipment,however,canonlybeutilizedefficientlyifthenumbersofunitsperorderexceedtheonemillionmark.

TheperfectadaptabilityofWITTMANNrobotstotheexistingperipheralequipmentatMS-Schrambergistheresultofhavingthedesignofthenecessaryinterfacesdevelopedinclosecooperationbetweenbothcompaniesforaconsiderabletime.

Apartfromthat,allmechanicalandelectricalplug-and-socketconnectionsontherobotarestillpreparedintheWITTMANNproductionplant.AnotherprincipleadheredtobyMS-Schrambergisthegoalofkeepingallstepsthatprecedeproductioninthecompany’sownhands,fromdevelopingthemold,partsremovalandinsertiontechnology,totheconstructionandequipmentofextreme-lycomplexproductioncells.

Thankstothisapproach,planneddowntothelastdetail,MS-Schramberghasreachedavirtuallyunrivalledlevelofreliability,whichpromptscustomerstomorefrequentlyinvolveMS-Schramberginthedevelopmentoftheirprod-uctsfromtheverybeginning.•

Automation

WiththefoundationofMagnetfabrikSchrambergasamanufacturerofpermanentmagnetsintheyear1963,thenucleusoftoday’sMS-Schram-

bergGmbH&Co.KG,basedinSchramberg-Sulgen,Ger-manywasestablished.

TheBlackForest-basedcompanynowsuppliescustom-ersinalltypesofindustriesallovertheworld,fromtheautomotivetothemedicalindustry,withefficientassem-bliescontainingspecialpermanentmagnets.TherearehardlyanyproductswithpermanentmagnetsonthemarketwhichhavenotbeendevelopedandmanufacturedbyMS-Schramberg.

Oneofmanyexamplesisatransducerringwithper-manentmagnetsthatarepositionedandpolarizedduringplasticinjectionmolding.

Thesetransducerringsarepartofahighlycomplexassemblyusedinthe8-gearautomatictransmissionsystemsthataremanufacturedbyZFFriedrichshafenandsubsequentlybuiltintothepremium-classmodelsoftheGermanautomobileindustry.

Thecom-pany’sdevelop-mentintoabusinesswithcontinuouslyrisingsalesfiguresandapresentwork-forceofsome450associateshasbeenmadepossiblebymanufactur-ingmethodscenteredonhighqualitystandardsandmaximumflexibility,goalswhichhavebeengiventhestatusofacorporatemaxim.MS-Schrambergsecuresthenecessaryflexibilitybymeansofwell-plannedautomationinstandardizedproductioncells,withthedesignofeverycellfollowingaverysimilar,simplifiedpat-tern.Thisenableseverycelltomanufactureawiderangeofdifferentproducts,providedtheclampingforceoftheinjectionmoldingmachineinvolvedcomplieswiththenecessaryspecifications.

SuchaproductioncellconsistsofanARBURGinjectionmoldingmachineandarobotfromWITTMANNRobotSystemeGmbHinSchwaig,plusfurtherprocessingequip-mentdevelopedandproducedbyMS-Schrambergtoitsownstandards.

Fromthebeginningofeachproject,thein-housemolddesignandmold-makingdepartmentsareindirectcontactwiththeinternalengineeringdepartmentresponsiblefortheautomationequipment.Thispracticeensuresthatthemoldsaredesignedsothatthepartsremovalgrippers(orbothinsertionandremovalgrippers)canoperatewithmaximumeffectiveness,andthematchingperipheralequipmentcanbekeptassimpleandcost-efficientaspos-sible.Anoutstandingexamplefortheresultsachievedinthiswayistheinsertionof20individualpartspershotintoa4-cavitymold.

toimprovethecoordinationofourentirepoolofmachin-ery,”saysJürgenSikora,HeadofMaterialsManagementatESCHA.“Wehavecategorizedourequipmentintothreesizesandlaidoutallmachinemodelsbelongingtoeachcategoryinasimilarway.Thisenablesustofreelycombinethemoldsandmachinesfromthesamecategorywitheachother,whichincreasestheflexibilityandutilizationrateoftheequipment.”

Originally,thecorebusinessofDOPAKconsistedofONIchillingsystemsandKraussMaffeiinjectionmoldingmachines.InordertosatisfythePolishcustomers’needsformodernautoma-tionsystems,DOPAKbeganasuccess-fulcollaborationwithWITTMANNin1996.Today,DOPAKisthemainproviderofWITTMANNrobotsandotherperipheralequipmenttoPolishinjectionmolders.Since2006,DOPAKhasbeenbasedinanewbuildinglocatedinthesoutherndistrictofthecityWrocławwitheasyaccesstoboththeairportandtheA4highway.
