The 2010 Silver Cup Matches were contested October 25-27 at the Primm Valley Lakes course.

The 2010 Silver Cup matches were played at Primm Valley Lakes course on October 25-27. The Southern Nevada Women have not won the cup since 2006, and were on a mission to

return the Cup to the South! Over the past couple of months the Southern Nevada Team has held team practices and social events to create a team spirit that might allow each individual to dig a little deeper. It made this year more valuable for the players, and proved that it was more than just individual matches, it was about the whole team delivering for each other. In the final day, WSNGA needed 9 points of 20 to win the cup. With only 2 matches left on

the course, one at 1 down through 17, the other 1 up through 16, WSNGA needed a tie and a win to pull it all off. With an eagle on 18 WSNGA got the 1/2 point, and the final match

produced a birdie on 18 to give the Southern Nevada Women the 20.5 points for a victory! Congratulations to all the competitors. Visit www.wsnga.org for more information.

Misunderstood Rules by Mike Charrie MY BALL ROLLED OUTSIDE OF THE MEASURED CLUB-LENGTH AMOUNT OF RELIEF, WHAT DO I DO? 20-2c/1 Dropped Ball Rolling Out of Prescribed Dropping Area Q. A player taking relief under the Rules sometimes appears to obtain more relief than he is entitled to because the relevant Rule allows him some latitude within which to drop and the dropped ball then rolls some distance from the place where it was dropped. When a Rule prescribes an area within which a ball must be dropped, e.g., within one or two club-lengths of a particular point, should it be re-dropped if it rolls outside the area so prescribed? A. No, not necessarily. Provided the ball has been correctly dropped as Rule 20-2a states: 1. A ball to be dropped under the Rules must be dropped by the player himself. 2. The player must stand erect, hold the ball at shoulder height and arm's length and drop it 3. If a ball is dropped by any other person or in any other manner and the error is not corrected as provided in Rule 20-6*, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke. As long as the ball does not roll into any of the positions listed in Rule 20-2c, it is in play and must not be re-dropped. In particular, under Rule 20-2c(vi), the ball may roll up to two club-lengths from the point where it first struck a part of the course when dropped, and this may result in its coming to rest an appreciable distance farther from the condition from which relief is being taken. If a competitor makes a stroke from a wrong place (ie: re-drops the ball back inside the two club-lengths of relief), he incurs a penalty of two strokes under the applicable Rule. The player must play out the hole with the ball played from the wrong place, without correcting his error, provided they have not committed a serious breach. For example: (a) a ball dropped within two club-lengths of the margin of a lateral water hazard may come to rest almost four club-lengths from the hazard margin without the player being required to re-drop it. A ball dropped away from an immovable obstruction within one club-length of the nearest point of relief may come to rest almost three club-lengths from the nearest point of relief without the player being required to re-drop it. *20-6. Lifting Ball Incorrectly Substituted, Dropped or Placed: A ball incorrectly substituted, dropped or placed in a wrong place or otherwise not in accordance with the Rules but not played may be lifted, without penalty, and the player must then proceed correctly.

Touching Story at the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame Inductee Ceremony October 19, 2010 Written by Steve Fink

In the early sixties, my father was one of the operating partners of the Beverly Rodeo Hotel, on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Prior to that time, my father spent time with a construction company that built houses in Henderson during the fifties. They built homes that were 700 and 900 square feet and sold them for $7,999 and $9,999...unbelievable!! These were some of the first homes ever built in Henderson!! Thus, he spent a lot of time in Vegas during the fifties and sixties, and became acquainted with Mo Dalitz, Merv Adelson, Allard Rowan and Irwin Molasky, all of whom had a lot to do with starting the Tournament of Champions at the Desert Inn. He also got to know Al Bessilink since "Besse" used to regularly play in the Tournament of Champions. When Bessilink would come to LA for the LA Open, he would stay at my Dad's hotel. It was about 1963 that I got my first set of golf clubs, a set of ladies' clubs that were cut down to my size, which Mr. Bessilink had made especially

for me as a favor to my Dad. The clubs were "Golfcraft," the prede-cessor to Titleist! Seeing Mr. Bessilink last night was amazing for me. I really en-joyed reminding him of my Dad and my Dad's partner, Seymour Owens. Besse told me that when he stayed at the Beverly Rodeo Hotel, "Al and Seymour treated me like a King!!" And when I re-minded him that he arranged to get me my first set of golf clubs, he remembered that as well. Truly a very fun evening. SNGA Representatives in attendance at the Dinner included: SNGA Board Member Dennis Gomez & Dottie Gomez, SNGA Board Member Steve Fink & Sylvia Fink, SNGA Board Member Mike Bridges and Teri Newberry, Executive Director Nicole Dutt-Roberts & Mark Roberts.

The Oldest Running Tournament in Las Vegas Adds Another Candle to the Cake… (Continued from Page 1) Las Vegas Golf Club October 21-24, 2010 Defending Champion Steve Fink (134) just missed participating in a playoff with three young guns Greg Horodesky (133), Tyler Mays (133), and Taylor Montgomery (133), who fired a second round 64 to put himself in contention. After a very steady and consistent tournament, Mays pulled a drive out of bounds on the first playoff hole to put himself out of the running for the championship. Montgomery piped a driver down the first hole only to airmail the green into the backside bunker with his second shot. After an awkward bunker shot, Montgomery was left with a chip up the hill to the back right hole location. His chip left him 6 feet from the hole for a bogey. Horodesky had driven his ball into the right rough and left his second shot in the bunker in front of the green. Horodesky’s bunker shot looked to be right on target, but a little too much spin kept it about 7 feet from the hole. Horodesky would miss that putt and tap in for bogey. Horodesky could only watch as Montgomery bury a clutch bogey putt to extend the playoff. On the second hole,

Montgomery would again pipe a drive and put himself in good position to go at this short par 4. Horodesky would blow his drive right into the trees but find some luck with an open shot into the green. Both Horodesky and Montgomery hit decent seconds into the green and Mont-gomery would miss a 12 foot birdie opportunity setting the stage for Horodesky. The putt was about a 10 footer, downhill breaking from right to left. Horodesky put a lot of pace on the putt and as it hit the back of the hole and fell in the cup, he jumped with his fist in the air as he be-came the 2010 Las Vegas City Amateur Champion. During the Scratch Competition on day 1, Erik Allison aced the par 3 12th hole playing at 98 yards. The hole is a small yet daunting par 3

with water along the front and large awkward mounds in the back. Congratulations Erik. Randy Goodwill (139-net) won the weekend’s net division by one stroke over An-

thony Mule (140-net). Isaac Leos finished two back at 141 net. Goodwill vaults into the lead for Senior Net Player of the Year with this victory. John Turk finished with a two day total of 135 (-9) and fired a 63 on the first day which helped him stage off the charging Steve Fink who trailed by three after day one, and fin-ished one shot back of Turk for the Senior Scratch title. Doug Pool and Lance Baral would finish 5 back at 140. Ed Beslow (140-net) took home the Senior Net title over Bill

Spencer (140) and Steve Fink (140) after a three hole playoff. Steve Paulsen finished one stroke back at 141.

The Super Senior Championship Division also had a playoff for their top spot with De-fending Champion Steve Johnson (148) taking home the title over Sev Leoffler (148). The Super Senior Net Division seemed like a runaway compared to all the other divi-sions with Leo May (133-net) winning by three strokes over Tom Khamis (136-net). May fired a net opening round of 64 (-8) to help him cruise to victory. Overall the tour-nament was a great success which included the largest showing in a Super Senior field ever! The SNGA would like to thank the profes-

sional golf and restaurant staff at Las Vegas Golf Club who did a phenomenal job ac-commodating the mass amounts of people who were there over the four days, making everything flow very smoothly and the maintenance crew for having the course in such awesome conditions. The SNGA would also like to thank all the volunteers who took time out of their schedule to help with the event; we couldn’t have done it without you.

Get Hip for More Club Speed

A common problem in many amateur golfers swings is not enough hip clearance during their downswing. When the leading hip does not rotate early or completely enough then it tends to slide toward the target instead. This typically results in a breakdown or early folding of the leading elbow (“chicken wing”) and wrist during impact and the early release phase of the swing which then causes diminished club head speed. The faster and more com-pletely that the leading leg (hip and knee) straightens and rotates the quicker the other hip will rotate toward the target. The additional speed that this hip motion generates in a golf swing is a tremendous power source for golf-ers who hit the ball a long way. If the leading hip is not rotating fast enough, it usually stems from poor hip and leg rotational flexibility, strength, stability and/or balance. If your PGA/LPGA instructor has diagnosed this problem in your swing then consult a fit-ness professional with golf-specific expertise. They will be able to evaluate you to determine your individual physi-cal needs and how they relate to your swing motion. They will also be able to recommend a customized set of ex-ercises to help you improve your areas of physical weakness so your pro can then more quickly and easily and safely facilitate a change in your swing. Until then, here are some sample exercises that could be helpful to you if you are found to have some flexibility, strength, stability and/or balance challenges in your front hip and leg.

Cross Over Hip Stretch

Begin this drill by laying flat on your back with both knees up and feet flat on the ground. Next, take your right ankle and cross it over your left knee, and allow the left knee/right ankle complex to fall slowly down to the ground on the LEFT side. While the complex is slowly lowering to the left, place left hand on the RIGHT knee and gently aid this slow lowering of the legs. Once the legs have fallen completely to the left and your left hand is pulling the right knee towards the ground, you may turn your head to the right to try and get the maximum out of the stretch. Always perform this stretch in a very slow and controlled manner, never to the point of pain. Repeat procedure on opposite side.

Bridges

Lying flat on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the ground, extend your arms out to your side with your palms facing up. From there push your heels into the ground and lift your pelvis up. Perform reps of this focusing on using your glutes to lift and minimizing your legs To make this harder, you can cross your arms over your chest. If you try these exercises and you find them to be too challenging or uncom-fortable, do not continue, until you have consulted with your physician. All exercises for golf should be customized to your needs after a golf perform-ance evaluation.
