The Fund’s Mission

To find effective treatments

and a cure for Fanconi anemia and

to provide education and support services to

affected families worldwide.

Page 3: The Fund’s Mission

Fanconi anemia (FA):Occurs equally in males and females.

Page 4: The Fund’s Mission

Fanconi anemia: Is found in all ethnic groups.

Page 5: The Fund’s Mission

Fanconi anemia:May affect all systems of the body.

Page 6: The Fund’s Mission

Fanconi anemia:Is a cancer-prone disease.

Page 7: The Fund’s Mission

Currently, the median life span for FA patients

is about 33 years.

History of the Fund

The Fanconi Anemia Research Fund was founded in 1989 by Dave and Lynn Frohnmayer, who lost two daughters to the disease. Their third daughter, Amy, also has Fanconi anemia.

Before 1989:

Most patients died in childhood.

Page 10: The Fund’s Mission

Few scientists were studying Fanconi anemia.

Before 1989:

Page 11: The Fund’s Mission

None of the genes responsible for the disease had been discovered.

Before 1989:

Page 12: The Fund’s Mission

Families didn’t have anyone to turn to when faced with this devastating diagnosis.

Before 1989:

Page 13: The Fund’s Mission

We’ve come a long way since 1989!

Page 14: The Fund’s Mission

Today:16 genes responsible for FA have been identified, five of them are related to breast cancer susceptibility.

Page 15: The Fund’s Mission

Scientists from around the world attend the Fund’s annual scientific symposia to discuss the latest in FA research findings.

Today:

Page 16: The Fund’s Mission

FA patients are living longer—due, in large part, to advances in bone marrow transplant protocols spearheaded byFund-supported research.

Today:

Page 17: The Fund’s Mission

The Fund provides education and support to families worldwide.

Much Work RemainsThe Fund is working to help develop:• A better

understanding of bone marrow failure.

Page 19: The Fund’s Mission

• Improved outcomes for people requiring a bone marrow transplant.

Page 20: The Fund’s Mission

• Effective treatments for the cancers developed by FA patients.

FA patients are hundreds to thousands of times more likely to develop certain cancers—and at a much younger age.

How Can You Help?

Page 22: The Fund’s Mission

More than 90% of the Fund’s annual budget comes from private

donations.

Why is FA Research Important to Everyone?

Page 24: The Fund’s Mission

FA research is helping doctors understand cancer development in the general population.

Your donation may lead to important discoveries for cancer patients everywhere.
