We have some amazing auction lots - items that money simply cannot buy. Please click here (www.ktsonlineauction.co.uk) to see the auction lots. Please circulate the link to as many people as you can – perhaps all your email and social media contacts! If you have any similar auction prizes that you are in a position to donate, please do contact Mrs Levesley ([email protected]). We are looking for items or experiences that are unique and special. The funds raised through this auction will enable us to purchase new resources that will turn our New Science Centre into a World Class learning experience for our students. Thank you for your support. As we have now entered a colder spell please may I ask you to ensure that your son or daughter wear appropriate outdoor coats to and from school. Also, when in school students should place their coats in their lockers - these of course can be accessed at break and lunch time. The vast majority of our students look very smart and present themselves incredibly well - it is a pleasure of mine to be able to walk the school and see huge levels of respect for each other. There is a very small minority who I have had to speak to in the last couple of days regarding wearing their uniform correctly whilst in school. I do expect students to present themselves in a very respectful manner and wear their uniform correctly. Please can you ensure that your son or daughter leaves home appropriately dressed and equipped for school. Can I ask you not to use the coach park to drop off and collect students at the beginning and end of the school day. We have two vacancies that I would like to draw your attention to – Exam Invigilator and Cover Administrator. Please click on the links for further details. http://www.ktemplar.herts.sch.uk/Exam-Invigilator/ http://www.ktemplar.herts.sch.uk/Cover-Administrator/ Finally please can I remind you that the school is closed on Friday 27th November. Spanish Students cook up a feast! On Thursday last week year 10 Spanish students spent the whole day immersed in Spanish. The students had the chance to write poems, learn a new tense AND cook tortilla! The students made great progress and we hope they had a good time too! Students said ‘it was fun making tortillas and doing something different’, one said it was a ‘good experience’ and another even answered in Spanish, saying ‘me gustó ‘immersion day’ porque fue muy interesante, muy divertido y ¡muy rico! (I liked immersion day because it was really interesting, really fun and really tasty!)

Maths In Action On 16th November, seven year 13 maths and further maths students attended Maths in Action, a day of mathematics lectures at University College London. The students attended five lectures on a variety of mathematical subjects. The day started with a lecture given by Simon Singh, author of a number of books including Fermat’s Last Theorem, which was solved 20 years ago this year. Simon Singh talked about the massive task solving this problem was, and what a major achievement this was for the mathematician, Andrew Wiles. Other lecturers discussed everything from the real-world links between Maths, Physics and Music (amongst other things), to the third year abstract university topic of P-Adic numbers. The final speaker of the day talked about how she used mathematical skills in her work for Hewlett-Packard Enterprise to help stop computer hackers and viruses. It was a very interesting day out and students said the following about the experience: “There were some very interesting lecturers. In particular, Simon Singh’s talk was very good. It was amazing to hear how someone could spend so much time (7 years) working to prove one theorem that altogether took 350 years to solve”. “It was very interesting to see how all kinds of maths could be unified to solve one thing, for example P-Adic numbers being used to solve Fermat’s last theorem”.

Laura Gregory (Year 11) was awarded Best Young Actress at the NODA East Noscar ceremony. Well done Laura!

News from the Drama Department New Views is a playwriting competition run by the National Theatre and we welcomed playwright Christopher Hill to the Knights Templar Drama Department on Wednesday this week to work with our budding playwrights. The session was inspiring and Christopher Hill offered a fantastic insight into the process of playwriting. The annual GCSE Drama Design Study Day happened today and our Y10 students set to work on being creative designers for the famous witches scene from Macbeth. See the photos below!

Winter Music Concert

7pm on Wednesday 9th December 2015

In the School Hall

Entrance is free. There will be a retiring collection in support of the Music Department.

A varied programme of classical and popular music to showcase the work of our music groups and ensembles. The evening will feature performances by the Wind Band, Brass Band, Big Band, Jazz Group and Junior Orchestra, as well as the Flute, Recorder, Classical Guitar and String ensembles. District Cross Country Championships On Thursday 12th November pupils from KTS took part in the District Cross Country Championships at Fairlands Vallley Stevenage. The competition involves 15 schools and our pupils all ran brilliantly and produced some incredible results.

Having won silver last year Marcus Crowther (year 10) finally did one better and won gold, in year 9 Charlotte Spinks ran a convincing race to finish 3rd and Will Bruning transferred his success from last summer on track to cross country and came home with the school’s second gold medal. In the team event, where the 4 runners scores get

added together, the year 9 girls team made up of regular running club members, Olivia Burley, Eva Dennis, Charlotte Spinks and Emma Shoobert won 1st place, the only KTS team to do this. KTS also had the task of running the finish line on the day, this was organised by our fantastic year 13 A Level PE class. These students have run this event two years in a row and received high praise from all the competing schools in the district! Well done to everyone and some pupils will now go on to compete in the County Cross Country Championships, St Albans in February.

County Hockey Tournament - Year 8 team remain undefeated but just miss out on the finals!

The team played some excellent hockey, drawing with Queenswood, Hertsmount and Dame Alice Owens school and beating Royal Masonic school 4-0. However, despite only conceding one goal, and remaining undefeated, this was not enough for the team to make it through to the final stages of the county hockey tournament. A big well done to all of the players - see you all at practice on Monday, new players always welcome!

Year 12 Parents’ Consultation Evening

We would like to thank all parents and students who attended the year 12 parents’ consultation evening.

This was an excellent opportunity for staff to provide detailed feedback on the progress of our students so

far, highlighting areas of strength and perhaps more importantly, areas in which students can improve. We

hope that both students and parents found it to be a rewarding and informative evening.

Senior Outdoor Hockey Tournament

On Monday evening the senior girls’ competed against other local schools in the Annual District Outdoor

Hockey Tournament. The girls played fantastically well in the cold weather - we are looking forward to

feeling a bit warmer in the indoor 6-aside tournament in January! The match against John Henry Newman

saw KTS dominate throughout and KTS spent almost the entire match in the opposition half. However John

Henry Newman managed one goal in the final minute resulting in 3 points being awarded to the opposition.

Another highlight of the evening was Beth Harley’s outstanding goal against St. Francis resulting in a 1-1

draw. Both teams were evenly matched and this was a brilliant result in comparison to previous years. Well

done to all the girls who played!

Senior football squad receive new Biggleswade United kit

The senior boys’ football team have benefitted hugely from our

recent partnership with Biggleswade United FC. The pro-license

coaches provided by the Bedfordshire club have proved

invaluable in allowing the boys to make excellent progress this

season but the rewards of this link have not stopped there!

Biggleswade United have kindly donated a new Adidas home kit

for the KTS senior boys’ squad which proudly displays both the

KTS logo and the Biggleswade United crest. We are very grateful

for the generosity of our partner club and hope to wear this kit in

a couple of finals this season!

Biggleswade United are still looking for U16 and U18 players to

add to their squad this season. It would be a great opportunity for

some of our KTS footballers to get some playing experience with

pro-license coaches.

KTS Graduate Profile- Megan Winzer

Megan left the KTS sixth form in the summer of 2015 having achieved ABD grades in English Literature,

Geography and Statistics, respectively. Although we are of

course very proud of Megan’s achievements in the

classroom, it was her school and community spirit which

really made Megan stand-out as an exemplary student. As

Head Girl, Megan was immersed in the life of the sixth form.

She helped to organise Dinner Dance events, MacMillan

coffee mornings and the big sixth form quiz nights, as well

as contribute huge amounts of her time to community

initiatives through Interact. Megan was also one of the

students selected to assist with the General Election vote

count in Kettering where she demonstrated her excellent

organisational skills and was fittingly rewarded with a lead

role throughout the evening. Megan is now studying

Journalism and Public Relations at The University of Lincoln

and she continues to demonstrate her leadership skills as

‘course representative’. We are very proud of Megan’s Megan pictured with her fellow interact members

achievements and fantastic community spirit- we wish her the best of luck in all her future endeavours.
