The Logic of Other Power [1]

Other Power is none other than the power of the Tathagata's Primal Vow.1

WORDS OFTEN CONFUSE US. I’m not referring to long, complicated words. Or to words

from another language or words intended to trick us. Rather, what I mean to say is that words

themselves (as well as our use of words) can confuse us.

Now, of course, humans have to use words in order to write or speak, or even to think.

Without language, there wouldn’t be much that we could do. However, when we use words to

communicate or think about something (like an idea, belief or experience) we often get confused.

We conclude that there must be a “thing” out there somewhere. After all, if we’ve used a word to

talk about a thing, shouldn’t there be a thing out there?

For instance, we use the word “dog” to talk about that furry, animate creature lying over

there, with a wagging tail, drooling tongue and twitching ears. In contrast, we might use the word

“god” to talk about our belief in a supreme reality, which guides and judges our lives. However,

does that mean that “god” exists? Maybe “god” exists or maybe not. But just because we use the

word “god,” it doesn’t necessarily mean that we have solved the problem.2

I don’t wish to be critical of theistic religions. So allow me to say that we are often

confused by words such as “Other Power.” Other Power (tariki 他力) is central to the teachings

of Jōdo Shinshū, for it is “none other than the power of the Tathagata's Primal Vow.” We might

say that to understand Other Power is to understand Jōdo Shinshū. But let me use these words

instead: To realize Other Power is to live the Jōdo Shinshū path.

What could that mean? Well, for one, we are often confused by the words “Other Power.”

We hear those words and we have a tendency to conclude that there must an “Other” out there,

perhaps a supreme being that we call “Amida Buddha.” We also tend to think that that “Other”

has some kind of “power,” which is stronger than our own. Perhaps that being sits up in the

heavens and throws bolts of lightning down at us. Or, perhaps he is withholding his power until

we stop trying to save ourselves through our own self-effort or self-power. Or, perhaps he gently

picks us up when we stumble and carries us aloft to a better place.

We might hear the words “Other Power” and imagine all sorts of terrible or wonderful

scenarios. The problem comes when we get confused by the words and conclude that there is an

“Other” out there that has the “power” to save us as long as we believe in it or have enough faith

in it. This is a problem because that confusion prevents us from realizing Other Power.

Shinran Shōnin helps to remove our confusion when he says,

Other Power means to be free of any form of calculation.3

I believe that he is telling us: “Hey! Don’t be confused! Just because you hear the words ‘Other

Power,’ it doesn’t mean that there is a being out there, which exists ‘other than’ or outside of you.

Amida Buddha’s Primal Vow is the basic wish of life itself, which is to become itself and to give

itself to others. That wish will impact your life when your arrogance and ego no longer prevent

you from appreciating it.”

Stated in another way, I believe that it is important for us not to conclude that Other Power

is a thing, but rather to realize the logic of Other Power. We will look at that logic next month.

PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE

As we did not issue a message last month, we would like to begin this message by giving a “Thank You,” albeit belated, to those who planned and worked on the 2015 New Year’s Day service and luncheon. There was a great amount of coordination involved among our members to make this event run. Things were a bit different this year. As we announced at the event, instead of distributing door prizes to our members, the BBT made a donation of $500 to Buddhist Global Relief for their work providing food to hungry people here and around the world. We would like to thank everyone who supported and donated to this cause. We thank Aki and Emi Nakao for the use of their usu (mortar used for making mochi); to Denise Lapidus, Don Matsubara, and Susan Gabriel for the use of their mochi machines; to Susan Gabriel for chairing the mochi making; to Bradley Menda and his team for maintaining the rhythm with the Taiko for the mochi pounding; and to Dii Lewis and the Sangha Singers for leading us in song. Having so many of our Sangha members together was a great way to start 2015.

We also hope this edition arrives in time to promote the annual General Membership Meeting scheduled as part of the Family Dharma Service on March 8. This is a forum to report on the current state of the BBT, what occurred in 2014, and what we wish to ac-complish in 2015. More importantly, it provides an opportunity for the Sangha to voice membership concerns and opinions. We look forward to seeing you there.

In March we expect to perform the construction needed to renovate the barbeque pits at the back of the courtyard. The project should take a few days but will most likely span a weekend. Please be mindful of the back of the courtyard during this time.

On the horizon are the annual BCA Ministers’ Association and National Council Meet-ings to be held in San Diego, February 25 to March 1. BBT will represent the Bay Dis-trict with the Alameda, Enmanji, San Francisco, Oakland, San Mateo, Palo Alto, and Southern Alameda County Chapters. We will be reporting on significant issues addressed in this conference at the general meeting on March 8.

It is not too early to mention that the 66th Annual Satsuki Bazaar is scheduled for May 16-17, 2015. This major fund raising event for the Temple relies on the generosity of the Berkeley Sangha and friends for its success. Committee members are already hard at work planning for the event. On Fear and Anxiety

By Diane Ames

The doctor returned my call in record time. “Your symptoms may indicate an eye emergency,”

she announced. “You had better go to an ophthalmologist or an emergency room immediately!”

“Not my vision!” I squawked. “If I were to die, I guess I’d get used to being dead after a

while, but what if I couldn’t see any pretty little flowers? What if I couldn’t read?”

A few hours later, in the examining room, the doctor was still trying to calm me down.

“Please try to sit still,” she said. “How can I run the test to see if it’s glaucoma if you keep

shaking? After all, fear and anxiety are among the more negative manifestations of attachment.

They cause you to suffer the Pain of Loss of What You Love—in this case, your vision—over

and over again, long before you actually lose the loved object. And there, you see, it isn’t

glaucoma. It’s only a nasty episcleritis. Just use these eye drops and you’ll soon be fine.”

But later, as I sat down in the waiting room to tell my husband about this diagnosis,

another doctor came running out. “Oh, you’re still here,” she said. “Would you care to

participate in a study of patients with early macular degeneration?”

“But I don’t have macular degeneration!” I protested. “I have episcleritis.”

“Yes, you do, but Dr. Augenweh also found macular degeneration.”

“She could have said so!”

“Oh, it’s so common in patients in your age group that we don’t usually bring it up. Some

patients get all upset at the words ‘macular degeneration.’”

Since I am among them, they finally showed me the pictures they’d taken. “You see,”

they said, “it’s very early. At this point it’s only a few sinister little spots at the back of your eye.

It won’t affect your vision unless it progresses. We’ve known patients like you to go on for forty

years without progressing, and how many years do you think you have left? Of course we’ve

also known patients to progress, but you can improve your odds by eating lots of fruits and

vegetables and wearing sunglasses outdoors. That’s about all you can do at this stage, so there’s

no point in worrying about it. You’ll just stress your system if you do.”

“But I’m a worry wart. And they’re my eyes.”

“As a limited little human being, you will never lose your attachment to your body or the

self generally. But if all that matters is this little self, life becomes unbearable when the body

decays. So you have to see beyond your ego at least a little, difficult as it may be.”

HATSUMAIRI

INFANT PRESENTATION CEREMONY

Sunday, April 12, 2015

We cordially invite you to bring your newborns and children up to one year of age to

participate in our annual Hatsumairi Ceremony, which is to take place during our

Hanamatsuri service on Sunday, April 12, 2015.

Hatsumairi literally means “first Buddhist service.” Often translated as “Infant

Presentation Service,” Hatsumairi represents the first opportunity for parents to bring

infants who were born during the previous year to our Temple. At the same time, it gives

our Temple the opportunity to give expression to the Primal Vow of Amida Buddha,

which embraces people of all ages, genders, races and social strata.

If you wish to participate, please complete the form below and return it to the temple by

Sunday, April 5. Please call the temple at (510) 841-1356 if you have any questions

regarding this ceremony. Thank you!

Jr. YBA News By Skye Nikaidoh On February 8, the Berkeley Sangha Jr. YBA chapter attended the Bay District Winter Activity at the Palo Alto ice rink. We had lot of fun with the other YBA members of the Bay District and were not ice-solated within only our chapter.

We all struggled to keep our balance while skating, similar to the way we struggle to balance other aspects of our lives in order to follow the Middle Path. A big arigato to all the parents who helped organize and chaperone the event! Up next, our chapter will be assisting J-Sei with their Annual Crab Feed and will also be attending the Coast District Conference in March!
