The Life of Jesus

Act I Act I Scene 1 Open with Luke as narrator. (Luke is reading from a bible manuscript) Luke: In the beginning was the Word . . . and the Word was with God . . . and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John chapter 1, verses 1, 2 and 14. (Luke looks up from reading his bible manuscript) Luke: Hello, my name is Luke. And I will be guiding you through the biblical record of the life of Jesus. Many have undertaken to preserve a record of all the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the start, it seemed good to me, to write an orderly account for you, so that you can be very sure of all the things you have been taught. (Luke opens the bible and continues to read from it) Luke: In the days of Herod, King of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah. His wife, Elizabeth, was also a descendant of Aaron. Both were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commands blamelessly. But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both quite old. One day, when Zechariah was serving as priest before God, he went into the temple of the Lord to burn incense. Inside the temple, the angel Gabriel, appeared to him. When Zechariah saw him, he was gripped with fear. Gabriel: Have no fear Zechariah. Your prayer has been heard. Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the

wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to tell you this good news. Luke: The promised child that Elizabeth would bear would become known to all of us as John the Baptist. Well, because nothing is impossible with God, it happened just as Gabriel said it would. Zechariah’s wife Elizabeth became pregnant, and for five months, she remained in seclusion. Elizabeth: The Lord has done this for me. In these days he has been gracious, and taken away my disgrace. Act I Scene 2 Luke: Then, when Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy, God sent His angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, who was a descendant of David. The virgin's name . . . was Mary. SONG 1: Angel Angel Sung by the Angel Gabriel, Mary and Joseph. Act I Scene 3 Luke: In those days Caesar Augustus issued an order that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. And everyone went to his own city to register. So, Joseph went out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to Bethlehem . . . the town of David, because Joseph belonged to the house and family of David. He went there to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a baby. And while they were there . . . the time came for the baby to be born. Joseph: Mary, how are you feeling? Mary: Oh Joseph . . . I am so very tired. I really need to lie down. Joseph: I will see if the Innkeeper can find room for us. Innkeeper: Good evening and no . . . I do not have any room for you in my Inn tonight. This census has brought so many people to Bethlehem. I’m so sorry. Joseph: But I am pledged to be married, and my betrothed . . . well . . . she is . . . Innkeeper: This woman is with child, and you have not yet been married? Joseph: Sir . . . if you only knew what has happened you would . . .

Innkeeper: Oh, I know what happened. Sir, I will be gracious to you only because this woman is in obvious labor. You may take rest tonight out in my barn. Now please, I have many paying guests to tend to so if you will excuse me . . . may God be with you. Joseph: And with you also . . . thank you for your kindness. Mary: Oh Joseph, please hurry. I am certain that the baby . . . the baby . . . Joseph. Joseph: Mary . . . here . . . lay down. I will ask God for strength and for comfort. SONG 2: The Savior Is Born Sung by Joseph. Act I Scene 4

Luke: And there were shepherds abiding in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night. An angel of the Lord stood near them, and the glory of the Lord shone all around them, and they were terrified.

Angel 1: Do not be afraid. I bring good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you. You’ll find a baby wrapped in cloths, and lying in a manger.

Shepherd 1: Come, let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing, which the Lord has told us about.

Luke: The shepherds hurried off, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. On the eighth day, after he was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived in the womb. Act I Scene 5 Luke: Every year Jesus’ parents went up to Jerusalem at the Feast of the Passover. When Jesus was twelve, they went to the Feast, according to the tradition. When the Feast was over, while his parents returned home, the boy Jesus stayed in Jerusalem, but his parents were unaware of it. Thinking he was with their group, they went another day’s journey. Then they began seeking him among relatives and friends. When they didn’t find him, they went back to Jerusalem to search for him. And after three days they found him in the temple, sitting amongst the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding, and his answers. Teacher 1: So then, since we are asked by God to hate evil, then our hatred toward Samaritans is justified. For the Samaritans, in their evil ways, have become even as our enemies, and have rejected the perfect place of worship.

Jesus: Excuse me Rabbi. Teacher 1: Yes my son? Jesus: Where is this perfect place of worship? Teacher 1: Why . . . here, in Jerusalem of course. In this temple. What a question. Jesus: So then tell me, please Rabbi. Who is really right with God? The man who worships in the perfect place? Or the man who worships with the perfect heart? (Crowd quietly murmurs) Teacher 2: The perfect heart? What man can have a perfect heart? Jesus: Well, we know it would not be a man that teaches others to hate their own brothers. Teacher 1: Young man, there is a long history here that you could not possibly know about. Teacher 2: We understand. A young boy is not able to hate those that are enemies of God. Jesus: Oh, I am able Rabbi. But I am not willing. Very often the people that are enemies of God are standing right next to me. (Pause) Then, they are my neighbors. I owe them my love. Not my hatred. Teacher 3: How old are you son? Jesus: I’m twelve. Teacher 3: And you would teach us truth? Jesus: Does truth come only from the mouth of (pause) the very old? Teacher 3: No, but only the law holds the answers to your questions. Jesus: Then . . . should we not judge the spoken words of a Rabbi by that same law? Teacher 2: Young man, are you even familiar with our law? Jesus: Uh . . . yes . . . I am . . . (Pause) familiar. May I read from the book of the Law from Moses? Teacher 2: Of course. Now we know for a certainty that we will hear . . . truth. (Jesus reads from the book of Leviticus) Jesus: Do not hate your brother in your heart. Love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. Teacher 1: We understand all that. We know how to love our neighbors. (Pause) But everyone in here knows that the Samaritans, though our brothers . . . have become our enemies. Jesus: Rabbi . . . even if your brother becomes your enemy . . . is he not still . . . your brother? SONG 3: How Does He Know These Things Sung by the crowd of people.

Mary: Son, why have you treated us this way? Your father and I have been searching for you. Jesus: Why did you search for me? Don’t you know I had to be in my Father's house? Act I Scene 6 Luke: But they didn’t understand what he was saying. Jesus then went with them through Galilee and they settled down in their own town of Nazareth where the boy Jesus remained obedient to them. But his mother Mary treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature. And the grace of God was on Him. SONG 4: My Son Your Son Sung by Mary. Act I Scene 7 Luke: In those days, John the Baptist came and preached in the Desert of Judea. John's clothes were made from camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around him. He ate locusts and wild honey. People went out to hear him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. They confessed their sins, and were baptized by John in the Jordan River. John was the one who was described by the prophet Isaiah as a voice of one calling in the desert. John: Prepare ye the way for the Lord. Make His paths straight. You brood of snakes! Who warned you to run from the coming wrath? Produce fruit worthy of repentance. And don’t think you can say, “We have Abraham for our father.” I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is laid at the root of the trees, and every tree that fails to produce good fruit, will be cut down and cast into the fire. Pharisee: If you’re not the Christ, or Elijah, or the Prophet . . . why do you baptize? John: I baptize you with water unto repentance. But among you stands one you don’t know. He comes after me. And I’m not worthy to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. SONG 5: Behold the Lamb Sung by John the Baptist. Jesus: I’m here to be baptized by you. John: I need to be baptized by you . . . and you would come to me? Jesus: Permit this. For by doing this we will fulfill all righteousness. (John baptizes Jesus)

God’s voice: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Act I Scene 8 Luke: Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him . . . SONG 6: The Devil’s In the Wilderness Sung by the angels. Act I Scene 9 Luke: Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. Jesus: The Kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news! (Jesus is walking and sees Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net) Jesus: Come, follow me, and I’ll make you fishers of men. (Then Jesus sees James and John) Jesus: Follow me . . . I’ll make you fishers of men. Luke: They went to Capernaum, and when it was the Sabbath, Jesus entered the synagogue and started teaching. Jesus: You’ve heard it said to the people long ago, “Don’t murder, because murderers will be subject to judgment.” But I say, anyone angry with his brother will be in danger of the judgment. You have heard, “Don’t commit adultery.” But anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. You have heard, “Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I tell you, love your enemies, and pray for your persecutors, so you will be sons of your Father who is in heaven. He makes the sun rise on the evil and the good, and makes it rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, where’s the reward in that? Isn’t that what the tax collectors do? And if you greet just your brothers, what are you doing more than the others? Don’t the Gentiles do the same thing? Therefore . . . I ask you to be perfect . . . just as your heavenly Father is perfect. Luke: All the people were astonished at his teaching, because he taught them with a spirit of authority . . . unlike the teachers of the law. Jesus traveled throughout the whole region, preaching in their synagogues and healing many who had diseases. (A leper meets Jesus on the road) Leper: Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean. Jesus: I am willing. Be clean!

Leper: Oh, thank you Lord, thank you. I am healed, praise God! (Men bring in a paralyzed man on a mat) Jesus: Son, your sins are forgiven. Pharisee 1: Why does this fellow talk like that? Pharisee 2: He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone? Jesus: Which is easier? To say to someone paralyzed, “Your sins are forgiven?” Or would it be easier if I said, “Get up, take your mat and walk?” So that you will know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins . . . I say to you . . . get up . . . take your mat, and walk home. (The man gets up and leaps to his feet, praising God!) Crowd: We’ve never seen anything like this! Luke: Another time Jesus went into the synagogue on the Sabbath, and a man with a withered hand was there. Some of the Pharisees were looking for any reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely . . . to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus: Stand up in front of everyone. Which is lawful on the Sabbath? To do good, or to do evil? To save life, or to kill?" (They remain silent) Jesus: Stretch out your hand. (Jesus heals his hand) (A woman who cannot straighten up approaches Him) Jesus: Woman, I am setting you free from your infirmity. (The woman is healed. She straightens up and starts praising God) Pharisee: There are six days allowed for work. Let her come and be healed on those days . . . but not on the Sabbath. Jesus: You hypocrites! Don’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to water? So then, why shouldn’t this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept tied up for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her? John the Baptist’s disciple: John is in prison. He sent us to ask you if you are the one who was to come . . . or should we expect someone else? Jesus: Go back and tell John, the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. Blessed is the man who doesn’t stumble because of me.

Man in crowd: He even makes the deaf hear . . . and the mute speak. SONG 7: The Miracle of Love Sung by the disciples. Act I Scene 10 (Jesus selects the twelve) Jesus: You are Simon son of John. You will be called Peter. You are Andrew. You are James and John. You will be called the “Son’s of Thunder”. Philip. Bartholomew. Matthew. Thomas. James. Thaddaeus. Simon. Judas. I have chosen you twelve to preach the Kingdom of God and to have authority to drive out demons. I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Whoever confesses me before men, I will also confess him to my Father in heaven. But whoever denies me before men, I will deny him before my Father in heaven. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. John: Lord, who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? Jesus: Jacob, come here please. (Young boy runs up into Jesus’ arms) I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like a little child, you’ll never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Make sure you don’t look down on one of these little ones, because their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father. Peter: Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times? Jesus: I tell you, no . . . not seven times . . . but seventy times, seven times. SONG 8: Blessed Sung by Jesus, the disciples and the crowd. Act I Scene 11 Luke: After Jesus had finished teaching his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee. Jesus: I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and educated, and shown them to little children. Come to me, all of you who are tired and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the trail, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on the rocks, with very little soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were

scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Some seeds fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop of a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was planted. He who has ears, let him hear. (He separates himself to the 12 disciples alone) Peter: Lord, why do you speak to the people in parables? Jesus: The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Listen then to what the parable of the sower means. When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and steals away what was planted in his heart. This is the seed sown along the trail. The one who received the seed that fell on the rocks, is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trials or persecutions come because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of riches choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil, is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was planted. Have you understood all these things? Peter: Yes Lord. SONG 9: Parables Sung by Peter and the disciples. Act I Scene 12 Luke: When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on . . . and coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. Man 1: Where did this man get all this wisdom and these miraculous powers? Man 2: Isn't he the carpenter's son? Man 1: Isn't Mary his mother? And aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Woman 1: Aren't all his sisters with us? Where did this man get His wisdom and power?" Jesus: Only in his hometown, and in his own house is a prophet without honor. I will not do many miracles here because of your lack of faith. Centurion: Lord, my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible pain. Jesus: I will go now to heal him. Centurion: That’s not necessary Lord. SONG 10: Just Say the Word Sung by the Centurion.

Jesus: I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in all of Israel with such great faith. Go! It will be done just as you believed it would. Luke: And the Centurion’s servant was healed that very hour. Pharisee 2: Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you. Jesus: A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But the only sign you’ll get is the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it. Lawyer: Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also. Jesus: And woe to you, you experts in the law, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, but you won’t lift one finger to help them. Be on guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. (The teachers of the law and the Pharisees bring in a woman caught in adultery. They make her stand before the group.) Pharisee 1: Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery. In the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say? (Jesus bends down and starts to write on the ground with his finger.) (When they keep on questioning him, he straightens up and says to them) Jesus: If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first one to throw a stone at her. (Again he stoops down and writes on the ground.) (They begin to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus is left, with the woman still standing there.) (Jesus straightens up and asks her a question) Jesus: Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you? Woman: No one, sir. Jesus: Then neither do I condemn you. Go now . . . and leave your life of sin. (The whole stage goes completely black)

Act I Scene 13 Luke: Jesus went throughout the whole of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the good news of the Kingdom and curing every sort of disease and every sort of infirmity among the people. And the report about him spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all those who were suffering with various diseases and torments, those who were demon-possessed and epileptic and paralyzed, and he cured them. As Jesus went along he saw a man who was born blind. (Stage lights come all the way up) Disciple: Rabbi, who sinned . . . this man or his parents . . . that he was born blind? Jesus: Neither this man nor his parents sinned. This happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. While I am in the world . . . I am the light of the world. SONG 11: Let Me See the Light Sung by the blind man. (Jesus spits on the ground, then takes the mud and rubs it on the blind man’s eyes) Jesus: Go . . . wash in the Pool of Siloam. (The whole stage goes completely black) Act I Scene 14 Luke: So . . . the man went to the Pool of Siloam, washed his eyes, and came home seeing. His neighbors and all those who had watched him begging asked themselves if this could be the same man that used to sit and beg every day. Some claimed that he was. Others said he only looks like the same man . . . but he himself said . . . (Stage lights come all the way up) Blind man: I am the man. Woman 1: How were your eyes opened? Blind man: The man they call Jesus put mud on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed . . . and now . . . I can see! Man 1: Where is this man? Blind man: I don’t know. Pharisee: Tell me again how you received your sight?

Blind man: He put mud on my eyes. And then I washed . . . and now . . . I see! Pharisee: This man cannot be from God, for he did this work on the Sabbath. Man 1: A sinner could not perform such a miracle. What do you say about him? Blind man: He is a prophet. Pharisee: Where are his parents? Parents: We are here. Pharisee: Is this your son? And if he was really born blind, how can he now see? Father of blind man: He’s our son. And he was born blind. But how he can see or who opened his eyes we don’t know. He’s of age, ask him. Pharisee: What did he do? How did he open your eyes? Blind man: I already told you and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too? Pharisees: You are this fellow’s disciple. We are disciples of Moses . . . you have been steeped in sin at birth. How dare you lecture us . . . get out . . . get out of our sight! (The whole stage goes completely black) Luke: The Pharisees had already decided that anyone who claimed that Jesus was the Messiah would be cast out from the synagogue . . . and so that is what they did. Jesus heard that they had thrown him out and so he went to find him, and when he found him he said . . . (Stage lights come all the way up) Jesus: Do you believe in the son of man? Blind man: Who is he sir? Tell me, so I may believe in him. Jesus: You have now seen him. In fact, he is the one speaking with you. Blind man: (Falls to his knees) Lord, I believe. (Pharisees move closer to Jesus) Pharisee 3: Who are you? Jesus: Just what I have been claiming all along. When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be. Man in crowd: Many of us do believe in you Lord. Jesus: If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Pharisee 1: We are Abraham's descendants and we have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we’ll be set free? Pharisee 2: Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are? Jesus: If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day. He saw it, and was glad. Pharisee 1: You are not yet fifty years old . . . and you say you have seen Abraham! Jesus: I tell you the truth . . . before Abraham was born . . . I am! (The Pharisees are now so furious that they pick up stones to stone him, but Jesus hides himself, and slips away.) (The crowd moves to confront the Pharisees) SONG 12: Pharisee Sung by the people. (All stage lights fade to black) Luke: Every day, Jesus was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on to his words. Act I Scene 15 (All stage lights up from black) (Spotlight on Luke) Luke: A Pharisee named Simon invited Jesus to have dinner, so Jesus went to his house and reclined at the table. When a woman who had lived a very sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume. She stood near Jesus’ feet weeping, and wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped his feet with her hair . . . kissed them . . . and poured perfume on them. Simon the Pharisee: If this man were really a prophet, he’d know who is touching him, and what kind of woman she is . . . that she is a sinner. Jesus: Simon, I have something to tell you. Simon the Pharisee: Tell me, teacher. Jesus: Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other just fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both of them. Now . . . which of these men will love him more?

Simon the Pharisee: I suppose the one who had the larger debt canceled. Jesus: You have judged correctly. (Turns toward the woman) Do you see this woman? I came into your house, but you didn’t give me any water for my feet. But she wet my feet with her tears and wiped my feet with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but this woman, has not stopped kissing my feet. You didn’t put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--for she loved much. But those who have been forgiven little . . . love little. (He turns and looks into the woman’s eyes) Jesus: All your sins are forgiven. Guest: Who is this who even forgives sins? Jesus: Your faith has saved you. Go in peace. (The woman, with great joy, rushes from the house. She comes to a secluded area and falls down to pray) SONG 13: I Am Free Sung by the sinful woman.

Act II Act II Scene 1 (The tax collectors and "sinners" are all gathering around Jesus to hear him.) Pharisee: This man welcomes sinners and eats he with them. Jesus: Suppose you have a hundred sheep and you lose one. Don’t you leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until you find it? And when you find it, you joyfully put it on your shoulders and go home. Then you call your friends and neighbors together and say “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.” I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous persons who don’t need to repent. There was a man who had two sons. The younger son said to his father, Younger son: Father, give me my share of the estate. Jesus: So the father divided his property between the sons. Not long after that, the younger son took all his inheritance, went to a distant country and squandered his wealth in wild living. (The father sings the first part of the song Come Home here, but only thru the lyric, “It will cause his heart to grieve.”) Jesus: After he had spent all that he had, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the food that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. (The father sings the next part of the song Come Home here, but only thru the lyric, “Ye who are weary come home.”) Jesus: When he came to his senses, he said . . . Younger son: All of my father’s hired men have food to spare, and I’m starving to death! I’ll go back to my father and say . . . “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am not worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired men.” Jesus: So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him. He ran up to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. Then, the son said to him . . . Younger son: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

Father: Quick! Bring my best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And go kill the fatted calf. We’re going to have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again. He was lost . . . but now he is found. (The father sings the final part of the song Come Home here, beginning with the lyric, “My son was lost to sin, but now I’ll take him in.” The Son then sings the first line to Amazing Grace and the Father sings the last line as they both embrace at the end.) SONG 14: Come Home Sung by the father and the lost son. (Stage lights go to black) Act II Scene 2 Luke: Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. This Mary, whose brother Lazarus was sick, was the same woman who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. So Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus. Servant: Lord, the one you love, Lazarus, is sick. Jesus: His sickness will not end in death. No . . . it is for God's glory, so that God's Son may be glorified through it. Come, let’s go back to Judea. Thomas: But Teacher, a short time ago the Jews tried to stone you, and you want to go back there? Jesus: Are there not twelve hours in a day? The man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world's light. It’s when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light. Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I’m going there to wake him up. Peter: Lord, if he sleeps, then he’ll get better. Jesus: Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I’m glad I was not there, so that you’ll believe. But let’s go to him. Thomas: We’ll go with Him, that we may die with him. (They travel to the tomb of Lazarus) Luke: When he arrived, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. When Jesus saw the people weeping over his friend Lazarus, he was moved with compassion . . . and He wept. Martha: Lord, if you’d been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. But I know that even now, God will give you whatever you ask. Jesus: Your brother will rise again.

Martha: I know he’ll rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus: Martha . . . SONG 15: Life Is In My Hands Sung by Jesus. Jesus: Father, I thank you that you’ve heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they might believe that you sent me. (Jesus speaks now in a loud voice) Jesus: Lazarus . . . come out! (Lazarus comes out) Jesus: Take off his grave clothes and let him go. Luke: Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. Then . . . the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. Act II Scene 3 Priest 1: What are we accomplishing? This man is performing many miraculous signs. If we let this go on, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come in and take away both our place and our nation. Caiaphas the High Priest: You don’t know what you’re talking about! You don’t realize that it’s better that one man dies for the people, rather than the whole nation perish. Priest 1: All I know is . . . He must be stopped! Priest 2: He’s right! Even if people believe Him to be the Messiah or a Prophet, we believe He is worthy of death! (They all rise up in agreement) Joseph of Arimathea: Death? You’re ready to put Him to death? Caiaphas: Tell me Joseph. Is blasphemy not worthy of death? Priest 3: We’ve all heard His speeches against us and our ways. Priest 2: Blasphemy is indeed punishable by death.

Elder 2: And how will we arrest him? Elder 1: If you arrest Jesus during the Feast, there will be a riot. Elder 2: We cannot afford to do this wrong. Priest 3: Then we will arrest Him in secret. When he is away from the people. (The group starts mumbling loudly) Elder 1: We should arrest Him at night. Priest 2: How will we find him at night? Judas: I know how to find him. (Silence) Caiaphas: Who are you sir? Judas: I am Judas Iscariot. I travel with Jesus. Caiaphas: Judas Iscariot? Why would you help us? Judas: Jesus wastes our money on the poor. He expects me to constantly share with others. I don’t even know these people we help. I am tired of all this giving and giving without receiving. What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you? Priest: What would we give a man for helping us . . . bring this blasphemer to justice? Caiaphas: We will pay you 30 pieces of silver if you can deliver this Jesus to us. Judas: I want the 30 pieces now! Priest: You will get your silver when you . . . Caiaphas: Gehazi, give this good man his silver now. (long pause) Judas, how can we get this done in secret? Judas: In two days, we’re eating the Passover together. At evening, after supper, Jesus spends the night at the Mount of Olives, to pray and rest. We often meet him there in an olive grove in the Gethsemane garden. When I can get away from the meal . . . I will come find you . . . and I will take you to where He usually prays. Caiaphas: I cannot go with you myself, but I will send servants and some temple guards. It will be very dark out there. You cannot bring me the wrong man. Judas: Give your guards this signal. You tell them that when I take them to see Jesus; I will greet Him with a kiss. Caiaphas: A kiss? Yes . . . a kiss. Here is your silver. We will see each other again after the Passover, now go . . . go.

Act II Scene 4 Luke: Jesus reminded His disciples that the Passover was now only 2 days away. He told them again that the Son of Man would be handed over to be crucified. But none of them really understood what He was telling them, nor what He was preparing them for. John: Where should we prepare things for you to eat the Passover? Jesus: Thomas and Philip, go into the city to a certain man and tell him, The Teacher says, “My appointed time is near. I will celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.” (Thomas and Philip leave) Andrew: Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings! Jesus: Do you see all these great buildings? Every stone you see will be thrown down. (Jesus is now alone with Peter, James, John and Andrew) Peter: Tell us, when will these things happen? And what signs will tell us these things are being fulfilled? Jesus: Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, “I am he,” and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don’t be alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in different places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. The gospel must first be preached to all nations. I tell you the truth . . . this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son . . . but only the Father. So you be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. So watch! Be ready! SONG 16: Watch Be Ready Sung by the crowd. Act II Scene 5 Luke: It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go back to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God, and would soon return to God; So, he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with

the towel that was wrapped around him. When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. (Jesus is finishing putting on his cloak as He returns to the supper table. He has already washed the feet of His disciples) Jesus: Do you understand what I just did for you? You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I set this example, so you will do the same as I have done for you. But I tell you the truth . . . one of you is going to betray me. (His disciples stare at one another) Peter: (Says to John) Ask him which one he means. John: Lord, who is it? Jesus: It’s the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish. (He dips the bread in the dish and gives it to Judas) Jesus: What you’re about to do . . . do it quickly. (As soon as Judas takes the bread, he goes out) Jesus: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. This is how all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. Peter: Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you. Jesus: Would you really lay down your life for me Peter? The truth is, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times! Don’t let your hearts be troubled. You trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if that wasn’t true, I would’ve told you. I am going back there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place, I’ll come back and take you to be with me, that you can all be where I am. You know the way to the place I’m going. Thomas: Lord, we don't know where you’re going, so how can we know the way? Jesus: I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. Philip: Lord, show us the Father and that’ll be enough for us. Jesus: Don't you know me, Philip, even after I’ve been with you for so long? Anyone who’s seen me, has seen the Father. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father’s in me; or at least believe the evidence of the miracles. I will ask the Father, and he’ll give you another Counselor to be with you forever. The Spirit of truth. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. (Jesus picks up the bread and breaks it) Jesus: (Looking up) Father . . . thank you for this bread. Take and eat. This is my body.

(Then he picks up the cup) Jesus: Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant. It’s poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it brand new with you in my Father's kingdom. SONG 17: This Is How Much I Love Sung by Jesus and the disciples. Act II Scene 6 Luke: Jesus knew of the rejection that was about to take place, even from amongst those that had confessed to be His brothers. These same brothers had publicly vowed that they were willing to die with Him. The agony of all those thoughts and His impending betrayal and torture led Him to seek the comfort He found in pouring out His soul to His Father, in prayer, in one of the most peaceful places on earth. The Garden of Gethsemane. (Jesus says to the 11 disciples) Jesus: Sit down here, while I go over there and pray. (His disciples sit down and Jesus moves away from them.) Jesus: My soul is overwhelmed with sadness to the point of death. (Jesus falls on his face and prays) Jesus: Father, if you’re willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but your will be done. (He gets up and goes back to Peter, James and John) Jesus: Are you all asleep? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!" Judas: Greetings, Rabbi! (Judas kisses Jesus) Jesus: Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss? Am I leading a rebellion that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you didn’t arrest me then. (Then all the disciples desert him and flee) Luke: Those who had arrested Jesus took him to the high priest Caiaphas, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. But Peter was following from a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. But they didn’t find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward. Witness 1: This fellow said, “I’m able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.” Witness 2: Yes, I heard him say that too! High Priest Caiaphas: You refuse to answer? What’s this testimony these men are bringing against you? (Jesus remains silent) High Priest Caiaphas: I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you’re the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus: Yes, it’s as you say. But I say to everyone here: In the future you’ll see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One, and coming on the clouds of heaven. (The high priest tears his own clothes) High Priest Caiaphas: He’s spoken blasphemy! Why do we need more witnesses? Look, now you’ve heard his blasphemy. What do you think? Crowd: He is worthy of death. He should die for this! Kill him. (Then they spit in his face and strike him with their fists) Crowd: (Others slap him) If you’re a prophet, you should know who hit you. Yes, tell us all who hit you (laughing as they hit Jesus) Who hit you? (Peter is watching from a short distance) Woman 1: You were also with Jesus of Galilee. Peter: Woman, I don’t know him. Man 1: You also are one of them. Peter: Man, I am not! Man 2: Surely you are one of them. Your accent gives you away. Peter: I don’t know what you’re talking about! (A rooster crows) (Jesus looks directly at Peter . . . Peter breaks down . . . and runs away weeping)

Act II Scene 7 Luke: Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people decided to put Jesus to death. They bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the Governor. When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was overcome with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins. Judas: I’ve sinned. I’ve betrayed innocent blood. Priest 1: What’s that to us? Priest 2: That's your responsibility. Luke: So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away, and hanged himself . . . (Sound of a dramatic boom for effect immediately after the words, “hanged himself.”) The chief priests picked up the coins and said . . . Priest 1: It is against the law to put this money into the treasury, since it is blood money. Luke: So, they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.” Meanwhile . . . Jesus stood before Pilate the Governor and was asked many questions. Act II Scene 8 Pilate: Have you heard the testimony they’re bringing against you? (Jesus makes no reply) Pilate: Listen to all these accusations. Subverting the nation. Opposing payment of taxes to Caesar. What do you say to all this? (Jesus makes no reply) Pilate: There’s more . . . claiming to be Christ . . . Do you have an answer to all these charges? (Jesus remains silent.) Pilate: What about this one . . . claiming to be King?

(Jesus remains silent. Pilate walks over and leans down close to Jesus) Pilate: Tell me . . . are you the King of the Jews? Jesus: Yes . . . it’s as you say. Pilate: So . . . you do have a voice. Jesus: Is that your own idea, or did others talk to you about me? Pilate: Am I a Jew? Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done? Jesus: My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place. Pilate: You are a king, then! Jesus: You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me. (Pilate pauses as he ponders Jesus’ statement about truth.) Pilate: What is truth? (Pilate shakes his head back and forth in disgust.) Pilate: I know why they want to kill you. They’re envious of you. They hate you. (pause) I don’t like you much myself, but . . . (exhales a sigh) you’ve done nothing worthy of death. I know how to put a stop to this. I’ll give them the murderer Barabbas instead, and then they’ll let you go. (Pilate walks toward stage center to address the waiting crowd outside his quarters.) Pilate: Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? Crowd: Barabbas ! Barabbas! Pilate: What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ? Crowd: Crucify him! Pilate: Why? What crime has he committed? Crowd: Crucify him! Crucify him! Pilate: I am innocent of this man's blood. (Pilate motions for the soldiers to release Barabbas and another soldier leads Jesus away to be crucified)

Luke: Then, the Governor’s soldiers led Jesus away into the Praetorium where they gathered together to mock and abuse him. They put a purple robe on him, then they twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him . . . Soldiers: Hail, king of the Jews! Luke: Repeatedly they struck him on the head with a staff and they spit on him. Falling on their knees, they pretended to pay homage to him. After mocking him, they took off the purple robe. Then they led him out to crucify him. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). It was the third hour when they crucified him. SONG 18: He Gave It All Sung by Joseph of Arimathea and the crowd. Act II Scene 9 Luke: Now there was a man named Joseph who was a member of the Council. He was a good and righteous man, who had not consented to their decision and actions. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea and he was waiting for the kingdom of God. He went to Pilate and asked him for Jesus' body, and Pilate agreed to give it to him. Joseph wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb, and went away. (Chief Priests arrive after Joseph leaves Pilate) Pilate: What do you want from me now? Is there some other innocent man you want crucified? Priest: Sir, we remember that while this man Jesus was still alive, that deceiver said, “After three days I will rise again.” Pilate: Rise from where? The dead? You believe he’s going to rise from the dead? Priest: No, we do not believe this. But that’s what His disciples believe . . . and hope for. Priest: We’re asking you to give the order, and make the tomb he’s in completely secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples might steal his dead body, and then tell the people that he’s raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first. Pilate: You’re right. Alright . . . Centurion! . . . Take your soldiers and make sure that Jesus’ dead body is in that tomb. And then make the tomb secure. I want that tomb completely sealed. Then, post your entire guard around that tomb and have it watched around the hour. If anyone comes near it before the first of the week, arrest them. I’ll pronounce sentence of death on you and your soldiers if these Jesus meddlers are able to steal His body from that tomb. Now go at once! Centurion: Yes sir! (The first few measures of the next song have already started and are building and slowly getting louder in the background)

Act II Scene 10 SONG 19: In the Tomb Sung by the people. Act II Scene 11

SUDDENLY THERE IS HEARD THE SOUND OF A VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE (The lights come up and we see an angel sitting on top of the tomb entrance and the stone has been rolled away. There should be a type of lighting on his clothing that seems to flash, because in the text it says that his appearance was like lightning and his clothes were white as snow. As this scene opens immediately there are two women who rush toward the tomb and stop in front of the tomb startled by the appearance of the angel. Two guards off to the side stand completely stiff and slowly move back in total fear at the sight of the angel. The angel addresses the two women.) Angel: Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, he has risen just as he said. Look, see the place where he was laid. (Both Mary and Mary Magdalene peek into the tomb and see that it is empty) Angel: Go quickly now, tell his disciples, he has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. (The lights fade to black as the spotlight comes up on Luke) Act II Scene 12 Luke: While the women went off to tell the disciples the Lord had risen from the dead, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened. After the chief priests met with the Elders they devised a plan. They gave the soldiers a large sum of money and told them to say, “His disciples came during the night and stole Jesus body away while we were asleep.” They said that if the report got to the Governor, they would satisfy him and keep the guards out of trouble. So, the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day. (The spotlight fades down on Luke and the lights comes up on the disciples gathered together) Mary: We have seen the Lord, he has risen from the dead. Cleopas: He appeared to us on the road to Emmaus . . . and he showed Himself to Simon. Peter: Yes . . . it’s true, I have seen him too.

(The whole crowd is muttering and shaking their heads in disbelief . . .) (Suddenly Jesus appears out from among the crowd and they all look at Him unable to speak) Jesus: Peace be with you. (The crowd is completely startled and they all gasp in shock as if they’re seeing a ghost. They all move away from him as someone in their crowd immediately yells . . .) Disciple: It’s His ghost! Jesus: A ghost? Does a ghost have flesh and bones as I have? Come here . . . touch me and see. This is what I told you while I was still with you. Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms. This is what is written . . . the Messiah will suffer . . . and rise from the dead on the third day. And repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in His name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem. You are my witnesses of all these things . . . SONG 20: The Son Has Risen Sung by the people. Jesus: As the Father has sent me, I am also sending you. Because you’ve seen me, you’ve believed; blessed are all those who have not seen, and yet believe. (The disciples gather closely to touch and speak joyfully to Jesus. As Luke addresses the audience for the last time, Jesus is speaking silently to all His followers and encouraging them as Luke continues to narrate . . .) Luke: Jesus did many more miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing, you may have life in his name. (Jesus speaks His final words out toward the audience just before singing the title song.) Jesus: All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, I want you to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. SONG 21: Heaven To Heaven Sung by Jesus and all the people.
