Victoria’s regions are capitalising on the economic benefits that business events bring to local communities and recognise the need to attract national and intrastate conferences, conventions and meetings to their areas.

Business events are not seasonal, and the Great Ocean Road is just as spectacular in winter as it is at the height of summer. Long recognised as a great destination for visitors from around Australia and the world, the region has in recent years become a prime location for year-round business events large and small.

There is an extraordinary array of natural attractions along one of the world’s most scenic roads, handy to picturesque villages with a great range of venues and fine produce.

This is the ninth edition of the Great Ocean Road Planners Guide – in it you’ll find all you need to plan everything from a large international convention in Geelong to a conference or team-building event on the Great Ocean Road. The Guide offers ideas for specialised incentive trips or events to reward your staff whilst conferencing in the region.

Widely recognised as a regional leader in the business events industry, I commend the national award winning team at Business Events Geelong in bringing together the attractions and facilities of the Geelong Otway, Shipwreck Coast and Discovery Coast regions to promote the entire Great Ocean Road region.

The Victorian Government’s commitment to growing business events in regional Victoria will deliver new opportunities and drive growth in the industry. I am sure you will find the 2012-13 Great Ocean Road Planners Guide a valuable resource in planning your next business event.

HON. LOUISE ASHER, MP Minister for Tourism and Major Events

Embracing the southern coastline all the way from Werribee to Warrnambool, the Geelong and Great Ocean Road region offers some of Australia’s most versatile conference and event opportunities. Discover venues in amongst inspiring scenery, attractions and experiences.

With waterfront views from its front yard and the Great Ocean Road in its back yard, Geelong is a stunning, feature-filled package. Geelong’s Waterfront is abuzz with action. Where else can you ride a jet boat, a sea plane, a chopper and an antique carousel, all in one day?

This vibrant city blends grand historical buildings with contemporary architecture, commercial hubs with brilliant cultural treasures, major shopping centres with multicultural dining and shopping strips. Compact and comprehensive, Geelong packs a powerful payload of possibilities into a walkable radius.

Just 15 minutes drive from Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula beckons with welcoming wineries, beachy lifestyle and the villages of Queenscliff, Drysdale, Portarlington, St Leonards, Point Lonsdale, Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.

With one of Victoria’s newest gourmet must-dos, The Bellarine Taste Trail, this region abounds in innovative food and wine experiences. It’s a melting pot of local arts and culture and a dynamo for water-based leisure from snorkeling to jet-skiing, swimming with dolphins, surfing, kayaking, fishing and diving.

Once you hit the Surf Coast, majestic cliffs hold court over surfer-dotted waves, rainforests greet the ocean and Aussie surf culture claims its origins. Both a journey and a destination, the Surf Coast stretches from Torquay through Anglesea to Lorne and beyond. It offers up peaceful coves for safe swimming and crashing waves for unforgettable surfing. It’s a place to gather, to reflect, to rejuvenate and to lose your hang-ups.

As kilometres of sandy, golden beaches give way to coastal cliffs and the Twelve Apostles, you know you’re travelling the Great Ocean Road – a world-renowned drive hugging the coastline to capture every vista. You can then explore the distinctive seaside towns like Apollo Bay, Port Campbell and Warrnambool.

The Otway Ranges form a spectacular backdrop stretching between Lorne and around Cape Otway. Tall timber stretches skywards creating habitats teeming with birds, plant life and fauna. For tourists and team builders the Otways State and National Parks offer dynamic activities including sea kayaking, mountain biking, quad biking, coastal trail trekking and horse riding.

The Otway hinterland is a rich rural district where you can sample gourmet cheeses, meander through wineries, pick your own farm berries and get in touch with your inner ‘foodie’ on the Otway Harvest Trail. Nearby are historic towns and villages like Colac, Winchelsea, Forrest and Bambra.

The magical Geelong and Great Ocean Road region makes nature nearer, breathing easier and thinking clearer. It ripples with possibilities. Your mission? Deciding what to do first.

Across these campuses, the University offers more than 140 academic programs within four faculties - Arts and Education; Business and Law; Health and Science and Technology.

Deakin aims to offer education programs and research facilities that contribute to the economic success of the Geelong community.

Deakin’s research performance and reputation are impressive, winning the university substantial funding allocations for 2012 from the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council.

The Geelong Technology Precinct (GTP) at the Waurn Ponds campus, offers significant opportunities for collaborative and contract research hosting numerous technology-oriented businesses using its “proof of concept” and “industrial prototyping” facilities.

The new $100-million Australian Future Fibres Research and Innovation Centre will position Geelong as an international hub for fibre science and materials research.

BioGeelong is an industry based network created in 2005 to grow the Geelong region’s biotech capability as part of a vision to become globally significant in the sector.

Approximately 450 researchers are employed in the region in biotech or life sciences; their incomes alone contribute more than $15 million to the local economy.

The BioGeelong cluster brought together an array of Geelong-based biotechnology enterprises and organisations, including Barwon Health, ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals, CSIRO Animal Health Laboratory, Deakin University, Gordon Institute of TAFE, Pathcare Consulting Pathologists and the City of Greater Geelong. These entities formed a Steering Group which has since driven a energetic program agenda.

The core focus is innovation, productivity and competitive advantage with activities centred on:

• developing biotechnology industry development in partnership with all levels of government

• advocating regional industry

• boosting investment by hosting delegations and acting as a point of contact for those exploring collaborative or partnership opportunities in the region

• promoting the region’s capabilities, strengths and potential

• delivering a dynamic networking environment.

BioGeelong’s foundation organisations have since been joined by many others as the push to reposition the region as one of Australia’s top five biotechnology precincts continues.

Major initiatives of BioGeelong include:

• advocating development of a Geelong Centre for Emerging Infectious Disease

• exploring Geelong’s potential as a research hub for biofuel

• development of an Asset Register detailing the region’s biotech-related contacts, facilities, equipment, human resources, training and funding sources.

www.biogeelong.com.au

The Geelong region has a fast-evolving reputation as a centre of knowledge, industry and innovation.

A new breed of personalities leads the collaborations and fresh thinking that drive the momentum. Through our region’s key industry clusters and research institutions these experts are within reach.

GFCC formed in 2005, bringing together Geelong food industry enterprises to develop commercial initiatives based on “co-products”.

Food manufacturing (centred on seafood, dairy, meat and poultry) contributes $1 billion to the regional economy and supports thousands of livelihoods.

Amongst the GFCC successes to date are the establishment of ASCo Fertilisers (producing sustainable, environmentally friendly fertiliser products from waste seafood), Champions Fare (a retail initiative that enables small producers to trial their products in larger supermarket environments) and Ambaco Pty Ltd, which operates one of only three facilities in Australia value-adding to seafood with crumbing, coating, forming and more.

GFCC works closely with Victoria University on R&D activities, giving industry the chance to direct the research agenda. GFCC/Victoria University relationship puts a collaborative $20-$30 million R&D budget within the collective reach of cluster members.

The GFCC program has evolved to meet the needs of its members for competitive, innovative and intelligent commercial solutions that exploit the distinctive skills and industry credentials of our region’s food processors.

Wayne Street, Cluster Manager, Geelong Food Co-products Cluster

Wayne is a Graduate in Mathematics and Earth Sciences and an Adjunct Associate Professor in Food Sciences at Victoria University. His involvement in the agribusiness and food processing sectors spans three decades.

Wayne is the communication and action bridge that enables clever collaboration between GFCC member enterprises. He simplifies the organisational burden for members by managing the various commercial entities arising from cluster activities.

Wayne energetically shares the cluster knowledge and advocates the commercial benefits of collaboration. Factory tours, presentations and information meetings punctuate his diary.

www.gfcc.com.au

The Geelong Region ICT Cluster’s vision is to make the Geelong region a major Victorian ICT (Information & Communication Technology) precinct.

Established in 2009, ICT Geelong’s foundation membership includes industry leaders, education experts and community leaders representing the region’s major organisations.

ICT Geelong brings together ideas, priorities and skills of the members to a responsive program of four main pillars: investment attraction; R&D and commercialisation; skills and education; and, networking and collaboration.

Flagship projects include the $50,000 Invention Test, regarded as one of Australia’s best invention pitching competitions. It will coincide with the Technology Entrepreneurship Forum, with its line-up of world-class speakers.

ICT Geelong is developing an IT R&D and Commercialisation Strategy to evaluate global IT trends and identify the potential of highly-niched areas of development.

In December 2011, government announced funding to support at least the next two years of ICT Geelong’s valuable work.

Craig Hill, Manager, ICT Geelong

Craig’s background as an experienced business advisor, including a lengthy stint with Australia’s leading franchise development consultancy, holds him in good stead for delivering ICT Geelong’s targeted programs.

His CV includes a Bachelor of Commerce and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment. His accumulated understanding of the needs of business and industry equip Craig for making compelling business and investment cases, securing funding and grants, and building meaningful one-on-one relationships.

Craig is quick to credit Chairman Robert Reed, and the steering group, as the driving force behind ICT Geelong. Regular stakeholder meetings, annual visioning sessions and a healthy level of support and ideas from the membership are critical.

The Geelong Manufacturing Council (GMC) works across the local manufacturing sector comprising 500 companies and 14,000 employees, along with key stakeholders.

Since inception in 1998, the GMC has embraced core themes of: positioning, networking and lobbying; encouraging excellence; building industrial synergies; developing skills; and growing advanced technologies.

The GMC’s vision is to shape Geelong’s future as a leading world-class manufacturing centre via programs adding value for local manufacturers, attracting investment, advocating opportunities and facilitating collaboration.

Creation of Engineering Network Geelong (ENG) has been a key initiative. ENG has 46 engineering industry members and is identifying and pursuing opportunities for regional industry.

In 2012, the GMC is undertaking a leading innovation program which will increase companies’ opportunities to innovate in collaboration with Deakin University.

In recent years the GMC has delivered leading programs centred on sustainability and lean manufacturing. An industry leadership program planned for 2012, continues that focus.

David Peart, Executive Officer, Geelong Manufacturing Council

David’s GMC role has included building close relationships with a range of visionary industry leaders and decision-makers.

He has worked with regional industry for 20 years and been an advocate for regional industry, investment and employment. He has appeared before government and parliamentary inquiries, and been involved in many lobbying delegations to Canberra.

With qualifications including a Commerce Degree, an Honours Degree in Economics, a Diploma with the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Master of Business Administration (MBA), David has led the growth of the GMC in members and influence, while driving cluster development and industry specific strategic plans across the manufacturing industry.

Geelong &The Bellarine

Recognised as Victoria’s largest regional city, Geelong is home to over 250,000 people, and growing. Conferencing injects some $55 million annually into the regional market, highlighting the value of our multi-sized conference and venue capability positioned within walking distance of the CBD and stunning waterfront.

Our cultural, retail, dining, leisure and commercial facilities rival those of any capital city. In Geelong, there is always something exciting to do or see around the next corner.

Geelong is flourishing in its confident new identity as a world leader in knowledge and innovation, education and research, manufacturing and services. It’s a ‘go-to place’ for investment, professionals and big-thinkers.

As a university town, Geelong is especially noted for innovative research in biosciences, medicine and advanced materials, and for people willing to share their expertise.

Several conference and event venues can cater for 1000 delegates with an array of high-quality accommodation within close proximity. Dozens of smaller venues, each with their own character, offer options for small or mid-sized gatherings.

On the doorstep of Geelong you will find The Bellarine. This rural seaside peninsula has evolved into a premium conferencing destination with brilliant venues and outstanding incentive activities. You can smell the refreshing sea air from the conference room!

Within 90 minutes drive of Melbourne you will be treated to majestic seaside hotels and resorts, enticing coastal towns and villages and great local produce.

INCLuDING QuEENSCLIFF AND WERRIBEE

Thriving Geelong pulsates with excitement, offering some of the state’s roomiest regional conference spaces, world-class hotels and incentives that delegates can only imagine.

The Carousel

www.BusinessEventsGeelong.com.au20

Page 21: The Great Ocean Road Planners Guide 2012-13

The Bellarine has been building a reputation as a food and wine destination. Your delegates will love being treated to many of the gourmet offerings of the region including boutique wineries, restaurants and quaint cafés and fresh produce such as goats cheese, olive oil and seafood.

Classic Queenscliff is a step back in time with its elegant heritage architecture, intriguing maritime history, award-winning wineries and grand Victorian-era hotels. With contemporary conference infrastructure, Queenscliff makes for a quintessential event place that will leave everyone satisfied.

You can feel the history when walking through the town, Queenscliff’s charm is unique. Treat your team to fresh seafood and brisk sea air in a coastal village where people have been flocking to gather and relax for more than a century.

Mid-way between Melbourne and Geelong, is Werribee - an unexpected “other world” for conference planners.

From the wildlife and African-themed slumber safaris of the Werribee Open Range Zoo to the lush oasis gardens of historic Werribee Mansion and a chance to laze the afternoon away sipping champagne while watching polo from a field-side marquis, Werribee always amazes.

Werribee’s dining options seem endless with “eat streets” and riverfront cafés aplenty.

You’ll find unique venues with multiple options for groups ranging from 10-180, ideally positioned within easy access of a myriad of accommodation choices and local attractions.

GreatOcean RoadINCLuDING SuRF COAST, OTWAYS & WARRNAMBOOL

Deliver your delegates an unforgettable, moving feast. Take the winding coast road from Geelong to the official start of the Great Ocean Road in Torquay then past famous Bells Beach and Lorne.

Torquay’s new and modern resort-style conferencing venues are located on the ocean’s doorstep. They offer unique meeting options for 10–450 delegates right in the heart of Aussie surf culture’s capital.

The world-famous Rip Curl Pro surfing competition is held at Bells Beach during Easter each year. Surfing passion is expressed everywhere from the flourishing surf clothing industry and its popular factory outlets to a museum dedicated to all things surfing.

Delegates can wander through ancient rainforests, learn to surf, play golf, ride a bike (or a horse) or climb a lighthouse.

The sea-side town of Lorne is one of Victoria’s best-known conference destinations, with accommodation capacity up to 550 people. This coastal town is a magical mix of natural beauty and sophisticated conference, resort and holiday infrastructure. Its cosmopolitan atmosphere is both energising and inspiring. Sidewalk cafés, fine restaurants and specialty shops abound within a short walk of golden sandy beaches.

People cross the globe and Australia to journey the Great Ocean Road – one of the world’s most exhilarating scenic drives. This ribbon of unrivalled experience threads its way through first-class conference country.
