This POINTER is in Memory of all Branches of service in WW II; the Navy, Army, Marines, Airmen, Seabees, Merchant Seamen, Wacs,Waves, and especially to the Special Unit of the Navy known as the U.S. NAVY ARMED GUARD which was first used as Gun Crews inWW I on board cargo, tankers and troopships and where needed to protect the ship, cargo and the merchant crews who bravely ran the shipsto each port of call until deactivated after WW I.They were established again for the same purpose in September of 1941 and remained activeuntil WW II was over and the need for gunners were not needed. This issue is also in honor to all the people all over the world who builtships, planes, tanks, trucks, jeeps, guns, ammo and all things needed to win a war against the ruthless killers. Thanks to the farmers who fedus all. Thank God for seeing us through.

Dear Crew, Nov. 15, 2009 Boy!! I sure left myself wide open with the Cap Order Form in the May/July POINTER. My intent was to say:Orders are to be made by Jan. 1, 2010, unless you came aboard after Nov. 1, 2009 , as that would be the cut-offdate so I will let you know “NOW”. I should have put–“YOU DON”T NEED TO CUT THE FORM OUTOF THE POINTER. JUST TELL WHAT YOU WANT”. It is taking too much time but I am happy somany wanted them and are on their heads across the USA. I had to re-order and it took time. If you didn’t get yourcap, advise, as the packet may have been destroyed in the mail, or; I may over looked sending. I will not re-orderanything after the Jan 1st date. When I run out of caps, I will just put the checks in the bank unless you put a noteto return. Now back to the POINTER.

I want to THANK all of you for showing your appreciation of the Cover of the May/July POINTER with the5 Sullivan Brothers. If anyone knows the where abouts of any of the family, advise and I will send them a copy.On pages 22/23 of the same POINTER, the ship name should have been S.S. HARWOOD instead of HAY-WOOD. (I didn’t catch it)

As of 11/15, 2009, I have entered No. 22,298 names into the Computer since we first bought our first AGComputer. About 1,000 are Merchant Seamen, Historians, Museums, etc. We started out with about 1,300names in 1985 that we had located from June 1982 until then.

Today, the ship’s list slots in the computer numbers 11226 but many ships are duplicated as the slots are limited to12 names. When a person sends me his ships, I enter his name under the ship’s name and when I am notified by thefamily of his death, I place an (*) asterisk behind his name. Example: Ship: S.S. MIAOULIS-Camp* L. 1945Camp*C.1945, so if your husband or dad passes, notify me so I can place the * behind his name. If you want toremain on the mailing list, please advise at that time. Please note, when I go, all of this stops as it stands now. Itwould be posted on the 4 historical ship and Armed Guard Web Site: www.armed-guard.com. I hope the latterdoes not happen anytime soon.

I have sent the Navy Memorial a check for $3,000.00 from our Armed Guard Banking account to have a plaqueplaced inside on the wall there beside others crews, to let the generations of visitors who visits there in years tocome know that we served in the Armed Guard. The money pays for the plaque expenses and helps support theMemorial and a Memorial we can be proud of. Leo Gullage, of Florida (A snowbird-from Ma.-) and I had thepriviledge to carry our signs showing U.S.N. Armed Guard WW II October 13, 1987, the day they held the ded-ication MEMORIAL CEREMONY there, a day I was proud to be there to represent you and the crew. We hadthe pleasure of meeting so many Navy Units and we sat in the middle of 701 Pennylvania Ave. before the beauti-ful Memorial was built. See centerfold.

Dear Cal,

A month ago, I called and gave yousome very good info about the ArmedGuard. It was about my first talk aboutthe Armed Guard and I was proud totalk about my old unit. And Cal, thebig old Eagle and my Liberty Shipwith the 20 MM cannon and my oldswab with his seabag seemed to get alot of attention. We had about 65 oldVeterans and their wives. When we gettogether. the “STUFF” really flys. Ijust wanted to let you know that my 3years in the Armed Guard is time I willnever forget and I was glad to tellthem.

A school teacher asked me if I wouldtalk at her school and another askedme to speak at a military museum and Idid, so I spread the word. Enclosed isthe Eagle again with my Liberty Ship,me and my Armed Guard cap you sentand some photos in the background ofmy WW II days.

Dear Cal,

On September 14, 1942, my dad and Igot on the subway to Manhatten forthe recruiting station. I had beenbothering my father since June to signfor me to join up because I was finally17 year old. He kept refusing but hefinally gave up and decided to let meenlist. The Marines wanted me but Isaid “NO” as the navy was where Iwanted to go. It was a decision that Inever regretted. After my dad signedthe papers, the Chief Petty Officerhanded us all a nickel for a ride on thesubway out to Brooklyn AGC. I hadplans for the GREAT LAKES;NEWPORT, R.I. or even California.But Brooklyn was our destination. Itwasn’t much of a ride for me because Iwas from the Bronx at the time.

My dad went with me to the AGCBrooklyn at 1 st Ave. and 52 nd St. fromthe subway and we marched together tothe gate, then he said his “Goodbyes” tome with tears in his eyes. When he left, Isaid to myself, he doesn’t have far to go tothe Bronx and I started to laugh tomyself. The Center inside was a “madhouse”, British sailors; men whose ship

had been torpedoed outside the 3 milelimit, walking around, getting more gearfrom the commissary to catch anothership out again. Then, they had us newrecruits to contend with. There musthave 5,000 guys walking all around thatHall. It was also scary seeing those guysthat had already been torpedoed justoutside of New York come in. It certain-ly was a fine way to start a navy career. Igrew up real fast that same day. I tookmy “BOOTS” right there in Brooklyn. Iwas one of the youngest guys in the com-pany. After “BOOTS”, the guys took meup to Murphy’s Bar on 4 th Ave. to havea beer. I had never drank in my life. Well,a “Donny Brook” broke out in the barand I ran for my life out of the bar. Iescaped but a lot of the men werebrought in to the Brig by the ShorePatrol. Cal, it was an experience that I’llnever forget so you can see I was learn-ing life real fast. Coming from theBronx, I loved New York but I got tolove Brooklyn as well. The people fromBrooklyn treated the Armed Guard welland they did their best to make us feel athome. Cal. I could go on with more storybut I’d better end it before I get into a“SEA STORY”. I just wanted people toknow how it was to enter service fromalmost the same town and what went on.

A NEW YEAR is here and I will soonbe 87. I sailed with the Armed Guardthrough 1945 and then on to the USSENTERPRISE. WHAT ACHANGE!!

I left the Navy for the Army inSeptember 1948. I retired with 33 yearsservice. I joined in 1937, two monthsbefore my 15th birthday. I was burnedin Oran while diving for sunken ships.

Merchant Marines receivecredit after 63 years

FELLSMERE – Nearly 30 World War IIveterans who served in the US Navy ArmedGuard and Merchant Marines finallyreceived the recognition they deserve 63years after the war.

“I think it’s the most beautiful thing the gov-ernment has done for me,” said veteranThomas Vitale, of Vero Beach, who traveledto Marsh Landing Restaurant from VeroBeach with his wife to accept a certificate ofrecognition.

Members of the two groups traveled fromall over to receive their certificates, includ-ing one from Cocoa and others from Port St.Lucie, Melbourne, West Melbourne,Barefoot Bay, Sebastian, Fellsmere, VeroBeach and numerous other towns out of thearea.

“We wouldn’t have won the war withoutyou guys,” U.S. Congressman Bill Posey

said Saturday morning, addressing a packedroom of about 70. “We wouldn’t be freetoday” if not for your service.

Rep. Posey’s office has been working for thelast year trying to get certificates made tohonor the members of the US Navy ArmedGuard and Merchant Marines in his dis-trict.

“We were sweating,” member KorkyKorker said in introduction to the congress-man, adding that they didn’t know until thelast minute that Rep. Posey would be at themonthly breakfast.

The congressman, with assistance from hisveterans affairs assistant, Chris Hill, called29 veterans up to receive their recognition.

“They’re often overlooked,” Hill said afterthe breakfast of the members of the USNavy Armed Guard and those of theMerchant Marines.

He explained that their contributions dur-ing World War II were crucial to the war

effort, keeping the American military sup-plied with necessities. The MerchantMarines – a civilian group – was often thetarget of German U-boats.

“Who knows how the war would haveturned out” if not for the members of theArmed Guard and Merchant Marines? Hillasked.

“It is truly humbling and an honor” to pres-ent the certificates, Rep. Posey said just as hestarted to announce the names of the veter-ans.

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,”he said.

GUARDING A FLOATING TARGETThey had loaded the pier on which webunked with 5 gallon cans of gasolineand set afire and he was burned severe-ly. Sabotage was suspected. When theAFRICANER was sunk, and we wereall in the life rafts, the Gunnery Officerstood up and clapped when she wentunder. Our feet and ankles froze andlarge sores followed. We saw severalmen hanging on to the ice flows.

We picked up one who was frozen stiff.We had seen the S.S. MARY LUCK-ENBACH hit by a torpedo and disin-tergrated.

Commendation C-22-347-258 to JamesErastus King, Jr. 636 25 21 GM3/Cin sinking of the S.S.AFRICANDER9/13/42

4/9/43: The Chief of Naval Personnelcommends you on your meritorious conductas a member of the Armed Guard Crew ofthe S.S. AFRICANDER which was sunkby enemy forces on September 13, 1942. Areport of the occurrence indicates that on thatdate mentioned, the convoy to which theAFRICANER was attached had beenheavily attacked by enemy submarines andaircraft. When an attack by fifty or sixty tor-pedo planes occurred at approximately 1550in the aftrenoon of the same day, the ArmedGuard Crew by their skillful anti-aircraftfire was successful in shooting down two ofthe raiders. During this attack, theAFRICANDER suffered two torpedoehits and within the space of a few minutes,began to settle at the stern. Despite the heavymachine gun fire from the planes, the abandon-ment of the ship was effected successfully andthere were no casualties either during theattack or in the evacuation. Your courage, cool-ness and outstanding performance of dutythroughout the above action were in keepingwith the highest traditions of the NavalService.

( The AFRICANDER, ex-Italian S.S.AUSSA, was taken over by the U.S.Government under an Excutive order,Public Law 101, at the Port of New Yorkon Sptember 11, 1941. She was attacked

by German aircraft about 60 miles southof Spitzbergen, while enroute from LochEwe, Scotland to Archangel, Russia witha cargo of machinery plus 6 tanks and 5planes on deck. All the names of theMerchant Crew and USN Armed Guardsurvivors are listed in Capt. Art Moore’sbook, “A CARELESS WORD-----ANEEDLESS SINKING” which list allcargo type ships sunk in WW II.)

Records show that James King wasdetached at Rosneath, Scotland for fur-ther assignment. There he was trained bythe British Commandos with survivorsof American sailors who ships had beensunk and ended up in the invasion ofNorth Africa and was detached from thecommando unit after being severelyburned while diving for sunken shipsand boarded the USS LYON on 2/23/43arriving in New York 2/23/43 and back tothe AGC Brooklyn, N.Y. 3/12/43 asGM1/c. He had participated in theassault on and seizure of Oran, Mers-el-Kebir and Arzew. He was eligible for theEuropean-African area campaign medalwith one bronze star, in accordance ofAlnav 287-1942 as stated by F.T.Spelman, Captain, U.S. NavyCommanding. James E. King states henever received his Campaign or bronzestar to this date, August 1, 2009. Hestates, “For a boy of 15 years old, I hadone helluva ride.”James E. I have made copies of the 1943 Eastercover with the sailor kneeling and theJune/Oct. 2005 cover showing theammunition ship exploding that Imade copies and gave them out to thecrew to give to friends they know. I alsogave them to my friends and familymembers and close friends at ourchurch. It is a prize winning picture.Thanks for other stories of the past and

Dear Lloyd,

Enjoy the POINTER very much. Asfar as I know, only 3 of us are left fromthe S.S. BLADENBURG tankercrew; Schrippo, Acy Lee and myself.When we got back to Panama, wecaught the S.S. JOHN THOMASand I was at the helms to the port ofMobile, Alabama. I served on theLST 1020. Four years later, I was inthe Active Reserve and was sent toKorea on the LST 1141.

I didn’t realize that at age of 76, Iwould bring an LST back into thesame seaport of Mobile--YES!! theLST 325 from Greece after locating itin 1996. After six trips to Greece, wefinally got her home on Jan. 10, 2001.This was the 3rd LST I had served on.Both LSTs were built in my home-town of Seneca, Illinois. I got out ofservice July 1952. 1943. The book is intended for bothdevotees of maritime history as well as anew generation of readers who have notbeen exposed to previous historicalaccounts. My goal is to locate a cross-section of survivors and veterans fromall pertinent places in that sea fight –Merchant Crewmen, Naval ArmedGuard personnel, officers and escortsailors, airmen on land-based patrol air-craft and U-boat crewmen – and telltheir stories. My research to date has ledme to focus on a handful of convoys thattook place on the New York/Halifax –Liverpool route during March-May1943. May 26). I am specifically lookingfor surviving crewmen who can telltheir personal experiences during thatcritical turning point in the "Battle ofthe Atlantic." If you know anyone ,please forward this to them and send metheir contact information.

JOHN BARRY which wassunk August 28, 1944 in the ArabianSea off the Coast of Saudi Arabia whileenroute from Philadelphia, Pa. to RasTanura with general cargo and 26 mil-lion dollars in silver bullion. TwoMerchant Seamen were killed. Thesurvivors were picked up by the Dutchtanker, S.S. SUNETTA who carriedtheir survivors to Aden and the S.S.BENJAMIN BOURN who carriedtheirs to Khorramshar, Iran. TheGerman sub was sunk in the Straits ofMalacca by the British submarine HMSTRENCHANT on 9/23/44. TheBARRY is listed as a “TREASURESHIP of the TWENTIETH CENTU-RY” by author Michael Pickford.

I understand that some of the crew werecontacted and given a coin. My husbandwho wrote the report for the NavyCaptain was not interviewed. It is a long

story. I have not been able to locate anyof his shipmates. The SALVAGESTORY is facsinating. Thank you sin-cerely for what you have done to pepetu-ate the memory and history of the USNArmed Guard in WW II. Donationenclosed.

Everything is going fine. The story aboutthe poor Russian from a POW camp ispretty sad. You know, during the lastconference between Roosevelt, Churchilland Stalin in Yalta they agreed that all ofthe Russian captives as well as refugeesfrom Soviet Russia would be returned tothe Soviet Union. It may sound awful,but Stalin called everybody who was cap-tured a deserter. Well, and another thing- here in Murmansk some of the refugeesand POW's (especially those who foughtagainst the communists and escaped afterthe Soviets won) were shot right after theydisembarked. It still remains one of thedarkest pages in Murmansk's history.They don't like to talk about it in Russia,you know, and they would rather let thestory pass away.

USNAG WWI AND WWII1943. This ship had mainly aNorwegian crew but also had 14 U.S.Naval Armed Guard on board. 2 ofwhom were killed, unfortunately nonames were given of these two men.Ensign Shotwell was in charge of theNaval Armed Guard. The ship was onpassage Basra and Table Bay for Bahia,Trinidad and Philadelphia, and wastorpedoed about 300 miles south ofWalvis Bay (South West Africa) theposition being 27.35S 14.22E. Thecargo was chrome ore, asbestos, lead,and copper concentrates. Crew 33, 1USA 1 Belgian, 1 Danish, 4 British and26 Norwegian. 7 casualties includingthe Master and 2 Gunners. The shipbroke in half and went down in threeminutes. One of the lifeboats was bro-ken by the first torpedo which struckstarboard side amidships followed by asecond torpedo about half a minutelater just forward of the bridge. Threelifeboat got into the water, but one cap-sized. Most of the crew jumped intothe water and were picked up by thetwo remaining boats. The boats set sailfor the coast 50 miles away and landedon a small island the next day, fromthere they went to another island. Fromhere they went to Luderitz Bay inSouth West Africa. According to theAdmiralty War Diary 38 survivorsarrived at Luderitz Bay.

Here wehave our Merchant NavyRemembrance day on 3rd September,and go out to sea on a small pleasurecruiser and lay a wreath on the seabefore returning to harbour and havinga social evening. 3rd September 1939was the first day of WWII and also thefirst casualties in the Merchant Navy.We also have a service onRemembrance Sunday in Novemberwhen we attend an all service for thoselost in WWII from the Chapel wemarch down to the harbour and then

have another short service at thelifeboat house on the edge of the sea,and at 1100 hours prompt a maroon isfired to mark the start of the 2 minutesilence, followed then by anothermaroon to mark the end of the silence.Then we proceed to the rowing clubopposite the lifeboat house where weand the Royal Navy get together for asocial get together for two or threehours. The Greek Merchant seaman are vis-iting the vessel on a daily basis admir-ing the efforts for the restoration andare excited with the results. We mustremember that after WW2, theGreeks acquired over 600 of the 950Liberty Ships that were used as mer-chant vessels, and sailed on them forover 30 years. When the Arthur M.Huddell arrived in Piraeus onJanuary 11,2009, many of the GreekLiberty ship seamen greeted the ves-sel with tears in their eyes, recallingtheir sailing days. Dear Cal,

Enjoyed the copy of the POINTER. Ihad not read many pages when I ranacross the article about the S.S.TONTO at Saipan. I was Messman at17 years old on the Ethopian Victoryand we had just unloaded the majorityof our load at Anguar in the PalauGroup consisting of bombs for the B-24group to bomb the Phillipines. We stillhad a large tonnage of incindiarieswhich we took to Saipan. We arrivedjust before Christmas 1944. We wereallowed ashore and I went up to the air-base where we saw B-29s which we didnot know even existed. We met some ofthe Air Force personnel and we toldthem what we had brought them. Theyassured us that they would deliver themto Japan for us.

We left Saipan and returned to theStates and I caught another ship, theS.S. BUCKNELL VICTORY andloaded at Port Chicago, Ca. and head-ed back to the Pacific war zone. Wejoined a Convoy to Ulithi and tookammo to Okinawa where I celebratedmy 18th birthday. We were unloadingwhen the battleship USS NEW MEX-ICO was hit by a Kamakazi on May13th in the number one hold killing areported, at the time, eigtht gunners.While unloading, I met some of the

Marines and in talking to them, Ifound out that there was a Marine frommy hometown. The next day, he visitedme. I did not see another buddy as hewas doing picket duty duty and theywere hit. He was seriously woundedbut lived to be 77 years of age. Wereturned to Frisco in June and I caughtthe S.S. CAPE FLORIDA to theSouth Pacific and the Phillipines withmedical supplies. I returned to theStates, joined the Army, winding up inJapan in the 11th Airborne.

My reason for joining the MerchantMarines was that I had an older broth-er, Robert E. Shackelford who was tor-pedoed near Bermuda on June 28, 1942and survived 21 days on a liferaft. Hehad attended King’s Point from theCCCs in 1941. We didn’t know what theMM was or did. His ship sailed fromNew York on Dec. 1, 1941 and we didn’tknow he had sailed and we had no ideathe name of the ship. They sailed toIndia and returned toward the Statesand the ship was torpedoed somewherenear Bermuda June 28, 1942 and wedidn’t know until he got home. Thanks.Sincerely,

ENROLL FOR MERCHANT MARINENearly 11,000 young men volunteered for service in the merchant marine in September, according

to figures from the Shipping Board recruiting station.All are inexperienced in seagoing and eligible

for training as apprentices before going into merchant crews.This enrollment was more than 2 and

one-half times the capacity of the board’s 12 training Ships, which can take on 4,000 men a month.

Spanish influenza retarded training for the month, but the board announces that its training ships

are now free of the disease and that the present waiting list of volunteers will be reduced material-

ly in October. The merchant marine is the only national maritime service in which inexperienced

men may now volunteer.

It’s been many moons since I wrote toyou. I want to THANK YOU for theFeb/April 2009 POINTER Edition Ireceived, and all the other Editions inthe past. It brought back many memo-ries since I was attached to theBrooklyn, N.Y. Armed Guard Center1ST Ave-52ND Street from 1942-1945as Ship’s Company in the SupplyDepartment. There are many names Irecognized in the listing of the FirstAnniversary Banquet. At the CapitalHotel in NYC on 9/17/43. All the ros-ter of officers on Christmas 1942 arefamiliar as well.

My memory brings me back to the dayswhen the Armed Guard crews reportedback to the Center for rest and transferback to another ship. Also, the sur-vivors of sunken ships who came backall covered with thick, black oil allover, nothing on but their skivvies andglad to be alive from being torpedoedby a German U-Boat.

They had to be cleaned up, fed, issuednew clothing, bedded down and readyto be shipped out again. After a fewdays of rest. This is where the Ship’sCompany, including Supply andDisbursing Departments helped tosquare them away. I learned a lot fromthe letters that I read from the ArmedGuard survivors. Some of the storiesthey told were unbelievable of whatthey had to endure. Thanks Cal foryour inspiration and contribution to theArmed Guard through the POINTER.BRAVO ZULU. Sincerely,

When the Jap planes wrought havoc onthe Cavite Naval Base on December 10,1941 Commander Erickson had justbeen reassigned from Mare Island andwas the Senior Medical Officer at theCavite Navy Yard dispensary. Facilitieswere so severly damaged that 600patients, 250 hospital corpsmen and 50medical officers along with Erickson,were moved into Manila to the largeSanta Scholastica girls school. As theenemy approached the city, all Armyand Navy personnel were evacuated,leaving only two medical men at themake-shift hospital to meet the Japswhen they entered Manila January2nd. The Japs posted guards, system-atically confiscated all medical sup-plies and equipment, and, declaringSanta Scholastica was “too” good forthe Americans and ordered that they bemoved to a small, run-down elemen-tary school in the Pasay district of thecity.

This was gradually done during thenext two months. There, they remaineduntil the end of May, and then wereagain moved, to the famous oldBilibid prison, built by the earlySpaniards, used by our forces duringthe Spanish-American War and laterby the Philippine gavernment. Herethe Americans stayed for sixteenmonths, the doctors working heroical-ly under the callous regime of thegloating, impatient enemy. Dysentery,

malaria and the diseases of malnutri-tion took a heavy toll. The doctorswere in a constant struggle with theircaptors to get even the starvationrations and the trickle of medical sup-plies they were allowed and to keep illmen hospitalized as long as possibleagainst the insistance of the Japs thatmen who could barely walk be put towork building airstrips. At length, theJapanese decided the doctors were“resisting the will of the ImperialArmy” and the doctors and patientswere broken up into two groups to besent to prison camps. One group,including Commander Erickson wastaken to the terrible Cabantuan prisoncamp ninety miles, northwest ofManila. In the fourteen months, thedoctor existed in this hell, 6,000 mendied from illness, exhaustion and Japmurder. They were fed a diet of smallquanities of rice and grass, with tinybits of steer heads and hooves once aweek. Crawling with filth and disease,the internees were forced to work gru-elling hours on the prison farm andbuilding defenses. For the slightestinfraction of the minutely, eloboraterules, hundreds of prisoners were beat-en to death with two-by-fours, shot,beheaded and tortured.

Eating an onion on the farm meant exe-cution. The captors managed to aug-ment their food by trapping and eatingsnakes, rats, cats and iguanas that cameinto the camp. The doctor, weak and illwith beri-beri and dysentery, wasspared the manual labor. Beingallowed to do that, it allowed him to do

what he could for his fellow-prisonersas a doctor. And then, on the morningof January 7th, 1945, the remnants ofthe internees were suddenly told theywere no longer prisoners of war. Thatafternoon, the guards departed, leav-ing a month’s supply of rice. The nextmorning, there were no Japs aroundand the Americans immediately raidedthe Jap side of the camp, seizing largesupplies of flour, rice and many steers.From then on, they were left largely tothemselves. The Japanese turned theplace into a sort of rest camp forexhausted troops from the front, and theformer prisoners were not molested.

On the 9th of January, the Americans heardthe shelling at Lingayen Gulf, sixty milesaway, and jubilantly knew something washappening. On January 30th, at seven-thir-ty in the evening, the American troops of the6th Rangers and Filipino guerrillasswooped down on the camp, killed everyguard, and in twenty minutes were convoying511 rescued men through the twenty-fivemiles of enemy territory on an all-night to theAmerican lines. Only two of the doctors whowere at the Cavite hospital when the Japscame had survived. Commander Ericksonis the only survivor from the Cavite NavyYard Dispensary. Finally, he was free to gohome to his wife and two children in LosAngeles, California from whom he hadreceived only eleven letters in three years andthe latest one was two years old. On March17, 1945, Commander H.A. Erickson wason a ship, headed home from three nightmar-ish years of starvation, and barbaric acts ofthe troops of war at the hands of the JapImperial Army –calloyd

the bottom of the hold contained fifty-gallon drums of aviation gasoline. Wealso discovered that number five holdcontained rounds of 155mm artilleryammunition. Flames shot hundreds offeet into air above the ship's super-structure. Ocean waters blazed asignited gasoline floated outward fromthe Ladd.

A non-swimmer, I climbed into theonly undamaged lifeboat with theship's crew. At its bottom lay a piece ofthe Zero's airplane wing, part of a redcircle visible. Other soldiers released

life rafts forward and jumped intowaters not yet aflame. As we rowedaway, the stern of the Ladd skyrocket-ed fiery balls into air in a Fourth-of-July display lasting into the night.Shells exploded and sped upward likeRoman Candles. Last seen, the Ladd'sbow rode high at anchor and the sternrested on the ocean's shallow bottom.

I believe that the merchant marinesailors received ship sunk bonuses inaddition to the usual hazardous-zonebonus and signed aboard other vesselsreturning home. Navy gunners hurried

to the States for 3D-day shore leavesand an extra clothing allowance grant-ed navymen off sunken ships. Acolonel bawled me out for being on thebeach out of uniform and unarmed. Ihad no shoes, wore a borrowed bluenavy shirt and had neglected to crawldown into the hold to rescue my rifle.

A b o a r d t h e WILLIAM S. LADD

One of the last of the PacificNorthwest ships to fall victim toenemy action was the Portland-builtLiberty ship William S. Ladd, operat-ed for the War ShippingAdministration by the WeyerhaeuserSteamship Co. Bombs from a Japaneseplane set the freighter on fire in LeyteGulf, where she later foundered.

There was no loss of life, although sixmerchant seamen of her crew were hos-pitalized. Although most of her cargohad already been unloaded, a quantityof gasoline and ammunition remainedin her holds at the time of the attack. The Ladd was commanded by Capt.Nels F. Anderson of Silverdale,Washington, who was a former mateon the C. S. Holmes under Capt.Backland and later master of thebarkentines Forest Friend and ForestPride. (Gordon Newell, MaritimeEvents of 1945, H.W.McCurdy,Marine History of the PacificNorthwest.,p. 528).

I was a soldier on the Ladd, workingwith the unloading detail at the time itwas sunk. I always wondered for whomthe ship was named. The above accountis mostly accurate, but the ship wasanchored off Leyte when a JapaneseZero dove into the number four holdwith a bomb attached and set 55-gallondrums of aviation gasoline afire. Thestern of the ship sank to the shallow seafloor while the bow remained at anchorabove water.

I was a PFC in Antitank Company,152nd Infantry Regiment, 38th(Cyclone) Infantry Division. We hadbeen in New Guinea since June and leftin October, 1944, for the Philippines.My account of the William S. Ladd'slast voyage is as follows:

From somewhere near Buna in New

Guinea eleven hundred of us sailedaboard the William S. Ladd, a Libertyship not designed to receive passen-gers. Temporary, wooden box-likecontraptions fastened to the rail servedas our latrines. My company slept ondecking in number one hold near theanchor. We had cots but they remainedstacked in one corner. If set up, not allof our bodies could be accommodated.Seeing soldiers packed together likesardines, I decided to sleep on the widemakeshift stairs leading into the hold. Minutes after midnight the shipdropped anchor in a northern NewGuinea harbor to form up with a con-voy. The sudden rattle of the chainstartled us into thinking that a torpedohad hit the ship. The entire hold emp-tied by running over my prone bodystretched out on the stairs. After that Islept topside on deck, rain or not.

Most of the voyage was uneventful,except for one day of extremely highwaves that at times completely hidfrom view our accompanying destroy-ers.

Lined up for breakfast on deck a dayoff the Philippine Islands, the troopswere startled by a lone Japanese air-plane. It dove from clouds anddropped a bomb near the freighterlocated at coffin corner, the most dan-gerous spot in any convoy.

That near miss commenced a day ofdive bombings and torpedo attacks byairplanes. From morning until dusk,enemy airplanes swept over the convoylike clockwork, three at a time. Neverdid gunners shoot down all three.Most times not even one airplaneplunged into ocean waves. I don'tknow what was worse, the air attacks orthe spent shell fragments droppingfrom the sky as multiple guns on theforty ships in the convoy and the Navyescort vessels opened fire.

Two torpedoes traveling side by sidepenetrated the entire convoy without

striking a single ship. Mesmerized andshaking in my boots, I watched thepaired tubes approach just below thesurface. War movies showing torpe-does zipping along are quite accuratein that respect. Both barely missed thebow of a ship to our left and passedbehind the stern of our ship by lessthan six feet. They crossed bare yardsin front of the Liberty ship to ourright.

Airplanes badly damaged several shipsthat day. I saw one ship sink and Inoticed several burning on the horizonas we pulled away from them. Anotherone carrying soldiers from our divisionlimped to anchorage. A suicide, orkamikaze, airplane had plunged intoan ammunition locker under its four-inch forward gun and concussionkilled more than 300 men, wiping outan entire company of medics. I heardthat they had been ordered into thehold to avoid the dropping shell frag-ments. The disabled vessel, lacking ananchor, tied alongside our ship whenwe anchored two or three miles off thecoast of Leyte. Both ships kept theirengines fired up for hasty departures incase of air raids.

I made the mistake of moseying over tocheck the damage. Never will I forgetthe sight of all those. bloated bodiesfloating in a hold flooded to combat aflaming holocaust. On deck oneburned corpse actually fused into andbecame part of a winch's cable drum. Hours after my platoon landed ashoreI became part of a detail that returnedto the Ladd to finish unloading opera-tions. Near dusk a Japanese Zero sud-denly turned and dove straight forwhat looked like the exact spot where Istood near the bow. An attached bombshowed clearly visible. I remainedrooted to the deck as the Zero loomedlarger and flew into number four holdat the rear.

Until we had removed most of thecargo we soldiers were unaware that

In last issue of the Pointer Magazine (May/July 2009) on thebottom of page 8, someone wrote about Anne Marsh and theInstitute on WWII and Human Experience. I received severalphone calls from Armed Guard veterans who served their coun-try during WWII. Thank you very much for phoning. I wouldlike to take a moment to tell you a little bit about me, as well theInstitute on WWII and Human Experience.

In 2005, my dream job of working full time for the Institute onWWII came true. I am an Archivist and in charge of theInstitute’s webpage and all its computer support. I also run theResearch room assisting students and researchers in finding col-lections pertaining to their topics of interest. I supervise scan-ning of collections as well as other preservation tasks. Also, Ioccasionally travel, giving presentations to groups such as FSUEmeritus groups, church groups, school classes, WW II veter-an’s reunions, etc. My dad served in the Marines in the Pacific soworking for the Institute is my way of honoring him and allWorld War II veterans.

In 1997, the Institute on WWII and the Human Experience wasestablished. Two people contacted Dr. Oldson, Director of theInstitute within about six months wanting to have their WWIImemorabilia preserved for future generations. They did notwant their memorabilia thrown out. One of Dr. Oldson's areasis the Holocaust, so he immediately said yes, realizing the needfor a depository for WWII memorabilia. Since 1997, we havereceived over 7,000 collections from individuals. They rangefrom letters, diaries, photographs, newsletters, artifacts,artwork, books, memoirs, maps. We collect anything relatingto WWII (except we're overstocked on uniforms).

Being that we are part of Florida State University and in theHistory department we have many students coming in to do

research, reading about the everyday men and women whoserved their country during WWII, whether it was on theHome Front or overseas. The students are reading and learningabout it in a way that they will never get from a textbook. Thememorabilia makes it come alive for them. It is not just collegestudents coming for research; we have had sixth graders doingHistory Fair projects. The film producers for the HistoryChannel used our collections extensively for the documentaryseries The Color of War, and other outside researchers, haveused our collections.

If you have your WWII memorabilia, or have written yourexperiences down, don't let them be thrown away. I know thatwe do not have much on the men who served in the ArmedGuard. Help us to expand our collections on the service andexperiences of the Armed Guard during WWII. If you partici-pated in the Murmansk Run, I have a student doing a Honorthesis about that, this semester.

TRAGEDY AT BARI, ITALYNaval Armed Guard Service

during WWII: Tragedy at Bari ,Italy, 2 December 1943.

One of the most disastrous bombingattack against allied ships during theentire war took place at Bari, Italy, onDecember 2, 1943. This port was in theBritish theater of operations, but sev-eral American [merchant] ships with[U.S. Navy] Armed Guard aboard wereat Bari on that fateful day [when aGerman air raid occurred]. When thelast bomb had fallen, and the last shipexploded, and the large fires had runtheir course, 17 ships had been sunkand six damaged. There were fiveUnited States ships sunk and one dam-aged. One other United States shipcame through unscathed.

The Joseph Wheeler had her starboardside blown out and was on her port sidewhen her Armed Guard officer, whohad been ashore arranging for the payof his men, last saw her. The onlyArmed Guard survivors were the offi-cer and twelve men who were taking awell-earned liberty in the town. Therewere 15 Armed Guard dead or missingand 26 of the merchant crew missing.

The Samuel J. Tilden was bombed andthen sunk by two British torpedoes toprevent danger to other ships. A bombcrashed through to the engine room atabout 1920 and an incendiary bomb hitforward of the bridge. The Germanpilot, of the attacking aircraft, strafedthe deck with machine gun fire. Anti-aircraft fire from ashore also hit theship. A searchlight was [shined] on theship for seven minutes after the attackbegan, apparently because somebodyashore forgot to turn it off. All of theArmed Guard survived but the deadand missing among the merchant crewnumbered 10 and there were also casu-alties to Army personnel [who were onboard].All of the Armed Guard werelost with the John Harvey [which wascarrying mustard gas]. Most of themerchant crewmen were also missing.

Apparently the only people who sur-vived were those who were ashore.

The John L. Motley had grim luck onher trip to the Mediterranean. OnAugust 8, calcium carbine had causedan explosion and fire [on board]. Thencame her end at Bari. There were onlyfive survivors from her Armed Guard,and 30 of the merchant crew were miss-ing or dead. Four of her survivors wereashore. It was reported that threebombs hit the ship. The Lyman Abbottwas more fortunate, for she escapedwith only moderate damage. Herreport indicates that the harbor wascrowded with some 30 ships plus oneship outside and that the harbor soonbecame an inferno of flames and smokeaccompanied by violent explosions ofthe burning ships. The master ordered"abandon ship" at 2015 when severalburning ships drifted close, but shewas re-boarded [when the dangerpassed]. Her only damage from bombswas to her rudder, but the explosionsadded to her damage. One ArmedGuard was killed and the Army CargoSecurity Officer also died. Nearly allof the Armed Guards suffered burnsand some of them were hit by frag-ments. All in all, it was a grim night forthe Abbott, but she was able to leave onJanuary 10 [1944].

The Louis Hennepin was the only shipcarrying Armed Guard which escapedwithout material damage. But twobombs landed about 100 yards fromthe ship and two Armed Guard werewounded. Her Armed Guard officerreported that lights along the dockstayed on for 13 minutes after the firstbomb dropped, and he declared thatport facilities were inadequate and thatthere was a lack of coordination. Thisship fired some 6,000 rounds of 20mmammunition during the attack. She alsofired on December 11.

The John Bascom was hit by threebombs at 1945. This fine ship wasapparently the first in the harbor to

open fire on the attacking German air-craft. An explosion on the John L.Motley caused the whole port side ofthe Bascom to cave in. The ship did nothave a chance to survive. From thisawful carnage emerged one of the finestheroes of the Armed Guard Service.Ensign Kay K. Vesole won the NavyCross and later had a Navy ship namedfor him. But he lost his life in heroicservice to his crew. Wounded in theshoulder and over the heart, he stillwent from gun to gun directing actionand rendering aid to the wounded anddying. Weak from the loss of blood, heconducted a party of his men belowdecks and supervised the carrying ofwounded to the boat deck. When theship was in a burning and sinking con-dition he supervised the loading of theonly lifeboat not destroyed. His crewhad to force him into the lifeboat. Hewanted to swim to make room for menwith worse wounds than his. He insist-ed on rowing with his uninjured arm ashe helped disembark the wounded. Hehelped carry wounded to the bombshelter and had to be restrained fromgoing back into the flames to rescueother wounded when an ammunitionship blew up. He dispatched a signal-man to the end of the jetty to signal forhelp. He refused to embark in the firstboat sent to rescue the Bascom sur-vivors but was forced into the second.He appears to have sacrificed everychance to recover in his efforts to saveothers. He was in every sense one of thefinest heroes of World War II and typ-ified the finest in the traditions of theNavy and the Armed Guard Service.From this destruction of his ship nineof his Armed Guard perished withhim. Nine men from that crew wereawarded Bronze Star Medals.

Bari was one of those sudden blowswhich did great damage but did notlong delay the victorious march of theallies in Italy. The blow was too suddenfor Armed Guard to do much to defendtheir ships. It well illustrates the dan-ger which was always just around the

After sailing for nine days in a snow stormwe arrived in Iceland, at the port ofReykjavik. The arrival date wasNovember 26, 1942. At this port we didnot see any of the ships we left Russiawith nor to this day do we know if theymade it back or not. We left Iceland onNovember 28, 1942 for Scotland to pickup supplies to get us back to New York.We arrived in Scotland on November 30,1942. We stayed in Scotland tillDecember 15, 1942. Then we left for NewYork and arrived in New York onDecember 24, 1942. There was so muchthat happened during this eight day battlethat I haven’t mentioned.

The S. S. William Moultrie received theGallant Ship award during the war for theRussian run that I was involved in. TheMoultrie also received congratulationsfrom the Port Commander and the PrimeMinister of Great Britain. Each memberof the crew received a months pay as abonus from the Russian Government.Also each member received a Letter ofCommendation from the U. S. Chief of

Naval Personal which stated, “For con-spicuous courage, tenacity and fightingspirit during a running battle againstenemy German forces”. The Silver Starwas awarded to the Gunnery Officer forhis leadership during this conflict. Eachgun crew member was awarded a CitationRibbon Bar from the U. S. Navy Directorof Medals. On December 8, 1992 at theRussian Embassy in Washington D. C.each member of the gun crew received aCommemorative medal and ribbon fromthe Russian Government along with a let-ter from President Boris Yeltsin and theentire Russian people for our courage andpersonal contribution to the Allied sup-port of his country during WWII.

I wrote this poem while in a hospital inScotland about a shipmate who won-dered if any one really cared if he lost hislife. It reads like this;

WHO CARES ?

In this gun tub I sit waste deep in snow,Which once was white ˆ but now is red,

With a shipmate’s body that I now hold,Once filled with life ˆ but now is dead.While he lay in this snowy bed, I felt he real-ized he soon would be dead, Because hemotioned me closer to his head, So I mighthear the last two words he said –WHOCARES?

Later when they laid him at my feet,And I covered his body with a sheet,And when we slipped him off into the deep,His burning words in my ears seemed torepeat–WHO CARES?

As I stood and watched his body disappear,This shipmate that I held in my arms so dear,The sacrifice he made will remain foreverclear, He had given his life, yet he wanted tohear–WHO CARES?

Now after all these years, I look back to thatday, And since that occasion, now when Ipray, I thank God, who allowed him thosefew seconds to stay, In my arms, so he couldhear me say–WHO CARES?

MURMANSK RUN

With the war over in Europe, the need for men and women tocontinue to do the jobs in ship building and ship repair wasgrowing by leaps and bounds and wages were good. Many hadlost their jobs in Detroit and elsewhere due to supply anddemand for more bombers were not needed yet the the unem-ployed refuse to leave to go to the West Coast to work where thedemand for their labor was great. The Pacific had become anamphibious war to some extent.

The magnitude of fighting an amphibious war such as“Squadron 10” was one of the WW II most guarded secrets andsuccessful “secret weapons.’ “Squadron 10” was a floating sup-ply base composed of hundreds of vessels including oil tankers,floating dry docks, repair ships, tenders, freighters, barges, bar-racks, canteens and everything needed to maintain a huge fight-ing force thousands of miles from home. To “Squadron 10” andother bases in the Pacific, a constant stream of Merchant Shipscarried the vast resources of supplies needed in warfare. Theneed for a large amount of supplies and fuel used by Squadron10 in just strikes against Iwo Jima and Tokyo alone showed the5th alone consumed enough fuel to fill a train of tank cars 238miles long-an approximately 200 millions gallons. All of thishad to be moved over 8,000 to where needed. Enough food was

stored aboard the ships to feed the city of Columbus, Ohio atthe time for a month; 52 million pounds of food. Four hundredeighty-eight freight cars loads of ammunition was supplied.Enough gasoline was burned by the fleet and planes to run30,700 American cars for a full year. Into the operation, 9 mil-lion gallons of drinking water, 270,000 pounds of soap, 5 mil-lion packages of cigarettes, 300 tons of candy and other canteensupplies.

It took two years to build up 20,000,000 tons of supplies inEngland just for the Normandy invasion. What it cost for all ofWW II is unknown exactly but there is one thing for sure, theLiberty Ships,Tankers and other cargo type ships and crews didtheir job and did it well. The people of the world owes a lot tothe Merchant Seamen of WW II and the USN Armed GuardGun Crews then and to the merchant crews that sailed the seassince WW II and are still doing what their country ask.

The above is just a drop in the bucket for what the ship and crew deliveredaround the world then and are still delivering. They keep the food chainopen and everything we sell overseas and things we purchase from them inexchange. This is the CHAIN REACTION there keeps world tradeamong nations working. Say a prayer that it continues.

submarines. Over a period of 8 days wenever left our gun stations. Our foodwas brought to us.

The S. S. William Moultrie’s location inthe convoy was the last ship of the thirdrow from the starboard side. The star-board side was always the side theattacks were made on. The first full dayof attacks by the Germans wiped out thetwo rows of ships on the starboard sideand all the ships of the third line down tothe S. S. William Moultrie’s position.

The S. S. William Moultrie was the onlyship left in that line. There were openspots inside the convoy of lost shipsalso. The captain had requested permis-sion to move within the convoy, but hewas ordered to hold his position. Wewere left out there alone. As it turnedout, we had seven more days of fighting.Our position was such that we would bethe first ship they would meet whenattacking from that side.

We were subjected to almost constantbombing, submarine, and aerial torpedoattacks from an extraordinary number ofenemy units. On September 13, 1942, theS. S. William Moultrie gun crews metnine torpedo planes with a tremendousbarrage of withering fire. Three planeswere completely destroyed and directhits were scored upon six other planes.The gunners not only revealed the exactlocation of a periscope, but with accurateand skillful volleys of gun fire, forcedthe periscope to submerge. The crewalso opened fire on a torpedo chargingthrough the water, exploding it somedistance from the ship. There were sev-eral other incidents that happened dur-ing the eight day battle that I haven’tcovered at this time.

The S. S. William Moultrie and its sis-ter ships, a total we counted of 13, madeit through the blockade. That workedout to be 13 of 38 ships that leftScotland. We arrived at Murmansk inNorth Russia on the morning ofSeptember 20, 1942. This was Russia‚s

last stand. PQ-18 was the largest convoyto get through the blockade and reachMurmansk. The port could not handleall the ships. A select group of ships withvital supplies of tanks, locomotives, etc.,that were badly needed at the front, werepulled out and ordered to proceed to theport of Archangle. The William Moultriewas one of the ships selected to proceed toArchangle. The port of Archangle was atthe southern end of the White Sea and atthe mouth of the Dunia River. In additionto the aerial attack, the Germans now wereable to come at us with torpedo boats. Asyou may recall, the hulls of the torpedoboats that the Germans had were builtwith plywood. To help protect us fromthe German torpedo boats, the Russianscut and floated large trees in the river.They also had large timbers floating in theWhite Sea. We arrived at the mouth of theDunia River on the night of September22, 1942.At the docks in Archangle we were underconstant aerial attacks, both day and night.One ship was hit and sunk in the mouth ofthe river. The water was not deep enoughto allow it to go completely under thewater. The Russians later unloaded theequipment where it went down.

We were under orders while in port not tofire our guns during the air raids. Theywanted the shore batteries to be used forour protection. What they didn’t knowwas we had used up all of our anti-aircraftammunition. If we were to fire at any air-craft it would have to be with armor pierc-ing projectiles.

The German radio broadcast, their equiv-alent to Japan‚s “Tokyo Rose”, comple-mented the ships of PQ-18 for reachingtheir destination, but wanted to remindthe convoy that they had to come backthrough the blockade on there return tothe United States. After unloading oursupplies for the Russian front, the shipsremained in Archangel, awaiting orders.

The plan, as directed by the Russian portcommander, was for all the ships to awaitthe winter snow storms. The plan was to

ride with these storms back through theblockade, using them as protectionagainst German air attacks. The Russianshad ice breakers ready to lead us out of theWhite Sea.

The weather at times would reach 58degrees below zero, but would be clearwith almost no wind at all. The gun crewsplayed softball for entertainment on dayslike this. The Russians thought that wewere crazy.

On November 17, 1942, a tremendoussnow storm moved in on us. TheRussians gave us the word that this wasthe storm that covered all of the north andwould be there for some time. If we weregoing to get out before the next spring, itwould have to be now, or we would besnowed in. The ships were ordered toleave port. With the help of the Russianice breakers we left the mouth of the riverand into the White Sea that day. Thesnow was so thick and the clouds were solow, that we could not see the other shipsthat left with us. We were ordered not tous out radio for communication for fearthe Germans would pick it up and knowwe were out there. As it turned out, thestorm was so big that it covered the NorthAtlantic and Barents Sea. We had noknowledge where our sister ships wereafter we left Archangle. We traveled theNorth Atlantic blindly for eight days.During this time our guns had becomefrozen and unable to be used. When theweather began to rise and we could seeparts of the blue sky, we took blow torch-es and heated the guns so they could beused if needed.

As the weather cleared and we could seethe horizon, we also spotted a war shipoff our stern. Through the use of blink-ers, and the proper code, we found outthat it was British. They instructed us tohold what we had because we were in themiddle of a mine field off the coast ofIceland. They said they would come inand bring us out. They could see we wereshot up pretty bad and offered to escort usinto Iceland.

corner for all Armed Guard crews. Menwho go through such actions have to behighly disciplined and trained, and tohave superb courage.

Among the ships sunk when GermanJU-88 bombers attacked the port of Barion the night of 2 December 1943 wasJohn Harvey, which was carrying mus-tard gas intended for use in retaliation bythe Allies if German forces initiated gaswarfare. Most of the released gas wascarried out to sea by an offshore breeze,but many military and civilian personnelwere temporarily incapacitated or killedby undetermined amounts of the gaswhich were held in solution in oil thatwas floating on the water. Of the more

than 800 casualties hospitalized after theraid, 628 suffered from mustard gasexposure. Sixty-nine deaths were attrib-uted in whole or in part to this cause.

Medical officers and aidmen treatingthe casualties were unaware of the pres-ence of the gas, which was diluted suf-ficiently to be detected by odor. In thebelief that casualties covered with oilbut showing no physical damage weresuffering from exposure and immer-sion, they were wrapped in blankets,still in their oil-soaked clothing, givenhot tea, and left as they were for twelveto twenty-four hours while the moreurgent blast injuries and surgical caseswere treated.

Those with the energy and will to cleanthe oil from their own bodies suffered noserious damage, but the remainder suf-fered varying degrees of mustard burns.Eyes began to burn about 6 hours afterexposure, and were so badly swollen in24 hours that many of the patientsthought themselves blind. The firstdeaths occurred without warning 18hours after exposure. About 90 percentof the gas casualties were American, thebulk of them merchant seamen. Since noU.S. hospital facilities were yet availablein Bari - equipment for all but one ofthe U.S. hospitals scheduled for thearea were destroyed in the bombing -casualties were hospitalized in Britishinstallations.

I was shipped to thenavy base in New Orleans, Louisiana.New Orleans was to become my homeport to ship out of and report back tofor a new assignment. I arrived at theNew Orleans navy base early in 1942. Iwas assigned to a new supply ship asone of its gunners. The name of thisnew ship was the S. S. WilliamMoultrie. It was on this ship that Imade the first trip to Murmansk,Russia in 1942. The voyage was alsoknown as the Murmansk Run or theRussian Run.

I boarded the S. S. William Moultrie inWilmington, North Carolina on June8, 1942. After sailing to New York forour cargo of tanks, locomotives, dyna-mite, etc., we set sail for Halifax, NovaScotia. We left Nova Scotia the follow-ing day after arriving. Our next stopwas to be Scotland for the final forma-tion of supply convoy PQ-18.

PQ-18 had no offi-cial count of the losses PQ-17 had suf-fered, but word got back to us that ofthe 44 ships in PQ-17, only 4 remainedafloat. The great loss of ships and menin that convoy caused WinstonChurchill to stop the departure of con-voy PQ-18. Both of these two convoyswere under the command of the Britishfleet.

Joseph Stalin put great pressure onChurchill for more help. The Russianarmy was being pushed back up to theNorth Sea and Stalin was about to losethe northern part of his country.Stalin‚s northern army was cut off fromits supplies. Churchill reissued ordersfor PQ-18 to “move on its planned mis-sion”. PQ-18 and the S. S. WilliamMoultrie began its trip to Russia onAugust 28, 1942.

Our escort, like PQ-17 was to beBritish ships. They had several heavycruisers, destroyers, destroyer escortsand mine sweepers within the convoy.The British Navy’s plan was to use thislarge supply convoy to bring theGerman battleship “Terpits” out to sea.Their plans were to cut the battleshipoff from its base in Norway and force itinto a naval sea battle. They had triedthis maneuver with PQ-17. When the“Terpits” came

after PQ-17, The British war ships leftthe convoy and tried to cut her off fromher base. It was then that the Germanshit PQ-17 with air power and in twodays the convoy was lost. On the sec-ond day of air strikes, with no protec-tion, the convoy split and they becamesitting ducks for the Germans. A totalof 40 supply ships and men, lost!

PQ-18 expected the British to do thesame when the “Terpits” came out afterthem. However, the ships of PQ-18were better armed than PQ-17 and wereunder strict orders to not split and run,

but to hold there position under allcost.

The early morning attack was withwaves of high altitude Heinkel 111Kbombers, one after another and thislasted several hours. Later in the day,the attacks were switched to severalflights of low flying torpedo planes.They made their attacks from the star-board side of the convoy. They flewlow and just above the water, droppedtheir torpedoes and then flew lowbetween the ships in hopes of not draw-ing fire because of the crossfire amongthe ships. This proved them wrongbecause we all fired at anything thatmoved, regardless of its location. I amsure we did hit some of our own ships,but anti-aircraft guns will not sink aship. During these attacks, we wereconstantly strafed by fighter planeswho made there passes with quick can-non fire. At near dusk, we began todraw fire from their battleship. Wecould see the flash from their largeguns over the horizon. We had evi-dence of their marksmanship withinour convoy. Several ships were hitbefore it turned its guns on the Britishwar ships that were coming after it. Thereturn of the high altitude bombers andraiding squadrons of torpedo planesjust before dark brought an end to thedaylight attacks.

You must understand that at this timeof the year there is only three hours ofdarkness. It would get dark at mid-night and last till 3 a.m. in the morning.However, we were attacked at night by

The German radio broadcast, their equiv-alent to Japan‚s “Tokyo Rose”, comple-mented the ships of PQ-18 for reachingtheir destination, but wanted to remindthe convoy that they had to come backthrough the blockade on there return tothe United States. After unloading oursupplies for the Russian front, the shipsremained in Archangel, awaiting orders.

The plan, as directed by the Russian portcommander, was for all the ships to awaitthe winter snow storms. The plan was to

ride with these storms back through theblockade, using them as protectionagainst German air attacks. The Russianshad ice breakers ready to lead us out of theWhite Sea.

The weather at times would reach 58degrees below zero, but would be clearwith almost no wind at all. The gun crewsplayed softball for entertainment on dayslike this. The Russians thought that wewere crazy.

On November 17, 1942, a tremendoussnow storm moved in on us. TheRussians gave us the word that this wasthe storm that covered all of the north andwould be there for some time. If we weregoing to get out before the next spring, itwould have to be now, or we would besnowed in. The ships were ordered toleave port. With the help of the Russianice breakers we left the mouth of the riverand into the White Sea that day. Thesnow was so thick and the clouds were solow, that we could not see the other shipsthat left with us. We were ordered not tous out radio for communication for fearthe Germans would pick it up and knowwe were out there. As it turned out, thestorm was so big that it covered the NorthAtlantic and Barents Sea. We had noknowledge where our sister ships wereafter we left Archangle. We traveled theNorth Atlantic blindly for eight days.During this time our guns had becomefrozen and unable to be used. When theweather began to rise and we could seeparts of the blue sky, we took blow torch-es and heated the guns so they could beused if needed.

As the weather cleared and we could seethe horizon, we also spotted a war shipoff our stern. Through the use of blink-ers, and the proper code, we found outthat it was British. They instructed us tohold what we had because we were in themiddle of a mine field off the coast ofIceland. They said they would come inand bring us out. They could see we wereshot up pretty bad and offered to escort usinto Iceland.

corner for all Armed Guard crews. Menwho go through such actions have to behighly disciplined and trained, and tohave superb courage.

Among the ships sunk when GermanJU-88 bombers attacked the port of Barion the night of 2 December 1943 wasJohn Harvey, which was carrying mus-tard gas intended for use in retaliation bythe Allies if German forces initiated gaswarfare. Most of the released gas wascarried out to sea by an offshore breeze,but many military and civilian personnelwere temporarily incapacitated or killedby undetermined amounts of the gaswhich were held in solution in oil thatwas floating on the water. Of the more

than 800 casualties hospitalized after theraid, 628 suffered from mustard gasexposure. Sixty-nine deaths were attrib-uted in whole or in part to this cause.

Medical officers and aidmen treatingthe casualties were unaware of the pres-ence of the gas, which was diluted suf-ficiently to be detected by odor. In thebelief that casualties covered with oilbut showing no physical damage weresuffering from exposure and immer-sion, they were wrapped in blankets,still in their oil-soaked clothing, givenhot tea, and left as they were for twelveto twenty-four hours while the moreurgent blast injuries and surgical caseswere treated.

Those with the energy and will to cleanthe oil from their own bodies suffered noserious damage, but the remainder suf-fered varying degrees of mustard burns.Eyes began to burn about 6 hours afterexposure, and were so badly swollen in24 hours that many of the patientsthought themselves blind. The firstdeaths occurred without warning 18hours after exposure. About 90 percentof the gas casualties were American, thebulk of them merchant seamen. Since noU.S. hospital facilities were yet availablein Bari - equipment for all but one ofthe U.S. hospitals scheduled for thearea were destroyed in the bombing -casualties were hospitalized in Britishinstallations.

TRAGEDY AT BARI, ITALYNaval Armed Guard Service

during WWII: Tragedy at Bari ,Italy, 2 December 1943.

One of the most disastrous bombingattack against allied ships during theentire war took place at Bari, Italy, onDecember 2, 1943. This port was in theBritish theater of operations, but sev-eral American [merchant] ships with[U.S. Navy] Armed Guard aboard wereat Bari on that fateful day [when aGerman air raid occurred]. When thelast bomb had fallen, and the last shipexploded, and the large fires had runtheir course, 17 ships had been sunkand six damaged. There were fiveUnited States ships sunk and one dam-aged. One other United States shipcame through unscathed.

The Joseph Wheeler had her starboardside blown out and was on her port sidewhen her Armed Guard officer, whohad been ashore arranging for the payof his men, last saw her. The onlyArmed Guard survivors were the offi-cer and twelve men who were taking awell-earned liberty in the town. Therewere 15 Armed Guard dead or missingand 26 of the merchant crew missing.

The Samuel J. Tilden was bombed andthen sunk by two British torpedoes toprevent danger to other ships. A bombcrashed through to the engine room atabout 1920 and an incendiary bomb hitforward of the bridge. The Germanpilot, of the attacking aircraft, strafedthe deck with machine gun fire. Anti-aircraft fire from ashore also hit theship. A searchlight was [shined] on theship for seven minutes after the attackbegan, apparently because somebodyashore forgot to turn it off. All of theArmed Guard survived but the deadand missing among the merchant crewnumbered 10 and there were also casu-alties to Army personnel [who were onboard].All of the Armed Guard werelost with the John Harvey [which wascarrying mustard gas]. Most of themerchant crewmen were also missing.

Apparently the only people who sur-vived were those who were ashore.

The John L. Motley had grim luck onher trip to the Mediterranean. OnAugust 8, calcium carbine had causedan explosion and fire [on board]. Thencame her end at Bari. There were onlyfive survivors from her Armed Guard,and 30 of the merchant crew were miss-ing or dead. Four of her survivors wereashore. It was reported that threebombs hit the ship. The Lyman Abbottwas more fortunate, for she escapedwith only moderate damage. Herreport indicates that the harbor wascrowded with some 30 ships plus oneship outside and that the harbor soonbecame an inferno of flames and smokeaccompanied by violent explosions ofthe burning ships. The master ordered"abandon ship" at 2015 when severalburning ships drifted close, but shewas re-boarded [when the dangerpassed]. Her only damage from bombswas to her rudder, but the explosionsadded to her damage. One ArmedGuard was killed and the Army CargoSecurity Officer also died. Nearly allof the Armed Guards suffered burnsand some of them were hit by frag-ments. All in all, it was a grim night forthe Abbott, but she was able to leave onJanuary 10 [1944].

The Louis Hennepin was the only shipcarrying Armed Guard which escapedwithout material damage. But twobombs landed about 100 yards fromthe ship and two Armed Guard werewounded. Her Armed Guard officerreported that lights along the dockstayed on for 13 minutes after the firstbomb dropped, and he declared thatport facilities were inadequate and thatthere was a lack of coordination. Thisship fired some 6,000 rounds of 20mmammunition during the attack. She alsofired on December 11.

The John Bascom was hit by threebombs at 1945. This fine ship wasapparently the first in the harbor to

open fire on the attacking German air-craft. An explosion on the John L.Motley caused the whole port side ofthe Bascom to cave in. The ship did nothave a chance to survive. From thisawful carnage emerged one of the finestheroes of the Armed Guard Service.Ensign Kay K. Vesole won the NavyCross and later had a Navy ship namedfor him. But he lost his life in heroicservice to his crew. Wounded in theshoulder and over the heart, he stillwent from gun to gun directing actionand rendering aid to the wounded anddying. Weak from the loss of blood, heconducted a party of his men belowdecks and supervised the carrying ofwounded to the boat deck. When theship was in a burning and sinking con-dition he supervised the loading of theonly lifeboat not destroyed. His crewhad to force him into the lifeboat. Hewanted to swim to make room for menwith worse wounds than his. He insist-ed on rowing with his uninjured arm ashe helped disembark the wounded. Hehelped carry wounded to the bombshelter and had to be restrained fromgoing back into the flames to rescueother wounded when an ammunitionship blew up. He dispatched a signal-man to the end of the jetty to signal forhelp. He refused to embark in the firstboat sent to rescue the Bascom sur-vivors but was forced into the second.He appears to have sacrificed everychance to recover in his efforts to saveothers. He was in every sense one of thefinest heroes of World War II and typ-ified the finest in the traditions of theNavy and the Armed Guard Service.From this destruction of his ship nineof his Armed Guard perished withhim. Nine men from that crew wereawarded Bronze Star Medals.

Bari was one of those sudden blowswhich did great damage but did notlong delay the victorious march of theallies in Italy. The blow was too suddenfor Armed Guard to do much to defendtheir ships. It well illustrates the dan-ger which was always just around the

After sailing for nine days in a snow stormwe arrived in Iceland, at the port ofReykjavik. The arrival date wasNovember 26, 1942. At this port we didnot see any of the ships we left Russiawith nor to this day do we know if theymade it back or not. We left Iceland onNovember 28, 1942 for Scotland to pickup supplies to get us back to New York.We arrived in Scotland on November 30,1942. We stayed in Scotland tillDecember 15, 1942. Then we left for NewYork and arrived in New York onDecember 24, 1942. There was so muchthat happened during this eight day battlethat I haven’t mentioned.

The S. S. William Moultrie received theGallant Ship award during the war for theRussian run that I was involved in. TheMoultrie also received congratulationsfrom the Port Commander and the PrimeMinister of Great Britain. Each memberof the crew received a months pay as abonus from the Russian Government.Also each member received a Letter ofCommendation from the U. S. Chief of

Naval Personal which stated, “For con-spicuous courage, tenacity and fightingspirit during a running battle againstenemy German forces”. The Silver Starwas awarded to the Gunnery Officer forhis leadership during this conflict. Eachgun crew member was awarded a CitationRibbon Bar from the U. S. Navy Directorof Medals. On December 8, 1992 at theRussian Embassy in Washington D. C.each member of the gun crew received aCommemorative medal and ribbon fromthe Russian Government along with a let-ter from President Boris Yeltsin and theentire Russian people for our courage andpersonal contribution to the Allied sup-port of his country during WWII.

I wrote this poem while in a hospital inScotland about a shipmate who won-dered if any one really cared if he lost hislife. It reads like this;

WHO CARES ?

In this gun tub I sit waste deep in snow,Which once was white ˆ but now is red,

With a shipmate’s body that I now hold,Once filled with life ˆ but now is dead.While he lay in this snowy bed, I felt he real-ized he soon would be dead, Because hemotioned me closer to his head, So I mighthear the last two words he said –WHOCARES?

Later when they laid him at my feet,And I covered his body with a sheet,And when we slipped him off into the deep,His burning words in my ears seemed torepeat–WHO CARES?

As I stood and watched his body disappear,This shipmate that I held in my arms so dear,The sacrifice he made will remain foreverclear, He had given his life, yet he wanted tohear–WHO CARES?

Now after all these years, I look back to thatday, And since that occasion, now when Ipray, I thank God, who allowed him thosefew seconds to stay, In my arms, so he couldhear me say–WHO CARES?

MURMANSK RUN

With the war over in Europe, the need for men and women tocontinue to do the jobs in ship building and ship repair wasgrowing by leaps and bounds and wages were good. Many hadlost their jobs in Detroit and elsewhere due to supply anddemand for more bombers were not needed yet the the unem-ployed refuse to leave to go to the West Coast to work where thedemand for their labor was great. The Pacific had become anamphibious war to some extent.

The magnitude of fighting an amphibious war such as“Squadron 10” was one of the WW II most guarded secrets andsuccessful “secret weapons.’ “Squadron 10” was a floating sup-ply base composed of hundreds of vessels including oil tankers,floating dry docks, repair ships, tenders, freighters, barges, bar-racks, canteens and everything needed to maintain a huge fight-ing force thousands of miles from home. To “Squadron 10” andother bases in the Pacific, a constant stream of Merchant Shipscarried the vast resources of supplies needed in warfare. Theneed for a large amount of supplies and fuel used by Squadron10 in just strikes against Iwo Jima and Tokyo alone showed the5th alone consumed enough fuel to fill a train of tank cars 238miles long-an approximately 200 millions gallons. All of thishad to be moved over 8,000 to where needed. Enough food was

stored aboard the ships to feed the city of Columbus, Ohio atthe time for a month; 52 million pounds of food. Four hundredeighty-eight freight cars loads of ammunition was supplied.Enough gasoline was burned by the fleet and planes to run30,700 American cars for a full year. Into the operation, 9 mil-lion gallons of drinking water, 270,000 pounds of soap, 5 mil-lion packages of cigarettes, 300 tons of candy and other canteensupplies.

It took two years to build up 20,000,000 tons of supplies inEngland just for the Normandy invasion. What it cost for all ofWW II is unknown exactly but there is one thing for sure, theLiberty Ships,Tankers and other cargo type ships and crews didtheir job and did it well. The people of the world owes a lot tothe Merchant Seamen of WW II and the USN Armed GuardGun Crews then and to the merchant crews that sailed the seassince WW II and are still doing what their country ask.

The above is just a drop in the bucket for what the ship and crew deliveredaround the world then and are still delivering. They keep the food chainopen and everything we sell overseas and things we purchase from them inexchange. This is the CHAIN REACTION there keeps world tradeamong nations working. Say a prayer that it continues.

One of the last of the PacificNorthwest ships to fall victim toenemy action was the Portland-builtLiberty ship William S. Ladd, operat-ed for the War ShippingAdministration by the WeyerhaeuserSteamship Co. Bombs from a Japaneseplane set the freighter on fire in LeyteGulf, where she later foundered.

There was no loss of life, although sixmerchant seamen of her crew were hos-pitalized. Although most of her cargohad already been unloaded, a quantityof gasoline and ammunition remainedin her holds at the time of the attack. The Ladd was commanded by Capt.Nels F. Anderson of Silverdale,Washington, who was a former mateon the C. S. Holmes under Capt.Backland and later master of thebarkentines Forest Friend and ForestPride. (Gordon Newell, MaritimeEvents of 1945, H.W.McCurdy,Marine History of the PacificNorthwest.,p. 528).

I was a soldier on the Ladd, workingwith the unloading detail at the time itwas sunk. I always wondered for whomthe ship was named. The above accountis mostly accurate, but the ship wasanchored off Leyte when a JapaneseZero dove into the number four holdwith a bomb attached and set 55-gallondrums of aviation gasoline afire. Thestern of the ship sank to the shallow seafloor while the bow remained at anchorabove water.

I was a PFC in Antitank Company,152nd Infantry Regiment, 38th(Cyclone) Infantry Division. We hadbeen in New Guinea since June and leftin October, 1944, for the Philippines.My account of the William S. Ladd'slast voyage is as follows:

From somewhere near Buna in New

Guinea eleven hundred of us sailedaboard the William S. Ladd, a Libertyship not designed to receive passen-gers. Temporary, wooden box-likecontraptions fastened to the rail servedas our latrines. My company slept ondecking in number one hold near theanchor. We had cots but they remainedstacked in one corner. If set up, not allof our bodies could be accommodated.Seeing soldiers packed together likesardines, I decided to sleep on the widemakeshift stairs leading into the hold. Minutes after midnight the shipdropped anchor in a northern NewGuinea harbor to form up with a con-voy. The sudden rattle of the chainstartled us into thinking that a torpedohad hit the ship. The entire hold emp-tied by running over my prone bodystretched out on the stairs. After that Islept topside on deck, rain or not.

Most of the voyage was uneventful,except for one day of extremely highwaves that at times completely hidfrom view our accompanying destroy-ers.

Lined up for breakfast on deck a dayoff the Philippine Islands, the troopswere startled by a lone Japanese air-plane. It dove from clouds anddropped a bomb near the freighterlocated at coffin corner, the most dan-gerous spot in any convoy.

That near miss commenced a day ofdive bombings and torpedo attacks byairplanes. From morning until dusk,enemy airplanes swept over the convoylike clockwork, three at a time. Neverdid gunners shoot down all three.Most times not even one airplaneplunged into ocean waves. I don'tknow what was worse, the air attacks orthe spent shell fragments droppingfrom the sky as multiple guns on theforty ships in the convoy and the Navyescort vessels opened fire.

Two torpedoes traveling side by sidepenetrated the entire convoy without

striking a single ship. Mesmerized andshaking in my boots, I watched thepaired tubes approach just below thesurface. War movies showing torpe-does zipping along are quite accuratein that respect. Both barely missed thebow of a ship to our left and passedbehind the stern of our ship by lessthan six feet. They crossed bare yardsin front of the Liberty ship to ourright.

Airplanes badly damaged several shipsthat day. I saw one ship sink and Inoticed several burning on the horizonas we pulled away from them. Anotherone carrying soldiers from our divisionlimped to anchorage. A suicide, orkamikaze, airplane had plunged intoan ammunition locker under its four-inch forward gun and concussionkilled more than 300 men, wiping outan entire company of medics. I heardthat they had been ordered into thehold to avoid the dropping shell frag-ments. The disabled vessel, lacking ananchor, tied alongside our ship whenwe anchored two or three miles off thecoast of Leyte. Both ships kept theirengines fired up for hasty departures incase of air raids.

I made the mistake of moseying over tocheck the damage. Never will I forgetthe sight of all those. bloated bodiesfloating in a hold flooded to combat aflaming holocaust. On deck oneburned corpse actually fused into andbecame part of a winch's cable drum. Hours after my platoon landed ashoreI became part of a detail that returnedto the Ladd to finish unloading opera-tions. Near dusk a Japanese Zero sud-denly turned and dove straight forwhat looked like the exact spot where Istood near the bow. An attached bombshowed clearly visible. I remainedrooted to the deck as the Zero loomedlarger and flew into number four holdat the rear.

In last issue of the Pointer Magazine (May/July 2009) on thebottom of page 8, someone wrote about Anne Marsh and theInstitute on WWII and Human Experience. I received severalphone calls from Armed Guard veterans who served their coun-try during WWII. Thank you very much for phoning. I wouldlike to take a moment to tell you a little bit about me, as well theInstitute on WWII and Human Experience.

In 2005, my dream job of working full time for the Institute onWWII came true. I am an Archivist and in charge of theInstitute’s webpage and all its computer support. I also run theResearch room assisting students and researchers in finding col-lections pertaining to their topics of interest. I supervise scan-ning of collections as well as other preservation tasks. Also, Ioccasionally travel, giving presentations to groups such as FSUEmeritus groups, church groups, school classes, WW II veter-an’s reunions, etc. My dad served in the Marines in the Pacific soworking for the Institute is my way of honoring him and allWorld War II veterans.

In 1997, the Institute on WWII and the Human Experience wasestablished. Two people contacted Dr. Oldson, Director of theInstitute within about six months wanting to have their WWIImemorabilia preserved for future generations. They did notwant their memorabilia thrown out. One of Dr. Oldson's areasis the Holocaust, so he immediately said yes, realizing the needfor a depository for WWII memorabilia. Since 1997, we havereceived over 7,000 collections from individuals. They rangefrom letters, diaries, photographs, newsletters, artifacts,artwork, books, memoirs, maps. We collect anything relatingto WWII (except we're overstocked on uniforms).

Being that we are part of Florida State University and in theHistory department we have many students coming in to do

research, reading about the everyday men and women whoserved their country during WWII, whether it was on theHome Front or overseas. The students are reading and learningabout it in a way that they will never get from a textbook. Thememorabilia makes it come alive for them. It is not just collegestudents coming for research; we have had sixth graders doingHistory Fair projects. The film producers for the HistoryChannel used our collections extensively for the documentaryseries The Color of War, and other outside researchers, haveused our collections.

If you have your WWII memorabilia, or have written yourexperiences down, don't let them be thrown away. I know thatwe do not have much on the men who served in the ArmedGuard. Help us to expand our collections on the service andexperiences of the Armed Guard during WWII. If you partici-pated in the Murmansk Run, I have a student doing a Honorthesis about that, this semester.

the bottom of the hold contained fifty-gallon drums of aviation gasoline. Wealso discovered that number five holdcontained rounds of 155mm artilleryammunition. Flames shot hundreds offeet into air above the ship's super-structure. Ocean waters blazed asignited gasoline floated outward fromthe Ladd.

A non-swimmer, I climbed into theonly undamaged lifeboat with theship's crew. At its bottom lay a piece ofthe Zero's airplane wing, part of a redcircle visible. Other soldiers released

life rafts forward and jumped intowaters not yet aflame. As we rowedaway, the stern of the Ladd skyrocket-ed fiery balls into air in a Fourth-of-July display lasting into the night.Shells exploded and sped upward likeRoman Candles. Last seen, the Ladd'sbow rode high at anchor and the sternrested on the ocean's shallow bottom.

I believe that the merchant marinesailors received ship sunk bonuses inaddition to the usual hazardous-zonebonus and signed aboard other vesselsreturning home. Navy gunners hurried

to the States for 3D-day shore leavesand an extra clothing allowance grant-ed navymen off sunken ships. Acolonel bawled me out for being on thebeach out of uniform and unarmed. Ihad no shoes, wore a borrowed bluenavy shirt and had neglected to crawldown into the hold to rescue my rifle.

As theenemy approached the city, all Armyand Navy personnel were evacuated,leaving only two medical men at themake-shift hospital to meet the Japswhen they entered Manila January2nd. The Japs posted guards, system-atically confiscated all medical sup-plies and equipment, and, declaringSanta Scholastica was “too” good forthe Americans and ordered that they bemoved to a small, run-down elemen-tary school in the Pasay district of thecity.

This was gradually done during thenext two months. There, they remaineduntil the end of May, and then wereagain moved, to the famous oldBilibid prison, built by the earlySpaniards, used by our forces duringthe Spanish-American War and laterby the Philippine gavernment. Herethe Americans stayed for sixteenmonths, the doctors working heroical-ly under the callous regime of thegloating, impatient enemy. Dysentery,

malaria and the diseases of malnutri-tion took a heavy toll. The doctorswere in a constant struggle with theircaptors to get even the starvationrations and the trickle of medical sup-plies they were allowed and to keep illmen hospitalized as long as possibleagainst the insistance of the Japs thatmen who could barely walk be put towork building airstrips. At length, theJapanese decided the doctors were“resisting the will of the ImperialArmy” and the doctors and patientswere broken up into two groups to besent to prison camps. One group,including Commander Erickson wastaken to the terrible Cabantuan prisoncamp ninety miles, northwest ofManila. In the fourteen months, thedoctor existed in this hell, 6,000 mendied from illness, exhaustion and Japmurder. They were fed a diet of smallquanities of rice and grass, with tinybits of steer heads and hooves once aweek. Crawling with filth and disease,the internees were forced to work gru-elling hours on the prison farm andbuilding defenses. For the slightestinfraction of the minutely, eloboraterules, hundreds of prisoners were beat-en to death with two-by-fours, shot,beheaded and tortured.

Eating an onion on the farm meant exe-cution. The captors managed to aug-ment their food by trapping and eatingsnakes, rats, cats and iguanas that cameinto the camp. The doctor, weak and illwith beri-beri and dysentery, wasspared the manual labor. Beingallowed to do that, it allowed him to do

what he could for his fellow-prisonersas a doctor. And then, on the morningof January 7th, 1945, the remnants ofthe internees were suddenly told theywere no longer prisoners of war. Thatafternoon, the guards departed, leav-ing a month’s supply of rice. The nextmorning, there were no Japs aroundand the Americans immediately raidedthe Jap side of the camp, seizing largesupplies of flour, rice and many steers.From then on, they were left largely tothemselves. The Japanese turned theplace into a sort of rest camp forexhausted troops from the front, and theformer prisoners were not molested.

On the 9th of January, the Americans heardthe shelling at Lingayen Gulf, sixty milesaway, and jubilantly knew something washappening. On January 30th, at seven-thir-ty in the evening, the American troops of the6th Rangers and Filipino guerrillasswooped down on the camp, killed everyguard, and in twenty minutes were convoying511 rescued men through the twenty-fivemiles of enemy territory on an all-night to theAmerican lines. Only two of the doctors whowere at the Cavite hospital when the Japscame had survived. Commander Ericksonis the only survivor from the Cavite NavyYard Dispensary. Finally, he was free to gohome to his wife and two children in LosAngeles, California from whom he hadreceived only eleven letters in three years andthe latest one was two years old. On March17, 1945, Commander H.A. Erickson wason a ship, headed home from three nightmar-ish years of starvation, and barbaric acts ofthe troops of war at the hands of the JapImperial Army –calloyd

It’s been many moons since I wrote toyou. I want to THANK YOU for theFeb/April 2009 POINTER Edition Ireceived, and all the other Editions inthe past. It brought back many memo-ries since I was attached to theBrooklyn, N.Y. Armed Guard Center1ST Ave-52ND Street from 1942-1945as Ship’s Company in the SupplyDepartment. There are many names Irecognized in the listing of the FirstAnniversary Banquet. At the CapitalHotel in NYC on 9/17/43. All the ros-ter of officers on Christmas 1942 arefamiliar as well.

My memory brings me back to the dayswhen the Armed Guard crews reportedback to the Center for rest and transferback to another ship. Also, the sur-vivors of sunken ships who came backall covered with thick, black oil allover, nothing on but their skivvies andglad to be alive from being torpedoedby a German U-Boat.

They had to be cleaned up, fed, issuednew clothing, bedded down and readyto be shipped out again. After a fewdays of rest. This is where the Ship’sCompany, including Supply andDisbursing Departments helped tosquare them away. I learned a lot fromthe letters that I read from the ArmedGuard survivors. Some of the storiesthey told were unbelievable of whatthey had to endure. Thanks Cal foryour inspiration and contribution to theArmed Guard through the POINTER.BRAVO ZULU. Sincerely,

ENROLL FOR MERCHANT MARINENearly 11,000 young men volunteered for service in the merchant marine in September, according

to figures from the Shipping Board recruiting station.All are inexperienced in seagoing and eligible

for training as apprentices before going into merchant crews.This enrollment was more than 2 and

one-half times the capacity of the board’s 12 training Ships, which can take on 4,000 men a month.

Spanish influenza retarded training for the month, but the board announces that its training ships

are now free of the disease and that the present waiting list of volunteers will be reduced material-

ly in October. The merchant marine is the only national maritime service in which inexperienced

men may now volunteer.

Dear Cal,

Enjoyed the copy of the POINTER. Ihad not read many pages when I ranacross the article about the S.S.TONTO at Saipan. I was Messman at17 years old on the Ethopian Victoryand we had just unloaded the majorityof our load at Anguar in the PalauGroup consisting of bombs for the B-24group to bomb the Phillipines. We stillhad a large tonnage of incindiarieswhich we took to Saipan. We arrivedjust before Christmas 1944. We wereallowed ashore and I went up to the air-base where we saw B-29s which we didnot know even existed. We met some ofthe Air Force personnel and we toldthem what we had brought them. Theyassured us that they would deliver themto Japan for us.

We left Saipan and returned to theStates and I caught another ship, theS.S. BUCKNELL VICTORY andloaded at Port Chicago, Ca. and head-ed back to the Pacific war zone. Wejoined a Convoy to Ulithi and tookammo to Okinawa where I celebratedmy 18th birthday. We were unloadingwhen the battleship USS NEW MEX-ICO was hit by a Kamakazi on May13th in the number one hold killing areported, at the time, eigtht gunners.While unloading, I met some of the

Marines and in talking to them, Ifound out that there was a Marine frommy hometown. The next day, he visitedme. I did not see another buddy as hewas doing picket duty duty and theywere hit. He was seriously woundedbut lived to be 77 years of age. Wereturned to Frisco in June and I caughtthe S.S. CAPE FLORIDA to theSouth Pacific and the Phillipines withmedical supplies. I returned to theStates, joined the Army, winding up inJapan in the 11th Airborne.

My reason for joining the MerchantMarines was that I had an older broth-er, Robert E. Shackelford who was tor-pedoed near Bermuda on June 28, 1942and survived 21 days on a liferaft. Hehad attended King’s Point from theCCCs in 1941. We didn’t know what theMM was or did. His ship sailed fromNew York on Dec. 1, 1941 and we didn’tknow he had sailed and we had no ideathe name of the ship. They sailed toIndia and returned toward the Statesand the ship was torpedoed somewherenear Bermuda June 28, 1942 and wedidn’t know until he got home. Thanks.Sincerely,

ArtMoore’s book, “A CARELESS WORD-ANEEDLES SINKING” and the date yougave of his ship’s sinking and there was thelisting of the S.S. RAPHAEL SEMMESsinking 875 miles East of Cape Canaveral,Fl. enroute from Bombay, India. She carrieda crew of 37 Merchant Seamen and 19 wentdown with the ship.Ten of the survivorswere taken aboard the sub and given medicalsupplies before being released back to the thelife rafts.The sub was bombed and sunk nearSpain on May 2, 1943. USNAG WWI AND WWII1943. This ship had mainly aNorwegian crew but also had 14 U.S.Naval Armed Guard on board. 2 ofwhom were killed, unfortunately nonames were given of these two men.Ensign Shotwell was in charge of theNaval Armed Guard. The ship was onpassage Basra and Table Bay for Bahia,Trinidad and Philadelphia, and wastorpedoed about 300 miles south ofWalvis Bay (South West Africa) theposition being 27.35S 14.22E. Thecargo was chrome ore, asbestos, lead,and copper concentrates. Crew 33, 1USA 1 Belgian, 1 Danish, 4 British and26 Norwegian. 7 casualties includingthe Master and 2 Gunners. The shipbroke in half and went down in threeminutes. One of the lifeboats was bro-ken by the first torpedo which struckstarboard side amidships followed by asecond torpedo about half a minutelater just forward of the bridge. Threelifeboat got into the water, but one cap-sized. Most of the crew jumped intothe water and were picked up by thetwo remaining boats. The boats set sailfor the coast 50 miles away and landedon a small island the next day, fromthere they went to another island. Fromhere they went to Luderitz Bay inSouth West Africa. According to theAdmiralty War Diary 38 survivorsarrived at Luderitz Bay.

have another short service at thelifeboat house on the edge of the sea,and at 1100 hours prompt a maroon isfired to mark the start of the 2 minutesilence, followed then by anothermaroon to mark the end of the silence.Then we proceed to the rowing clubopposite the lifeboat house where weand the Royal Navy get together for asocial get together for two or threehours. and the progress is very impressive.

The Greek Merchant seaman are vis-iting the vessel on a daily basis admir-ing the efforts for the restoration andare excited with the results. We mustremember that after WW2, theGreeks acquired over 600 of the 950Liberty Ships that were used as mer-chant vessels, and sailed on them forover 30 years. When the Arthur M.Huddell arrived in Piraeus onJanuary 11,2009, many of the GreekLiberty ship seamen greeted the ves-sel with tears in their eyes, recallingtheir sailing days. I treasure each issue of “THEPOINTER”. My husband, Richard J.was in the Armed Guard as a signalmanon the S.S. JOHN BARRY which wassunk August 28, 1944 in the ArabianSea off the Coast of Saudi Arabia whileenroute from Philadelphia, Pa. to RasTanura with general cargo and 26 mil-lion dollars in silver bullion. TwoMerchant Seamen were killed. Thesurvivors were picked up by the Dutchtanker, S.S. SUNETTA who carriedtheir survivors to Aden and the S.S.BENJAMIN BOURN who carriedtheirs to Khorramshar, Iran. TheGerman sub was sunk in the Straits ofMalacca by the British submarine HMSTRENCHANT on 9/23/44. TheBARRY is listed as a “TREASURESHIP of the TWENTIETH CENTU-RY” by author Michael Pickford.

I understand that some of the crew werecontacted and given a coin. My husbandwho wrote the report for the NavyCaptain was not interviewed. It is a long

story. I have not been able to locate anyof his shipmates. The SALVAGESTORY is facsinating. Thank you sin-cerely for what you have done to pepetu-ate the memory and history of the USNArmed Guard in WW II. Donationenclosed.

Everything is going fine. The story aboutthe poor Russian from a POW camp ispretty sad. You know, during the lastconference between Roosevelt, Churchilland Stalin in Yalta they agreed that all ofthe Russian captives as well as refugeesfrom Soviet Russia would be returned tothe Soviet Union. It may sound awful,but Stalin called everybody who was cap-tured a deserter. Well, and another thing- here in Murmansk some of the refugeesand POW's (especially those who foughtagainst the communists and escaped afterthe Soviets won) were shot right after theydisembarked. It still remains one of thedarkest pages in Murmansk's history.They don't like to talk about it in Russia,you know, and they would rather let thestory pass away.

When theAFRICANER was sunk, and we wereall in the life rafts, the Gunnery Officerstood up and clapped when she wentunder. Our feet and ankles froze andlarge sores followed. We saw severalmen hanging on to the ice flows.

We picked up one who was frozen stiff.We had seen the S.S. MARY LUCK-ENBACH hit by a torpedo and disin-tergrated.

4/9/43: The Chief of Naval Personnelcommends you on your meritorious conductas a member of the Armed Guard Crew ofthe S.S. AFRICANDER which was sunkby enemy forces on September 13, 1942. Areport of the occurrence indicates that on thatdate mentioned, the convoy to which theAFRICANER was attached had beenheavily attacked by enemy submarines andaircraft. When an attack by fifty or sixty tor-pedo planes occurred at approximately 1550in the aftrenoon of the same day, the ArmedGuard Crew by their skillful anti-aircraftfire was successful in shooting down two ofthe raiders. During this attack, theAFRICANDER suffered two torpedoehits and within the space of a few minutes,began to settle at the stern. Despite the heavymachine gun fire from the planes, the abandon-ment of the ship was effected successfully andthere were no casualties either during theattack or in the evacuation. Your courage, cool-ness and outstanding performance of dutythroughout the above action were in keepingwith the highest traditions of the NavalService.

( The AFRICANDER, ex-Italian S.S.AUSSA, was taken over by the U.S.Government under an Excutive order,Public Law 101, at the Port of New Yorkon Sptember 11, 1941. She was attacked

by German aircraft about 60 miles southof Spitzbergen, while enroute from LochEwe, Scotland to Archangel, Russia witha cargo of machinery plus 6 tanks and 5planes on deck. All the names of theMerchant Crew and USN Armed Guardsurvivors are listed in Capt. Art Moore’sbook, “A CARELESS WORD-----ANEEDLESS SINKING” which list allcargo type ships sunk in WW II.)

Records show that James King wasdetached at Rosneath, Scotland for fur-ther assignment. There he was trained bythe British Commandos with survivorsof American sailors who ships had beensunk and ended up in the invasion ofNorth Africa and was detached from thecommando unit after being severelyburned while diving for sunken shipsand boarded the USS LYON on 2/23/43arriving in New York 2/23/43 and back tothe AGC Brooklyn, N.Y. 3/12/43 asGM1/c. He had participated in theassault on and seizure of Oran, Mers-el-Kebir and Arzew. He was eligible for theEuropean-African area campaign medalwith one bronze star, in accordance ofAlnav 287-1942 as stated by F.T.Spelman, Captain, U.S. NavyCommanding. James E. Enjoy the POINTER very much. Asfar as I know, only 3 of us are left fromthe S.S. BLADENBURG tankercrew; Schrippo, Acy Lee and myself.When we got back to Panama, wecaught the S.S. JOHN THOMASand I was at the helms to the port ofMobile, Alabama. I served on theLST 1020. Four years later, I was inthe Active Reserve and was sent toKorea on the LST 1141.

I didn’t realize that at age of 76, Iwould bring an LST back into thesame seaport of Mobile--YES!! theLST 325 from Greece after locating itin 1996. After six trips to Greece, wefinally got her home on Jan. 10, 2001.This was the 3rd LST I had served on.Both LSTs were built in my home-town of Seneca, Illinois. I got out ofservice July 1952. Merchant Marines receivecredit after 63 years

FELLSMERE – Nearly 30 World War IIveterans who served in the US Navy ArmedGuard and Merchant Marines finallyreceived the recognition they deserve 63years after the war.

“I think it’s the most beautiful thing the gov-ernment has done for me,” said veteranThomas Vitale, of Vero Beach, who traveledto Marsh Landing Restaurant from VeroBeach with his wife to accept a certificate ofrecognition.

Members of the two groups traveled fromall over to receive their certificates, includ-ing one from Cocoa and others from Port St.Lucie, Melbourne, West Melbourne,Barefoot Bay, Sebastian, Fellsmere, VeroBeach and numerous other towns out of thearea.

“We wouldn’t have won the war withoutyou guys,” U.S. Congressman Bill Posey

said Saturday morning, addressing a packedroom of about 70. “We wouldn’t be freetoday” if not for your service.

Rep. Posey’s office has been working for thelast year trying to get certificates made tohonor the members of the US Navy ArmedGuard and Merchant Marines in his dis-trict.

“We were sweating,” member KorkyKorker said in introduction to the congress-man, adding that they didn’t know until thelast minute that Rep. Posey would be at themonthly breakfast.

The congressman, with assistance from hisveterans affairs assistant, Chris Hill, called29 veterans up to receive their recognition.

“They’re often overlooked,” Hill said afterthe breakfast of the members of the USNavy Armed Guard and those of theMerchant Marines.

He explained that their contributions dur-ing World War II were crucial to the war

effort, keeping the American military sup-plied with necessities. The MerchantMarines – a civilian group – was often thetarget of German U-boats.

“Who knows how the war would haveturned out” if not for the members of theArmed Guard and Merchant Marines? Hillasked.

“It is truly humbling and an honor” to pres-ent the certificates, Rep. Posey said just as hestarted to announce the names of the veter-ans.

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,”he said.

A month ago, I called and gave yousome very good info about the ArmedGuard. It was about my first talk aboutthe Armed Guard and I was proud totalk about my old unit. And Cal, thebig old Eagle and my Liberty Shipwith the 20 MM cannon and my oldswab with his seabag seemed to get alot of attention. We had about 65 oldVeterans and their wives. When we gettogether. the “STUFF” really flys. Ijust wanted to let you know that my 3years in the Armed Guard is time I willnever forget and I was glad to tellthem.

Dear Cal,

On September 14, 1942, my dad and Igot on the subway to Manhatten forthe recruiting station. I had beenbothering my father since June to signfor me to join up because I was finally17 year old. He kept refusing but hefinally gave up and decided to let meenlist. The Marines wanted me but Isaid “NO” as the navy was where Iwanted to go. It was a decision that Inever regretted. After my dad signedthe papers, the Chief Petty Officerhanded us all a nickel for a ride on thesubway out to Brooklyn AGC. I hadplans for the GREAT LAKES;NEWPORT, R.I. or even California.But Brooklyn was our destination. Itwasn’t much of a ride for me because Iwas from the Bronx at the time.

My dad went with me to the AGCBrooklyn at 1 st Ave. and 52 nd St. fromthe subway and we marched together tothe gate, then he said his “Goodbyes” tome with tears in his eyes. When he left, Isaid to myself, he doesn’t have far to go tothe Bronx and I started to laugh tomyself. The Center inside was a “madhouse”, British sailors; men whose ship

had been torpedoed outside the 3 milelimit, walking around, getting more gearfrom the commissary to catch anothership out again. Then, they had us newrecruits to contend with. There musthave 5,000 guys walking all around thatHall. It was also scary seeing those guysthat had already been torpedoed justoutside of New York come in. It certain-ly was a fine way to start a navy career. Igrew up real fast that same day. I tookmy “BOOTS” right there in Brooklyn. Iwas one of the youngest guys in the com-pany. After “BOOTS”, the guys took meup to Murphy’s Bar on 4 th Ave. to havea beer. I had never drank in my life. Well,a “Donny Brook” broke out in the barand I ran for my life out of the bar. Iescaped but a lot of the men werebrought in to the Brig by the ShorePatrol. Cal, it was an experience that I’llnever forget so you can see I was learn-ing life real fast. Coming from theBronx, I loved New York but I got tolove Brooklyn as well. The people fromBrooklyn treated the Armed Guard welland they did their best to make us feel athome. Cal. I could go on with more storybut I’d better end it before I get into a“SEA STORY”. I just wanted people toknow how it was to enter service fromalmost the same town and what went on.

Dear Crew, Nov. 15, 2009 Boy!! I sure left myself wide open with the Cap Order Form in the May/July POINTER. My intent was to say:Orders are to be made by Jan. 1, 2010, unless you came aboard after Nov. 1, 2009 , as that would be the cut-offdate so I will let you know “NOW”. I should have put–“YOU DON”T NEED TO CUT THE FORM OUTOF THE POINTER. JUST TELL WHAT YOU WANT”. It is taking too much time but I am happy somany wanted them and are on their heads across the USA. I had to re-order and it took time. If you didn’t get yourcap, advise, as the packet may have been destroyed in the mail, or; I may over looked sending. I will not re-orderanything after the Jan 1st date. When I run out of caps, I will just put the checks in the bank unless you put a noteto return. Now back to the POINTER.

I want to THANK all of you for showing your appreciation of the Cover of the May/July POINTER with the5 Sullivan Brothers. If anyone knows the where abouts of any of the family, advise and I will send them a copy.On pages 22/23 of the same POINTER, the ship name should have been S.S. HARWOOD instead of HAY-WOOD. (I didn’t catch it)

As of 11/15, 2009, I have entered No. 22,298 names into the Computer since we first bought our first AGComputer. About 1,000 are Merchant Seamen, Historians, Museums, etc. We started out with about 1,300names in 1985 that we had located from June 1982 until then.

Today, the ship’s list slots in the computer numbers 11226 but many ships are duplicated as the slots are limited to12 names. When a person sends me his ships, I enter his name under the ship’s name and when I am notified by thefamily of his death, I place an (*) asterisk behind his name. Example: Ship: S.S. MIAOULIS-Camp* L. 1945Camp*C.1945, so if your husband or dad passes, notify me so I can place the * behind his name. If you want toremain on the mailing list, please advise at that time. Please note, when I go, all of this stops as it stands now. Itwould be posted on the 4 historical ship and Armed Guard Web Site: www.armed-guard.com. I hope the latterdoes not happen anytime soon.

I have sent the Navy Memorial a check for $3,000.00 from our Armed Guard Banking account to have a plaqueplaced inside on the wall there beside others crews, to let the generations of visitors who visits there in years tocome know that we served in the Armed Guard. The money pays for the plaque expenses and helps support theMemorial and a Memorial we can be proud of. Leo Gullage, of Florida (A snowbird-from Ma.-) and I had thepriviledge to carry our signs showing U.S.N. Armed Guard WW II October 13, 1987, the day they held the ded-ication MEMORIAL CEREMONY there, a day I was proud to be there to represent you and the crew. We hadthe pleasure of meeting so many Navy Units and we sat in the middle of 701 Pennylvania Ave. before the beauti-ful Memorial was built. See centerfold.

This POINTER is in Memory of all Branches of service in WW II; the Navy, Army, Marines, Airmen, Seabees, Merchant Seamen, Wacs,Waves, and especially to the Special Unit of the Navy known as the U.S. NAVY ARMED GUARD which was first used as Gun Crews inWW I on board cargo, tankers and troopships and where needed to protect the ship, cargo and the merchant crews who bravely ran the shipsto each port of call until deactivated after WW I.They were established again for the same purpose in September of 1941 and remained activeuntil WW II was over and the need for gunners were not needed. This issue is also in honor to all the people all over the world who builtships, planes, tanks, trucks, jeeps, guns, ammo and all things needed to win a war against the ruthless killers. Thanks to the farmers who fedus all. Thank God for seeing us through.
