A place that brings together religious and secular, Masorti, Reform, and Orthodox, Sephardi and Ashkenazi, even Arabs and Jews – all with a common purpose. We can be different and still unified. We can be distinct and still part of a larger whole. We can be ourselves and still love the other. I am, as always, inspired by her words and vision. In so many ways, we here at Temple Israel can pick up her challenge and continue the pursuit of this loſty goal. A goal which we have seen realized in our midst recently in tragedy. As we have come together across so many lines to mourn the killing of Ezra Schwartz, we also have seen the beauty of a town that cares about one another. A place in which some of these dreams are already coming true. Yet there is much work to be done even here. As long as violent, divisive rhetoric clogs the airways, and as long as fear stalks our homes and nation, we have work to do. As long as we inhabit a world in which innocents like Ezra, or co-workers attending a holiday party in San Bernardino can be annihilated through hate, we must do more than hope. We must be brave and call out inhumanity of all kinds when we see it. And we must work for the balance achieved in Rabbi Elad- Applebaum’s gorgeous metaphor. (You can read her full words of wisdom on our website, tisharon.org/dvar_torah.) One way to prepare ourselves for this work is not simply to dream or pray. Not simply to contemplate the challenges or even the metaphor. It is to seek out allies and teachers who can show us the way. I am so grateful for my friend Tamar’s willingness to honor me by sharing her wisdom here with us. Now it is our turn. I want to ask our community to go to Jerusalem, to Zion, to be part of her holy work there. To be inspired again by this labor, and then to come back to Sharon to continue the struggle. Our congregational trip to Israel this year will not just be a time to enjoy the sights and smells of our ancient land. We will not just taste the oranges straight from the tree. We will bring them home. “Bringing the Journey Home” – August 2-15, 2016. [THE LUACHThe newsletter of Temple Israel of Sharon, a traditional egalitarian community January/February 2016

Rabbi’s MessageAs we joined together on the first night of Hanukkah to celebrate renewal, rededication, and the blessing of our community, something truly special happened. We could all smell the fields of Jaffa. We could touch the orb and taste the explosive sweetness of the Israeli orange. We knew that something magical happened when Rabbi Tamar Elad-Applebaum unveiled for us the hidden wisdom contained in a simple fruit. In its divisions and unity she taught us how the orange models how we – all Jews and all human beings – are interdependent. We are joined together in one humanity, as surely as those slices are contained within the same peel. But just as we are one, our unity depends upon supporting and celebrating the diversity within the human, and Jewish, family. Without the separate and distinct slices, the stronger, healthier future we are intended to realize will never be achieved. Truly, balance is the key to survival.

As Rabbi Tamar Elad-Applebaum transfixed us all with her words we were transported to the challenges, the beauty, the joy, and the urgency of being this kind of Jew – this kind of human being. And she lives this challenge in her own life each day. By building the kehilla (community) she calls simply Zion, she demonstrates that her ambition is to help transform the city, the nation we love into the true center of our people. A place from which Torah, not conflict, will go forth.

In so many ways, we here at Temple Israel can pick up her challenge and continue the pursuit of this lofty goal. A goal which we have seen realized in our midst recently in tragedy. As we have come

together across so many lines to mourn the killing of Ezra Schwartz, we also have seen the beauty of a town that cares about one another. And we must

work for the balance achieved in Rabbi Elad-Applebaum’s gorgeous metaphor. (You can read her full words of wisdom on our website, tisharon.org/dvar_torah.)

One way to prepare ourselves for this work is not simply to dream or pray. Not simply to contemplate the challenges or even the metaphor. It is to seek out allies and teachers who can show us the way. I am so grateful for my friend Tamar’s willingness to honor me by

sharing her wisdom here with us.

Please come to our first trip planning meeting on Sunday, January 31, at 11:00am. tisharon.org/israel2016

LETTERS

President’s MessageLet’s take a minute and play a mini-version of “Final Jeopardy.” The Final Jeopardy answer is, “You must be crazy and you have my sympathies.” The Final Jeopardy question is: “What is the response most people give when meeting a temple president?” If you provided the correct question, you are likely a former temple president! If you guessed incorrectly, don’t worry, but please read the rest of this column.

As I write these words, I have just completed the first six months of my term as your president, and I thought it appropriate to share a bit (not everything!) of what I have learned in that time.

First, and most importantly, I have learned that we have a tremendously strong membership that feels passionately about various aspects of Temple Israel, loves to engage in discussions of those issues, and wants to be involved in shaping the future of our congregation. While those passions and desire for discussions often lead to lengthy meetings or phone calls, I was truly hoping that our members would want to be proactive participants in shaping the future of our shul because staff and lay leaders cannot, and should not, transform an institution by themselves. Any successful transformation of our Temple requires the buy-in of our membership, because our shul belongs to all our members, not to our staff or to our lay leaders.

Second, I have learned that our Temple simply could not function without the countless tasks that are performed each day by every member of our staff. Starting with Rabbi Fish and continuing throughout our staff, we are blessed to have dedicated people working long hours (often under unreasonable timeframes and conflicting demands) to make our shul operate. Stop and think of the number of tasks involved in organizing the High Holydays, or sending out 650 invoices, or making sure that a shiva minyan occurs, or that a Bar/Bat Mitzvah happens. The work we require from our staff is incredible. So…. the next time something does not go “exactly as planned” or there is a hiccup in someone getting back to you, please be understanding. (As an aside, if you ever have extra tickets to a sporting or other event, please consider emailing me and donating them to our Temple. I can quickly determine if one of our staff members can make good use of them.)

Third, I have learned that our community cannot achieve great things without the work of countless volunteers. I am continually amazed at the willingness of our members to give hours of their time to enhancing our community. (At the risk of offending dozens of volunteers who selflessly give of themselves, let me mention a few folks by name.) Our recent rabbinic installation would not have occurred without the hundreds of hours spent by Rhonda Parker and Amy Katz. Our upcoming Purim Schpiel (and It’s Your Party!) would not happen without the leadership roles taken by Sandy and Neil Aronson. Our Young Family Chavurah would not exist without Lisa Einstein’s dedication. Our staff can provide the basics of a Temple on their own, but a partnership with volunteers is needed to make us everything we are and can be.

Fourth, I have learned that we are part of an extraordinary broader community. Like many of you, I attended the funeral for Ezra Schwartz z”l, the Thanksgiving Service organized by the Interfaith Clergy Association of Sharon, and the candlelight vigil held at Lake Massapoag in Ezra’s memory. While the absolute horror of Ezra’s murder permeated each event, I also left the Thanksgiving Service and the candlelight vigil feeling hopeful about the strong relationships that exist in our Town between Jews of all movements and between all the faith traditions. Sharon has a unique opportunity to be a beacon showing all peoples truly dwelling together in harmony.

Lastly, I have learned, based on the four building blocks listed above, that you are not crazy or in need of sympathy if you are the president of Temple Israel. In fact, as president of our community I have the incredible chance to participate in something special: the chance to help lead our congregation into the future. We have all the tools to become a model for suburban Conservative congregations. We can be more than we are, engage more people, and create a more vibrant Jewish community. We can reach “Wonderful Destinations Together”!

We now need to seize the opportunity! It may not come around again.

B’shalom, Ed Hershfield

COMMUNITY

Hertz Nursery School The Hertz community enjoyed a Shabbat Share learning dinner in December. Families gath-ered with favorite things they use to celebrate Shabbat at home. Some were new items; oth-ers had a legacy story. Rabbi Fish and Lisa Kritz led the steps for creating a Shabbat dinner, including brachot (blessings) and singing. Delicious latkes were enjoyed and playing some Hanukkah games highlighted the festive time. A great time was had by all.December highlights Jerusalem and the Holy Temple. We held our annual Expo and Songfest for our Teddy Bear class and parents. The Busy Bees and parents enjoyed their program of “Digging up the Past,” an archaeological experience! Creating family memories is always a fun part of our program.Hertz participated again this year in the “Gifts for Kids” project by adopting two children and fulfilling their holiday wishes. January and February bring winter fun and hopefully outdoor play. March welcomes Purim fun and another Hertz shopping extravaganza! Watch for details.Early bird registration pricing for the fall of 2016 ends January 15. After this date, regular registration fees apply. Hertz students learned how olives become oil for lighting the Hanukkah menorah.

Youth Groups The month of December was a busy one for Sharon USY. We participated in Rabbi Fish’s installation ceremony by helping serve and lighting candles. Later that same week, all the youth groups: Katanim/Kadima (grades 2-5), Jr. USY (grades 6-8), and Sr. USY (grades 9-12), participated in our annual Hanukkah party. We created edible dreidels, watched a Hanukkah movie, ate latkes, and so much more. Our Jr. and Sr. USYers also went bowling (snowtubing had to be postponed due to the unseason-ably warm December), enjoyed our first Schmooze of the year with Temple Israel’s rabbinic intern Ezra Balser, and a few even went to USY’s international convention in Baltimore. Coming up in January, our 9th graders have Freshman Kin-nus and then they will join the rest of NERUSY (New England Region USY) for our annual Turkey dance (moved to Janu-ary). The Sr. USYers also have lounge night, officer’s kinnus and Schmooze. Jr. USY will be joining Katanim/Kadima to go ice skating. Coming up in February, Sr. USY will participate in the

Tikkun Olam Semi-formal dance (always a favorite!). Dates to note in January.

On January 25 we celebrate the holiday of Tu Bishvat, the New Year of the trees. What better time to explore our tradition for insights into what Judaism has to teach us about our relationship with the earth and our responsibil-ity to it. We will dig into traditional and contemporary texts, examining the roots of the Jewish Environmental movement, the role of humans in the world, and the importance of nature in our Jewish lives.Sunday, January 31, the Israel Affairs Committee presents an AIPAC Sharon Community Event with speaker Aaron David Miller. Our book club kicked off in December with a great turnout and over 20 people coming to talk about the first book in our series, Sud-denly, A Knock on the Door, by Etgar Keret. Margie Maidman led an interesting and lively discussion. Join Margie as she leads these upcoming book and film discussions: Dancing Arabs (book discussion), Wednesday, February 10, 7:30-9:00pm. Sayed Kashua, an Israeli-Palestinian, is one of the most celebrated Israeli writers today. Born and raised in Tira, Israel, he later received a scholarship to study in Israeli schools. With a foot in both Arab and Jewish culture and society, and with a liter-ary proficiency in Hebrew, Kashua writes about the difficulties and prejudices he faces trying to be accepted in two worlds, and belonging to neither. A Borrowed Identity (film screening and discussion) Sunday, March 13, 7:15-9:15pm. The screenplay for A Borrowed Identity was written by Sayed Kashua and is based on his autobiographical novel Dancing Arabs and other writ-ings. It is a compelling story of a young Arab-Israeil’s struggle to

find his place in Israeli society. Sunday, February 28, the Adult & Family Education Committee is pleased to hold a screening of the documentary film, Shalom Ireland, about Ireland’s small but remarkable Jewish community. The film chronicles the history of Irish Jewry while celebrating the unique culture created by blending Irish and Jewish tradi-tions. From gun running for the Irish Republican Army dur-ing Ireland’s War of Independence to smuggling fellow Jews escaping from the Holocaust into Palestine, Shalom Ireland tells the untold story of how Irish Jews participated in the creation and development of both Ireland and Israel. The film features Temple Israel member David Briscoe’s father, Joe Briscoe z”l, and uncle Ben. David’s grandfather and uncle were both elected Lord Mayors of Dublin. Producer/director Valerie Lapin Ganley will be coming out from LA to present the film.Be on the lookout for a Sunday morning “Ritual Round-Robin” in January – with instruction stations on having an aliyah; cho-reography of the Amidah, hagbah and gelilah, tallit and tefillin, home dining rituals, and more – in collaboration with Temple Israel’s Ritual Committee!Latte & Learning is a great monthly opportunity to study with Rabbi Fish! Even without the lure of holiday embellishments to the early morning service (latke breakfasts for Hanukkah), Sherm attends regularly, something he has done since the 1980s. In addition to helping to make a minyan so many times, Sherm often serves as shaliach tzibbor (service leader), sets up and cleans up minyan breakfast, and bright-ens the mood of those gathered through his enthusiastic greetings, sharing of kind words, and clever, frequent use of puns. We would love to see you at minyan soon. Join us evenings, Sundays through Thurs-days, at 7:30pm, and Fridays at 6:15pm (when Mah Gadlu and Mishpacha Minyan aren’t meeting). Brotherhood As we ring in 2016, we are gearing up again for more of our favorite programs. The Bob Zeitsiff Memorial Brotherhood Shabbat is scheduled for the weekend of January 8-9. This year we will be trying something new by kicking off the weekend with a Friday night service and dinner. We will be coordinating the evening with Mah Gadlu so that everyone can spend the evening together. Saturday morning we will have our traditional Shabbat service followed by our lavish luncheon. This year’s guest speaker for our service will be Dan Rea from WBZ Radio, speaking on the topic of “Why a Christian should be supportive of Israel.” Saturday night all Brotherhood members and their spouses are invited back to the Temple for an evening of social-izing and, of course, more food.Sunday January 17th begins with the Routes Discussion Series at 10:15am. Please join us as Rabbi Fish continues his discussion about biomedical ethics in Jewish life. The first presentation was a great success and we expect this one to follow suit. At 6:00pm, we will be continuing with our “Heroes” series. This presenta-tion will feature the great Israeli Brigadier General Avigdor Kahalani and be presented by Scott Shikora. Brigadier General Kahalani led a vastly undersized battalion to victory over a much larger Syrian force, which proved to be one of the turning points in the Yom Kippur War.

Saturday, January 30, the Brotherhood will be having its 2nd annual Lift Your Spirits program. With word having gotten out about the wonderful time had by those in attendance last year, we are hoping to reach our limit of 100 attendees. Once again, our own Gary Keimach will lead the evening’s festivities. For those not interested in tasting a bit of the spirits, there will be other indulgences. The main course will feature steak, with a vegetarian alternative. This evening is one not to be missed! On Sunday, February 7, the World Wide Wrap will kick off the day at 8:30am. Please join us for a moving experience as we connect with our fellow brothers and sisters of Dor Hadash in Hungary for the morning minyan. We will also be inviting members from the combined Brotherhood of Temple Beth Am and Temple Beth Emunah. Later in the day, we will gather to cheer on our New England Patriots in the Super Bowl as they play for their 5th championship. Of course, if they are not in the game, we’ll watch the commercials and enjoy the 6-foot subs. It is sure to be a fun night. You should have received a flyer in the mail looking for dona-tions to our annual auction. Please take a moment to help us by making a donation or asking an acquaintance for a donation. Every little bit helps.Achim L’Olam, Stephen Shrago, President

Sisterhood Sisterhood has been busy this fall and we look forward to an even better winter. We started off December with a wonderful trip to the Museum of Fine Arts. The following week we held our annual Hanukah party where we listened to The Copley Cats, an event which everyone enjoyed. The ladies also took a self-defense class in which Newton Police Officers and certified R.A.D. instructors educated all in attendance on realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. But do not despair if you feel you have missed out on anything: we still have many great events ahead! In January we will have Mitzi Weinman come help us organize our lives with lessons from her book, It’s About Time! Transforming Chaos into Calm, A to Z. The book is a wonderful guide written in an easy-to-follow format. We’re sure her wonderful guidelines will help all of us feel less stressed. And don’t forget Sisterhood Shabbat. Come join us on January 30 when we will daven and then enjoy a scrumptious luncheon. All are welcome. Lunch and Learn will be starting its second trimester. Please contact Millie Hoffman for registration material. We have three trimesters during the year and you can join the class at the be-ginning of each trimester. Also, please join us for our monthly general Sisterhood meet-ings, which are held on the first Thursday of the month at Temple Israel and are open to all. Share your ideas, volunteer to

run a program, or help with an event. We are always looking for suggestions and would like to keep Sisterhood lively and excit-ing. We would also like to thank our Pomegranate members for their added support. Hazak Welcome to 2016! I want to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy 2016! Winter is here and the weathermen have said we should reap the benefits of the “El Nino” and have a warmer winter than we had last year – let’s hope they are right. As we go forward, we continue to look for and bring you a potpourri of programs that we anticipate our Hazak members will enjoy.

November was a very busy month as we attended the Boston Jewish Film Festival at Patriot Place on November 9 for the screening of Apples From the Desert, followed by a dessert reception. On Sunday, November 22 we partnered with the Cultural Arts Committee to participate in the Sandra Gamm Concert that featured nationally known Craig Taubman.

December 10 was our musical Hanukkah Party, followed by delicious kugels prepared by Hazak members. As has been our tradition, the Hazak Kugel Cookbook was

updated and it now includes 19 pages of recipes contributed by Hazak members past and present.

During January and February we will again offer our brunch series. On January 10, Gary Hylander will be our guest speaker following our sumptuous brunch. Since 2016 is an election year, Gary will examine the nation’s first “real” presidential election. His topic, 1796: America’s First Presidential Election.

Information for our other programs will be posted on our webpage (http://tisharon.org/hazak) and flyers will be available in a timely manner. I want to thank all Hazak members for your support by coming to meetings, volunteering in the kitchen, making suggestions for programs, and growing the chapter with their friends and relatives. Your enthusiasm continues to make our chapter of Hazak what it is today and what it will continue to be in the future.

As our kids work hard at college and connect with exciting new people and ideas, our mailings remind them that they continue to be an important part of our Temple Israel family. Our pack-ages generate smiles and appreciation as they help our kids remain connected to our wonderful community and beautiful traditions. Once you provide the requested information, we will include your children in our mailings for this year. Deadline for the next mailing is March 1, 2016.

Please notify the office, or send an email to [email protected], if a student’s address changes during the year, or if their study abroad plans change. Please note that we are unable to send packages to students studying abroad due to high postage costs, and that this program is for chil-dren of Temple Israel members only (no grandchildren, sorry).

Donations are always welcome to keep this program viable. Donations should be made to Tem-ple Israel, with a notation to earmark it for Koach. If you have questions, please contact [email protected].

Social Action Temple Israel continues to support Family Table, Greater Boston’s kosher food pantry coordinated by Jewish Family and Children’s Service (JF&CS). We collect donations of tuna, pasta, and other non-perishable foods throughout the year and would appreciate your support. Temple Israel has committed to donat-ing 60 boxes of pasta and 35 cans of tuna to Family Table on a monthly basis. In an exciting development, JF&CS has launched Family Table South in October, 2015. Family Table South is hosted at Temple

Beth Abraham in Canton and will provide a more convenient location for South Area residents to both access the support of the food pantry and volunteer and support the organization. Stay tuned for details on how you can participate in Canton or Waltham. For more information please contact [email protected]. Temple Israel’s Social Action Committee will also be exploring additional social action initiatives for the coming year. If you are interested in helping out or have ideas to pursue, please contact [email protected].

Literacy Team School is in full swing and our tutors are busy helping students to improve their reading and writing skills. This year our tutors are working with first graders.I want to thank Wendy Kranseler for becoming our newest member. If you would like to join our team in this worthwhile endeavor or learn more about the work we do, you can contact me at [email protected] or find out more at tisharon.org/literacy_team_tutors. Myra Adelmann, Co-Team Leader

Job Shiddukh (Matchmaking) Many terrific, hard-working, skilled members of the Temple Israel community are currently job hunting. In an effort to connect job seekers with jobs, we’re setting up this confidential job shiddukh (matchmaking) project. If you own a business, or your place of employment is hiring, please let us know by filling out our online “I Have a Job To Offer” form. And if you are looking for a job, please fill out the online “I Am Looking For a Job” form. Both can be found at tisharon.org/job-shiddukh. If someone is looking for a job in a field that has a job opening, the office staff (your friendly, community shadkhan - matchmaker) will conntect the two people via an introductory email. Otherwise, jobs, names, and contact information will remain confidential. We hope this will help those in our community find interesting, meaningful employment!

COMMUNITY

Schwartz Family We are deeply grateful for all of the love and support we have received from so many people and organizations, locally and globally. Every thoughtful note, every consoling visit from near and far, sometimes very far, every bus full of students, every one of Ezra’s friends who shared a sweet or funny story about him, every tree planted in Israel, every commitment to memorialize Ezra through good deeds or learning, everyone who brought food or who helped or who donated in Ezra’s memory, every per-son who took time from their busy lives, sometimes very busy lives, to offer us condolences, every caring thought and gesture, all of it was meaningful to us and gave us comfort and strength when we needed it most. We can never sufficiently thank all of you, but please know that we appreciated all of it and that you are in our thoughts as we are in yours. In response to various requests, we have decided to establish a memorial fund at the Jewish Communal Fund that we can use to aggregate some of the various donations being made in Ezra’s memory. We will recommend that any donated funds be granted to a chari-table project that will serve as a fitting legacy to Ezra’s life and pursuits, and we have begun the process of identifying what that charity or project will be. For those wishing to donate to the Ezra Schwartz Memorial Fund, you may donate online via credit card at https://secure.jewishcommunalfund.org/ or by sending a check to the Jewish Communal Fund, 575 Madison Ave., Suite 703, New York, NY 10022, and either way, be sure to indicate in the memo portion of your check or in the online

form that the contribution is for the Ezra Schwartz Memorial Fund. The Jewish Communal Fund is a 501(c)(3) charity, and all donations are tax deductible. If you need additional assistance with making donations to the Fund or if you have any ques-tions, you may visit https://www.jcfny.org/choosing-jewish-communal-fund/ways-to-contribute/ or call 212-752-8277 for assistance. In addition, we continue to encourage gifts to the four institutions that we originally identified and that helped to form Ezra into the beautiful young man that he was. They are: The Striar Hebrew Academy of Sharon, MA, The Maimonides School in Brookline, MA, Yeshivat Ashreinu in Bet Shemesh, Israel and Camp Yavneh in Northwood, NH.Looking forward to peaceful times and sharing happy occasions.Gratefully, Ari and Ruth Schwartz

Hessed Caring Community A simple act of Hessed reverberates for the good.Hessed has been busy! We had a fantastic volunteer training on November 1, where new volunteers and returning ones came to learn about the Hessed Committee. We provide support, solace, and hope to congregants and their families during times of ill-ness, loss, or need and celebrate the joyful milestones of birth with them.We are pleased to announce a new initiative: We are looking for volunteers to provide ongoing support for individual members of the community who would benefit from regular contact with the Hessed Community. This will provides regular support to someone with long-term needs and help both the volunteer and the member to develop a relationship. The volunteer would sign up for 3-6 month commitments, with potential for renewal. We envision the time commitment to be 1-3 hours per month. Our Temple Israel Hessed Caring Community not only is interested in looking for new volunteers, but we are also active in reaching out to congregants in need. If you, or someone you

know, would benefit from the Hessed Committee, please reach out to the Temple Israel clergy, office, or the Hessed Committee co-chairs directly. The Hessed Community is active in the following areas:• Bikur cholim (visiting the sick): contacting by telephone and visiting members of our community who are ill or recuperating • Bereavement: calls to offer condolences and assistance • Knit comfort wraps: often delivered to those with long-term illness or other needs • New babies are welcomed with a gift and offers of assistance (in progress) • Honey for the Holidays delivered before Rosh HaShanah to those who experienced a death in the family within the last year • Shabbat Chauffeurs to help shul be accessible to all • Special projects for individual situations

For more information or to join our team, please contact Ariel Serkin or Tova Sperber at [email protected].
