Apsaras are beautiful, supernatural women. They

are youthful and elegant, and proficient in the art of

dancing. They are the wives of the Gandharvas, the

court servants of Indra. They dance to the music made

by their husbands, usually in the palaces of the gods,

and entertain gods and fallen heroes. As caretakers of

fallen heroes, they may be compared to the valkyries

of Norse mythology.

The story of why chinthes guard the entrances of

pagodas and temples are given as such: A princess

had a son through her marriage to a lion, but later

abandoned the lion who then became enraged and

set out on a road of terror throughout the lands. The

son then went out to slay this terrorizing lion. The son

came back home to his mother stating he slew the

lion, and then found out that he killed his own father.

The son later constructed a statue of the lion as a

guardian of a temple to atone for his sin.

of Goddess Ganga is a crocodile or Makara and She

Jayavarman VII or in Khmer (1125–1215) was a king

(reigned c.1181-1215) of the Khmer Empire in present

day Siem Reap. Cambodia. He was the son of King

Dharanindravarman II (r. 1150-1160) and Queen

Sri Jayarajacudamani. He married Jayarajadevi and

then, after her death, married her sister Indradevi.

The two women are commonly thought to have been

a great inspiration to him, particularly in his unusual

devotion to Buddhism, as only one prior Khmer king

is a Buddhist.

is the Thai representation of the Hindu god Brahma,

and is regarded as a fortune and protection deity. A

celebrated example of this representation is the statue

golden dome of the Government House of Thailand

also contains a statue of Phra Phrom.

He is depicted in art as a serpent with no body riding

a chariot drawn by eight black horses. Rahu is one of

the navagrahas (nine planets) in Vedic astrology. The

Rahu kala (time of day under the influence of Rahu) is

considered inauspicious.

A prayer wheel is a cylindrical ‘wheel’ (Tibetan: ‘khor)

on a spindle made from metal, wood, stone, leather,

or even coarse cotton. Traditionally, the mantra Om

Mani Padme Hum is written in Sanskrit externally

on the wheel. Also sometimes depicted are Dakinis,

Protectors and very often the 8 auspicious symbols

Ashtamangala. According to the Tibetan Buddhist

tradition based on the lineage texts regarding prayer

wheels, spinning such a wheel will have much the

same meritorious effect as orally reciting the prayers.
