ULSTER LOCAL STUDIES (Journal of the Federation for Ulster Local Studies), Vol. 6, No. 2, Summer 1981 ; Vol. 7, No. 1, Winter 1981.

Ann Hamlin in the opening article, "Field Archaeology : The Local Contribution" gives valuable advice worthy of

close study by all members of local societies. The implementation of her recommendations could add greatly to the body of archaeological knowledge and, more importantly, would provide a local frontline 'vigilante' corps which could

speedily contact official bodies when sites are threatened by reclamation or development work. With heavy machinery the landscape can be changed remarkably quickly and 'archaeological remains chewed to extinction'.

Nick Brannon follows the same line of thought when writing on "Urban Archaeology and the Local Historian".

More specifically, H. Cecil Patterson, deals with the preservation of rights of way. He outlines the main proposals in

pending legislation and quotes from a discussion paper issued by the Department of the Environment in 1980 : "The

Department recommends that district councils should make full use of responsible voluntary organisations in imple

menting schemes for the identification, improvement, way-marking, etc. of recreation footpaths." In the winter issue R. G. Haworth publishes Part I of his biographical sketch of John Bell of Dungannon,

1793-1861, drawing master, antiquarian, prehistorian, folklorist and writer. John de Courcy Ireland has an article in

each number, the first telling of Ulster seamen in the Confederate Navy in the U.S. Civil War; the second recording two

links between Ulster and Yugoslavia. Shorter accounts feature the Presbyterian Historical Society of Ireland, the Military History Society of Ireland, the

recently established North Belfast Historical Society and the Islandmagee & District Conservation Society. The reviews section of Ulster Local Studies has a special importance insofar as it lists publications seldom mentioned

in daily papers or other sources. No less than forty-eight books are reviewed ranging from the monumental work of Dr

W. A. McCutcheon, The Industrial Archaeology of Northern Ireland to Rev. Daniel Gallogly's Cavan's Football Story and varying in price from ?55 to 5Op.

THE OSBORNES OF COUNTY LOUTH, IRELAND AND NICOLLET COUNTY, MINNESOTA, U.S.A.

Genealogical History of Richard Osborne and Rose Breen and their descendants. Researched and compiled by

Josephine Osborne, Marguerite Osborne Seitzer and Francis A. Seitzer. Privately printed. 1978. v + 202 pp. This is a

seven generation genealogical history dealing with the descendants of Richard Osborne (1787-1858) and Rose Breen

(1787-1858), both from Mullacrew. With eleven of their twelve children they emigrated to the U.S.A. between 1847

and 1854, settling first in Wisconsin, where the farm they purchased adjoined that of Osborne cousins who had

emigrated earlier. The family was among the pioneer settlers of Minnesota, moving into the territory in 1854 and settling in Lake Prairie township, Nicollet county. Collectively the Osbornes at one point in the 1850s owned over 1500 acres in

this township and one of the farms was still in the family in 1978. The volume documents their descendants down to the

present day.
