We are blessed to have so many members and friends with us on Shabbat morning. To help make it possible for everyone to enjoy the Kiddush follow-ing services, we will have two Kiddush locations whenever possible. Beginning January 14th, you will be able to enjoy Kiddush on either the first or fifth floor. Please check the weekly bulletin for details. And please be sure to sponsor at least once annual-ly. Call, email, visit our website or use our app and help keep out Kiddush the hottest in town.

JC KIDDUSH UPDATE

Every year the Rebbetzins of the Upper West Side hold a fundrais-er for our local Mikvah. This year, the event was chaired by our very own Rebbetzin Rachel Levine. Graciously hosted by Tracy & Sander Gerber, over 100 women turned out to hear Elisheva Liss, LMFT, de-liver a meaningful presentation on how we talk about intimacy. Con-tributions reached record-setting levels and the event netted almost $50,000 for the Mikvah. Thanks to everyone who participated. And please continue to support this vital communal institution. Donate online at westsidemikvah.org or make a check payable to the Mik-vah and mail it to The Jewish Center office.

WEST SIDE MIKVAH UPDATE

Did you know? At the end of services, congregants remain in their seats until the conclusion of Adon Olam. As the rabbi and cantor process down the aisles, the congregation rises. The rabbi and cantor look forward to greeting you on the receiving line on your way to Kiddush.

To Make a Father Proud Rabbi Avi Feder, William Fischman Rabbinic Intern

“@Yaakov Hey Dad, I’m alive! & #Viceroy in @EgyptGov – come visit ☺” Had Twitter existed in the Times of Old, Yosef may have sent a message much like the one above to Yaakov. Loosely modeled after the biblical narrative, the above mock-tweet encap-sulates much of the first message Yosef sends to his father after years of silence. Mere moments after revealing himself to his siblings, Yosef com-mands them to relay a message a home to his Father. Chapter 45, Verse 9 reads: מהרו ועלו אל אבי ואמרתם אליו כה אמר בנך יוסף שמני

אלהים לאדון לכל מצרים רדה אלי אל תעמד:

“Now hurry back to my father and say to him: “Thus says your son Yosef ‘God has made me Lord of all of Egypt; come down to me without delay’”. Rav Yaakov Naiman in his Darchie Mussar, ques-tions what message was Yosef wanted to convey here. Certainly any father would be proud of his son, but we understand Yosef to be above a mere brag. Further, Yaakov was a man of spir-itual pursuits and heavenly values; being the Chief Bureaucratic Oversight Officer in a for-eign government was not the career path Yaa-kov envisioned for his son and surely was not what Yosef was showing off about to Yaakov Avinu.

Looking at the above cited text with eyes at-tuned to Yaakov’s values, we understand a rich-er message, one which Yaakov took great pride in, and something we too can strive towards. The subject of the message is not the high office which Yosef held. The emphasis is to be placed on Who guided Yosef’s life into that position. Yosef prefaces by asserting that G-d placed him where he is today. It was only through divine intervention that he was alive and now the Vice-roy of the world superpower. Yosef’s message to Yaakov, and the Torah’s message to us, is how to express our pride. There is no doubt that Yosef was delighted by his achievements and felt fulfillment in life; we too have every right to be satisfied and share our good fortunes with others. The lesson being taught, however, is the lens through which we are to do just that. Claiming not that it was he who accomplished these great feats, Yosef rec-ognizes G-d for being the force behind all his prosperity, teaching us the model by which are to do the same. It is our imperative to be pleased with our lot in life, perhaps even tweet-ing a #HumbleBrag or a #Blessed about it too; but all the while let us not forget that we are to #ThankGod first.
