Economic Promotion Offi ce

Publication details. Publisher: Economic Promotion Offi ce, Canton of Glarus | 2nd issue, March 2011, 500 copies | Production: panta rhei pr gmbh | Printing: Südostschweiz Print

Location: Glarus.

A central position.

Excellent access. The major north-south artery (A3) passes through the north of Glarus, rail connections are excellent, there is a small airstrip for private jets in Mollis and Zurich-Kloten airport is only an hour away, offering fast and easy con-nections to other countries. The European Single Market is right at the doorstep.

Fast links to Europe.

What’s more: Glarus has a feature that is unique in Switzerland, and one that also sets an example for the rest of the country: the Canton’s municipal structure reform. In 2011, the 25 municipali-ties of Glarus were merged to form three large “united municipalities:” Glarus North, Glarus and Glarus South. This makes Glarus South the municipality with the largest area in the whole of Switzerland, and the reform has enhanced admini-strative effi ciency.

Advantage: Glarus.

Hello, or Grüezi as we say here.

A warm welcome to the Glarnerland. Welcome to an economic area that is moving dynamically head, a place to live amid a wealth of tradition and a fertile environ-ment for the future of your company and its employees.

Pragmatic. As a business location, Glarus offers many advantages for companies and residents alike. Lean administration, personal contact and close relationships mean that decisions are taken quickly and without complications.

Innovative. Glarus has a tradition of innovation that dates back many centuries. As one of the fi rst Swiss cantons to introduce an economic promotion law, Glarus successfully took control of structural change. The Canton is now home to leading companies in several sectors: machinery and plant construction, plastics, electri-cal engineering, and also food and environmental engineering.

Attractive. The attractive tax system in Glarus, and real estate that is affordable and available throughout the Canton – these assets are attracting more and more attention. And the vibrant business center of Zurich is barely an hour away. All in all, an enticing prospect for companies as well as private individuals!

Close at hand. The Canton of Glarus is part of the Greater Zurich Economic Area, and it links the business metropolis of Zurich with the fl ourishing Alpine Rhine Valley (including the Vorarlberg, Liechtenstein, and the Grisons/St. Gallen Rhine Valley).

Open-minded. But we want to offer more than affordability and proximity. We hope that our Canton’s special personality and the unique variety of our business and living environment will encourage you to locate here. In the Glarnerland, you’ll fi nd a long-standing tradition of openness to new ideas.

We invite you to come to a canton where radical change and long-standing tradition exist side by side, a canton that is open to the world without losing its own unique character. We are happy to present the advantages we offer as a business location and to assist you when you move here. You can count on us for personal support – fast, and close at hand.

The Government of the Canton of Glarus

Straightforward administration. Our cantonal and municipal administrations are organized effi ciently. In 2011, the 25 former municipalities were merged to form three large “united municipalities.” The result: more transparent organizational structures and authorities that work more effectively. Policy decision-makers are easily accessible, and they support entrepreneurs’ concerns – so solutions are found quickly. It takes only a few days to issue work permits for foreign employees. Incorporating a company is fast – it’s easy to make the entry in the Commercial Register. Our manageable size has a benefi cial effect on access to key networks. Here in the Glarnerland, you’ll fi nd that contact with your partners and clients, knowledge transfer and access to the workforce are all as simple as could be.

Good advice. The Economic Promotion Offi ce will discreetly and effi ciently provide you with the basic information you need to make sound decisions on investment and locations. Industrial and service companies benefi t from fi rst-class advice on locations, assistance with obtaining construction land and premises, and support with labor market and fi nancing issues. Thanks to its partnership with the Linth Technology Center, the Economic Promotion Offi ce can provide you with access to a network of colleges, universities, research Offi ce centers, technology transfer institutions, and companies in various sectors. Moreover, our offi ce is the point of contact for government subsidies granted to individual companies.

What’s more: The fi rst Sunday in May is always the day when the people of Glarus gather on the Zaunplatz in town to decide on their laws – for example, the tax rate for the coming year.As well as giving the population an opportunity to cast their votes, the Cantonal Assembly is the only one in Switzerland that can amend draft laws proposed by the parliament (known as the Landrat).

Administration and politics.

Pragmatic. Transparent. Fast.

Voices from the Canton of Glarus: “As someone born and bred in Glarus, I transferred my entire business from Dübendorf to Bilten in 2007. I was able to make the move thanks to the support I received from the authorities. The modern new building refl ects our growing order book, provi-des the extra space we need for production and storage, and meets the logistical requirements excellently. The company benefi ts from an ideal infrastructure, and our employees enjoy a high quality of life.” Walter Zannier, Proprietor of HESS Medizintechnik AG, a medical technology company: www.hess-med.ch

Business and industry.

Powering ahead. Solution-driven. Tried and tested.

Traditionally modern. The Glarnerland has traditionally been an industrial canton. Virtually one in two of the Canton’s 18,000 or so jobs is in the secondary sector. This makes Glarus the most heavily industrialized canton in Switzerland. Traditio-nal industrial fi rms have evolved into modern high-tech enterprises. Successful reorientation of this sort points the way to the future. The Glarnerland is home to leading companies in several sectors: machinery and plant construction, plastics and electrical engineering, as well as food and environmental engineering. The service sector is more or less the same size as the secondary sector. Our proximity to the vibrant economic center of Zurich – with its vast catchment area for labor and knowledge – is driving development ahead in the Canton of Glarus.

Percentage of employees by sectors, 2008.

What’s more: Glarus has a long history of setting industrial trends. Back in 1740, Landmajor Fridolin Streiff set up the fi rst textile printing works to print cotton at Oberdorfbach in Glarus. Some 120 years later, this operation had developed into a fl ourishing industrial sector. More than 23 printing works employed a workforce of 6000. The products were exported all over the world, especially to the Balkans, Asia Minor, Indo-China and Africa. The “Glarner Tüechli” (a local type of foulard) is still popular with tourists as a souvenir that embodies the concept of “Swissness.”

Voices from the Canton of Glarus: “Here in Mitlödi, we have developed from a back-yard business into Switzerland’s largest and most modern margarine factory. The ‘recipe’ that has successfully turned us into one of the top addresses for the production of high-grade margarine is: Quality from the Glarnerland. Employees feel a bond with the company, and water – one of our raw ma-terials – is of excellent quality here. In a nutshell: The Glarnerland provides the perfect setting for our success.” Adolf Grüninger, Owner, Adolf Grüninger AG, www.grueninger.ch

Sardona UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sardona Tectonic Arena has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. In the Sardona Geopark, visitors can tour about 50 “geo-exhibits” and learn about unusual geological features, mines, quarries and research stations. This park extends over the eastern territory of the Canton of Glarus and parts of the Cantons of Grisons and St. Gallen.

5

The Netstal Circle. In 2009, the “Centro 6” development was built in northern Netstal, with several apartment blocks and a business building. This was followed by more new buildings. The “Netstal Circle” now hosts production halls for Sauter, Bachmann AG and Stöckli Metall as well as business premises for Service 7000 AG.

3

Bilten – a boom town.A variety of small and medium-sized enterprises have set up in Bilten during recent years: examp-les include Hess Medizintechnik, Resilux and the logistics center for the Läderach company of Ennenda. The town’s position directly on the autobahn and on the edge of the Greater Zurich Area is highly prized by companies.

Voices from the Canton of Glarus: “We view loyal employees and the feeling of “belonging to a family” as a valuable asset of our location. The strong sense of home has a major constructive infl uence on entrepreneurial development. You can actually see that business partners and authorities are delighted to be achieving something. Decision-makers are genuinely interested in seeing companies develop, and that creates a positive investment climate and competitive con-ditions in general.” Jürg Läderach, Owner, Confi seur Läderach AG, a confectionery company: www.laederach.ch

Versatile. Fresh. Motivated.

Linthal 2015.The Axpo power group is investing more than two billion francs in a new pumped storage power plant in Linthal. It will deliver more power than the Leibstadt nuclear power station. A small village has been built for construction workers from all over the world, and a goods handling hall and cableways are being built to transport the materials. The plant is due to go into service in 2015.

10

Rehabilitation and renaturing of the Linth.Work on the Linth Canal has been in progress since 2009, and this 100 million franc project is due to be completed in 2013. The rehabilitation work will protect the Linth plain against fl oods in the future.

DeepGreen Data Center. One of the world’s most advanced and environmentally friendly data centers is being built in Mollis. With the help of water from the Walensee lake, this server space provider is saving precious cooling energy, which normally accounts for 35 to 50 percent of total energy costs in a data center.

New ski lifts. The Aeugsten ski lift was opened at Ennenda in 2010. Three years earlier, Braunwald Sports Railways opened the new Gumen lift, triggering an upturn for tourism in the Braunwald area. Since 2002, the new six-seater chair lift at Elm has carried skiers up the Schabell mountain. The new Tschinglen lift also opened at Elm in August 2009. These two projects in Elm alone account for investments of almost 10 million francs.

Small power stations pay off.Nine projects have been planned and partially completed on the two main waterways, the Linth and the Sernf. Estimated total invest-ments for all these projects amount to more than 100 million francs.

Voices from the Canton of Glarus: “As a global manufacturer of innovative lighting and mast systems, our company’s location is a key factor for us: the mountain landscape here is an attractive way of conveying the ‘Made in Switzerland’ image, and we benefi t from effi cient local subcon-tractors and proximity to Zurich. Lines of communication are short – and that includes contact with the authorities. Customers, employees and suppliers appreciate easy access, a rural envi-ronment and a high quality of life.” René Vuillemin, General Manager, Nivatec Europoles GmbH, www.nivatec.ch

Inspiring environment. It’s no coincidence that the Glarnerland produces many pioneering breakthroughs and innovations: The Economic Promotion Offi ce colla-borates closely with the Linth Technology Center (TZL), a forum for technology, start-ups and advisory services. As one of its main services, the Center provides a network that offers key benefi ts to companies.

High-quality transfer. The TZL’s involvement with research and development makes it easy for Glarus companies to access the Swiss technology market and promotion programs for innovative projects. If a company needs support with the assess-ment of a project or wants to cooperate with other fi rms, the TZL will provide contacts with specialists and can offer effi cient facilities for anonymized searches and contact opportunities.

Professional follow-through. The TZL supports new start-ups and young entrepre-neurs. It provides advice and clarifi es questions for feasibility and risk assessments, and can assist with drawing up a business plan. The Center’s services mainly com-prise advice and coaching, with a focus on technology, products, marketing, fi nance and organization.

Innovative economic driver. The TZL is the source of advice on innovation for the Canton of Glarus, and it supports projects through its “InnoChallenge” promotion program. As a complement to the Center’s basic services, this program ensures that essential specialist services such as project management or market studies are deployed and fi nanced.

Professional support for start-ups.

A center for technology and start-ups.

Innovative. Professional. Networked.

What’s more: The Jenny zone in Ziegelbrücke is home to the TZL. This zone offers a variety of options for offi ce and business premises, including the live-and-work concept. The TZL also provides extended services at its own location, e.g. use of a training room. www.tzl.ch

Voices from the Canton of Glarus: “We feel good in the Canton of Glarus. And we have felt good here since 1922. Not only because of the outstanding workforce, but also because people know and respect one another here. We have always been met with great understanding for our projects and concerns, at both the municipal and cantonal level. The government is receptive to business concerns. In Glarus, we join forces to tackle the major challenges of the future.” Martin Sauter, BoD Chairman, Sauter, Bachmann AG, www.sauterbachmann.ch

Taxes.

Attractive. Progressive. Competitive.

Modern and competitive. The corporate tax burden has been cut substantially in recent years, due especially to the reduction in profi t tax in 2009 (followed by further reductions in 2010). The effective rate of tax on profi ts is about 16.5 percent. In the BAK Taxation Index for 2010, Glarus came 6th in the ranking for corporate tax out of 17 cantons represented. Glarus is also attractive for highly qualifi ed professionals (5th position). Glarus leads Switzerland in mitigating double busi-ness taxation for owners of companies with share capital thanks to an attractive method of partial taxation on dividends.

BAK Taxation Index 2010: Switzerland – Companies

Tax relief. By agreement with the municipality, the cantonal government can grant various forms of tax relief for newly established companies comprising legal enti-ties that benefi t the Canton’s economic interests, during the year of incorporation and the next nine years. A major change in operational activities can be treated in the same way as a new start-up. The Tax Administration and the Economic Promo-tion Offi ce review applications jointly on the basis of detailed business and fi nan-cial plans, project descriptions and investment estimates.

What’s more: Glarus is one of the selected areas of Switzerland that can also grant tax relief at the federal level. Almost the entire territory of the Canton is included in the application zone for relief on direct federal tax.

Real estate.

Available. Affordable. Well-developed.

Extremely reasonable in price. Prices for real estate and rents in Glarus are low when compared with large centers in the vicinity. Real estate for production, offi ce space, commercial premises and residential accommodation are on offer through-out the Canton. Prices are 20 to 80 percent lower than in Greater Zurich.

Straightforward approval procedure. If an industrial fi rm wants to erect a new buil-ding, a construction permit is issued within two to four weeks. More time is required for environmental compatibility checks and urban planning procedures, and to pro-cess objections. The authorities actively provide advice and support for investors.

Affordable residential property. In our region, you and your employees will fi nd attractive residential properties in favorable locations at prices that families can easily afford.

Comparison of locations: real estate prices.

What’s more: All along the Glarus Industrial Route, you will see huge factory sites that bear witness to early industrialization in the Canton. The route runs from Linthal to Ziegelbrücke and from Elm to Schwanden. There are 80 selected properties along the way. The Canton of Glarus has a directory of industrial sectors to assist applicants for new use or change of use. Moreover, the area earmarked for new industrial and commercial occupancy has not yet been used up. Currently available plots of construction land are listed in the Industrial Construction Land Directory of the Canton of Glarus. These directories are available on request, or online at: www.glarus.ch

Voices from the Canton of Glarus: “We opened our new factory at Ennenda in 2010. After a con-version phase of only eleven months and investments of 24 million francs, we now employ a workforce of 35, which will increase to 45 with full capacity. Thanks to this second site not far from Rapperswil, we can eliminate several risks such as production outages in case of a fi re. I feel a really close bond with our Ennenda location because our family and our workforce have had ties with this area for many years.” Franziska A. Tschudi, CEO of the WICOR Group, www.wicor.com

Living environment.

Varied. Natural. Alive.

Unique living environment. The Glarnerland offers a multitude of leisure options. The benefi ts of recreation here are appreciated by families, sports enthusiasts, residents and visitors alike. Children have good opportunities for starting out in life in the Glarnerland. Care outside of school hours is also available in certain places. Kindergarten is free of charge from age 4 onwards.

Modern infrastructure. The cantonal and specialist high schools in Glarus prepare students to enter Switzerland’s tertiary educational establishments. The Sports College develops young talents. Healthcare professionals are trained at the Glarus Nursing College, and the numerous SMEs cooperate with the vocational colleges to offer apprenticeship places in all other sectors. Specialist shops and branches of major retailing chains – as well several shopping malls – offer everything for day-to-day needs as well as more specialized products and services. The Glarus Cantonal Hospital is well known as a center for professional, individual care in acute cases.

Vibrant culture. Glarus people love music, folk traditions and handicrafts. Contem-porary art can be found in the Glarus Kunsthaus, a gallery that constantly attracts international attention. History and culture are catered for at the Canton’s museum, library and archive. Cultural life is enriched by theatrical, music and choral societies as well as music schools.

Disposable income in the Swiss cantons.

What’s more: Mountains and nature

are a feature of everyday life for

Glarus people. At 3614 meters, the

Tödi is the highest mountain in

Eastern Switzerland. In the Sardona

Geopark, visitors can tour some

50 “geo-exhibits” and learn about

“Freiberg Kärpf” is Europe’s oldest

protected area for wild animals and

birds, who have lived here safely

since 1548. Deer, chamois, marmots,

roe-deer, eagles and black grouse

can be observed in the 106 square

kilometers covered by the protected
