Liberty is the most valuable premise for our country’s founding. There are many tenets from which the Founders drew to create our governing document, The Constitution of the United States of America. This document was boldly and eloquently put forth 222 years ago on September 17, 1787.

Since then, each succeeding generation has dealt with many seemingly grave issues of their time, yet when viewed through the prism of history these issues pale in perspective to what we face now as a country.

This publication is not focused on topical issues and emotions which drive us apart, but rather this publication will highlight and cheer the many amazing, positive, productive, and sustainable activities thriving in our country and our commu-nities.

We believe that our country is not only built upon the effective foundation of checks and balances, but that we still hold the power, as citizens and as con-sumers, to create the positive changes necessary to see the American Dream thrive.

Small businesses can and will PROSPER - they generate half of the gross domestic product in the private-sector. They are an integral part of local economic devel-opment and a thread for communities to keep their “dollars” circulating amongst those upon whom they depend.

We must actively THINK and LIVE ac-cording to our roles as citizens – we have to hold our elected officials accountable and praise those in our communities that are standing up for our freedoms.

Sustainable FOOD systems are critical to our economic viability, and we stand for farmers, ranchers, and producers who provide us with the agricultural means necessary to live. We understand the cru-cial nature of a sustainable food supply, one that can be achieved by local produc-ers using value-chains that enhance the economic development of the people and cities in which they operate.

Our RESOURCES as a nation are critical to our new energy economy and to the health and wellness of our children and grandchildren for generations to come. Our energy, land, air, and water hold economic promise for us, however we must also be cognizant of these resourc-es’ means, and effectively plan for the future.

We understand that the ARTS and CUL-TURE of our communities give students and people the creative outlets necessary to express themselves in an intellectually stimulating environment. We believe that TRAVEL is an inherent part of the American dream, and that as we move around the country, whether it is for busi-ness, family, or pleasure - it is a founda-tional part of our economy.

We must ACT - we must actively partici-

pate in our communities and engage both our system of governance as well as the economic ecosystem in which we live. We act by spending our money, by writ-ing our representatives, and by voting.

And we must focus much time and at-tention on our NEXT generation, those that will be our future industry leaders, scientists, farmers, and soldiers. Our youth and our students are crucial to our future and we must be willing to support them and help pave the road to prosper-ity. Honoring our elders sets an example for the next generation—we show all generations have value to contribute ensuring a legacy of wisdom and grace will safeguard our civil and productive society.

We are coming to a community near you, to serve you with Local and National content focused on Freedom, on Sustain-ability, and on all of the good news that we have at our finger-tips to take each and every ounce of our energy and move in a positive direction of change – change that WE make – change that comes from us, as Americans.

I am an American – a human being residing in the United States of America, a citizen who has come here or who resides in this country.

Liberty is both my vocation and my avocation – it is what I am.

You may wonder why it is necessary to express the purpose of explaining what I am. I am a mys-tery, and sadly I have been taken for granted as a mere incident and without background.

“This is a species of the grievous error in which mankind cannot too long persist without peril. For, the wise G. K. Chesterton observed, ‘We are perishing for want of wonder, not for want of wonders’.” (Read, 1999).

I, American, as simple as I may seem, do in fact warrant your wonder, for if you can understand me better, if you can be more aware of what I am, then it can help save the freedom that mankind could so easily lose.

Simple? Yet no one knows exactly how to make me. I am but a human, a citizen, a member of a community and country, and yet there are innu-merable antecedents to what I am.It is impossible to explain all of the antecedents that made me, however it is possible to name just a few.

My family tree begins on every continent in every country through most every part of the world. From deserts to the tropics, the mountains to the oceans, the world was the starting point for me. Think of all the people involved in the innumer-able journeys through good times and bad to get me to where I sit today. Think of the man-power, the machinery, the technology, the will-power to get me here today. Think of the millions of trans-actions amongst people, the billions of words, the countless moments of inquiry and faith that made it possible to be in this moment.

Starting in far-away places, my ancestors made choices to seek freedom and prosperity. In making a choice to come here, the American dream was alive and loved. It was not just a dream; it was the reality of the journey, the faith, the mo-tion. My ances-tors came to America to work and keep what they worked for, in a place where liberty was alive and responsibil-

ity was respected and honored.

Consider the people who have come to America. White, black, brown; European, African, Asian, Hispanic; people who do not cling to color nor to class nor to ethnicity. For once you are here, you are American – this is the melting pot, and we are all the same, we are all Americans. People who have come here as people, people who have come here knowing and believing that we are endowed by a Creator with certain unalienable Rights, and that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. The journey has not always been pleasant or good. The creation of America held many tragic incidents involving the very people that She now desires to protect. That is the road and the journey that exists, and I must move for-ward in an effort to do better, as an individual, as an American. We can learn from our mistakes. Consider the technology that has moved us here. Inventions, the revolution in industry, and the revolution with communication – all of these over thousands of years have contributed to my journey. Although my life cycle is short, the experiences I have are created on the shoulders of giants (Newton, 1676). Piece by piece, moment by moment, I am standing here today because of these human discoveries, theories, interventions, and practices.

Consider the human desire that has moved us here. Human beings from around the world, people who work hard, study, love, and crave the freedom that allows them to do those things. Consider the faith – regardless of religion or origin – consider the faith of the people who want to move forward, want to protect what they love, want to be free in their just pursuit of happiness. No one knows how to make an American, even though the 307+ million Americans have a part of shaping each other every day. “There isn’t a sin-gle person in all these millions… who contributes more than a tiny, infinitesimal bit of know-how.” (Read, 1999). Each day a citizen may decide to read a newspaper, watch a television show, or go to school, however the other citizens will never truly know how this affects them – we just know that it does. None of us know what the other millions of Americans want, however we are still all able to co-exist and prosper. None of us know exactly how this works, but we know that we are able to make transactions and decisions when we have the freedom to do so.

There is no master-mind dictating to people what they should do, what they should want, or where they should work. For over two hundred years, the country of America has been able to grow without the master planning of its future. There have been mistakes, and more recently attacks on Her freedom, however the 307+ millions of Americans who are a part of my country can still make informed decisions. This “absence of a master mind, of anyone dictating or forcibly directing these countless actions which bring me into being. No trace of such a person can be found. Instead, we find the Invisible Hand at work.” (Read, 1999).

We cannot “make an American”. The Invisible Hand (Adam Smith), the liberty present in our country, and the free market where we all stand equally as consumers, are a part of a complex combination of miracles. America is where you can find me, in “the configuration of creative hu-man energies—millions of tiny know-hows con-figurating naturally and spontaneously in response to human necessity and desire and in the absence of any human master-minding!” (Read, 1999). We are free men and women, there is no greater miracle.

I, American, although made from many different races, classes, and religions, do not cling to those as testimony for how others should act or be. I, American, although a part of a social system do not expect a social system, I take responsibility for what and who I am. I, American, although faced with displeasure, anger, and poverty, righ-teousness, happiness, and prosperity, do not ex-pect from anyone anything other than interaction in a marketplace where I can work, purchase, and sell goods and services without the intervention of a master-plan that tries to decide what is best for me. I, American, understand what I am charged with and accept the responsibility and prosperity that accompanies such “risk”. Having the liberty to make my decisions, is all I ask for.I, American, in a country that has had millions of immigrants come to Her for liberty and the opportunity to pursue their dreams, believe in the creative interactions that have made our prosper-ity possible so far.

“The lesson I have to teach is this: Leave all creative energies uninhibited. Merely organize so-ciety to act in harmony with this lesson. Let soci-ety’s legal apparatus remove all obstacles the best it can. Permit these creative know-hows freely to flow. Have faith that free men and women will respond to the Invisible Hand. This faith will be confirmed.” (Read, 1999).

I, American, seemingly simple and often misun-derstood, believe in the miracle of my creation. I believe in the liberty that rewards responsibility. I believe in the free men and women who are my fellow citizens. I, American, believe.

Honoring Our TroopsLima-Tango-Delta, in the NATO phonetic alphabet, stands for the letters “LTD”. This is for our texters and soldier-texters out there...who use this acronym for ‘Living The Dream’ every day.

This common phrase in our soldiers’ communications old and new, help bring and bond together veterans and serving soldiers, just through differ-ent delivery methods. This is a new column dedicated to the words of our young men and women who are serving, and the words of wisdom from those who have served – straight from the people who we are defending our country and our liberty.

We are looking for contributors, and we can’t wait to share the words of our men and women who are serving our country. Please e-mail us at: [email protected], and put “LTD” in the subject-line.

“A man who does not think for himself does not think at all.” - Oscar Wilde

I first met Gary Johnson in Albuquer-que, New Mexico before he was elect-ed Governor. It was a handshake I’ll never forget, as he asked for my vote. This man was genuine, sincere and the Black Sheep candidate who no one had heard of, because he had “no political experience.” I had just moved to Santa Fe and had little idea what the political dynamic of New Mexico was like. I did hear from the people I knew and met in New Mexico, including some very long-time, multi-generational residents, that the state was in turmoil, and that this guy I had met would never have a chance to win as a Republican in a largely Democratic state - especial-ly a candidate that the Republican party itself wasn’t necessarily endorsing at that time. Even back in the 1990’s, the Black Sheep were demonized and laughed at by the establishment parties - wasted votes they still say.

When they tallied up the “wasted votes”, Gary Johnson went on to win the election as Governor, as well as an easy reelection for a second term. At the time, I was a business owner in New Mexico who appreciated his perspective, hard work and honesty. I worked with many other high-profile business owners who were very skeptical of who Gary was and how he would govern. We grew to realize how important his contributions and “work with everyone” attitude was, and that his method was working. He held no agenda other than serving the best interest of the citizens of New Mexico.

During his second term in office I was invited to attend a few luncheons Gary hosted at the Governor’s Mansion. I was being recognized for my charitable contributions along with the work of many others. I found a man there who had not changed since the first time I met him - the same hand-shake, and he meant it - still gracious, genuine, honest! Who was this man? I have been to the White House, shook the hands of more than one President, along with a few other members of Congress and other Governors. Never have I met someone like Gary Johnson.

Governor Johnson has been getting around again lately. He’s been on many of the talking-head shows of all the networks and touted as a possible Black Sheep Candidate for President. A Republican with Libertarian leanings, he is popular with many Independents, Moderate Democrats, Libertarians and many Conservatives and Tea Partiers. The more they know him, the more they like his message; Gary Johnson backs it up with experience, common sense,

honesty and dialog. He has a track record of actionable and positive results. He works hard.

The Our America Initiative is his current project. He chairs this 501(c)(4) non-profit, and he has authored a book, The Seven Principals of Good Government. He outlines his seven principles on the website and advocates for smaller, more effective, less intrusive government.

Mission Statement: OUR America Initiative seeks to broaden the parameters of the public policy debate of cur-rent topics in the national arena. We look to enlighten the population about civil liberties, free enterprise, limited gov-ernment, and traditional American values. It is our aim to increase the amount of discussion and involvement regard-ing all-important issues.

A consistent talking point that comes up on many of the talk shows is his position on the legalization of drugs - the hot-button issue he talks about openly. He says what many people are thinking but most are unwilling to freely talk about. I, personally, detest drugs and have no respect for the people who have little respect for themselves by using drugs. Like the Mexican border issue and many other agencies, the “drug war” has been viewed as something the general public is skeptical about and that the effectiveness has not been a government success. Drug problems have gotten worse, and another giant government program keeps getting bigger. I remember when Reagan declared the “war on drugs.” Honestly, like so many others, I haven’t seen results that I am happy with. I think I’m like many who

question the direction we have gone and the overall results for our money, time, and blood invested. Johnson merely poses the question, “Do you think that the war on drugs is working?” He, like most of us, says, “No,” and he backs it up with the facts. He has the courage to talk about it, and openly advocates for change in the form of reasonable legalization to solve the majority of the problems we currently have. You can’t change minds overnight, and laws take a long time to enact even when you have a majority of backers. Like Johnson, I think it’s time to have a harder look at the issues surround-ing drugs and start an accountable, new solution.

I had the pleasure of having a phone interview with Governor Johnson for this article. Like an old friend, it was like we shook hands, and the conversa-tion continued from the past. I do not know him on a personal level; he would

not recognize me on the street. But he has that personable, likable presence that makes you feel comfortable enough to have constructive dialog even when you disagree. He is a man I would be proud to vote for again to restore pride and respect for America. A man of the people - E pluribus unum, “Out of many, one.” He will unite America; we will become one again. Who is he? Someone you should know. Someone who could be one of the most significant people contributing to liberty and freedom of this great country: unassuming, pro-fessional, very humble and a competitor, over-achiever and the Black Sheep we should all listen to. His handshake is his word--a man of genuine ethical integrity. America needs to know Gary Johnson.

Genesis Soil Rite Genesis Soil Rite - “Correcting the Cause”Soil is an incredible creation; it has the ability to communicate. If you truly listen, it will tell you exactly what it needs. Is your soil telling you a story of poverty or prosperity? When soil is tilled, disked, or plowed and it has hardpan, plowpan, compaction, or lumps, your soil is communicating that minerals are bonding together in unhealthy patterns and will not be available to the plants we want to produce.

Without exception, hardpan, plowpan, compaction, lumps and clumps are letting us know there is a deficiency of AVAILABLE calcium. When P.H. of soil is too high or too low, there is a deficient amount of available calcium. Balance the minerals in your soil and your soil’s P.H. will naturally balance itself.

Alkali or high salt soil is screaming for help. During the degradation of these areas your soil is telling you exactly what’s going on. For example: when dandelions grow, salt is starting to cause a problem. Next, if you no-tice along with dandelions, kochia is starting to grow, the salt content is steadily increas-ing. The next salt loving plant to move in will be foxtail. If foxtail cannot absorb the ever increasing salt content of you soil; the soil then goes dormant or alkali. Several things can be thanked for the increased salt in soil. Many chemicals and fertilizers contain salt as a carrier, preservative, or safety agent. Wet years and irrigation also bring salts to the sur-face. The beneficial bacteria in the soil does not like salt and has trouble living in a saline environment. The benefits and jobs that these bacteria do are now negatively altered. Stalks, mulch, and organic matter are now be-ing oxidized rather than being absorbed into the earth. This carbon is not being converted into sugar. When the sugar content of the soil decreases, the sugar content of the plant will also decrease. Low sugar soil and plants give off high infrared, which fits right into plant feeding insect’s vision. The high infrared can be seen up to eight miles away by plant feeding insects. When your insect problem

increases, you apply more insecticide, which probably has salt, which now adds to your already existing problem.

It is common knowledge that a sugar content of 13% or more is very beneficial for your plant’s insect resistance. We know that these insects do not have a pancreas and cannot digest high sugar fiber. We also know that if sugar content is low, plants will never grow to the extent of their genetic potential. These plants will also be low in minerals, vitamins, amino acids and have poor general nutrition. These plants are also losing out on their share of free nitrogen, which makes up over 78% of the air we breathe. These same low sugar plants have also lost some of the ability to draw moisture from the air, which now in-creases the effects of a drought, or increases irrigation costs.

The deficiency of available calcium also plagues your soil and plants with other problems. Weed growth tells a story. Cockle Burr grows in the deficiency of the available mineral silver. Bull Thistle grows in the de-ficiency of available zinc. Musk and Canada Thistles grow in the deficiency of available phosphorus and Leafy Spurge grows in the deficiency of available nickel. Every mineral has a job.

When these minerals are tied up or not avail-able, this now causes landowners to “react to symptoms” which is how chemical compa-nies prosper. Knowledge is power; and when we understand the job and importance of each mineral, we can “correct the cause”.Calcium is said to be the “Foundation of Life” and is involved in many metabolic and physiological functions. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in our bodies, giving us structure and electrically fueling our hearts. It is also the most abundant mineral in the bodies of all animals. Looking at the food chain, common sense tells us that calcium should also be the most abundant mineral in the soil. Available Calcium is the referee, and the mediator, with phosphorus being the

transporter of minerals in the soil. Phor-phorus is the work horse needed to transport the other minerals to the plants, so without available calcium and phorphorusnone of the other minerals can work at the efficiency needed for optimum plant production. When looking at calcium, the molecular weight is quite heavy and science tells us that it carries a double positive electrical charge. Conventional markets offer double positive calcium that has very low availability and very high P.H. Until recently, Dolomite or Gypsum have been about our only choices for calcium. When looking at soil tests and P.H. levels, options for balancing available calcium have been less than desirable. To accurately determine your calcium needs, your soil test must measure mineral content on an AVAILABLE BASIS, anything else is WORTHLESS.

Modern science has made great strides in un-derstanding the requirements of mineral sup-plementation for soil and plants. Soil Works LLC has found that by using a negative based calcium supplement, the amount of calcium needed per acre is dramatically reduced and the benefits are exponentially returned, When a heavy negative based calcium is applied to your soil, there is a natural attraction to the molecularly light and positive charged salt particles. The sheer weight of the calcium grabs onto the salt and carries it down to the subsoil away from your feeder roots and your aerobic bacteria, allowing them to proliferate and do their job once again at the efficiency that is healthy and financially rewarding to you.

Genesis is a proprietary blend of all natural vitamins, minerals, amino acid, herbs and spices; and contains a negative-based calcium which aids in your natural soil-building pro-gram. Genesis will start decreasing salts, al-lowing beneficial bacteria to reproduce at the rate nature intended, also unlocking minerals that will now be available to your plants. This negative based calcium can increase foliar absorption of nutrients. In addition, this

negative based calcium in Genesis will also start transporting nutrients to the feeder roots. We all know the benefits of a well-balanced meal, whether that meal is for humans, plants or animals. Other benefits of balancing the proper available calcium in your soil include:

• Decreased soil compaction• Decreased plowpan • Decreased hardpan• Decreased salt content in topsoil• Decreased fertilizer requirements• Decreased herbicide usage• Decreased insecticide usage• Decreased irrigation costs• Increase in beneficial bacteria activ-ity• Balancing P.H.

Proper supplementation and balancing of minerals will increase your aerobic zone, in turn increasing the cubic area of nutrient intake and root depth.

We, at Soil Works LLC, and Miramar Man-agement and Consulting realize there are two levels of plant life. The upper level of plant life, which produces food for animals and humans. These plants enjoy a high sugar content and a properly balanced nutrient rich available source of minerals. The lower level of undesirable plant life, we call “the janito-rial weeds”, enjoy a low sugar environment and an imbalance of minerals. They grow in an attempt to correct an imbalance problem.

A book by Jay L. McCaman “Weeds and Why They Grow” is a great way to verify what we have said here. We can assist you in engineering your soil to grow upper level plants that will benefit your bottom line.If you have grown weary along with your soil in “Reacting to Symptoms” and once again want to be the “steward of your soil” as nature intends, we are here to assist you in “Correcting the Cause”. ARTS/CuLTuREThat’s how Artist and Gal-lery Owner Jeff Tabor de-scribes his love and apprecia-tion of color. His Gallery on Historic Canyon Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico reflects his interests in color with the large assortment of artists represented including his own works.

The Art Exchange Gallery is a small gallery tucked away just off the street at 618 Canyon Road about midway down Canyon. But don’t let the size of this space fool you. Jeff has over 40 artists represented and a diverse grouping of styles and medi-ums. What is also surprising is that you can sometimes find works by Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Sulton, Frank Stella and other famous ‘blue chip’ collectable artists. You soon realize Jeff has been in the Fine Art Trade and a gallery owner for over 20 years. The Art Exchange Gallery also has a location in Austin Texas downtown on 5th street. The Austin Gallery is a large and open space also with a wide variety of art available.

A prolific landscape painter Tabor, whose native New Mexican roots and upbringing gave him an apprecia-tion and understanding of its landscape and lend a warm, upbeat effect to his work. His paintings portray the vastness of the southwestern expanse often times juxtaposed against the positive warmth of a sunset, providing a rich con-trast of emotion.

In reflecting on his artist influences , Tabor states, “I have been painting, drawing and doing artwork since I can remember. My father is an artist and, whenever he put his palette down, I would pick it up to use the leftover paint. I grew up on the plains of New Mexico within view of the dis-tant mountains, so there is a feeling of light, color, and clear air in most of my landscape paintings, including those painted in other places I’ve called

home – Texas, New England and Africa.” One gallery owner appreciatively commented that Jeff is the only artist she knows who paints Boston city scenes with Santa Fe colors. Elizabeth Bradley states, “His landscapes reflect serenity by his mas-terful use of light”.

Concerning the style of his work, Tabor comments, “I use an econ-omy of shape and composition and an overstated color scheme. My intent is that the viewer will be uplifted and feel a suggestion of New Mexico air when looking at my work.” Tabor often works from memory, allowing him to work with the essence of the mood and feeling of a scene rath-er than the photographic quality of the location. “it is my aim to amplify the color and simplify the design in order to convey a clear and concise message.”

Although his medium of choice is oil, he often works with acrylic, watercolor, gouache and print-making to achieve the desired results. His work is character-ized by bold colors and the use of broad patterns that simplify his subject matter, infusing them with a timeless quality.

Tabor is an established artist and has received more than twenty-five national and international awards for his work. His work

can be found in numer-ous corporate and private national and international collections. Born in 1951 in Clovis, New Mexico, Ta-bor graduated from Abilene Christian University with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1973 and from Florida State Univer-sity with a Master of Fine Arts in 1975.

Although Tabor enjoys talking about his work, he is also expressive of how God has blessed him, not only with his talents but with his wonderful family, wife, children and grand-children.

“Victory or Death” – William B. Travis, 1836The Alamo http://thealamo.org/main/index.php Now America’s 7th largest city, San Antonio has a welcoming charm and sophistica-tion that is lost among other cities. It is a very unique and personal experience for every visitor and local. Deep in the heart of Texas and very near the center of down-town is The Alamo. This sacred space was the last stand for American Heroes: James Bowie, David Crockett, William B. Travis and many others. The “Defenders of the Alamo” came to symbolize courage and sacrifice for the cause of liberty. The Alamo is owned by the State of Texas and operated by the Daughters of the Re-public of Texas. Over 2.5 million people visit the Alamo each year from around the world. Funding for operations is provided by private donations – there is no monetary help from local, state or federal governments - setting the example of American phi-lanthropy and generosity at any level; setting the example of how a non-profit should be run! A visit to the Alamo is always humbling and inspirational no matter how much time you have. There is always free admission to one of America’s iconic treasures.

The River Walkhttp://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/ Just a block away from the Alamo Plaza down Crockett Street is the famed River Walk. The restaurants, shopping and performing arts are what really bring the commu-nity together to share with visitors one of America’s most unique gathering places. The dynamic of being around so many people from other places on the planet is eye opening and unexpected. You can hear many languages being spoken on the River Walk. It’s a microcosm of business and tourism gatherings from around the world. Fine eateries line the water, from elegant fair to barbeque to the completely inappropriate “Dick’s Last Resort” which is worth a visit and anything but politically or socially correct. You can also find the usual suspects like Starbucks and even a CVS Pharmacy. Some jaded locals might tell you the River Walk is too touristy and you can certainly find the ‘This’n that kitsch’ - but it’s not dominate, and for the most part a good blend, something for everyone, as it should be, and all are welcome.

The Southwest School of Art and Crafthttp://www.swschool.org/ Also downtown and accessible from the River Walk is The Southwest School of Art and Craft - If you are an artist, an aspiring arts and crafts enthusiast, or an established collector, you will find the largest and most comprehensive learning and workshop programs I have seen to date. The facilities, equipment and at-mosphere brings forward creativity with vision and touch. The docent tours the historic buildings and grounds, provides a heightened sense of environment and accomplishment abound. This is one of the most unique arts campuses I have visited. The campus is inspirational, technical, serious, and welcoming. Es-tablished and emerging artists and crafts-men exhibit their works on campus at the museum and also sell their fare through the gift shop. If you collect art, this is where to buy. The Copper Kitchen is the ‘on campus’ restaurant - worth the stop and very popular with locals for lunch! You can also find an Art-o-mat machine on campus. This is a restored and retooled cigarette vending machine that vends small boxes of real art for $5.00 including San Antonio artists. You can find Art-o-mats around the country at other art destinations. A fun stop and great conversation memento from your trip! www.swschool.org

Pearlhttp://pearlbrewery.com/ The Pearl Brewery restoration and rebirth – this is a snappy high-toned area that welcomes everyone from hipsters to cowboys. A blend of historic space and

contemporary vision - elegant and sophisticated, simple in form. Here you’ll find The Culinary Institute of America, The Aveda Institute, The Synergy Studio, The Nature Conservancy, Farm-to-Table Restaurant, Il Sogno (The Dream) Restaurant, Sandbar Fish House, Market Restaurant, and the weekly Farmers Market out back by the Mu-seum Reach section of the River Walk. This is a developing area with new things com-ing on-line so be watching and visit often. The complex also boasts the largest solar installation in the state. www.pearlbrewery.com

There is a lot more to see and do! Like so many other visitors, I was in town for just a few days, and found several jewels to talk about. My interests are always history, arts, culture and food. I always need the quick version and later, I may take it into more detail. That Texas hospitality you hear about ensures that I will be back for more!

Vermejo Park RanchTRAVELVermejo Park Ranch is a private mountain resort and working bison ranch in northern New Mexico. In the fall of 1996, philanthropist and businessman Ted Turner, acquired this vast property making it the largest of his ex-tensive land holdings. Turner retained and improved the guest operations, sold the cattle, reintroduced bison and focused on ecological projects to restore and preserve the ranch.

Vermejo is open to a limited number of guests by reser-vation only. The ranch offers lake and stream fishing, ecological and wildlife observation tours, shooting skeet or sports-clays, limited hunting, and professional corpo-rate retreat services. A large focus is the restoration and enhancement of the Ranch’s many diverse ecosystems, ranging from short grass prairie on the east to the alpine tundra on the west.

The Good American Post was invited to see Vermejo’s latest edition, the new Costilla Lodge before its official opening this last summer. The massive high country lodge is compliant with ecological standards with timbers harvested from the ranch and careful detail has been given to its surroundings. Starting in January 2011 you can be a winter guest at Costilla and enjoy its lodging, gourmet meals, snow shoeing, sledding, nordic skiing, ice fishing and wildlife observation – a custom winter adven-ture is yours for the making. During the summer months the focus is nature and eco-tours. You are provided with a custom designed all-inclusive program May through September.

Nature-tourism is a growing trend - we have seen a surge in demand for nature-orientated travel across the country. Vermejo Park Ranch is the ideal destination for experiencing nature - it provides an experience equal to

that of our national parks, however without the crowds that sometimes ensue. Vermejo is the largest contiguous deeded ranch in New Mexico, containing 588,000 acres; it has elevations ranging from 6,400 feet to 12,960 feet and covers six bio-geographic life zones.

Birding is one of the most popular activities with over 150 species identified on the property. Many birds are mi-gratory and at Vermejo for short periods during the year. Both golden and bald eagles reside on the ranch as well as numerous species of raptor. A few other notable birds are the white-tailed ptarmigan and the western tanager. The largest bird on the ranch is the merriam’s turkey, which can easily be seen at any time during the year.

Hiking the many different high-mountain meadows and peaks is an activity available during the spring and sum-mer. The staff can customize a hike to meet any desired level of difficulty. Some of the hikes encompass visits to an old ghost town, cowboy cemeteries, and adobe ruins. Big Costilla peak is the most challenging hike with an ascent up to 12,800 feet where the wreckage of a WWII bomber can be viewed.

Photo safaris are another popular activity for guests with significant opportunities to photograph wildlife in its natural habitat. Black bears are commonly seen around the lakes, there are between 1,500 and 2,000 mule deer, approximately 1,500 bison, a free-range elk herd of 8,000, and of course many other animals native to this area. Vistas of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains are spectacular anytime of the year and the fall foliage is breathtaking.

Early in the century, leaders of industry and finance including Firestone, Hoover, and Mellon, frequented

the exclusive resort located high in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of New Mexico. Vermejo has also hosted Hol-lywood stars, film directors and studio executives starting from the early 1920’s and continuing to this day. They came to Vermejo - a place to relax, to regroup, and to plan.

Today, Vermejo Park Ranch continues to offer innova-tive businessmen and women a unique setting to address contemporary business challenges. Vermejo Park Ranch provides professional retreat services combined with first class wildlife viewing opportunities.

Vermejo’s comfortable meeting space, gracious dining room and acres of unsurpassed beauty set the stage for dynamic, productive interactions, quiet reflection, and relaxing recreation.

Make your plans to visit Vermejo well in advance. The opportunity to visit this exclusive unique property should not be missed. Well appointed accommodations, a recently remodeled main lodge, the addition of Costilla Lodge, conference facility, and distinctive cuisine and service will provide you and your staff a truly extraordi-nary conference and private experience.

Get Out of Our Houseby RiChaRd a. CoRREa sR. sGT  RiaRnG RETiREd

If you are a sitting member of the United States House of Represen-tatives then you need to GOOOH (Get Out of Our House). This is the message to United States representa-tives from GOOOH members from all over this great country. And the members of GOOOH, working with those who are concerned about the direction this nation is headed, are going to do all we can to cause these 435 professional politicians to be looking for new jobs come January 2011.

GOOOH is one of the many grass-roots organizations that have sprung up since 2008. It is non-partisan and owes no allegiance to any political party. Its members come from all walks of life, all political persua-sions, and they all have one thing in common - they are tired of seeing the professional political class that has a strangle-hold on the US Con-gress, looting the treasury to enrich themselves and their cronies while hardworking Americans foot the bill. They are tired of the corruption of our representatives and senators, and fed up with the special favors to those that keep them in power. And they will no longer allow these vora-cious scavengers to ignore the will of the people while they pander to the special interests that leach off the federal treasury.

So how does GOOOH plan to change all of this? By organizing groups of citizens in each congres-sional district to challenge the professional politicians and replac-ing them with citizen legislators. A daunting challenge to be sure, but as the recent gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, the recent senatorial election in Massachusetts, as well as the close election in New York’s 23rd congressional district show that it can be done.

By using the internet, social net-working groups like Facebook and messaging applications like Twitter, GOOOH has been able to organize a network of dedicated volunteers in every state, county and congressional district. These volunteers are reach-ing out to their fellow citizens (at work, at play, or at home) to garner support and recruit new members. And the response from our fellow citizens has been very positive.

I have been honored with the respon-sibility of being the state coordinator for GOOOH in the state of Colorado. I have been in contact with hundreds of Coloradans to create the state level leadership group and the many district groups. While the organiza-

tion of this is still in the initial stag-es, so many of the folks I’ve written to and spoken with have volunteered to help. In the work that I do, I find myself humbled by peoples’ respons-es and efforts to change how things are done in our country.

As GOOOH continues to move toward the goal of replacing the professional political class with citizen legislators we ask all Ameri-cans to consider what we propose. The United States of America is a great nation because of its people, not the politicians or the government policies they espouse. Our best days are still ahead of us and this nation will return to the prosperity we have experienced when we replace the en-trenched incumbents in Washington with citizens like yourselves, who will use common sense in carrying out the duties of US Representatives.

PUEBLO — Dana Perino hasn’t stopped moving since she left the White House. The former White House press secretary for the Bush administration spends her Tuesdays with Sean Hannity as a news analyst in the studios of Fox News.

She also devotes one day a month to a consulting firm providing stra-tegic communications advice to the private sector. The rest of her days are spent delivering speeches, running a mentoring program she organized for young career women, as well as con-tributing political commentary to The Washington Post, Politico.com and The National Review. That is, when she’s not jetting off to Scotland with her husband to visit their twin three-year-old grandchildren, or volunteer-ing her time in Africa to help educate families about AIDS.

The 37-year-old Denver native has ties to Pueblo. She went to college here at the University of South-ern Colorado (now Colorado State University-Pueblo) earning a degree in mass communications. She began her career as a journalist while still in college, serving as the host of Capitol Journal, a weekly radio show broad-casted through Rocky Mountain Pub-lic Broadcasting and as the producer of Standoff, a weekly public affairs broadcast. She went on to study public affairs reporting, earning a masters degree from the University of Illinois. But she quickly learned that journal-ism wasn’t for her. She said found her place in public relations and hasn’t looked back. Perino spent nearly seven years in the White House, first joining the staff as director of communications for the Council on Environmental

Quality. She was hired as deputy press secretary to President George W. Bush in 2005. She became press secretary in 2007 and served until the end of Bush’s presidency in 2009. The time she spent in the White House made a tremendous impact on her life, she said.

“I learned a lot about loyalty.” She said she hopes to someday write a book about her experience as press secretary, something broad-based that could be appreciated by a wide audience. “I think I can share how a person can take the high road and still come out on top.” She said she has no plans to run for office.

Perino said the next generation of voters will have to tackle the financial situation we’ve created by overspend-ing.

“Sooner or later we’ll run out of other peoples money to spend.” She also said that the threat of terrorism will continue to loom. “The odds are stacked against us,” she said of the threat of another terrorist attack.

More information on Dana Perino and the opportunity to have her speak at events can be found here:

LT. COL. Allen WestLet Freedom RingGood amERiCan PosT sTaff REPoRTs

Operation “Go West” – the campaign for retired Lieutenant Colonel, Allen West, is where you will find this message, “2010 will present a historic op-portunity to reclaim our Ameri-ca. We are at a crossroad where only you can help us become that ‘city on a hill’ that is the American ideal and the Ameri-can promise.”

We have heard this before – all candidates have such rhetoric. What makes Allen West so dif-ferent?Let’s start with the fact that he can eloquently explain topics that are important and urgent, and appears willing to fight for what is right – not necessar-ily what is popular. Interview after interview, West coherently answers questions about our domestic issues and international issues. He can quickly quote and refer to SunTzu, the Koran and Plato, to name a few historic resources. He is not afraid to call people out for committing actions that harm our republic and liberty. His replies to ques-tions are detailed, and researched – making our current politicians look exactly like that – politi-cians – not representatives of our Republic. West is a man who has actually studied the prob-lems, and is informed enough to make decisions by taking positive actions to make a dif-ference! This isn’t just rhetoric, it’s what makes this candidate so different.

He is a man who loves his country and believes that people should be judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin (King, 1963). West says to an audience, “I don’t see myself as African-American, Black-American – I see myself as an American”. He goes on to say “…I am very proud of the heritage of my parents, I am very proud of the heritage of my people, but if you stick a knife in me, it’s gonna come out red, white and blue…” (see the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxB75lVN1us).

He excelled in the military, serv-ing our country for 22 years. His honors include: a Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commenda-tion Medals (one with Valor), and a Valorous Unit Award. Badges that he proudly wears

include: Army Master parachut-ist badge, Air Assault badge, Navy/Marine Corps parachut-ist insignia, Italian parachutist wings, and the German profi-ciency badge (Bronze award). Lt. Col. West has put his life on the line for our country and freedoms. The people that he meets around the country who have a connection to our armed forces, can appreciate a man of West’s caliber and strength. The freedom and liberties that we are trying to save today should reflect the men and women who have already given their lives for this country, as well as those who are serving in our armed forces now. We owe it to them to be informed by standing up for liberty. Lt. Col. West appeals to a large base of voters who love this country for what it stands for and the constitutional princi-ples it was built upon. West is dedicated to liberty, the consti-tution, and free markets. His campaign embraces his love of country, as well as his love of life. West is an avid dis-tance runner and PADI Master certified SCUBA diver. He likes riding motorcycles and attending church, all American values and a lifestyle we should admire. Listening to Lt. Col. West speak and interact with thou-sands of community members, it’s clear that he is probably one of the most qualified candi-dates for any office, including President of the United States. However, upon digging deeper, and going beyond his amazing love for country, community, and prosperity, we have found that, in fact, he is indeed true to his word, with an intriguing background and dedication to freedom.

We could use about 534 more of them in our House of Repre-sentatives and Senate. Please take the time to look at his campaign here: http://allen-westforcongress.com
