What categories of maritime data are available from Lloyd’s List Intelligence?Lloyd’s List Intelligence is an integrated, relational maritime database. This means you can pick and choose what you need from different categories, rather than having to take large chunks of data that you do not need. We also validate our data to ensure you receive the best possible quality for your analysis. Lloyd’s List Intelligence has a digital archive of data going back to the 1970’s so you can access a unique level of historic data.

What are the delivery options for accessing Lloyd’s List Intelligence data?At Lloyd’s List Intelligence, we know that every organisation is different so we deliver our market-leading maritime data in a way that suits your individual requirements.

Pushed Bespoke Delivery: FTP / SFTP + Email u FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. This is a standard network protocol used to transfer computer files between a

client and server on a computer network. The S in SFTP stands for Secure.

u At Lloyd’s List Intelligence, we take the time to understand your data requirements, generating a bespoke data report in your chosen output format at a frequency that suits you. The files generated are then posted to Lloyd’s List Intelligence’s secure and password-protected FTP site for you to manually or automatically transfer files to your own network or computer.

u In some circumstances, the volume and velocity of data required is small enough that our clients prefer to receive data via email and we are happy to accommodate this.

Query Bespoke Delivery: SOAP API + REST API u API stands for Application Programming Interface. Simply put, this is a software intermediary that allows two

applications to communicate or share information over the internet, which could include websites, databases and computer networks.

u At Lloyd’s List Intelligence, we build a bespoke client interface unique to your organisation that allows you to query our database using your required data field parameters via your computer network or application.

u We offer two types of API service that allow your organisation’s network to interrogate our maritime database.

u Our SOAP API has been serving customers for over a decade and while considered ‘the original API’ it requires significant technology development on the client side and is therefore more expensive for you to implement. Whilst this method has its downside, it can return the more sophisticated queries that some of our clients require.

u By comparison, our new REST API is cheaper to implement on the client side as the technology investment required is minimal in comparison. However, it sometimes returns more data than required, which the end user has to filter.

How do you decide which delivery solution is best for your organisation?

Q1 Are you running a dynamic internal software system that references a generic fleet of vessels?

Q3 Will you be using a data warehouse to store data?

Q5 Do you require a time stamp against data to save for auditing purposes?

Q2 Do you need to recall a wide variety of information on vessels on a ship by ship basis or entities on a company by company basis?

Q4 Do you require historical vessel tracking information from a specific point in time?

YESChoose a DatafeedYour needs may be best fulfilled by a tailored data service, whereby you receive a regular cut of AIS vessel tracking information (at 15 min, 30 min, hourly, 6 hourly, daily intervals) or vessel characteristics and ownership (daily, weekly, monthly) that can be ingested into your system to call upon.

YESChoose a DatafeedIf you’re building / managing a data warehouse solution or relational database, then a tailored data service may suit you best. For this solution we don’t just send data fields, Lloyd’s List Intelligence will also provide audit markers for the ongoing management of data once integrated with your data store.

YESChoose an APIAn API would mean that a query’s search results are returned to you with an IP stamp recognising the data has come from Lloyd’s List Intelligence at a specific point in time, satisfying your auditing purposes.

YESChoose an APIAn API may suit your needs best, whereby you can use basic parameters such as IMO number, vessel name or company name to search for your asset of interest and call back characteristic, ownership or current and historic movement details.

YESChoose an APIAn API might best suit your needs, as the search query parameters allow you to access current and historic records saved every 4 minutes, or AIS sightings that group AIS messages by geographical area, or port callings and passings that document when a vessel’s AIS is detected as stopping and calling in a port, anchorage or offshore terminal.

NOChoose an APIIf your system requires the latest available information at a unique point in time, an API might suit you best.

NOChoose an APIAn API could deliver data to an analyst / user that is thrown away after use. Or you could receive tailored reports in a consumable format e.g. Excel which can be stored for longer if necessary.

NOChoose a DatafeedDatafeed information does not come with an IP time stamp

NOChoose a DatafeedIf you require information on groups of vessels a tailored data service may suit you best

NOChoose a DatafeedYou may want to consider a datafeed as this will give you data over a period of time.

At Lloyd’s List Intelligence, we have decades of experience talking to customers about their maritime data needs and working together to find the best possible delivery mechanism. We will guide you through the process at every stage, but here are some questions that you might want to consider when deciding how best to access Lloyd’s List Intelligence data.

As of December 2017, the Lloyd’s List Intelligence REST API interface can deliver data back against a range of data queries.

You can choose to combine queries listed below, or elements from within different listed queries.

What does the REST API interface allow me to query?

Places

Vessels: operational risk

Vessels: specification, identity

Vessels: movements

Trade finance operations vessel checks

u Query if any ports and places records have been updated within a maximum date range of 5 days

u Query if a vessel(s) is listed under OFAC, EU and HM Treasury sanctions

u Query a vessel(s) last port state control inspection and/or detention, as well as total records historically

u Query a vessel(s) last casualty record, as well as total historical casualty records

u Query if any vessel records have been created or vessel characteristics records have been updated within a maximum date range of 5 days

u Query a vessel(s) basic characteristics, including name, flag, call sign, gross tonnage, dwt, vessel type, breadth, depth and overall length

u Query a vessel(s) detailed characteristics (such as port registry, classification society, freeboard), the vessel history relating to class, P&I club history, and current ownership

u Query a vessel(s) detailed characteristics relating to superstructure, engine and fuel consumption, cargo capacity, construction and/or demolition date

u Query a vessel(s) characteristics, current ownership and six months of port calling and passings records, including details on sanctioned/ high-risk places

u Query a vessel(s) characteristics, current ownership, the last 12 days of port callings and passings, and future ETAs within the next 3 days

u Query a vessel(s) basic characteristics and terrestrial AIS position history in a given date range (Maximum date range is 30 days)

u Query a vessel(s) basic characteristics, current and historic ownership, up to 12 months of port callings, 5 future ETAs, latest AIS message received, and additional voyage information if extra inputs are provided, such as load date and place/country and discharge place and arrival date

u Query a vessel name or IMO number with a specified load date and load place/country. When the identified load movement is in the past, the query returns the next 10 port callings and the first 5 ETAs ahead of the date

If your requirements are for a minimal number of fields to be retrieved from our database, we may only need you to estimate anticipated query volumes per day/week/month to generate your REST API quote. For more complex queries, your account manager will work with you to create a detailed specification of requirements. Your account manager will then work with the Lloyd’s List Intelligence Data Services team to review the scope and effort required to develop your required functionality. This will allow us to generate an accurate quote for your business.

We will be expanding the endpoints available within our REST API in 2018, so please feed back to your account manager any comments or ideas you have for our development plan.

7 9We will finalise the data service and prepare the chosen reports, setting up automated processes (where applicable) and grant access if necessary to the API / SFTP server.

We will provide ongoing support related to the service and any changing needs you may have.

456 The Lloyd’s List Intelligence Data Services team will produce a data sample in your chosen format.

Follow up meetings will be conducted to discuss the sample data and work through any amendments or answer additional questions.

Your account manager will finalise the commercial aspects of the service and agree a delivery date for your initial/final report.

2 3Your account manager will provide you with a cost estimate based on your requirements.

When required the Data Services team will join telephone/face-to-face meetings to discuss the points raised in steps 1 & 2 and ask/answer any additional questions.

1 Your account manager will listen to your data requirements and liaise with the Lloyd’s List Intelligence Data Services team to establish a technical evaluation, based on the requirements.

8 A confirmation email will be sent to you providing the report or details on how to access to the reports. At this point, your service will be live.
