Mama J’s sisters

Jaine Rist (aka Mama J) would like to introduce you to her ‘Sisters’ They were born while she was working on her

‘Genesis awakening’ exhibition held at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in 2013. At a critical point she

needed a specific shape to fill the kiln around her vessels so she borrowed the shape and concept of the tradi-

tional beaded dolls to make herself some ceramic ‘sisters’. As the first figure emerged from the clay Jaine recogn-

ised immediatelythat it was destined for something special. As each new sister was ‘born’ Jaine had an

overwhelming sense that she should sign them “Mama J”, this decision was backed up when Tim saw them for the

first time and said “Hey you must sign them Mama J”!

The day arrived when the Holy Spirit spoke directly into her heart and Jaine knew with absolute clarity the full pur-

pose for the creation of her sisters. They were not to be for her own financial benefit alone, but were to become ‘

big sisters’ to the children of Lebone Village. For some time Jaine had been thinking of the children of Lebone

and what the future would hold for them once they matriculated. Knowing the cost of tertiary education, Jaine

realised that through the creation and sale of the sisters a sustainable source of income could be developed with

which to establish a bursary fund specifically for the children of Lebone Village. The ‘Mama J Bursary Fund’

seemed an appropriate name for it, and so when Avril and Willem went through to Grahamstown for the exhibi-

tion opening, Jaine approached them with her idea.

The ‘original sisters’ belong to the ‘Genesis Collection’, of which there are only 49. They come in a variety of

sizes and colours. Each is completely unique, has her own name and unique identification code as well as a

signed certificate of authenticity. Many of the sistershave been further decorated with shweshwe material

and ceramic paint.

Jaine is presently working on the ‘Genesis limited edition’. Taking five of the most popular sisters as a starting

point, Jaine is making approximately 100 of each sister in various sets of colours. These ‘sisters’ will initially only

come in two sizes, but will also be signed, named and certified, and available from the end of March. A per-

centage of the profits from the sale of each sister will go directly to the ‘Mama J’ Bursary Fund.

Should you like to find out more about the sisters please contact Jaine on +27 82 854 8327, or

[email protected], [email protected] or to have a look at which sisters are still available you may find

them on www.etsy.com search for Jaine Rist Art.

Some of Mama J’s sisters are also available here at Lebone Village in Bloemfontein should anyone wish to

come have a look at these amazing sisters and start your collection.

Valentines celebrations with the animals at the zoo

Our preschoolers didn’t celebrate Valentine’s day alone this year, they shared this special day of love with

the animals at the Bloemfontein Zoo. The preschool staff and volunteers arranged a fun filled picnic day for

them at the zoo. The little ones had difficulty containing their excitement, they enjoyed every minute of their

day and not only did some of them see many animals for the first time in their lives, but after this day they also

knew that they are loved.

Making our children feel secure and loved is something we work on tirelessly everyday for this is of the utmost

importance for their emotional development and well being. We are thankful for all the people who work

with us in making this a reality.

Crochet work: New section in our crafts and skills centre.

A new section was started in our skills centre by Marike Breedt. Marike started teaching our ladies how to cro-

chet and after only two lessons they are already able to make nice warm beanies. We can’t wait for them to

finish their first marketable crochet pieces. Teaching people new skills not only gives them a sense of pride

and accomplishment but it also acts as confirmation that where there is a will, there is a way. Rather than sit-

ting at home, doing nothing, these ladies are now earning an income and in this way are able to provide for

their children and families. Thank you Marike for this selfless deed, your giving of yourself and your time is price-

less and a blessing!

The season of fruitfulness….summer!

Summer is such a beautiful season especially here at Lebone Village, but not only is it a beautiful season but

also a season filled with fruitfulness; this summer was no different. The amazing amounts of fruit and vegeta-

bles we harvested from our orchard and Vegetable tunnels fed so many mouths and provided energy to

many young minds and bodies. The nutritious value of freshly picked fruit and vegetables is something that

not many people in today’s times have; but here at Lebone we are lucky to experience this on a daily ba-

sis. One of our harvests that was a big improvement of the previous season’s harvest was our sweet melons.

Succulent, sweet and delicious sweet melons formed part of the kids’ snack time for a big part of this sum-

mer.

Our fruit orchard produced hundreds of pears, apples, prunes, and peaches and from our vegetable tun-

nels lots of healthy beans, tomatoes, baby marrows, gem, squashes, corn, spinach and onions were har-

vested.

At present the tunnels and fields are being prepared for the winter cultivars to be planted, which will ensure

some more healthy vegetables during our winter harvest season.

Willemine,Gijsbert, Jonah, & an Ice cream bus

Willemine, Gijsbert and Jonah from the Netherlands spent a few weeks volunteering here at Lebone. Will-

emine volunteered here a few years ago, with her friend Jacoline van Eck, while she was still a student,

since then she got married to Gijsbert and they were blessed with a beautiful little boy, Jonah. All 3 of them

visited us, and what a blessing they’ve been to us all. During the time spent with us Gijsbert showed Jonah

that his dad has some valuable carpenting skills. He did some much needed renovation work on one of

the Wendy houses at the preschool. Willemine added the last touches when it came to the decorating side

and now we have a beautiful and sturdy wendy house again. Not only did they work hard, they also en-

sured the kids each got treated with a

soft serve ice cream from an Ice cream bus, right

here at Lebone Village. Willemine, Gijsbert,

and Jonah….we hope to see you again soon,

thank you for your selfless service and love.

Jeanine - a sad farewell after a whole year!

We had to say farewell to Jeanine Jongsma who

volunteered at Lebone for the past 12 months. Jeanine

, a qualified social worker from the Netherlands invested her

time and expertise here at Lebone in such a manner that what

she did will continue to make an impact on the lives of everyone

her path crossed during her time with us. We praise the Lord for

sending Jeanine to us and we can only stand amazed at the way

in which our prayers are sometimes answered. Jeanine, you will be

greatly missed by us all! Thank you for 12 months of laughter,

sometimes tears but most of all, thank you for your unconditional

commitment and love towards Lebone. May you receive the

blessings you bestowed on us back ten fold. You are a blessing!

Welcome to the Lebone family, Lucretia

We have been praying for the right person to be

principal in our preschool for more than 2 years and

today we can testify that our prayers have been

answered. We praise the Lord for sending Lucretia

Nothnagel to us. She was appointed as Edu Centre

Principal not long ago and soon after she started

the fruits became visible. The passion, dedication

and energy she puts into our Edu Centre is clearly

visible, she is truly shining the Light for our little ones

and is guiding and developing the Edu Centre staff

to be able to make an even bigger impact on our

children’s lives. Thank you Lucretia for being obedi-

ent to the Lord in fulfilling your calling here at Leb-

one. We praise God for you with thankful hearts for

this great gift in you!
