Heritage Committee
Now is the Time!
If you’ve been thinking about asking
your friends and neighbors to join,
dues are half price for the rest of 2015.
First I would like to say how saddened and sorry I am for the loss of our family member and my
“PAL”, Felicia Donato. She was an icon in this club and will always be remembered. Please pray
for her and her family in this time of need. I’m sure she is up in heaven and probably right now
telling me in her famous words “GET A JOB”. Lol. I will truly miss her!
We had some really great events this month starting out with our”Proud to be an American”.
Thank you to Lucille and her committee for a wonderful night. Very Patriotic and two thumbs
up for Vic Paci entertaining us. Thank you to all the members who lent us their service pictures.
What a group of good looking guys, right ladies? Lots of fun. Our next event was “Cooking with
the Chef”. This was a Sunday afternoon and what a day! The food was excellent, thanks to Chef
Michael and so was the wine. Let’s not forget our own Phil Farino, who did a fantastic job
playing for us. This was put on by the Heritage Committee and Social and I’m hoping I can get
them to do another one, maybe in the near future. If you missed this, you will be sorry if you
don’t come to the next one. All I can say is “Outstanding” and thank you to the Heritage
Committee and Social Committee. Beach Street a Go Go was our Saturday night pub night and
they rocked the house. Great Job! We have also been open on Thursday Night with some really
good guitar players. This is a low key night with a light menu, low lighting, and a place where
you can come and enjoy talking to one another without any loud music. It’s a really nice
atmosphere and I hope to see more of you there on Thursdays from 5-10. Music is 6:30-9:30.
This month coming up has some exciting events. Our “Luau” is on August 8 and tickets are
available now. Don’t be left out - buy them now before they are all sold out. It’s going to be
some party. For Pub Night August 22 from 7-11 the Group “Shakedown” will be with us. You
know I have said it before but if you like the group Chicago, this is the band you will want to
see. These guys are phenomenal, ask anyone who came to the last one. Great things are
happening at this club and I want to thank all of you who keep supporting us. Please look at
your newsletter for all these events. I also want to thank everyone who is helping this Club be
what it is. I’m talking about all the volunteers who put in countless hours here. This club doesn’t
run itself. And when you see one of them please say thank you and maybe if you have some
time you could help also. The Board and I really appreciate all you do. This is “The Best Club On
The Strip” and “THIS IS OUR CLUB AND OUR FAMILY” Please pray for those members who are
in need of our prayers!
Grazie a Tutti

Pot of Gold
Congratulations to our new Social Director,
Lucille O'Day, as she is our June winner.
She has number 105.
I have a correction for our last newsletter POG information
- I had the winners name correct, but I fat fingered the
number. It was 82
I will start collecting for POG 49, October, November,
and December on August 15th and will finish on
September 15th. I know it comes around quickly. If
anyone wants to pay sooner, I will be more than happy to
accept your payment.
Once again, thank you to all my friends that help me with
50/50 and POG - It is impossible to do this without them. Jenny Martin

VERRAZANO & PIGAFETTA
Soon after Christopher Columbus’ voyages to the new world, many increasing adventures
followed suit. There were many Italians--two significant travelers were Giovanni Da Verrazano and
Antonio Francesco Pigafetta.
Giovanni was born in Tuscany in 1485. He was a Florentine explorer sailing under the
French flag. He grew up in Florence and received a good education. Sometime after finishing his
education he moved to Dieppe in France and entered the French Maritime Service. He traveled several
times to the Levant (countries bordering the Eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea) and in 1523 Francis
I of France agreed to provide him with two ships to discover a Western route to the orient.
In March of that year he arrived at what today is Cape Fear in North Carolina. He sailed
Northward from there up the Eastern seaboard to Nova Scotia. He made several discoveries--the New
York Bay, Narragansett Bay, and Block Island. He was the first European to enter New York Bay in
1524. It wasn’t until 85 years later (1609) that Henry Hudson sailed into it and for whom the river and
bay the English named.
Verrazano was lost in history, and virtually unknown until John N. La Corte, founder of
the Italian Historical Society of America lifted him out of obscurity. La Corte was instrumental in having
the bridge spanning the entrance to New York Harbor at the narrows and joining Staten Island and
Brooklyn named the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The Italian Historical Society of America was also
responsible for the placement of the Verrazano Monument at Battery Park in New York.
Some years ago I read about another obscure adventurer Francesco Antonio Pigafetta an
Italian Navigator. He was born in Vicenza 1491 and died there in 1535. Pigafetta wrote about his travels,
which are extremely interesting and recommend anyone interested to seek him out and read about him.
He sailed with Magellan around the world and kept a detailed journal of his travel, including description
of the people and languages of the Philippine Island, and he gives an eye witness account for the death of
Magellan. Pigafetta did not come away unscathed in the skirmish with the natives. He was wounded as
were others.
His original account is lost. However, from it he wrote four manuscripts--one in Italian and three
in French. For further information please see http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/magellan.htm.
