What we know about Abraham Lincoln is that he was in many ways a very simple man, who likely would be embarrassed by the erection of such an edifice built in his memory. He was known during his life as “Honest Abe.” In fact, many historians doubt any president served in that office with more moral integrity than he. We stand amazed at such characteristics as honesty because such seems a rarity in our world today. It is said that Diogenes of ancient Greece searched the city of Athens just to find an honest man. Likewise, and more importantly, the God of heaven seeks out honest men. “Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon” (Jere. 5:1). From the godly Abraham to the wicked Ananias and Sapphira, the Bible is replete with examples of men and women who lied. Our Lord seemed to be amazed when He met a completely honest man. “Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” (John 1:47). Honesty is truth telling and genuineness. It stands in stark contrast to lying, falsehood, and deceit. Honesty beautifies within and creates the wonderful virtue called godliness (1 Tim. 2:2). The more a person is like God in character, the more godly an individual becomes. God is always honest with you and me. He operates according to the standard of truth. He cannot lie (Tit. 1:3). The Devil is just the opposite. He is totally dishonest (John 8:44). Conversion begins with honesty. Jesus, relaying the parable of the soils, stated, “But on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience” (Luke 8:15). The principle of honesty must be taught early in life. Dorothy Law Nolte wrote, “If a child lives with honesty and fairness he learns what truth and justice are.” Why do people lie? Children sometimes lie because to them telling a lie seems to be the easy way out when they learn they have in some way misbehaved. Many responsible adults who should know better are guilty of the same thing. Some lie because the truth is so painful. It is amazing how many would rather believe a lie than believe truth. Paul asked, “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” (Gal. 4:16). Some lie because it appears their lies make them look better. Are any of us ever guilty of exaggeration? Exaggeration is a form of lying. Truth exists but falsehood has to be invented. Honesty beautifies within because honesty ensures we make right decisions. When we are honest we will assess ourselves properly. Sometimes a person refuses to go to the doctor because he fears what the diagnosis may be. Most likely this will result in serious consequences. Let us not dare be dishonest regarding the condition of our souls. Christian remember, “He that speaketh truth sheweth righteousness… and he that speaketh lies shall perish” (Pro. 12:17; 19:5). I=M Solution next week. C=G

Last week’s solution: Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. Ann Castleman 1918-2018

Forest Hill’s oldest member, Ann Castleman, passed away last week at the age of 99. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carter Castleman, also a faithful member of this church. Sister Castleman will be remembered as a sweet and gentle Christian lady. We rejoice that she died in triumphant faith. Her funeral service was conducted Sunday afternoon at Memorial Park Funeral Home and she was laid to rest beside her husband in the adjacent cemetery.
