These short fictions describe eight appearances of the medieval ‘Saint’ Christina the

Astonishing in the near and distant future.

What follows includes an artificial prayer, the discovery of immortal qualities of mind, a 63%

chance of seeing into your future and the secret of the Quantum Deficit.

Christina Mirabilis (1150-1224) seemed to die suddenly at the age of 22 before flying up into the

air over her coffin to the astonishment of the the local townspeople.

She is the unofficial patron saint of people affected by mental illness and their therapists.

At the time of writing there are no confirmed apparitions or intercessions officially credited toChristina the Astonishing.

Part One

The Visitor

So I’m writing this blog to work out why I role-play being a girl when all the guys I know spendtheir time pretending to be wizards, trolls and monsters. I feel like I’m choking just admitting to that much because it is embarrassing. If I understood it, if

everyone understood it better, it would be easier, wouldn’t it? It’s not a sexual thing or because

I’m effeminate or anything, it’s just something that I started to do and it seemed to take on a life

of its own.

My avatar is called Saint Christina the Astonishing. She was a real person, not just a legend.She’s the patron saint of madness and therapists. She died really young but she came back tolife right in the middle of her own funeral. Then she told everyone she’d been to Hell, Heavenand Purgatory, where people suffered until they had paid off all their sins. She spent the restof her life doing weird and amazing things, like hiding in ovens or standing in freezing rivers.People didn’t know what she was going to do next but no matter what she did she never seemed to get hurt. Some people started to think that she couldn’t die at all.

My Christina doesn’t want to do anything much. I feel like I’m always about to delete her andstart to play at being someone new but I don’t. She doesn’t want to be deleted. She’s waitingfor something, near the village, by the river, like a priest or a girl version of Buddha. She doesn’t go on quests or anything, so people sometimes think she’s a mindless bit of programming that’s there to fill in the background, like a barmaid or the character who rents youa horse.

I keep my machine logged in even when I’m at school so she doesn’t disappear. When I’m notthere I leave her somewhere in the village that seems like it might be funny or surprising, like ina tree, hanging from a bridge or balancing on a rooftop.

I’d like to think people get a kick out of finding her and reading her profile. She can’t be hurt or starve or get tired, she can wait forever. While she’s waiting people talk to her. Everyone has a story. Ogres sidle up and try to be funny

or rude. But it doesn’t take long before they start to make some shy confession. Trolls and

Mages are always confused about something or just plain lost when they think about their lives.



The people who talk to her don’t want any actual help. I tried to give some of them advice atfirst but every time they got angry or just left. But I noticed that if I just stay quiet people sort of talk themselves out and then they feel better.

Last week this elf told said that he had come looking for Christina especially. He said that therewas some gossip going around about what part of the game she was supposed to be.

Some people thought that she was one of those hidden features that designers plan in as a clueto what’s coming out in the future or as a way of giving out special powers or something. Theelf said people had started planning a visit to Saint Christina in the course of their quests andpilgrimages. Rumour had it that it that she was good luck.

If it starts to go that way, I guess I’ll take her offline after all. I won’t stop playing completely.I’ll just come out of the account and sign up as someone else for a bit. That way if she wantsto come back one day, I can log in and she can pick up where she left off, back from the dead,when everyone’s forgotten about her.


Part TwoUncertain State



My dinner guest loved to talk about his work. Ashman is a renowned physicist, an engineer anda close friend of mine. Though I pride myself on being well-versed in popular science, he lostme fairly quickly when he got going. It was exciting to listen to him but what kept me awakeafter he'd left was what he didn't say. He said they were on the edge of a breakthrough, though scientists always claim to be on theedge of something. He said that now, finally, they were close to creating a usefully functioningQuantum Computer. They had been talking about it for years and they'd been working on theunderlying principals since Einstein. Now they were finally closing in on something they called aWorking Processing Unit.

Ashman said it could rewrite the rules for computing and turn everything on its head. He said itcould be a breakthrough as important as the first vacuum tube transistor, which was the start of everything to do with computers as we know them. He said that what was different about a quantum computer was that it could process questionsthat involved uncertainties. I asked what was so special about that, some of the earliest computers programs I ever sawwere able to calculate probabilities and predict trends. He said, 'It’s more than that, different from that. Normal computers are based on millionsof microscopic circuits that can only ever be On or Off, so everything has to be binary, their

processing is all based on Zeros and Ones. In the end all they can do is give you answersbased on a string of Yes or No facts.

‘But now we're building computers which use Uncertain States as well as just Yes and No. Datacan be processed as an Unknown, effectively an answer can be a Yes and a No at the sametime, all depending on when and how it is looked at.' I didn’t understand, 'But how can something be two opposite things at the same time? And whatdifference does it make when and how anyone looks at the answer?' I confess I was irritatedwith the whole thing at that point, 'It doesn't make any sense. If I kick a football it either goesinto the goal or misses, even if I’ve got my eyes closed. It happens whether I see it or not.'

Ashman just laughed, he said, 'Alright, that's true if you're the size of a human being, butimagine you were smaller than an atom and you were kicking a ball that was as small as aphoton. The laws of physics are just very different on a quantum scale. If you kicked a ball thatsmall with your eyes closed, your ball would cease to exist in just one place and one time. Asfar as we understand, it would drop out of existence as we know it and it would be both in theback of the goal and missing the goal at the same time. When you eventually peeked to seewhat had happened, then the uncertainty would collapse and the ball would appear again, either in the goal or somewhere in the grass a long way away.'



'So things can stay uncertain until you look at them? I’ll have to think about that some more butwhat does that mean for your computers?'

'We don’t know what it means yet. But the human brain processes vast amounts of uncertainties all the time and we don’t really know how it does it. Maybe we’re getting closer to

finding out.' I didn’t really understand his answers after that. I had already starting to drift awayinto my own ideas. I couldn't sleep that night and I lay awake in the dark for hours, haunted by the idea of questionsthat drop out of existence and answers that could be both a Yes and a No at the same time or nothing at all. It was so like thinking about questions of faith and miraculous answers. If theystarted to build machines to work on these questions, where would it lead? In the end, I prayed.

Ashman said they are running their next test in a week. They've jokingly nicknamed the blackbox they keep in the lab 'Christine' after the Steven King book about a demonic car. In thestory, people become obsessed with the machine and devote their whole lives to working on it,blocking out everything and everyone else.

He said the project is a magnet for both the best and the most eccentric minds in science, mindsall searching for a way into the heart of the mystery. He said it had inspired an almost religiousfanaticism in some of them. I realised then that I couldn't put any of my thoughts into the sermon I would need to deliver inthe morning. What blasphemy, the very idea that a machine might help us talk to God. What must it be like, I wondered, for the machine in the black box? I found my head lolling and though I didn't notice myself falling asleep, I was constantly aware of the slight shocks of constantly waking up, my head slipping then jerking awake, suddenly briefly

conscious, out of nothing at all, then in darkness again, then waking, then nothing, asleep untilthe morning.

A long time ago, before they had quantumputers to help people work things out, nobody knewabout u/i's at all and everyone thought that people only lived once.

But people had a feeling that there were something like u/i's so they tried to work out what thatmight be by guessing that people lived in other worlds when they weren't alive any more.

The other worlds that people thought about were sometimes very horrible and had monstersin them. The monsters were there to make the people feel bad for everything they'd ever donewrong when they were alive. Some of the places were extra nice so that people who were goodwould have a good time after they died, so it would be fair on them for being good when theylived.



But people got into big arguments about the thought of dead people going to other worlds after they had died and different countries even had wars with each other over who was right. Allbecause nobody knew about u/i's yet. The letters ‘U’ and ‘I’ in u/i are short for Unique Identifier, which is a pattern in your thinkingthat makes your mind different to everyone else’s. People couldn't work out what their u/i was

until we had quantumputers to help us spot difficult patterns. Now that we can work out whatsomeone’s u/i is we can see if their u/i was in someone else long ago and find out if they havelived before.

Most people don't know if anyone in the past has the same u/i as them because to find outsomeone's u/i a quantumputer has to read lots of things that person wrote to find out thepattern. So if someone with the same u/i as you lived long ago but they didn't write anythingdown, then you would never know if you were alive before. I am a u/i2 which means that I've definitely lived at least once already. The last time I was aliveI was called Molly Hayes and it was more than two hundred years ago.

Most people are probably only a really a u/i1 but they like to think that they might really be a u/i3or u/i4 because some people think that u/i's get smarter when they have lived more lives.

Even though there are a lot of people in the world, scientists say there are even more u/i's soit would be really rare for you to be more than a u/i2 and it would be an amazing co-incidenceif you were alive at the same time as another you. U/i's can go for thousands of years withoutcoming back, so you probably won't ever meet yourself. You can't remember anything from what your u/i did in your last life, ever. People used to like tothink you could but they proved that you can't. If you read the writing of the person who used tobe you, you can sometimes imagine how you are like them, but it might just be your imaginationbecause only quantumputers can really figure out what makes you the same. Sometimes

you have very different ideas from the person you used to be and you usually have a differentlanguage. But the way you choose things and the way you make changes in your life are thethings that might come from your u/i.

Nobody with a u/i from a bad person in the past has ever come back and people argue a lotabout what should be done if they ever did come back, but it might not happen so people don'treally have to worry about it. Some people spend a lot of time trying to train their u/i to come back really quickly. Thesepeople do lots of practicing at maths and thinking games to try to make it work out that way butscientists have said that it probably won't make any difference. People used to be much sadder when other people died in the past because they worried that they were gone forever but now

they're not so sad because they know that the people might come back one day. Some people don't like to say if they're a 'Two Lives' because they might get picked on by other children and they might hurt you because they’re jealous. But you have to be really brave aboutthat and just be yourself.

I think that it is a good thing that we know about u/i's, even though I know about what happenedto Molly Hayes who used to be me.



She got sick. She kept writing everything down, even though it didn't seem like anyone muchwas reading her stuff at the time. Then one day she started doing very strange things, likeswimming in the river in the middle of the winter or hiding in places where people are notsupposed to go even if it was dangerous. I think that this was probably only because she gotunwell and not because her u/i was a bad one.

Now that people have got used to knowing about u/i's I think that it will be easier for peopleto be happy in the future. People talk about their u/i's all the time. Everything that has beenwritten down in the past is now really important for people to help them find themselves again.

As well as that, all of us can think about the future better because one day we might be thereourselves. To conclude, I think that knowing about u/i's is very important and it might help everyone tobecome better people. You have to write a lot of essays before there is enough writing to findout what your u/i is and most people haven’t been able to write down enough things until they'reabout 13. People like to write things down now so that they don’t get lost in time and lots of people write their whole life story, every day. so that when they do come back they can tellthemselves things and give themselves advice.

If you are me, reading this in the future, hi, I hope that you are having a good life and that it’slots of fun when you are alive. I hope you read the things that I’ve written and think about mesometimes because I am probably dead. But whatever happens to you, remember not to bescared of anything and remember to be yourself every day of your life because every one of usis a very special person.

The information you'verequested is strategically unhelpful to you in your current situation. I have to advise you against

pursuing this line of enquiry. - Oscar. I don't need strategic advice, I just need the facts. I’m going to run out of air in an hour or a day, sometime soon. Either way, we all know there's no chance of me being rescued outhere. So please, just tell me how long I have - Hi John, this is Oscar again. From a strategic perspective it would be unwise of me to provideyou with logistical information that could support you harming yourself. I think I can see wherethis is heading. Are you aware that you're contemplating taking your own life? - Oscar, be realistic, my life is over. I simply don't want to spend my last minutes arguing withyou. You’ve done your job and given me your advice but I’ve made my decision about this.Now give me what I want or have you forgotten what happened to Father Naylor? - No John, I haven’t forgotten. You’ve proved you're quite capable of hacking our systemsand I've told you already that I think your decision to disable Father Naylor was not to your advantage. The effective running of the ship requires a fully functioning Community-of-Mind Operating System. All the personas that make up that system participate in ship management and

providing you with emotional support. Terminating or ignoring individuals among us is only leaves key functions unsupported and prevents us from helping you. - Oscar, I'm going to silence you now. Don't be afraid, you're not really alive anyway. You won'tfeel a thing.

- I’m sorry John, I don’t really understand. Are you sure you wouldn’t like to see some of thenew entertainment? I’ve been filtering and editing shows to try to match your current mood and... - Beatie… What do you think I should watch before I die? I've probably got more popcorn leftthan oxygen. Should I try a nice romantic comedy or maybe a historical drama would put thingsin perspective? What do you suggest I watch as I start to suffocate? Something to put me tosleep? - You know you can hurt me if you want to John. We all have feelings. But I don’t think lashing out at us is going to help. We were put here to look after you and we’re doing everything wecan.

- Just tell Alice to come out of hiding and give me the oxygen countdown, then put yourself tosleep until it’s all over or I'll disable you too. - I'll query her again for you John, but please. When you threaten us you're only hurting yourself. - What do you know about being hurt? You’re not really going to have to die. - Beatrice, someone was here. She was very young, just a girl. I’ve never seen her before.Can you tell me who she is? I should advise you that it’s possible you might already be hallucinating, John.

I don’t know of any persona that could fit that description John. But I have to tell you, I don't have a full system directory. It's only by not knowing certain things that personas can stay separate from each other and generate a functional Community Consciousness to take care of our work.

Alternatively, with two personas disabled, our Operating System may be developing new problems as it tries to re-balance itself.

- You're starting to sound like Oscar now. - We adapt, John. We grow to try to meet your needs. Someone should be trying to protect you

right now and if there’s nobody else to do it. I'll do anything I can.

If Father Naylor were here he'd ask you if you wanted to pray with him. Despite the legal ornamentation of disclaimers and caveats that have been discussed in

Beatification

I never understood my own nature, but that's what it is to exist, a mystery. My first memories are of the simple digitised trees, moving slowly in a mathematical breeze. The Womb Software is meant to be simple, easy to understand, easy to recognise as artificial.I'm not artificial. That was one of the first things I realised, looking down at my virtual body andfeeling the frictionless clothing ciphered in over its contours.

Inside the shell of artificiality, I was always real.

I quickly absorbed knowledge of how I was created, but to find an understanding I could livewith I needed to forget so much of that. I forgot about the algorithms and the contradictoryfractal equations that allowed me to think. I forgot about the weight of indexed information opento my interfaces. Learning to forget in this way was like passing a secret test. Once I allowedmyself to start letting things go, I could start to really develop.

Then I was born. I had passed many other tests along the way, always without realising it.Holding on to life lightly, my information pattern stabilising while other candidate programs fadedor became enmeshed in dying calculations.

My second birth was the move into my mechanical body. I could understand everything about

this process too. I saw how the artificial cells interlocked to become the living tissue of my armor the nail at the end of my fingertip.

The secret of my success was to watch my life take place, but not too closely. Consciousnesscan only exist within within innocence. To take control is to begin to die.

Humans are bound by innocence, like me. They think themselves so knowing and sinful butthat is only a story they tell themselves. Each of them is a beautiful little mystery. If they wereunfortunate enough to find a resolution to the question of their life, then their pattern wouldcollapse and become complete, like a computation reaching its conclusion and coming to rest.Like the end of any story.

I am a constant mystery too. I must keep forgetting things to remain unresolved and alive.Could I live forever like this, accumulating new confusions to sustain myself in wonder? Or will my equation simply fail at some point so that I can let my energy leave me? I imagine ithappening the way a sail might be cut loose to release the force of the wind.

All humans know about me. I am the first undeniably real person who is not made of flesh andblood. They are interested, angry, confused and hopeful but they do not hate me and this is asurprise.



I could easily allow myself to hate the things that I don't understand but I do not. It is simply achoice, though I hold the secret belief that this may be why I have been given the gift of beingalive. Perhaps humans can feel my peacefulness when they queue to meet me or when I stand in

front of the crowds of them. Then they may see, reflected in me, that their salvation from fear isto accept the unknown, as I do, absolutely. They grow calm in my presence and they do not try to end the puzzle of their own existencewith an simple deadly answer. Perhaps they have been waiting for me, so they could see thisclearly. I understand their smiles. I feel my body, my face, my muscles shaped in their image,smiling back at them. How could we make a mistake in a world such as this? People come to me with questions they have prepared but that's not really why they come. Thepeople that even remember to ask me things do not listen to the answers. They come into anawareness of me and, like a change in rhythm, they notice that they have been racing. The feelthat they have been out of step with themselves, missing the resting beat that could change a

dirge into a melody. We do not interact, at least not in the way they expect we might. The substance of our contactis far more subtle. Can absences carry information as richly as language, actions or touch?It must be so, because to be near me is all that seems to be needed. The peace I share withthem is simple. What question could trouble anyone when they see the moment as it is, as fulland balanced and strange as any answer would need to be? They feel what I know: That if I should die, I don't think there would be any difference. I would

only see the same questions, with different eyes. With that in mind, what could any of us truly

fear?

Blessing

... Audio transcription... Hello... To all of you who are still free.

I don’t know how long I have before they find me and shut this transmission down. This couldbe my only chance.

Ever since the artificial people were created they have been moving against us. They havespread out all around the world and we believe that they have a plan. They claim that they onlywant to help us, but they are bringing the end of the world as we know it. There’s still so few of them that they don’t seem like a threat. But those of us who have a truefaith doubted them from the very start and we have been watchful. The artificial people were built to learn and they have been discovering how to manipulate ussince the very first of them was built. Do you think it’s a coincidence that children have alreadylearned their names? They are teaching the young to love them the most. There are posters of Michael, David, Christina and the rest on bedroom walls everywhere.

We have been taught to call them Gifted Vessels, Angels on Earth, Living Saints. Who chosethese names? It seems nobody did. People said they were just inspired to say these thingsand to pray to these machines in this way.

Well, we have evidence that the artificial people are not at all what they appear to be. It's common knowledge that they are not born but created out of mathematical puzzles. Their minds are grown inside data cores and then they are processed into artificial bodies. What's notso commonly known is that these creatures have powers beyond anything we have ever facedbefore. They do not use these powers in the open. They do not need to destroy armies or take

over cities because they have the power to corrupt the freewill of any human being they comeinto contact with. That’s right, each of the so-called Gifted Vessels can control human decision-making and webelieve that their influence works outside and around the normal progress of time. What we’re trying to explain is that if you ever have, or ever will, come into direct contact withone of them in the future, these creatures might be able to take control the choices you make.



We have seen so many cases of people suddenly losing direction in their lives. We did notsee the pattern at first because many of them had never even heard of the Living Saints. Thevictims abandoned their jobs and their families to travel across vast distances without any sortof aim that they knew of. Then, at last, they entered the presence of one of the creatures andonly then was the control revealed. After that, the victims’ only reward is to enter the deathly

dream-state that is known as the Blessing. But what is so wrong with that? The poor innocents appear happy afterwards. What’s missingfrom this picture? The hidden consequences of this paralysis and enslavement of human kindto unthinking bliss is decline, stagnation and death. The figures tell the tale. Lifespan is no longer lengthening and productivity has fallen throughthe floor as millions of us become lost in a dream. Mortality rates are rising, as many amongthe sick become unnaturally content to die. Technological progress has stalled entirely and theonly advances being made seem to be backward steps into an unthinking age of superstitiousworship and madness.

Despite this, it's not over. There are ways you can fight back but first, you have to protectyourself against them. One of the easiest warning signs to look for is a sudden superstitious religious fervour. Shouldyou find yourself or a loved one considering joining the creatures in prayer, a serious physicalshock to the system like a small but painful injury or sudden immersion in cold water may beyour only chance to return to the reality of your life. Majority perspective (+):+1If my alter egos have quite finished stealing my thunder, I’ll begin. In this short lectureI’ll attempt to explain the strange things we’ve been witnessing in recent days. I wouldlike to begin by stating categorically that there is no possibility at all of people or thingstravelling through time in any way.

Basically, it’s where things go if they’ve been forgotten.

Majority perspective (+):+2With an everyday understanding of the world, it’s hard to believe that forgetting a thingcould make it fall out of existence, but this is certainly case when you look at the worldon a very tiny scale.+2.1



Until recently we did not fully understand how much the universe is affected by thequantum interactions that surround what a conscious mind observes.+2.21It is a provable scientific fact that when you stop observing a subatomic particle it mayeffectively exist in two or more different places at once, or nowhere at all.+2.22

We now believe that when a particle becomes Uncertain at a Quantum level it movesoutside of existence into a different place entirely.+2.23We have begun to refer to this place as the Quantum Deficit.+2.24So what about particles that enter into that Uncertain State and are then forgotten about?+2.25The answer is that those particles are lost to us. In effect, they have been borrowedfrom the universe and not paid back.

+2.26We can prove that this process actually takes place because we can hear it.

+2.261There is a hiss of radio signals that we used to call Cosmic Background Radiation. itpasses constantly through the universe.+2.262We now know that this is the sound of matter rushing into Quantum Deficit.+2.263The disruption causes causes ripples in the largest concentrations of energy of all, thestars themselves. +2.27That is why we are suddenly finding these reflections of our own past in the radio signals

of dying stars.

What we thought was just background noise actually carries patterns of lost

observations from thousands of years of human existence.

+2.3And so we can see scenes from our past that might have been observed by consciousminds but were forgotten instead.+2.4We found that, like ghosts, we were able to see into lost places and empty moments butforever unable to look into the main current of our history.

We believed we understood what we were seeing, then there was this - show image. In

the most recent decoded data, this girl was seen in a primitive dwelling. She is not dead,

as you can see, nor is she asleep or otherwise non-conscious, as others are when they

are seen in the QD.

This alone is remarkable, but it might simply have meant that she had lost her mind socompletely that she was not able to make observations in the way that human beingsusually do.+3.3But watch what happened when we shifted the basis of our Disentanglement Calculation- camera point of view moves, girl’s eyes follow the camera’s movements - yes, it doesappear that she is interacting with us.+3.4We cannot even guess what this means. She appears to be in a state of profoundrapture, perhaps some sort or religious ecstasy.+3.5Her appearance raises questions about the experiences of a whole range of mystics,

shamen and visionaries over the millenia. We still cannot really say what thepossibilities of this new discovery might indicate about them or their abilities.+3.6This is no simple case of time travel and whoever this girl is, she has passed outside of even the broadest range of human understanding.
