Directions: This question is based on the accompanying six documents. The

Task: Using information from the documents and your knowledge of

history, answer the questions that follow each document in Part A. Your answers to the questions will help you to write the Part B essay, in which you will be asked to:

" There was then no sickness; they had no aching bones; they had then no high fever; they had then no smallpox; they had then no abdominal pain; they had then no consumption; they had then no headache. At that time the course of humanity was orderly. The foreigners made it otherwise when they arrived here." (Chronicle of Chilam Bayam.) "It was the month of Tepeilhuitl when it began and it spread over the people as great destruction. Some it quite covered with pustules on all parts -- their faces, their heads, etc. There was a great havoc. Very many died of it. They could not walk; they only lay in their resting places and beds. They could not move ; they could not stir; they could not change positions , nor lie in one side; nor face down , nor on their backs. And if they stirred, much did they cry out. Great was its (smallpox) destruction. Covered, mantled with pustules, many people died of them. " (Sahagun - Florentine Codex)

“In this vast and very fertile vineyard of the Indian tribes which they call the Pimas…I have been able, through the celestial favors of the heavenly saints, to wash about three hundred Indians in the holy water of baptism… God willing, hundreds, and later, thousands will be gathered into the most holy Mother Church… In this charge where I am working, a mission [has] been established, and many very suitable rooms of a house [have] been built. We are now occupied in the building of a new church, with the help of some soldiers, and its walls have… happily arisen to a height of several feet.”

-From a letter written by Father Kino, June 30, 1687.
