WELCOME
The arrival of summer and hot days brings swifts to the skies of Pinelands and, when it isn't too windy, they often swoop low overhead in pursuit of small flying insects. Swifts are larger than swallows, with sickle-shaped wings and are mainly dark brown and lack the glossy blue sheen that swallows have. Swifts are true masters of flight and glide and spin gracefully through the air. They seldom perch, except to sit on their nests or to roost for the night on their nests, although some species even sleep while on the wing. The Alpine Swift, named because it also occurs in the Alps in Europe, can often be seen in Pinelands and can be recognised by its white chest.

THE NEED FOR SPEEDKeeping up in our increasingly connected and always-on world is an ongoing challenge. With the recent launch of yet another new iPhone 6 model, the Apple Watch, another FIFA Game and a slew of other new technology 'must-haves', it becomes harder to decide which ones are useful and necessary for you, given your limited budget.
Regardless of what you personally decide to upgrade, the one technology which underpins it all is our connection to the internet, the Cloud, the InterWeb or whatever you choose to call it. This technology has come a long way since the days of the dial-up modem (remember that annoying but exciting connection tune). From there we progressed through ADSL, 3G, 4G, LTE to provide the 'pipe' through which our growing data and speed needs flow. To keep up with the world, Pinelands now needs to get Fibre Optic connections directly into our homes and businesses. Help us to get this for our suburb by reading the article on page 8 and adding your support to the Pinelands Fibre initiative.
The Muse magazine has been accepted for membership of the Association of Independent Publishers. With this membership, we also subscribe to the Press Council Code of Conduct, hence the new logos we now carry at the bottom of the page. As we take our distribution very seriously, we are also applying for ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulation) certification to give our advertisers confidence that their message is really getting out to everyone that it should. We hope to have this certification in the next month or two.

Latest statistics, drawn from the Lightstone Property portal, indicate that property prices in both Pinelands and Thornton have doubled in the past 10 years.The average price of a freestanding home in Pinelands now stands at R2.6m compared to the 2005 average of R1.26m. In Thornton the average price of a home is currently R1.3m, whilst in 2005 it was R655 000. Normally, you would expect prices to double every seven years, but during the period under review the worldwide economic crises in 2008 affected the markets negatively for about three years.What does this all mean?If you consider that the inflation rate during this period averaged about 5.5%, property price growth was almost double that of
inflation. It also reminds us that property is not a short term investment. In 2009 the inflation rate was over 6% and the average price came down by about 5% which would have meant a negative growth of 11% - probably a good time to have bought a property.So what can we expect of 2016?We are now at the end of a seven year cycle of price increases and with the slowdown in the economy starting to bite, homeowners can expect prices to escalate in line with our current inflation rate of 5%. The recent improvement in the Rand/Dollar exchange rate also means that interest rates are not likely to increase again this year.Although the number of homes offered for sale in Pinelands and Thornton has increased, these suburbs remain popular with buyers, which will keep the local market relatively bouyant.

Winona Autagavaia has been involved in sport at Pinelands High since Grade 7. During the December holidays, at the end of Grade 8, she decided to take her water polo practices up a notch. An unsuccessful try out for the U14 Western Province Team did not deter Winona who was adamant that she wanted to play for Western Province. She trained hard in Grade 9 and was selected for the U15A Western Province team. The following year she made the U16A team and this year the U19A team. Then Winona was selected for the U17 National team – a dream come true, giving Winona the opportunity to play in Zimbabwe and for South Africa at the Junior
Women's Water Polo 8 Nations EU Cup in Prague. The SA team earned silver medals after beating Switzerland (31-5), Wales (36-2), Ireland (15-4) and Czechoslovakia (11-10). They lost their last match against Slovakia after a penalty shootout. Winona would like to thank everyone who assisted her in her water polo. The biggest influence came from Craig and Sue Torr who were like her water polo parents! Thank you also to Gunther Wucherpfennig and his company Datanomix who were so generous in their sponsorship of the Prague tour.

LEAP SCHOOLS BRING HOPEThe LEAP Science and Maths School Introduction Lunch was hosted by Magica Roma. Guests were greeted at the entrance to the restaurant by talented marimba players from the LEAP School who were clearly enjoying themselves. Inside, the throng of people settled down to hear about the school that was the brainchild of John Gilmour (see Muse May 2013).
John Maytham, MC for the event, opened the afternoon by saying that many people asked him why he remains positive about the future of South Africa. He felt that South Africa, with all its problems, still has pockets of excellence which provide hope for a happy and successful future and that the LEAP Schools strengthen his belief by achieving an average of 93% Grade 12 pass rate, with more than 70% of graduates pursuing tertiary studies. The Leap footprint has now grown to six schools.
A former LEAP scholar, and the speaker for the day, Nyameka Mguzulo, explained how terribly shy she was when she first joined the LEAP School in Pinelands. She has had many challenges to face in her own household - one of which was the fact that
her mother was a schoolchild herself when Nyameka was born. Her grandmother was excited when Nyameka was accepted into the LEAP school and through her she learnt a new style of parenting - in that a child can be seen and heard. Nyameka made new lifestyle choices encouraged by the life orientation classes which she took seriously, adopting a new set of values, leading to increased self worth and a freedom to work hard at her studies. She became the first university graduate in her family and is now studying for her MBA.John Gilmour finished off the presentations, reiterating that teachers have the highest calling in the land and that LEAP aspires to turn out as many high quality teachers as they can. John recognises the huge inequity within our society and that it can take three generations for the pockets of disadvantaged people to become part of the economy. He believes that any child can rise above their situation just given the opportunity to do so. "People don’t accidentally care for each other - they are taught to do so - therefore social development is very important and this emotional journey needs to be part of our education system". LEAP follows a simple code of conduct and the hope

BEAUTIFUL SPRING DAY FOR THE SAPS COMMUNITY FUN DAY
The 19th September was a perfect sunny day for the SAPS Community Fun Day. We were welcomed by the music of the Cannons Creek Marimba band, set amongst the various craft stalls, under the shade of the trees on Juliana Veld. The event was well supported with an obvious increase in the numbers of residents coming to visit, as compared to the turnout last year.Once again SAPS is to be congratulated on bringing the community together with a day packed with entertainment and education on security.Pinewatch demonstrated the efficiency of the cameras that are now in operation - showing how the licence plate recognition cameras can pick out and "read" number plates. The strategically placed cameras are monitored by staff at Pinewatch and there is liaison with SAPS when necessary.Crowds were drawn to the ever popular dog shows including the Western Province Dog Club with a collection of dogs going through their paces on the circuit – a very entertaining and proficient display considering the large crowd distracting the dogs. The police dogs were also put through their paces and took us through a drug detection exercise. The Cape Garrison Artillery Pipes and Drums gave a rousing bagpipe display marching across the field and filling the air
with music for onlookers gathered before a beautiful backdrop of Table Mountain.These are just a couple of the events organised by SAPS, and supported by local schools, Pinelands Neighbourhood Watch, local security companies, the Community Policing Forum, emergency services, crafters, food stalls and Pinelands residents.

PHS again made a good showing in the 2015 Science Expo, with 16 entries judged, 6 receiving bronze medals, 2 receiving silver and 3 awarded gold. Each of the gold medal projects was presented during the recent holidays at the prestigious International Science Fair in Johannesburg. The gold medal awards were won by Tanweer Mohamed & Jordan Turner, with their project on the Effect of petrol stations on pH of surrounding soil; Aalia Bester and Zahraa Schroeder with their project Imagination deficiency; and Huda Abrahams with her project Exploring the impact of salt on the height of bread.

PINELANDS RESIDENTS LOBBY FOR FIBREWith a broad mandate from the Pinelands Ratepayers and Residents Association to investigate the possibility of improvements, Pinelands Fibre, a group of Pinelanders who have resident’s interests at heart and not corporate/financial gain, have already established a website and Facebook page to gauge the interest from the community and service providers. As a fiftieth birthday present Chris Steffen's wife, Tracey, bought him entrance to the 2015 WegRy Bull Run. The stage was set. He bought a 1973 Mercedes Benz 220, fixed the engine, dollied up the exterior and drove the 700 odd kilometres to Vosburg in the Karoo for a few days of motoring fun.
OLD CAR ENTHUSIASTS DRIVE TO VOSBURGChris first heard about the Bull Run from his brother J-D. The event is organised annually by WegRy magazine and was modelled on an idea introduced by the BBC program Top Gear, where the contestants had to buy a banger under a certain value and reach a prescribed destination in the car. The rules for the Bull Run include buying a car which is older than 30 years and spending under R20 000 in purchasing, repairing and making it roadworthy. The car has to be driven to the venue in Vosburg and then the adventures begin. This year there were 120 teams competing, with more than 500 people at the event.
PERFECTING "THE LOOK"Chris spent many evenings getting the car ready for the journey. Some of the repairs were done by a friend at Auto Repair Services, but Chris did his own spray painting and sign writing, including the added extras – such as an old telecommunication aerial from an old American car, attached to
the boot lid with a drain cleaning plunger !
THE INFAMOUS DICTATOREach team had a theme. Chris and his brother were the drivers and the story they will tell you is that they were the security detail for an obnoxious dictator from the Republic of Skelmgeid. The dictator sat in the back seat – a straw puppet with a paper maché head, dressed in a suit... there's more to this story - read on...
BALANCING SPEED, NAVIGATION AND BRAINSAfter the long drive via Sutherland, the group, including the support team Ivan Slabbert and his son Evan in a TATA sponsored bakkie, set up camp. The first day included Rally Events where the trick was not to race and get there in the fastest time. The aim was to cover the route in the stipulated time. If you were too fast or too slow you were penalised. Added to this, each team had to complete a task at the end of each section such as matching sized bolts, changing a car tyre safely, answering quiz questions about the road-worthiness of cars, or – and wait for it – enter a bokdrolspoeg competition!

driving expertise by oversteering, causing the back wheels to loose traction and spin around - all the while keeping control of the car. On tarmac this causes smoky hot rubber burning, but out in the Karoo it produces clouds of red dust – quite phenomenal to see.
MORE POINTS ON THE GRAND PRIX TRACKSThe next challenge covered two drag races, one of which Chris and J-D almost won. The two other events were racing around miniature replicas of the Malaysian Grand Prix and Phakisa circuits. All the points collected during the event are tallied and the winners are awarded automotive gift vouchers or wine.
GOODBYE TO THE DICTATORThe last event held on 'Freedom Square' involved impressing the judges with something different, and this is where the dictator came to the fore – or actually where he came to his end. The story goes that the security detail and all the people of the dictator's land were fed up with him - he had to go! After some manic driving and a gunfight the dictator exploded with a BOOM and his straw structure was burnt to a frazzle. The effigy had been rigged with fireworks and flares which Chris had activated by remote control.
SURVIVING TO THE ENDChris was proud that his car remained in good working order until the end and they could at least drive her back to Cape Town – unlike others who had to watch their vehicles disappear down the road on the back of a flatbed truck. They did the return journey via Calvinia and Ceres, covering many kilometres of dirt road and having to deal with no less than four punctures on the way.
The experience as a whole was enjoyable and one where Chris and his brother were able to connect despite their large age difference. The car is good for another rally and Chris is looking for one to enter; and yes, next year they will be back for the Bull Run.

Remember that a dealer buying a vehicle from you must take this into account when making an offer to you because, when they sell the vehicle again, it has to be in good shape and fully roadworthy, otherwise they could be liable for repairs or refunds. Education worldwide struggles to identify and cater for the needs of gifted children. This was highlighted at the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children in Odense, Denmark in July this year. Giftedness is a result of both genetic and environmental factors, and can be recognised by common traits within an age group, such as being able to process information faster and more effectively, understanding multistep processes and following adult conversation before they would be expected to. Gifted children have a deep fund of knowledge about the world about them, like to do things on their own with little instruction and can sometimes be more emotionally intense and sensitive with an increased empathy for others. They are known to have high activity levels and talk quickly, getting frustrated when others take a while to get to the point. Gifted children can sometimes be diagnosed incorrectly as ADHD or be seen as disruptive because they are bored, or non-communicative because they feel that they do not fit in. There is no sure fire way to determine giftedness – take Albert Einstein for example, who spoke late and only started reading at age seven. Shirley Kokot and Radford House: The unofficial start to the conference was a day for parents of gifted children to learn from some of the ‘greats’ who were attending. South Africa’s own Professor Shirley Kokot, who founded South Africa’s only private school for gifted pupils, known as Radford House, was one of these speakers. It was wonderful meeting these mostly Danish parents and sharing their trials, living in a country which denies giftedness – Danish society doesn’t allow for any children to be taught differently so gifted children also need to be ‘served’ the same educational feeding as every other child in Denmark! It is not only about keeping a clever child busy: Once teachers and parents recognise that their children may be gifted, it follows that educators need to be creative in their approach – understanding the social and emotional needs and helping them to realise their true potential. Rachel Zorman from Jerusalem spoke about giftedness in girls, and living in a world where they are not expected to outshine their male counterparts.Communication development: Teaching gifted children their strengths and
weaknesses allows them to cope with failure and also encourages them to accept that it is cool to be clever. Good communication improves social interaction with other students and family. Projects given to gifted children, such as reading current newspaper articles and starting conversations about them at home, is invaluable in the arena of communication development.Suitable learning environment: Some schools have had success by making use of an open plan classroom area where three classes such as Grades 1, 2 and 3 share a common area, so that those who feel they are more advanced can attend maths, for example, with the higher class and vice versa for those struggling with a topic in their own age group. The classes are also less formal in structure leading to a fun learning experience.The importance of play in education: Playful learning leads to talent development. Providing an atmosphere where the child can exhibit and act on their curiosity leads to increased creativity, and self-confidence. Research has shown that a higher level of engagement with their surroundings comes from having autonomy, having meaningful goals, unbureaucratic rules, flexible challenges, stimulating feedback and concentration. The importance of time management is highlighted as gifted children can be perfectionists and spend a lot of time on one particular project getting it 'just right'. Teaching Perseverance: Can optimism be taught? – yes, and it has been linked to resilience “Grit, perseverance, and self discipline outdoes IQ in predicting success”. Service Learning: Dorothy Sisk, another well known speaker at the conference highlighted the importance of developing spiritual intelligence, identifying core values such as compassion, honesty, fairness, responsibility and respect. Service projects were suggested for the children to complete within their communities – enabling them to understand the relationship between nature and mankind.
Gifted children have the capability of contributing handsomely to society and the community around them so it is worth investing in their education.

Teaching our children how to budget, handle money and save is but a small part of making our children financially astute. Before children can grasp the more technical aspects of finance, there are some underlying principles that are well worth them knowing. Here are ten things we believe all children should understand about money:
1. All parents want their children to be happy, and most parents feel guilty when they are unable to buy their children the things they want. Sometimes this guilt is expressed as anger, although it is normally anger at their own financial situation and not at you. Learn to be sensitive to other people’s financial situations, including that of your parents.
2. Sometimes parents say no to a request because they simply can’t afford it. Other times saying no is actually an act of love that is designed to teach you both the art of delayed gratification and respect for money earned by others.
3. Parents want to love their children with their hearts and not their wallets. No material possession will ever outlast the unconditional love that a parent has for their child. Do not confuse money and love. The one is finite, the other is not.
4. An iPhone 6 will not make you a cool kid. Nor will FIFA 16. There is no easier route to becoming popular and well-liked than by being a nice human being. Kindness costs nothing and has a higher rate of return than any other investment.
5. You will never win the race to keep up with the Joneses. For as long as you live, there will be always be people with more money, bigger houses and fancier cars than you. The frantic competition for newer, bigger, better and faster will keep you imprisoned on a hamster-wheel of fleeting happiness followed by deep-seated disappointment and self-loathing. While you are trapped on this hamster wheel, you deny yourself

This year the Governing Body of Pinelands North Primary School sent me to an international conference in Denmark. I left South Africa on Friday 31 July, bound for Copenhagen on an Emirates flight. Do yourself a favour and fly with them – it is the ideal way to relax after a hectic race to complete travel arrangements. Denmark is a wonderful place to visit, and I think I could live there. Language is not a problem because English is the second language of most Danes and the Afrikaans language comes from the same ‘stem’ as German, Dutch, Danish and Swedish, making written Danish on street signs and on shops quite easy to decipher.
GOOD PUBLIC TRANSPORTVery few Danes have motorcars because they really don’t need them. The roads are planned to include bicycle lanes and there is a very good public transport system of metros (high speed usually underground trains like the underground in London), buses and trains. I bought a Copenhagen Card that allows free travel and entrance into most museums. As a woman on my own, I had no problem day or night – every evening I would find a small café on the pavement to have a meal and at no time did I feel threatened.
VIKINGS, CASTLES AND ROYALTYThe Danish culture is heavily steeped in history and I was surprised at the length of time the country has been in existence.
Their royal family is the longest serving royal family in the world, I think, and their current queen is still revered by her subjects. Many of her palaces are open to the public. The Vikings were the first people who ‘populated’ the country and in the town of Roskilde one can see four of their original ships. I visited Helsingor, the town closest to Sweden, across the water. Kronborg Slot, the castle in Helsingor, is the one featured in the movie, Hamlet.
COLOURFUL WATERFRONTCapetonians would love the Nyhaven – the Copenhagen ‘waterfront’ where you can listen to buskers playing jazz, eat, drink and enjoy the afternoon sun with friends. I was there when a young gentleman arrived with two bodyguards – he turned out to be the new Danish prime minister, interacting with the public!
IDEAS FROM LOCAL SCHOOLSWhile in Copenhagen I visited two amazing schools and came back to South Africa with new ideas for playground equipment and ideas of how to ‘stream’ classes in a much more efficient way.
DISCOVERING ODENSEThe conference week was not all work – the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children conference was held in Odense from 9 – 14 August. See article on page 12. Odense is another town with really beautiful architecture, lots of parks
and gardens, and cobbled streets. Our conference overlapped with a gardening conference and the Odense Flower Festival, where all the shops, churches, community organisations and schools do their bit. Walking around every evening we would find impromptu concerts, ballet concerts, theatre and old crafters working in the main street. I was amazed too by the bee population in Denmark – almost every blossom had at least one bee collecting pollen. See my Facebook album on bees!
HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSENOdense is the birthplace of Carl Nielsen (Danish Musician) and Hans Christian Anderson (Danish author). From the station one can follow some footsteps created in the pavement, from each of the important places associated with Hans Christian Andersen – his school, his first home and a museum created to celebrate his life. It made me think about my childhood fairy stories, making me look for the books my grandmother left me. Other lovely things to do in Odense include: a trip on the river to the zoo, the Den Fynske Landsby which is similar to Kleinplasie in Worcester – all the old buildings have been moved there so you can travel right through architectural time in one place.Denmark is an expensive country to visit, where a hamburger and a beer costs about R300, but two weeks wasn’t enough time - so Denmark is on my list for a revisit...

Multi–instrumentalist, David Watkyns is making his mark on the world of music. He is a songwriter, singer, producer and educator, raised in a home surrounded by musicians. He gained a firm foundation in music and acting at Pinelands High School and with Paula Pursch Theatre Sports. In 2012 David completed his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Trumpet Performance. We catch up with him prior to the release of his solo single from his first solo album being released in 2016.
YOU ARE A FREQUENT PLAYER WITHARNO CARSTENS - HOW DID YOU MEET? In the second year of my music degree at UCT I felt as if I was losing momentum with my music so I took a year off. It was nerve racking but I found opportunities and in 2012 I played trumpet and sang in the opening act before an Arno Carstens performance. As Arno started his performance he said "Can that trumpet guy join me on stage". A week later I was flown to Johannesburg to meet the rest of the band. It was a great time followed by my final year at The South African College of Music.
MAKING WAVES IN VOLVO OCEANS A great leap in David’s career was ignited when he wrote a song for the Ocean Volvo Yacht Race. He won the Making Waves competition with his song Blue which was released in November 2014 and represented the South African leg of the race. The great response to his song gave him enormous confidence. He bagged another award this year at the Africa MELA 2015 Youth Festival in Durban. He was surprised and delighted when he received a MELA award for his contribution to the music industry.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION?I have developed my style from classical music through jazz, to rock, electronic and popular music. Inspirational living and experiencing a life that I am fortunate to
have adds to the source of my music which appears to come from a natural spring which is always flowing, and every so often I capture something that is really me.
WHAT IS THE M:TECH TEACHING PROGRAM?As Director of M:Tech Education (a UK based program), I use my knowledge of various instruments and music production, to teach youngsters aged 7 to 13 years to write their own music. We have set up music stations at eight primary schools in the Western Cape - and allowing the children unfettered creativity, we produce more than 200 original songs annually.
GROUPS YOU'VE SHARED THE STAGE WITH?My main collaboration is between Arno Carstens and Matthew Gold. I have also worked with artists such as Toya DeLazy, Mike Rutherford (Genesis/Mike and the Mechanics UK), Jimmy Dludlu, Judith Sephuma, aKing, Art Matthews, The Plastics, Jack Hardman (UK), Storey (UK) and Chris Cape (UK/SA).
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ACTING CAREERAll credit to Mike Harris and Belinda de Villiers of PHS who helped me to develop a professional and mature outlook to my music and my acting abilities, in a relaxed and fun environment, encompassing an ethic of teamwork. My younger days with Paula Pursch Theatre Sports were followed with my first part in a senior school play in Grade 8. I was cast as the younger version of Don Lockwood in Singing in the Rain. Other plays I acted and sang in were African McBeth (Mambo), Annie and Journey’s End where I played my favourite role as a comedian cook for troops in the trenches. In my matric year I played Will Parker, a young man in love with Ado Annie, in Oklahoma. Since then I have acted in TV
commercials, series and film cameos - in Dominion (USA SYFY TV) and a lead part in British Story (UK Sky Atlantic TV). Analysing his acting success David explains that to do a role effectively one has to be able to show empathy towards others – if you have this ability you are able to translate the acting role into your own portrayal of the character.
YOUR INTERNATIONAL CAREER?I visit the Seychelles about twice a year performing with Matthew Gold (also a PHS past Pupil). In Europe in 2011, the highlight was singing with the Cape Town Youth Choir in Grosse Aula, a concert hall where Mozart used to perform near his home in Austria. You could feel the history in the room. On a Thailand visit with my girlfriend the musicians in the local bar invited me to perform with them and I played a couple of my own songs which went down well. Its always incredible to connect with hundreds of strangers through a common language of music, and I’m grateful for them being a part of my journey.
WHY SO MANY INSTRUMENTS?I like to learn as much as I can about different instruments. My experience with trumpet, piano, synthesiser, guitar, and other instruments gives me the technical knowledge, enabling me to collaborate with musicians effectively. Every instrument is different, so it’s important to be able to speak their ‘instrument's language’.
THOUGHTS ON PINELANDSNo matter how far I go, or how many places I see in my travels, it is always good to come back to Pinelands and see family and friends. The community here is unique and people genuinely care when they ask how you are.

Guests at the Children's Hospital Trust tea held at the Lanzerac Hotel were inspired by speakers Professor David Beatty and author Sindiwe Mgona. The theme of "Heritage, Hope and Healing" complimented the celebration of women's month. Full of history and situated in Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa, the beautiful Lanzerac Hotel, presented a delightful tea followed by a tour of the estate, its gardens, accommodation, restaurants and spa. (see www.lanzerac.co.za or call 021 887 1132). The Trust has a successful track record which started in 1994 to save the hospital from closing its doors. One of the current fund raising projects is for expanding the paediatric ICU. This unit at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital provides care to patients in South Africa and beyond our borders and is unable to cope with the increased patient load.R90 million is required for the upgrade, of which R30 million has been gifted, while R30 million will be provided by the Western Cape Government and the final third is to be collected through appeals to the community.Prof Dave Beatty, a founder of the Children's Hospital Trust, spoke of the generosity of the returning World War soldiers who donated part of their salary to the establishment of a living memorial which is the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. The hospital opened in 1956 and today caters for the medical health needs of more than 260 000 patients a year. Professor Beatty also gave tribute to the late Emeritus Professor Max Klein, recognised internationally, who set up the first ICU for children at this hospital. The keynote guest speaker was Sindiwe Mgona, who related a humorous and
touching tale of her life which fitted in well with the theme for the day. At 23 years old she felt like a has been with three children to support and no formal education. Doing what she needed to do, she took up a domestic worker position and studied her matric through correspondence. Thereafter Sindiwe completed a BA through Unisa, and a Masters degree through Columbia University in Social Sciences. She has now returned to South Africa after working for the United Nations for 22 years. A prolific writer and joint recipient of the Nadine Gordimer award, Sindiwe read one of her poems called "Being" which speaks to the way we live our lives. She believes that Roosevelt was right when he suggested that we should leave the world a better place than when we found it. 1. Place fruit in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Add almonds or oats and blend for a few more minutes.
2. Place ice in tall glasses and pour smoothie into each glass. Thin down with a little water, if preferred. Garnish with mint and a few berries.

Fruit in so many colours, textures and flavours is just one of the things that gets me excited about the spring and summer months. Imagine an ice cold, thick, fruity smoothie in a tall glass to cool you down on a hot summer’s day. Whether you prefer it as a snack or light meal, there are so many choices for delicious combinations, that I could fill this page listing all the options. Start with your favourite colour as a base. If you like it pink, think strawberries and other berries. If yellow is your summer colour, then pineapple or papaya will be the starting point. And if you prefer something in the fashionable coral-orange, then add peaches and more papaya or even a carrot. Stick to seasonal fruit for the best flavour. Most of the fruit doesn’t need peeling, making it quick and easy to prepare. A great tip is to freeze fruit like bananas, mango or berries to have a thick and instantly cold smoothie. Even overripe fruit works well for this purpose.Blend in flavouring components like fresh ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, peanut butter, raw cocoa, mint, lemon rind or granadilla
pulp. Change the consistency to your preference – some don’t like the idea of sipping through a straw and prefer a smoothie almost thick enough to ‘eat’ with a spoon. If you do want to thin it down, liquids like ice water, cold Rooibos tea, yoghurt, milk or even coconut milk could work well. To keep it healthy, avoid fruit juice, which could be high in sugar and ice cream or frozen yoghurt, unless it’s for dessert. Blending nuts or raw oats into a smoothie makes it even thicker and more filling.The most important tool for smoothie-making, is a powerful stick blender, smoothie maker or liquidiser. Some of the latest models can even crush ice cubes, but be very sure that the blades can handle that, otherwise you will not making smoothies any longer. A smoothie is just the answer to enjoy some delicious fruit and veggies raw and they have the added bonus of being healthy, packed with fibre, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. It also fills you up and is the perfect light meal for summer, a snack or even breakfast.
