The Many Ways to Tailor Your Custom Printed Folders

Custom printed folders are the perfect packaging to organize documents for storage or distribution.

Depending on the print shop you're working with, standard categories of customization will differ. You

will often have the choice to contact a design specialist and tailor every last detail. For those of us

that prefer the pure "do it yourself" method, the following are common categories of options found on

trusted sites

Size

Most folders are 9x12 inches in size, although it is common to have larger folders to accommodate

legal-sized documents. Other sizes are sometimes used to hold brochures, booklets, or pamphlets that

are also smaller in size.

Variations, especially in sizes larger than 9x14.5 inches, have not yet become popular because standard

file cabinets and drawers are fitted for the 9x12 folders

Paper

Folders are generally made out of sturdier paper than many other printed paper products in

anticipation of everyday use or storage of important business documents.14pt stock gloss cover is a

popular choice in the business world. Pt (point) refers to the thickness of the stock. Although linen and

other types of cover finishes can be used, the gloss creates an elegant look that helps make bri lliant

colours pop even more.

Colour

Full-colour both sides is the preferred choice for most companies. Colour options are often represented

using two numbers separated by a backslash. The four represents full-colour, 1 represents black and

white (or single colour), and 0 represents no printing,

The four comes from the traditional 4-colour CMYK printing.

Coating

Aqueous Coating (AQ) is one of the two most popular coatings. The environmentally friendly, water-

based coating leaves a semi-gloss sheen that complements most designs. Although it adds a layer of

protection, this coating can still be written on with a ballpoint pen.

Ultra Violet Light-Cured (UV) Coating is another popular coating, leaving an attractive, high-gloss

coating on folders.

Turnaround

For custom printed folders, seven days is the standard turnaround, although shorter time frames can be

requested.

Finishing

Pockets are a common finishing option that allows companies to create holders for both printed

documents and business cards. Although most folders have two pockets, some companies will choose a

one-pocket option if they only have a few sheets to organize.

Shrink wrap is also a finishing option offered by many shops to minimize the rubbing that may occur

during shipping. Although this non-us wear and tear is usually inconsequential, an extra bit of insurance

is always helpful to increase the lifespan of heavily used folders.

Quantity

All print shops have standard quantities for printing that minimize the

amount of material waste and optimize operations. The price points at

these volumes will always be more economical than customized

numbers. Although you can elect to specify custom quantity orders,

there are sometimes advantages to ordering a few extra folders.

File setup

Custom folders printing have evolved with computer technology. Today, print shops accept various file

formats, including JPEGs and TIFFs, although PDF is the preferred format.

Design

If you want the full-service custom folders printing options, you can even ask the design team of the

print shop to design your folders for you. This is an attractive option for most young companies that

need help with logo creation.
