THE LORD’S TABLE(References in the Gospel of Matthew)

• Matthew 26: 26-29 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and

said, Take, eat; this is my body.

And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

it to them: and they all drank of it. And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

• Reference in the Gospel of John – Nil

• John 6: 50-63 This not about the Lord’s table, (The Lord’s Table was not instituted then)

(These verses are more interpreted in the literal meaning;

so they consider taking part in the “Holy Communion” or “the Mass” as a means to have Eternal life)

John 13: 24-27 Deals with the Passover only

• Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

• Acts 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart

• Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread.

• Acts 20:11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.

THE LORD’S TABLE(In Epistles- Only in 1. Corinthians)

• 1 Cor.10: 16-21 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread…….

• But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

THE LORD’S TABLE(The manner to celebrate)

• 1 Corinthians 11:27-32 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

• Revelation 1:9-10 I John, .. was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of

• TRAN-SUBSTANTIATION

(Roman Catholic Doctrine –Est. 831 AD)

Faithful believe the priests ability by holy liturgy to

turn the bread and wine to literal body and blood of Christ; they call “Eucharist” or “Host”

• The priest bow before the “Eucharist”• Priest conducts the “Mass” (Sacrifice)• Priest do in presence or absence of people• Host served, but wine only on special occasions

THE LORD’S TABLE(Practices and teachings)

• THE CON-SUBSTANTIATION

(Lutheran and Anglican teaching –1600 AD)

• Faithful believe not in the literal change to body and blood,

but believe the presence of the Lord in the Bread and wine.

• Bread and wine are emblems only

• No material change nor presence of the Lord

• No means or acts for salvation

• But as public act of Worship, Testimony of oneness of body, fellowship, and his coming again.
