The 'Unexplored Mansion', adjoining the Little Palace at Knossos, was discovered by Sir Arthur Evans but left undug; hence the name he gave it. The building was excavated between 1967 and 1973 by the British School at Athens under the direction of its then Assistant Director, Mr. M. R. Popham, who with the extensive help of specialists gives a fully illus- trated account of the excavation and its finds.

The Mansion and its contents cover the period from around 1550 to 1200 B.C.., reflect- ing much of the history of the important city of Knossos during the Late Bronze Age.

Most of the finds belong to Late Minoan II, around 1425 B.C., when the building was severely damaged by fire. They include over 200 decorated vases, a full range of storage and kitchen pots, bronze and stone vessels and tools, sealstones, religious figurines, and clay crucibles for bronze working. Being the largest collection of objects of this period, they contri- bute greatly to an understanding of this crucial stage in the Island's history, when it had fallen under the domination of Mycenaean Greece.
