SHEPHERD’S CORNER….JOHN SCHUHKNECHT

And in the end…

Seems like a lot of people are concerned about the outcome of everything except where they will spend eternity. Folks want to know the final score of ballgames, the “bottom line” of the cost of a project or their business’s financial statement, the destination of their trip without concern for the journey and well you get the picture. You’ve probably heard the phrase “the end justifies the means.” Does it really?

Lately you have probably heard the phrase “Eternity Matters.” Maybe you even heard Ken give his sermon on the same topic. Short, but very powerful sermon. But, what else really needs to be said for us to understand that everything that we do has an influence on where we spend eternity? What part of our lives do we think God does not notice? What do we do that absolutely does not have some influence on our eternity or that does not influ-ence how someone else views us as a Christian?

Seems like our society is not concerned about anything but what we do today. There is a lack of concern for eternity. A disregard for God. Do we really believe that eternity matters? In Revelation 1:8 it reads: “I am alpha and omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

Someday we will all, without doubt, know where we will spend eternity. The real ques-tion is does it matter to you?

In His Service, John Schuhknecht

Jonah Resisted

“By the decree of the king and his nobles: …Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from His fierce anger so that we will not per-ish.” Jonah 3: 7a, 8b, 9

Likely, most of you know the story of Jonah. Jonah was a prophet in Israel. One day, God called him to preach to the evil and violent people of Nineveh. He didn’t like that idea so he ran in the opposite direction and got on a boat.

Suddenly, a huge storm threatened to sink the ship. Realizing this was his fault, Jonah told the sailors to toss him overboard. Out of nowhere, he was swallowed by a huge fish and spent the next three days reevaluating his life and deciding to stop running from God. The fish spit him up and Jonah, with his second chance from God, headed toward Nineveh where the entire city responded to God’s message to repent. Everyone was convicted of their sin and begged God for mercy. In the end, God displayed incredible mercy and spared the city.

The power of Jonah’s story is this: No matter how far we run from God, when we reach a point of humbly con-fessing our sins and turn towards God, there is always redemption. Jonah and the people of Nineveh turned their backs on God. They did not deserve a second chance, and yet God responded to them with grace and mercy.

Are you resisting God? Maybe like Jonah, you’re running. Perhaps you’re like the people of Nineveh and you’ve been living your life with no interest in God. The good news is that no matter how far we run or how much we resist; God’s love will always persist. He will continue to reach out to us in hope that we’ll change our mind, our direction and trust in Him, just like Jonah.
