again, everybody! As West Tennessee experienceshistoric flooding along the Mississippi River and itstributaries, parts of East Tennessee are still cleaning

up from recent tornadoes. Speaking on behalf of the TTA board and itsmembers, our thoughts and prayers go out to all individuals who havesuffered from this spring’s natural disasters across the Southeast. I can onlyimagine what they are going through right now.

The TTA board met recently in Nashville to prepare for the nextConference and Trade Show in January. With an enormous amount of workfrom the TTA Conference and Trade Show Committee, the speaker lineup isvery close to being completed. As always, the board looks to find ways toincrease your educational and enjoyment experience at the conference.

In this copy of Tennessee Turfgrass, you will find our annual MembershipDirectory. This is a great source to network outside of the Conference and toconnect with industry peers that you may be able to help out and/or use theirexpertise to help you accomplish a goal. have had quite a start to thesummer season. The volatileweather has included very

strong damaging storms and unseasonablywarm temperatures. The combination willmake for some interesting situations for us allas the summer progresses.

Take the time to work through possiblescenarios that could happen with disease,insect control, plant health, etc., so you canbetter prepare yourself for any challenges thatarise. I have always found that when theweather is out of the ordinary, trouble isalways around the corner when it comes tomanaging the turf. Looking at scenarios andsolutions early can help alleviate largerproblems down the road and keep themaintenance costs down.

A good way to help gather information isto network among your peers. Valuableknowledge can be gathered through theexperience of others. And don’t forget, youhave the ability yourself to help others withinour industry by networking and outreaching.Take the time to help whenever you can, as itis part of our core purpose and missionwithin our organization. Techniques andpractices that may seem routine to you maybe a new and innovative way for someoneelse to make positive improvements.

Also keep in mind that we are an evolvingindustry with continuous research andinnovations. The best way to maintain yourvalue as an employee and increase yourprofessional stock is to take advantage of thecontinuous education our organization offers.Make plans to attend our field days wheneverthey are offered to help further your knowledge!

summer, everyone! Last year wasa horrible summer for everyone. Ifthe flood didn’t get you, the heatdid. It still amazes me how quickly

we were able to get back to normal operating mode here atGaylord Springs, and yet I know that there are many people stillstruggling with the aftermath of the flooding. I have been prayingthat this year would be kinder to everyone, both those of us inturfgrass and everyone else. It looks as though the year is shapingup to be challenging. This spring certainly has been changeable,with 20-degree temperature swings in the high in just a day. Theheavy rains and tornadoes have brought damage to many coursesand friends. I can only hope that the summer will be morepredictable and gentle.

I was asked several weeks ago an interesting question: “Whatvalue does being a member of an association bring back to thefacility, and what does it mean to you?” After taking some time tothink about it, I realized that being a member of an associationmakes this job we do much more than “just a job.” I remember thefirst jobs that I had: I went in, did what I was told and took apaycheck home for my efforts.

Being a part of an association, however, made my job of beinga superintendent a profession and a passion. It’s being a part ofsomething bigger than yourself. Being a member gives you accessto other people who have ideas that can solve your problems.Vendors and superintendents are some of the most resourceful andcreative people I know. They never let anything stop them fromproviding a great product for their guests.

Membership also gives you access to education and researchthat are pertinent to your profession and that are easy to find —not only out there on the internet, but right here at home. UT isdoing wonderful work every day for us. Call the UT researchersand ask questions; they are always there to help us.

You also become a part of a big family that cares about thesame things that you do and is going through many of the same

things you are. I was so touched by all the people last year whocame to physically help us recover from the flood and the manypeople who called just to check up on me. Even though we alltechnically are in competition with each other for the same clients,I’ve never known a superintendent who wouldn’t go and helpsomeone that asked for help. I’ve called superintendents in otherparts of the country (or out of the country) that I didn’t know, andthey never hesitated to take the time to answer my questions.

In short, being a part of an association makes you much morevaluable to your facility because you have the knowledge andsupport of everyone out there doing the same job. This “job” ofbeing a superintendent gets under your skin; it becomes a part ofwho you are, a part of your self-identity. I noticed the other day,when I was in a group of new people and we were introducingourselves, they all said, “I work at XYC, and I do ABC.” When weintroduce ourselves, we say, “I am a golf course superintendent,and I work at XYZ.”

All of this mushy stuff leads to one thing. Take advantage ofyour membership. Look at the websites: GCSAA, TGCSA andTTA. There is great information there and links to other greatsites. Read the magazines: the information is timely and up todate. Come to the local TGCSA chapter meetings and the TTAmeeting. Meet the members, talk to them and don’t be awallflower. Network and make relationships. You may not needthem today, but you will tomorrow.

As always, if there is anyway that I can help you, don’t hesitateto ask. And check your Pesticide Points: everyone needs torecertify by October of this year.
