Having consumed lots of water during a car ride

home after a Thanksgiving gathering, I realized I was in

need of a bathroom break. I considered stopping at

the next exit but to save time I drove on another 45

minutes so I could return some items at a big box

store and use the restroom at the same stop.

Arriving at the store, I was more than ready to an-

swer the call of nature. As I rushed from my car to the

store’s entry, I came upon Santa Claus. He was ringing

a bell to encourage donations. My thought, “I am not

ready for this. I will give later.”

Mostly all I could think about was using the rest-

room. I dashed by him and surveyed the situation in

the store. Where was the restroom? I didn’t see it. I

saw the “Returns” counter, and the line was short. So I

went there first, returned my items and asked where

the restrooms were located.

Thankfully, they were right around the corner! I

turned the corner almost sprinting and charged for the

restroom door. Entering the almost empty restroom,

thoughts flew. Why so many sinks and only two stalls?

Why are the stalls clear on the other side of the room?

Aren’t those sort of big feet and odd shoes showing

from beneath the first stall?

I admonished myself for being judgmental and

hurried into the available stall. Moments later I heard

four or five men’s voices. Shocked, I realized I had en-

tered the Men’s Restroom, and all of a sudden it

seemed they were having a convention just outside

my stall!

“Alright, now what?” I searched my brain...

I determined my exit plan— leave the bathroom

stall with no hand washing or eye contact, take a

straight line to the door, and move quickly. As I did so,

some of the men looked my way curiously and

laughed gently. It was a long way to the door! Just as I

reached the threshold, I came face-to-face with Santa

Claus entering the restroom. With a sheepish smile

and a quick hello, I moved past him too.

Heading to the back of the store to pick up a few

items, I tried to piece together my experience. Reflect-

ing on the myriad of clues I misread (urinals—not

sinks, men’s shoes, only two stalls in a mighty big rest-

room). Each could have helped me see I was in the

men’s restroom. And what about Santa Claus? Why

Santa Claus— at the door when I came in the store

and smack in the center of the door as I exited the

restroom?

I had waited too long to use the restroom. My

judgment and discrimination were off. I had hurried

past a chance to give – noting that I would give to

Santa’s cause later (when I wanted) yet never did give.

I had picked “saving time” over my own comfort and

needs. I was so out of balance, I didn’t even recognize

I had walked into a huge men’s restroom with a wall

of urinals.

Sort of silly; yet quite profound—this experience.

My brain and senses had hurriedly and intently

worked to help me find a restroom. But really, I was

spiritually unconscious. I had gotten myself into quite

a selfish state of mind and being.

In his book, The Spiritual Laws of Life, Harold

Klemp speaks of the spiritual law of consciousness:

“To be conscious is to be humble and compas-

sionate in the presence of life. In short, love fills

your being. The ego is out.”

My quick stop at the store held a mirror up for me

to see how unconsciously I live sometimes. My rattled

intensity did little to demonstrate humility, compas-

sion, and love in the presence of life.

I wonder how my experience would have changed

if I had asked from within what is best now, listened

for the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and then aligned with

Spirit to decide when and where to take my bathroom

break. Would I have served life better? Been more lov-

ing in the presence of life?

This humbling experience is a

spiritual gift helping me see how I

shape the moments which become

my life. I’m learning the importance

of placing one’s attention on God and

the Holy Spirit to bring more love to
