As we begin a year-long celebration that remembers just how far we’ve come in a half-century, it gives me great pride to share exciting news about our future. Inspiration Begins Here! – The Museum of Flight Campaign – is designed to realize the collections, visitor experience and educational goals of our strategic vision, and has hit a new milestone. As a result of the tremendous generosity of campaign donors to date, more than $57 million has been raised – 74% of our $77 million goal – allowing us to move forward in 2015 on many highly anticipated projects. The single largest item in our campaign budget, and one that addresses needs in each of the three strategic vision areas, is our Covered Airpark project. This structure will be the biggest Museum building and will provide much-needed protection for many of our iconic aircraft. Equally important, the facility will also allow for deeper engagement by all visitors with the planes, while allowing for more robust, sustained educational programming. Dear Museum of Flight friends,

Happy 50th Anniversary to our wonderful institution!

It is with great pride to announce to you that the Board of Trustees has formally approved beginning the project. Steel will be ordered this month, ground will be broken in February, and the entire first

Douglas R. King, President and CEO

The Museum is abuzz with activity, and we hope you will have chance to be part of it in 2015.

A Spark of an Idea

The 787, ZA003, was the third Dreamliner built. It first flew on March 14, 2010. In addition to its role in the flight test and certification program, Boeing flew Number 3 to 23 countries during a global showcase of the 787 called the Dream Tour. On exhibit at the Museum, the airplane’s

interior is partially configured as an airliner and flight test aircraft, with the remaining space devoted to displaying artifacts and information about the development of the 787. You can visit the 787 daily from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm.

A Dreamliner Come True

Launchpad to Learning: A Giant Step in Museum Education On the evening of Nov. 20, the Museum hosted an opening reception and dedication for the Michael & Mary Kay Hallman Spaceflight Academy, an innovative addition to the Charles Simonyi Space Gallery. Guests were treated to a preview of the gallery, which features air rocket launchers, gravity demonstrations and a variety

of space travel-related artifacts, photography, and videos. Attendees included Mike and Mary Kay, their daughters Jennifer and Beck, granddaughters Sarah and Ella, and son-in-law Derek, as well as Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart.

If I didn’t already “work” here, I’d pay to get in. That’s what I often say to describe how I feel about The Museum of Flight. This place is just so exciting to me. Watching it grow and thrive for the past many years, I’ve seen its influence and relevance to the Northwest continue to build, and I am proud to be able to say I am part of it.

I began saving my nickels and dimes for war bond stamps during WWII, thanks to my mother. My folks were the ultimate blue collar couple. Mom

encouraged saving and giving, promising me my efforts would come back tenfold. The money I saved was from doing chores, and later a paper route, twice a week, 242 papers each time. My take was split with my younger sister who delivered 100 of the papers, and not on the hilly parts. These earnings went into war bonds and the Sunday school collection plate.

I always felt an obligation to help others along the same path after I graduated from the University of Washington. My first contributions to The Museum of Flight were sort of forced on me, as a Boeing manager. In those early days of philanthropy the company leaders thought nothing of “requesting” contributions to the projects they encouraged.

Financial contributions at the University scholarship program usually take years to have an impact. At the Museum, I achieve almost instant gratification. My time and knowledge are appreciated, of course. But within a year or two I will be standing in a new building looking up at historically significant artifacts.

I have found great pride working with the dedicated Museum staff at all levels and as my fellowships and partnerships grow, I‘m achieving the retiree’s ultimate goal: a sense of worth and well-being.

My mother was right. I hope my thoughts here today can kick start some other philanthropic motors. A lot of hands and hearts are at work here. Come see for yourself.

Volunteers & Docents Committee After completing personal visits and delivering a mail appeal to more than 800 current and past Museum volunteers, committee efforts are beginning to wrap up. As a result of these endeavors, the Museum has received more than $545,000 in commitments (from 31 donors). On Dec. 3, four committee members traveled to the Restoration Center at Paine Field and spoke on behalf of the Inspiration Begins Here! Campaign to more than 35 volunteers. Several staff, including COO Laurie Haag and Director of Aircraft Collections & Restoration Tom Cathcart, presented at the event. We are planning a celebration in early 2015 to honor volunteers’ contributions to the campaign.

Puget Sound Leaders and Philanthropists Committee Committee members are teaming up with staff to follow up with potential donors, sending them personalized appeal letters, setting up visits with President and CEO Doug King, and walking them through the long-range plan for 2015.

Boeing Committee In recent news, Museum Pathfinder John Roundhill was added to our committee. Committee meetings are held approximately every six weeks and we are still welcoming new members. Commitee members have started organizing personal visits – our goal is to reach out to our first wave of Boeing-related friends by Jan. 31. Staff are developing collateral specific to this group, with the guidance of committee members.

Aerospace Partners Committee Committee members are continuing to reach out to industry leaders, communicating future Museum developments and inviting them to experience the latest exhibits firsthand. Among those we were honored to recently host: Marion Blakey, President and CEO of Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) and Curtis Reusser, President and CEO of Esterline.
