CHURCHES TOGETHER IN HEACHAM

How will you remember this Jubilee year? There have beensporting events aplenty and enough gold to satisfy even the

most acquisitive commentators – possibly. The Queen has toured the country fromeast to west and north to south. Thecrowds have come out in large numberseven when the weather was inclement. The florists must have had a field day.

Soon we will remember another 60th anniversary. On 31st

January 1953 flood waters hit this eastern coast and many losttheir lives in a storm that is still remembered. More will recallthe storm of 1987 which has been replayed over these last fewdays. The joy of sporting achievement, the acclamation of crowds forour monarch tinged with concern over Prince Philip and sharingin the disappointment – sometimes despair – of those athleteswho gave their all and won nothing. The economy of this nation and many others is not giving causefor celebration. It is all too easy to see how the cutbacks in thiscountry are affecting people; on the continent the levels ofausterity have led to riots. On a personal level many will haveknown sadness as well as joy this year. The church is part of this. We have hosted weddings andfunerals, marking beginnings and endings. Sometimes there aremany people present, at times only a few. Yet, regardless ofnumbers, the occasion marks something significant. At thesetimes the line between tears and smiles can be very thin as weremember the past and pray for the future. In all that happenswe look forward with faith and hope. For me one of the slightly surprising mass responses this yearwas the large number of people who came out onto the streetsand into the parks to catch a glimpse of the Olympic flame. Intheir thousands, all over the country, people watchedhundreds of different people carrying a burning torch.A symbol of the coming Olympic and ParalympicGames. Great play was made of the route around thecountry and that most would be within reach if theywanted to see the torch.Light has been on my mind over the past few weeks, not least because we are seeing less of it. The lights inthe church are failing and are due to be replaced. Bythe time the Newsletter is published I am hoping thatthe work will be well underway before the wintrygloom invades. At present the central part of thechurch that is meant to have ten bulbs only has twoworking units. The future is unknown – and the way is not always clear.Having a reliable light to show the way is somethingmany would welcome. Perhaps as the Christmas lightsappear you will remember that Jesus Christcame to show the way.

POPPY APPEALDear NewsletterRemembrance Sunday is once more fastapproaching. It is a time whenthroughout our hectic lives we allowourselves time to remember those whopaid the ultimate sacrifice for ourfreedom. They were the ones who went

out into the battlefields, took to the air and sailed the seas thatwe may enjoy our present lives. The losses still go on in morerecent conflicts. It may have been under different circumstancesbut a loss to a family is still as traumatic now as it was in thosedark days of our two World Wars. Let us remember all thosewho have died in conflicts and be eternally thankful to them.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEMIf you wish to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for us,please come along on SUNDAY, 11th NOVEMBER to theParish Church (9.45am) and Memorial Service (afterwards10.45am).May I take this opportunity to remind you, official Poppy Sellerswill be about in our village and any donation will be gratefullyreceived. The money collected goes to the Poppy Appeal whichin turn is used to help those in need. The Poppy Appeal has donegreat things in the past. Help us collect more to meet the everincreasing demands made upon it.

THE POTTING SHEDThe secret of improved plant breeding, apart from scientific knowledge, is love.Luther Burbank, American plant breeder

and botanist.

I think this may be my penultimate newsletter article. As I toldyou two editions ago, I have decided to stop producing thesearticles as a) I am running out of stuff to say and b) my heart isnot in it anymore. I “penned” the first one, I believe, in March2000 so I have now been at it for nearly thirteen years. InitiallyI used to go turn and turn about with the Gardening club but theydropped out and from 2001 I was doing an article every month.I have to say that, until this year, I have enjoyed every minutebut since my beloved Jill died in January, my interest, both ingardening and writing about it has waned considerably. Of lateI have started to get more interested again and thanks to mybrother, who has been a tower of strength in the garden (he cando in a couple of hours, stuff that takes me a couple of days) myenthusiasm is slowly returning. However, producing articlesevery month has become much harder and having looked backat some of my recent efforts, I realise that they are sadly lackingin both humour and intellectual content. So it’s time to stop.

However there must be some of you out there who are able - andwilling, to contribute some literary gems to the Newsletter. Iremember not so very long ago when there were at least threedecent length articles each month. They don’t have to be aboutgardening and they don’t even have to be a regular contribution.Out of a village population of what, some seven thousand souls, surely someone can make the effort to entertain your fellowvillagers with the occasional pithy article. So, get to it folks andhit those computer keys! Or even pick up a pen.

Autumn is now upon us and it’s time to shut down the garden, clean out the greenhouse. give the lawns and hedges their finalcut (maybe) and prepare for the Winter. I’ve cleared half mygreenhouse and taken the leaves off the few remaining plants inthe fond hope that the few toms still hanging will ripen. It seemsto be working after a fashion as several fruits which a week orso ago were still very green are now almost ready to pick. I don’tsuppose they will be particularly flavoursome but they will begood, sliced thinly and dressed with balsamic vinegar in a salad. My daughter Eileen is a dab hand at salads, in fact she’s a verygood cook. She and her elder sister ran a vegetarian B&B indeepest France for ten years and were highly spoken of. Thanksto their mum, they all learned to cook quite early on, a skilleveryone should aquire no matter what gender they are. Sadly, the supermarkets plug ready made meals at us and it is only tooeasy to bung a packet in the microwave rather than spend a littlewhile cooking fresh produce. And that’s me preaching who hada bacon sarnie for his lunch! Well we can’t be perfect all thetime and I had been busy in the garden.

There is so much to do out there, that I sometimes get paralysedand don’t know where to start. And today it was cold and windy- I hate wind! Still, once you get going, the work gets easier. Ireally should be doing a major cut down now but so many plantsare still flowering that I haven’t the heart to chop them down.Maybe next week - or the week after. Well, sometime fairly soonanyway.

In my back garden there is a cypress tree. I suspect it started lifeas a hedging plant. When we came here in 1971, there was acypress hedge but this particular one was about 12ft high andlooked much healthier than the others. So Mr. “I know nothingmuch about gardening” decided to take the top off the cypress

hedge in the fond hope that they would bush out more. And theyall died. All except the better looking one. That one is now about60ft high and has a 40ft spread. My neighbour’s garden is inpermanent shade. So a nice man is coming soon and at vastexpense is going to, as he says, “lighten the load”. Said tree wasstruck by lightning some eight years ago so there is some deadand damaged wood to remove. My neighbour, like me, wantsthe tree to stay as it is, a magnificent specimen, but it will benice not to have it looming all the time. I have a nice, homemade, brick cold frame nearby and I’ve had to line it with plasticsheeting to stop all the moisture being sucked out by the treeroots. I’m quite looking forward to having the job done. Treesare lovely to have but can be a problem. My lovely Jill, “nicked”a 6” high christmas type conifer from a roadside bank in Franceabout 13 years ago and brought it home to lovingly plant in ourgarden. The thing is now a good 20ft high, too close to the housereally and I think it’s a toss up as to whether I shall depart thisvale of tears first or the house will fall down due to the effect ofJill’s tree on the foundations. It’s a nice tree though and as mydarling girl planted it, it’s going to stay where it is.

I was prevailed upon to give of my valuable time, helping to dosome clearing up in the churchyard. I feel a bit guilty about thisas I’ve lived here for 42 years and this is the first time I’ve doneany community work. I blame helping in the rearing of fourchildren, a busy career away from Heacham and, latterly. beinga full-time carer but it’s not a good excuse. I could always findtime to go careering about The Wash in a racing dinghy orroaming the mountains of Wales and Scotland. Anyway I went, did several hours helping and enjoyed unleashing my chainsawon some unwanted growth at the base of a lime tree. So it wasn’tall just hard work. I might even go again! I think though, thatthe chainsaw will need a new blade, as it cut into several stoneswhilst tackling the rooty bits and its cutting performance had

definitely deteriorated towards the end of the session. Good funthough, boys and their toys!

Vegetables and their cultivation by T W Saunders.

As this will be my last gardening article (the next and very lastwill be a troll through some of my past gems), I thought wewould finish with the humble potato.

Botanical name: Solanum tuberosum of the order solanaceae.Native habitat South America. Perennial.

First introduced into Europe by the Spaniards and grown by themin Spain. It was introduced into England, possibly by Sir WalterRaleigh.

The Irish took up their cultivation with enthusiasm before theybecame popular in England. Sir Walter planted his first tuberson his estate in Youghal in Ireland. Gerarde the herbalistillustrates the potato in his herbal of 1597 and describes thetubers as “delicacies for the confectioner” and not as “commonfood”. Indeed the potato was regarded as a great delicacy, tuberscosting one shilling per pound. However, in 1662-3 the RoyalSociety urged its members to plant potatoes so as to provide themasses with food in case of famine. The first account we haveof the noble tuber being grown extensively is from the writingsof Arthur Young who says that in 1807, a farmer named Pittmanof Barking grew 300 acres and sent to market, washed and readyfor sale, no less than 3000 tons.

The potato was not introduced into Scotland before 1725.

Soil: The best soils are those of a loamy, calcareous or sandynature.” We now know that limey or calcareous soils encouragescab but this virus may not have been such a nuisance when thisbook was penned in 1910. “It is the habit to rely on animalmanures solely and to spread this in the drills at the time ofplanting.; This habit may cause rank growth if used in excess. It is better to apply the manure the previous Autumn”. Well Ihave always grown my spuds well bedded in horse manure andget good yields - and little or no scab!

Mr Saunders goes on to extol the use of cuttings from sproutingtubers to propagate favoured varieties. Seed potatoes were onlyjust coming into vogue. We are very lucky to have the advantageof all the new varieties available. I have never heard of the“Evergood” or “Sir John Llewellyn” potato nor yet the “LimGray”. I wonder what they tasted like.

It’s all fascinating stuff and a delight to read but I’m glad wehave the benefit of modern varieties of vegetables, many ofwhich still carry the genes of their forebears. All I can say to allof you, is that if you make sure your soil is in good heart andthat you cherish your gardens, you can’t go far wrong.

“Together we explore, discover, achieve and grow”

As you read this we will have come tothe end of our first half-term of the

academic year which has flown by! Our new children havesettled in well and those who have moved up a class havetaken their new challenges in their stride. Our children have worked hard in school and after schooltaking part in a number of clubs. One club of note is our newReading Angels. The girls were rather disgruntled that theboys had a book club and lobbied for their own club. Thishas proven very successful with the girls enjoying a range ofbooks and creating their own books!Another after school activity was a very successful bring andbuy sale which raised close on £300 for special schoolactivities. We are grateful to everyone who supported thisenjoyable event. As well as working hard the children have taken time toinvestigate and celebrate harvest festival. They have alsoconsidered children less fortunate than themselves and havevery generously given items for a large number of shoeboxgift boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The gift boxes aredistributed to needy children across the globe in time forChristmas. We are pleased to be welcoming a new part-time teacher MrsDix to support individuals and groups of children to raisetheir learning and attainment. Mrs Dix will be supported byMrs Longworth in this new role. Our on-going programme of improvements to the fabric ofthe school has continued with the completion of the toiletrefurbishment. The children contributed with paintings whichhave been transferred into the vinyl door coverings makingthe area bright and cheerful. Redecoration continues in otherareas of the school. As we return to school after a well-deserved half-term breakwe will be preparing to meet with our next intake of nurserychildren. This kicks off with home visits by the nursery staffto see the children in their familiar home environment duringNovember. Experience has shown that this makes thetransition to nursery school much easier for the children.

Incinerator UpdateHaving a February public inquiry date is not ideal and is earlierthan originally expected. Those promoting the incinerator canafford a team of professional advocates. KLWIN cannot matchtheir financial resources but we do have stronger arguments. Ourchances of defeating the incinerator at the inquiry can beimproved by engaging a professional planning consultant to helpus prepare. This is our chance to get a fair hearing; it is vital wemake as good a job as possible within the limited time.Preparations and fundraising must go hand in hand. The moremoney we raise the more we can reinforce our arguments withprofessional planning support. Some people have expressedconcern that the Planning Inspectorate might not look at everyobjection. In reply to an email, the Inspectorate confirmed theyare taking ALL previously submitted objections into account. Ifanyone wishes to raise further objections or wants to speak atthe inquiry they will need to inform the Planning Inspectorate.Few West Norfolk County Councillors have done anything tostop the incinerator or stand up for our democracy. Unless theyare going to start working for residents, what was the point oftheir standing for election? What will they do between now andthe May 2013 elections? West Norfolk Borough Council on theother hand has investigated a recycling alternative. If successful,it would save money and leave virtually nothing for incineration.

KLWIN is working on behalf of the community. If you canhelp us in any practical way, either selling raffle tickets, calendars or help at events please get in touch, we need yoursupport.

They have already representedour school at the Smithdon Cluster Schools’ Council Conferenceat Redgate where we explored ‘Raccoon Circles’ which involvedlots of team building games with other schools. It was great fun.Classes F3 and S4 went to West StowAnglo Saxon village to learn about howpeople lived in Saxon times. There wasa reconstructed village and a brilliantmuseum where you try clothes andarmour on and look at the objects thathad been dug up from the site.

Classes B5/6 and J4/5 went to Norwich Castle to learn about theRomans – they also had the opportunity to dress up and to makea Roman Torc.

The cookery club visited JamieOliver’s restaurant in Cambridge. We made some bread and ate alovely pasta dish. We had to leave school at 7am !!!

Heacham Tennis ClubThe grass courts have been much improved after the care andattention given by the groundsman throughout the season, andagain this autumn. Specialist contractors will be on site toendeavour to make them even better for next year, I’m sure. Wehave some of the best-maintained courts in the area – thanks toHeacham Club Charity. The season has once again come to an end but the good news isthat, at long last, senior membership has increased! Severalfactors are involved not least of which is the availability of theresurfaced hard court which allows year round play. Times havechanged and the long-standing ‘Club Nights’ would appear tobe a thing of the past as people have so many other commitmentsthese days, and rather choose to set up their own games, thoughthe old stalwarts will continue next year in the hopes of attractingeven more new senior members. The junior section has enjoyed many Monday evenings ofcoaching and fun this year, which culminated in a presentationevening in the Social Club at the end of the season. Hot dogs, chips and drinks were enjoyed by all and was followed bypresentation of medals and sweets for all, and trophies for thewell deserving. This year, James Small, Oliver Neal, TannerSwann, Scot Jones, Isabel Brown and Charlie Wright were theworthy winners. James, Oliver and Tanner expanded their tennisexperience and entered the (Under 12’s) Hunstanton Tournamentthis year. It has been many years since Heacham Tennis Clubhas had juniors enter this tournament and we hope they will, with others, enter again next year. Thanks must go to Richard Smith for turning up every Mondayfor the juniors throughout the season and also to Sam Robinsonwho has been able to fit in some junior coaching for the grouparound his college work. Thanks also to Les and Myra Trundleywho once again funded the medals and trophies. We look forward to the 2013 season with the knowledge that,at long last, Heacham Tennis Club is ‘on the up’ and hope thatwith the Olympic legacy still ringing in people’s ears, even morechildren, adults and families will get involved in sport atwhatever level suits them.Though technically out of season, membership applications /enquiries are always welcomed, particularly from adults. Please contact Janice Campbell 01485 572120 / 079236 12187or 01485 570776 (evenings) for information.

We will now be running scrabble sessions each Wednesdayafternoon from 2.00pm until 4.00pm from 7 November. Justpop along and join in, coffee or tea will be available. Thesesessions are quite informal so there is no need to book, but it isfirst come first served.

The Pocahontas PlayersHello, from a very busy drama group! Yes, as you can see, we are well into rehearsals of Mother Goose the Pantomime but still lotsof 'line learning' and 'stage directions' to sink in. Once we have learnt our lines and song words, the scripts can go down, and stagedirections will (or should??) come naturally. We have a 30 strong enthusiastic cast, making for 'fun', although hard work, rehearsal evenings. At the time of writing this, we haveyet to master three dance routines, being taught by Jaime Tooley. Just another thing to remember!!After Jaime's success in our last production, teaching Mary Poppins, Bert and the chimney sweeps, plus the lions from Lion King, fabulous dance routines, she really has her work cut out for this production. What's this? Teaching Seven ducks? and a whole villageof 'Toy' folk? . . . Good luck Jaime! It’s going to be quackers!!We welcome several new members to the group. Some having big roles, others have small roles but these all add up, with the restof the players, for a fabulous production.Dates for Mother Goose are Thurs 24th Jan / Fri 25th Jan / plus 2 performances on Sat 26th Jan 2013.  It will held in the PUBLICHALL, Station Road, Heacham, 7.30pm start for evenings and 2.00pm for the Saturday matinee. Tickets  - ADULTS £6.00 each.Children aged 12 and under £4.00 each.  Please phone Janice 01485 570402 or Jim 01485 571267 for tickets.More details, and hopefully an advertising poster of Mother Goose herself, will be in next month’s HEACHAM NEWSLETTER -Thank you ALL so much for your continued support!

HEACHAM PARISH COUNCIL NOTICEBOARDParish Council Meetings for November in Brief

Size of Parish Council: The Council debated concerns that therehad not been enough parishioners standing for election to theParish Council to warrant a polled election for many years. TheClerk stated that the size of the Council, 17 seats, had been setas a part of a national review nearly 20 years ago. A reductionin the number of seats could mean that residents were underrepresented. In addition, a smaller number of councillors wouldmean that the Council might struggle to operate effectiveCommittees. It was therefore concluded that the number shouldremain at 17.Tree Survey: The Council noted that the Trees in the RecreationGround and Brays Pit had been surveyed. The Council approvedthe contractor’s recommendations and maintenance work wouldbe carried out over the coming months. The Council alsoapproved a more detailed examination of a Horse Chestnut inthe Recreation Ground.Church Lane: The Council submitted its objection to theproposed development of 16 houses on Church Lane.Saltings: The Council approved the installation of a sign at theflood bank end of the Saltings. The sign reinforced the messagethat the area was being maintained as a nature reserve and thatdogs must be kept on leads.Recreation Ground: The Council approved the CommunityCommittee’s plans to ask Highways to help improve the accessat the Staithe Road entrance of the Recreation Ground.Sunnyside Close: The Council noted that the large pothole andpoor road surface at the Scout Hut end of Sunnyside Close hadbeen reported to Highways.Old Friends Hall: The Council noted that the work party wouldcomplete the refurbishment of the main room by the end ofOctober.Recycling: The Council heard that the Councillors who hadattended the Borough Council’s presentation on the newrecycling plant, thought the proposals were an excellentalternative to the Incinerator.
