A Note from FrogAsia...

Welcome to our very special issue on the 1BestariNet Teacher Awards 2015. In March, the Ministry of Education with FrogAsia and YTL Foundation put these awards into motion as a celebration of those who teach the children of our nation.

It takes very special sort of people to dedicate their lives to shaping and educating the next generation. We will never stop needing lighthouses on our journey through learning, and we will never forget the people who have helped us shape our world.

Those who teach truly do leave a legacy.

This is why the past two months have been such an adventure. From announcing the awards and receiving over 1,400 nominations from across the country, we have felt a part of the excitement experienced by teachers and students across Malaysia.

For Teachers’ Day, we asked all teachers across this country, Cikgu, who are you? We saw how unique each of you are. Your individual brilliance and courage shine through in all you do. Teachers, no matter who or where you are - whether your school is in the highlands or in the midst of a bustling city - we thank you.

We hope, readers, that you explore the seventh issue of The Lilypad with as much joy and curiosity as we experienced in these past two months.

Students, we believed with you that your teachers in these stories could move mountains; because they could move your hearts and your minds - and they make you believe you can fly. Teachers, you truly deserve the recognition for doing the amazing things you are doing and we’re so excited to share your stories.

Have a wonderful month of June!

Love,

The FrogAsia Family

We want to celebrate our everyday heroes with the 1BestariNet Teacher Awards. It has been a wonderful journey, filled with many great and inspiring stories from all across

Malaysia. These outstanding teachers have dedicated their time to nurturing and educating the next generation.

Presenting, the winners of this year’s

Celebrating OUR EVERYDAY HEROES!

Cikgu Nazira bt Roslee from SK Putrajaya Presint 9(1) receives the Best Collaboration Award. Her efforts have seen her collaborate with many different schools, allowing students to learn without borders. In these sessions she uses Google Hangouts and Hangouts on Air as a platform to reach students from both rural and urban schools, motivating those with little exposure to English to embrace the language. Her effort and dedication to bring her students beyond their classroom is truly inspirational.

Receiving the Most Innovative Teacher Award is Cikgu Marziean Mohd Shapian from SMK Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi. Cikgu Marziean is quick to innovate ways for students to learn effectively through self-learning using Frog. She has also made it a point to transform her school’s co-curricular administrative system through the use of Frog.

“I could say that he is inspirational because he is hardworking, committed and dedicated, but in reality, he is all that and more.

The first thing he taught me when I joined drama is to always accept myself for who I am. Coming from a broken family and raised by my grandmother, I have always felt inadequate and unloved but Mr. Kenneth’s words made me realise my own self worth and how important it is to always love myself first.” - Sharon Dubah, former student

There’s a Chinese saying that the eldest son takes after his parents. Cikgu Kenneth did exactly that by following in the footsteps of his father and mother who were also teachers. Years later, his student and a member of his drama team, Ms Sharon Yvette Lynn Dubah nominated him for the ‘Most Inspiring Teacher Award’.

HIS ACHIEVEMENTS

For the last eleven years, Cikgu Kenneth has been teaching English and Drama in SMK Kota Samarahan. In his seven years of teaching, he has led the school’s drama teams from victory to victory, in both divisional and state level competitions. Altogether, his teams have won four best actor awards, two awards for best script, and three championships.

Through it all, he has written the winning scripts by himself, drawing on classics like Shakespeare for inspiration. It must be noted, though, that Cikgu Kenneth is inspiring beyond the stagework, because his concern for his student’s well-being extends beyond just their drama lessons.

Awarded to the nominated teacher who has inspired his or her students the most.

Although he’s achieved much in his eleven years as a teacher, he dabs his eyes as he tells us stories of the students he’s taught. Once, he saw promise in a young boy from the school he taught in. Realising that he was a hard worker, he gave him a role as a stagehand in his play. Although the boy was industrious, he simply wasn’t interested in school, as he wanted to earn money. Several weeks later, his sister came forward to tell the teachers that she noticed change of heart in the boy. The boy began to look forward to school because he loved going to Cikgu Kenneth’s drama lessons.

Cikgu Kenneth also told the story of a boy who was often bullied in school. The boy would pretend to go to school, but after a few minutes, he would actually walk back home when his mother was had left to work. One day, his mother happened to come home early and caught him playing video games.

When Cikgu Kenneth found out, he immediately felt that it was his duty to confront the class and protect the boy. He stood in front of the boy’s classmates and explained that bullying was something cowards did. His words to the students struck them and they left the boy alone. The boy’s mother then wrote to the school’s principal praising Cikgu Kenneth for his actions. The boy now aspires to become a teacher.

”We overheard him saying that he was thinking of replacing us, the three Form Six students, at the Sarawak state-level drama competition.’

“We were upset and decided to confront him about his decision but we were brought to tears when we heard his reason for doing so. He said that it would be too selfish to jeopardise our studies if he continued to involve us in drama. Being in Upper Six, we only had one shot at STPM. I learned that day what unselfish and unconditional love was all about,” recounted Sharon.

“That changed my perspective, because I never believed I had the

power to change someone’s

perspective in life. I guess we

never should take our own

ability for granted,”

he said when he recounted his stories.

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE FOR HIS STUDENTS4

There was once a time when Cikgu Kenneth considered withdrawing the drama team from a competition His Form Six students were in an exam year, and he had a tough decision to me.

Cikgu Kenneth was truly willing to do whatever it takes for his students to do well in their studies.

I want them to believe in their own ability and I want them to know that whatever you can

“His concern and his willingness to listen to our problems and daily complaints have made us realise just how much he genuinely cares for us.” - Sharon Dubah

“He taught us that life is worth living despite our imperfections and that our past has nothing to do with our future if we have the right attitude and the right mindset. His words helped me and the rest of the drama team realise the importance of seizing opportunities and living each moment to the fullest. Don’t just take my word for it; ask the 105 students who have passed through his drama training for the past seven years, all of whom have graduated and continue to make names for themselves.”

HOW HE INSPIRES5

WHY HE INSPIRES6

Cikgu Kenneth’s efforts extend beyond academic teaching and learning. For each class, he tries to inspire his students to be confident. For students who find learning to be a challenge, he sits with them to patiently explain that an education is how they’re going to reach the goals that they set for themselves. His students respond to him because at a very basic level, Cikgu Kenneth genuinely cares for each student.

“I want my students to learn to want something in life, and to achieve something,” he says. He confesses, that really all he wants at the end of the day. This intention flows through everything that he does, and it has not gone unnoticed.

His former student puts it best, and we leave you with her words.

“As cliché as it may sound, he also taught us unconditional love, by loving us as how a teacher should. His concern and his willingness to listen to our problems and daily complaints have made us realise just how much he genuinely cares for us,” writes Sharon.

HER FAVOURITE HANGOUT SESSION

As many sessions as she has participated in thus far, her favourite collaboration to this day remains as one with her old classroom in SK Pekan Sipitang, Sabah.

The collaboration session is colourful. Cikgu Nazira talks about superheroes and encourages her students to tell her stories that they have created about her superheroes. The students reply her in perfect English.

As the session ends, the students burst into a song that she had taught them years before. She covers her face to hide her tears when they refuse to let her end the session.

BESTCOLLABORATIONAwarded to the nominated teacher who has demonstrated active and creative usage of Google Hangouts or Hangouts on Air as a communication, collaboration, and teaching and learning tool.

This thirst for adventure and trying out new things led Cikgu Nazira to try collaborating with others on the Frog VLE using video chat/ widget. Google Hangouts on Air is a tool that allows users to chat with each other online through their computers. Teachers are also able to record a collaborative classroom for publishing on YouTube, allowing their students to replay it as many times as they want.

“Once, I rode on an all-terrain vehicle, and it actually rolled over with me underneath! I survived only because the steering handle prevented the vehicle from crushing me.”

The Hangouts are great because I get to save up all my videos for my students to watch

in the future.

Google Hangouts are also a great opportunity for teachers to collaborate with teachers from other schools, industry experts and more. Her students especially love it when there are guest teachers.

“They are more motivated and curious about what they can learn on their own, rather than only receiving it from me. They understand that they can learn anything from anywhere. It’s one of the reasons why Google Hangouts has made such an impact on my students.”

A GREAT TOOL FOR COLLABORATION2

“I want my students to be self-motivated to learn.”

“Hi!” she greets them warmly. “Do you know where Putrajaya is?” The students yell, “Kuala Lumpur” in a sing-song voice - and that makes her laugh, as though she was in the same class they are.

Eventually, Cikgu Nazira realised that her own students had a challenge: they understood what was being taught in class, but they were not able to put it into writing or present it to someone.

HOW SHE RUNS HER COLLABORATIVE SESSIONS FOR STUDENTS

Cikgu Nazira is sought after by teachers from other schools to run collaborations with their students. When Cikgu Nazira greets them; her enthusiasm for learning is infectious, and she uses her background as an English teacher to help students from across the country learn the language.

The students she is chatting with are from a remote school called SK Runchang in Pahang. Within minutes, she is telling them a story: “The Three Billy Goats’ Gruff”. Then asks questions about the story she has told, and the students excitedly yell back answers in English. She cheers them on.

An opportunity arose when she met Ms Hafiza, a lecturer of Language and Social Sciences at Universiti Tenaga Nasional, at an EduNation community meeting. Cikgu Nazira soon found out that she was able teach her students visual thinking techniques to help them express their ideas.

During her collaboration with Ms Hafiza, her students used the Google Draw widget on the Frog VLE and were able to learn techniques for communicating what their ideas were. As a result, her students are now better at using Google Draw and love the idea of creating and sharing pictures in group work.

These days, parents often tell Cikgu Nazira how surprised they are that their children now speak English.

HOW SHE RUN HER COLLABORATIVE

SESSIONS FOR TEACHERS

CIKGU NAZIRA ON USING FROG IN CLASS

Her experience with Google Hangouts and Hangouts on Air has allowed Cikgu Nazira to run these sessions for .teachers as well, introducing them to Apps and some new tools that were recommended by the Ministry of Education.

Cikgu Nazira especially thinks that technology like Frog is the way to go for education and assigns her students homework using Frog, and uses quizzes during class time.

She has also introduced parents to Frog, showing them its many features. Parents at home are often amazed how fast they were able to get feedback from the quizzes that their children were doing - all from their laptops and PCs. They could also get important school information from the school’s Site on the Frog VLE.

In a collaboration with District Education Office of Barat Daya Pulau Pinang, she shows other teachers via Hangouts how apps on Google Play can help them enhance teaching in their own classrooms.

“I love how they manage to do all these collaborations by themselves now. They have now finally realised that it is not that hard to do. All they need is a laptop, a proper plan and an internet connection.”

They were impressed at how things have changed and how

much the Ministry of Education and FrogAsia has done to help with

learning.

The session continues, and Cikgu Nazira takes time to demonstrate apps like ABC Alphabet Phonics, Quizlet and Class Dojo on her digital tablet. She has also taught other classes using Frog VLE Apps like I-Think, Google Draw, Google Docs and Google Slides.

Thanks to her, now other teachers are running collaborations of their own.

Cikgu Marziean’s students have many nicknames for her, but she notes that one of her favourites is ‘Tiger’, because of her strict approach in class. However, her students also call her ‘mama’ because of how much she looks out for them. Cikgu Marziean is one of SMK Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi’s Frog Admins, and the winner of Most Innovative Teacher for the 1BestariNet Teacher Awards.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS1

Her accomplishments as the school’s Frog Admin are outstanding. In fact, the school’s 15 Frog Champion teachers have all been trained by her. What is even more impressive is that these Frog Champion Teachers do not always directly instruct students how to use the Frog VLE. It is the students who are inspired to teach their classmates how to use Frog. These students, called Frog Champions, are personally mentored by Cikgu Marziean.

More importantly, her efforts to innovate, and teach lessons creatively using Frog Sites and technology has made SMK Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi one of the region’s most active schools in Frog VLE usage. She assisted in the creation more than 150 personal dashboards on Frog for the use of teachers in her school and the school itself has created no fewer than 1400 sites over the past three years.

Cikgu Marziean also felt that her students simply waited for information to come to them. It wasn’t their fault, it was just the conventional way they were normally taught. Not settling for the status quo, she searched for innovative ways to grow self-motivated attitudes and critical thinking skills in her students.

She then selected a complicated topic like computer components for both her Form 4 and Form 5’s ICT classes. For her lessons, she uploaded class resources onto Frog Sites and functioned as a mentor during class time and encouraged her students to learn using information from these Frog Sites instead.

Student soon found that they had to learn by asking the right questions and seeking out answers themselves. To get answers to questions, they analysed videos, pictures and mind maps on the Frog VLE Site that she created earlier on.

The lessons did not end there, her students also had to discuss their findings with other teams, by sharing their conclusions and gleaning more knowledge through their discussions.

The class was a huge success, with students learning complex topics by themselves - proving that self-motivated learning was highly effective, even for difficult subjects. She called her method ‘Self Learning Access’.

Her accomplishments as a Frog Admin at the school are outstanding. In fact, the school’s 15 Frog Champion teachers have all been trained by her. What is even more impressive is that these Frog Champion Teachers do not always directly instruct students how to use the Frog VLE. It is the students who teach their classmates how to use Frog. These students, also called Frog Champions, are personally mentored by Cikgu Marziean.

More importantly, her efforts to innovate, and teach lessons creatively using Frog Sites and technology has made SMK Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi one of the region’s highest performing schools for the Frog VLE use. This means that the students in her school are actively using Frog as a tool for learning.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

INSPIRING SELF MOTIVATED STUDENTS3

Transforming the school did not come without its fair share of challenges, but Cikgu Marziean and Cikgu Salwa Hanim - the school’s Frog Admins, have worked tirelessly in the past three years. One of the greatest challenges was encouraging the school’s teachers to begin using the Frog VLE.

In the first year, only a few teachers joined the project, but she was undeterred. Every month, Cikgu Marziean holds Frog classes for selected teachers. As time went by, more experienced teachers began to help her with these sessions.

Cikgu Marziean says that she did not force teachers to use Frog, but as she began to introduce teachers to Frog’s features, she found that they became more confident in the use of Frog and she eventually won them over.

Cikgu Marziean also felt that her students simply waited for information to come to them. It wasn’t their fault, it was just the conventional way they were normally taught. Not settling for the status quo, she searched for innovative ways to grow self-motivated attitudes and critical thinking skills in her students.

Cikgu Marziean selected a complicated topic from the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) syllabus for both her Form 4 and Form 5 classes. For lessons surrounding motherboards, which are the main printed circuit boards found in computers, she uploaded lesson resources onto Frog VLE Sites

“Students often changed school clubs, because they were unsure of which club to join. Teachers couldn’t track the changes in student’s memberships.”

INNOVATING HER

SCHOOL’S ADMINISTRATION4

Beyond training teachers and teaching students, Cikgu Marziean saw an opportunity to innovate the way her school organised information, especially in the area of co-curricular activities.

All this caused confusion resulting in mistakes in the school’s records. Realising this, she created a Site on the Frog VLE that allows students to register for clubs online using Google Forms. The updated information from these forms are automatically sent to the co-curriculum teacher, saving time and ensuring that teachers always have the most up-to-date information. She called the Site ‘SMARTCO’

Directing students to self-learn using Sites on the Frog VLE was a huge success. Students were learning complex topics by themselves - proving that self-motivated learning is highly effective, even for difficult subjects. Cikgu Marziean refers to this method as ‘Self Learning Access’.

Instead of conventionally instructing the class, she functioned as a mentor. She encouraged her students to learn directly from the information on these Frog VLE Sites by asking the right questions and seeking out answers themselves. To get answers to these questions, they analysed videos, pictures and mind maps on the Frog VLE Sites that Cikgu Marziean had created earlier on.

The lessons did not end there. Students also had to discuss their findings with other teams by sharing their conclusions and gleaning more knowledge through these discussions.

“Students often changed school clubs, because they were unsure of which club to join. Teachers couldn’t track the changes in student’s memberships.”

“All teachers found this so convenient, because all they had to do was mark off attendance lists based on the names from SMARTCO.”

The students are 21st Century Learners. They don’t expect

to be spoon fed answers. It’s time for them to be exposed to

self-learning access.

If they aren’t, they will be forced to rely on others to solve problems.

“I’m planning a ChromeLab Cafe for a computer lab, but it’s still in its planning stages.

We’ll include large tables for collaboration and spaces where students can work on activities together, using the school’s Chromebooks.”

“I love it when what I do benefits both students and teacher. This isn’t for myself, it’s so that the school’s teachers and students can enjoy the benefits. I feel happy when my school goes from success to success because it motivates them to use technology positively,” she says.

FROM FLASH MEMORY TO CLOUD MEMORY

She also sensed that something could be done to combat computer viruses that were causing the loss of files and incurred further cost to the school for computer repairs.

She noted that these viruses were often carried in flash drives that students used to store their work and she instructed them to use cloud storage on the Frog VLE instead. Immediately, the number of computers infected by viruses dropped, saving the school both time and money.

Cikgu Marziean already has plans cooking for the future.

As the school which submitted the highest number of quality nominations, they have been awarded the FrogStar School Award. As such, Cikgu Marziean has big plans to fully adapt 21st Century Learning ideas to her school’s classes when the new Frog Classroom Makeover is completed.

What pushes herself to transform her school is how much she enjoys the adventure of breaking boundaries in learning.

All computer keyboards have been glued down to the table so that they remain in place after class. During his presentation, he speaks quickly while pointing to the meticulous Google Slides presentation that he has made, but slows down to explain technical details. He stops to take questions, and then thoughtfully provides his thoughts and solutions. It is no wonder he is an excellent trainer.

A DIFFICULT CHILDHOOD2

Achieving all of this has been part of a long journeyfor Cikgu Ruzaimie. When he was younger, speakingin public was difficult for him. In fact, he was often bullied as a child. However, when he started to teach, he felt a great responsibility to break barriers between teacher and student, and to share knowledge with other educators. He pushed himself to learn how to connect with others finding guidance from school’s student counsellor. Now, he speaks in public easily. His passion is continually fuelled by the desire to empower others.

“My perspective grew when I actively shared knowledge with other teachers. This inspired me to keep becoming a better person. I wanted to share every positive thing that I learnt with other teachers.”

It isn’t just Cikgu Ruzaimie’s own school that is receiving accolades because of his guidance. Schools in surrounding areas have improved markedly in their usage of the Frog VLE because of his dynamic efforts. SMK Taman Jasmin 2, a school whose teachers he trained, went from having almost no usage of among students, to being one of Selangor’s top 20 active schools in Frog usage.

Cikgu Norhiza Nasirin says that before Cikgu Ruzaimie began guiding her school, student logins for Frog were down to eight in December 2014. After he showed her how to implement Frog in her school, the numbers rose to 1011 student logins in April 2015. She was so inspired that she wanted to continue incorporating SK Leftenan Adnan’s best practices in SMK Taman Jasmin 2.

SMK Taman Jasmin 2, a school that he’s taught in, went from having almost zero usage of Frog among students to being one of Selangor’s top 20 active Frog users. Another school, went from zero percent of student logins to achieving around eighty percent of student logins on Frog in the space of a few months under his mentorship.

Other teachers have also mentioned how Cikgu Ruzaimie has benefited their school, Cikgu Norhiza Nasirin says that before Cikgu Ruzaimie began guiding her school, student logins for Frog was down to 10 student logins a day. After he showed her how to implement Frog in her school, the numbers rose to as high as 200 student logins a day. She was so inspired that she wanted to incorporate SK Leftenan’s success in her own school.

RECOGNISING PROBLEMS AND SOLVING THEM

4

CIKGU RUZAIMIE’S EARLY EXPERIENCE3

SK Leftenan Adnan

Cikgu Ruzaimie did not give up.

“I can say that I’m a problem solver,

I’ll accept all problems. I’ll look for

solutions.”

He realised that the method of training teachers in large groups did not work as he wanted it to; so he started dividing up teachers into smaller groups, and planned his training time around their schedules. Each week, he spends his time with neighbouring schools that he is mentoring so that each school gets training time with him. These training sessions are regular, and focuses on planned learning outcomes.

He also realised that every school has different needs. Although primary schools like his own had their own challenges and opportunities; implementation was more complex for the Frog VLE at the secondary school level. Cikgu Ruzaimie continues to take the time to understand the dynamics between the school’s principal, teachers, students and parents. He then compiles their problems and engages each issue.

With that, he began his work training teachers in the use of Frog. When he first started his training, he would begin with a workshop that involved a large number of teachers. That way he could train many teachers quickly.

But soon, the problems became obvious - teachers simply were not adopting the technology, and many of them were unable to retain the knowledge of how to use the technology soon after his training.

He pushed on. Realising that the method of training teachers in large groups did not work as well as he wanted it to; he started dividing teachers up into smaller groups, and planned his training time around their schedules.

Now, he spends a certain amount of time each week with the neighbouring schools that he mentors - planning it so that each school gets training slots. These training sessions are regular, and focuses on planned learning outcomes.

GRADING SYSTEMS5

“I run an analysis to determine the proficiency level of each teacher. Once I’ve applied a ranking of 1 to 10, I decide on how to proceed. It makes training and empowering each teacher easier because I ge t to understand their strengths and weaknesses.”

SK Leftenan Adnan

Cikgu Ruzaimie has even created a grading system that he utilises to assess each teacher’s proficiency in Frog.

“My dream is so that everyone can see how good the Malaysia Education Blueprint is. How do we realise that education plan? I know the way. It’s through the Frog VLE. Teachers will definitely teach with excellence and create a higher standard of quality in education. I am confident and sure of this. I won’t stop here, I’ll push on until all of us can impact our children’s in the futures.

TEACHING THROUGHCOMMUNITY

6

After his training sessions, he builds a community around the teachers that he has taught. Using communication apps for mobile phones like WhatsApp and Telegram, he checks on them to see how they are doing - genuinely curious about their growth. The teachers have found this incredibly useful, and often ask him questions, or seek help with issues in their school.

Cikgu Ruzaimie has even created a grading system that he assigns to each teacher, to mark their proficiency at Frog.

When Cikgu Ruzaimie enters a room of laughing children, they are comfortable around him and they giggle with each other. He calls them to attention, and immediately, the children form straight lines in front of him, and march obediently towards the stage for a quick photo session. Some of his students still smile at him. He has got big plans for the future.

Hi Cikgu! How do you use Frog in class?

Each week, I create two new Sites and encourage students to submit their homework via Google Drive. It is faster than using a thumb drive and having to print out their homework. If I have to attend meetings or seminars, I definitely give homework and notes to my students using Sites.

Any future plans involving the use of Frog and technology?

I really would like to utilize Google Hangouts more. I want my students to be able to explore the world outside their classroom. If possible, I want to conduct sessions with other schools and let my students share their opinions with other students and teachers. It would be nice if we could conduct a Hangout on “Teknik Menjawab Soalan Peperiksaan”.

It is greater than the sum of its parts; a vibrant, progressive school that both teachers and students are proud to call their own. SMK Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi has gone the distance in the use of technology in education.

This school has a unique source of energy - a group of teachers who work together to provide the best for the students under their care. Hi Cikgu! Can you tell us why you chose to be a teacher and what makes a great teacher?

I really love being a teacher and it is my passion. To me, a good educator should always be sincere and honest. Teachers not only need to make sure students understand what we have taught them, but must work to instill good values in them.

Do you feel more motivated to teach after your school won the 1BestariNet FrogStar award?

Especially as this recognition comes solely from students, I do feel more appreciated and motivated to teach to the very best of my abilities. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank FrogAsia for making the effort to recognize teachers across the nation.

Hi Cikgu Chelvi! Can you tell us how you have been using Frog in class?

Usually, I would post recordings of poem recital videos from the Internet. I also share literature questions on my Site and students are required to answer the questions within the Site itself.

How did you feel when you found out that your school won the Frog Classroom Makeover?

I felt honoured and appreciated. I have been teaching for almost 30 years and this is the first time I have received such recognition. This award will definitely motivate me to teach better in the future.

What are your future plans and hopes for the use of technology in class?

I hope teachers are able to use Chromebooks fully, and students no longer need to bring textbooks and exercise books to school. As a Bahasa Malaysia teacher, we need to use a lot of exercise books and it is not convenient anymore, especially now that we have 21st century learning.

I hope teachers are able to use Chromebooks fully, and students no longer need to bring textbooks and exercise books to school. As a Bahasa Malaysia teacher, we need to use a lot of exercise books and it is not convenient anymore, especially now that we have 21st century learning.

What are some of the changes you have seen in your teaching after using Frog?

Before I was introduced to Frog, I was not tech-savvy at all! I rarely used the computer and ICT seemed so foreign to me. By using Frog, I gained new knowledge and I learned a lot about technology. I teach Music, and Frog has definitely helped me to attract more attention from my students. I’ve included a lot of visuals and audio recordings from YouTube in my lessons and students are now much more interested to learn Music.

How important do you feel such recognition is for teachers?

These awards are very important because this represents what students feel about their teachers. Their appreciation is honest and they are not influenced by anyone.

How has Frog helped you in teaching?

It helps me a lot as I no longer need to mark exercise books individually. Frog has an auto-marking system and it enables me to give feedback and remarks on student’s homework. By doing this, students do not have to wait for me to see them individually to receive feedback.

What are some of the changes you have seen in your teaching after using Frog?

Before using Frog, I had limited resources with which to engage my students. I teach Mathematics - and the resources from textbooks can be very limited. Now, I am able to search for interesting examples of Maths questions on the Internet which helps students relate to the topic better. Furthermore, Frog’s layout is vibrant and attractive, and this certainly encourages students to learn more.

How do you use Frog in your class?

I use Frog to teach Mathematics for my Form 1 classes. Usually, I assign homework via Frog and include notes in the Sites that I have created for them. I would also insert related videos to engage the students more.

How do you teach Chemistry using Frog?

For my Form 5 students, I create Sites on every topic. I ask them to do their homework on Frog and they can read my comments there. In class, I use Google Slides to teach my students. I would also download past year questions from the FrogStore and share these with my students using Sites. It is really very convenient and it saves a lot of time. I do not have to photocopy the questions and look for past years question books at the bookstore.

What are some of the changes you have seen in your teaching after using Frog?

Teaching and learning is easier and much smoother now that we have started using Frog. I am able to compile a lot of resources from the Internet in one place and students can easily find it because Frog incorporates a cloud-based system. This year, I will be taking up ICT as a new subject to teach because I am really interested in exploring technology and Frog.

How important do you feel such recognition is for teachers?

The 1BestariNet Teacher Awards motivate us to strive more and be a better teacher. We are more encouraged to not only use Frog fully in our class, but also to incorporate technology in all aspects of teaching and learning so that our students are better equipped to cope with the challenges in the 21st century learning environment.

Can you share with us why do you think technology should be implemented in classrooms?

Students are more excited to learn if we use audio and visual. For example a Bahasa Malaysia teacher can use videos of poem recitals instead of just reading poems from the textbook. These students were born in a technological era and most of them are gadget users. It is time we transform our method of teaching to cater to our students’ needs.
