The Catalina Cruise

seems like it hap-

pened eons ago, but it has

only been a few weeks.

As many of you know

Kiss was towed back to

Ventura from Emerald

Cove. A 36-year-old Chi-

nese stainless steel bolt

failed on the fl ange that

holds the dripless system

in place. Fearful of the

other three bolts we opted

to be towed. Vessel Assist did a fan-

tastic job of tying down the shaft so

it would not rotate on the way back.

I’ll admit we both held our breath

when we were towed over the reef at

Emerald in total darkness!

Poor new member Keven Mallon

and crew never made it to Catalina.

His boat pooped out at Anacapa.

Seems that it was a faulty start/stop

switch. As far as I know these were

the only signifi cant mechanical

problems.

The weather was pretty much

good Wednesday afternoon and

the night was a roller. There was a

scramble to get four host boats as

Kevin was supposed to be one. Jeff

Stansfi eld on Joy stepped up. The

Swansons donated leftover beer

from the Yacht Racing Union Cruise

that precedes ours at Cat Harbor.

Kiss, Proud Mary and Windfall were

the other three host boats.

On the Predicted Log compe-

tition Kiss took a fi rst place and

Alegria took a second place. Windfall

took fi rst place from Cat Harbor to

Indian Rock. Rob Miller

once again scored fabu-

lous prizes for the fi shing

contest. Ed Kutchma

took fi rst place, Barbara

Kutchma took second,

and Jim Graves' grand-

son, Max, took third.

Iris took charge of the

Chopped Contest. Con-

testants were given little

wieners in a can, butter

beans, chicharrons, jica-

ma, and fruit cocktail. Jim Graves,

Sandy Swanson, and Jim Graves'

niece took fi rst place. DeeDee

Martin took second, Mary Beck and

Bonnie McKenna took third. Don

Roy, Wally Rutledge, and Sue Van

Gemert had to eat, err I mean judge,

the entries.

Team Sandy Swanson, Paul

Swanson, Gay Garbedian, Dean

Profi t, and Carlos Brea’s granddaugh-

ter, Sidney, took fi rst place in the

carboard boat race.

It takes quite a bit of effort to put

this event on. Securing the location

is not as much hassle as it has been

in the past. The people at Corsair

have us penciled in every year now.

Joel and Steve started the fi res, got

the charcoal lugged to shore and

provided fi rewood. Clean up was

provided by Joel, Steve, Gary Kraft,

Rafael, Heidi, John Berry and Dean

Profi t. I hope I named everyone.

For next year Heidi has agreed to

be in charge of the Chopped Com-

Vice ViewsBy Vice Commodore Bob Beck

I started last month’s

August Vice Views by

saying what a great July

we had at the Ventura

Yacht Club. I think maybe

August may have just

topped July.

The Catalina Cruise

was wonderful as every-

one knows. I particu-

larly loved the night Jim

Graves and the gang sang

songs from Ed Kutchma’s book of

seafaring songs and Rob Miller, with

assistance from Brian McKinna

recited the poem “The Cremation of

Sam McGee” by Robert Service from

memory. We were all around the

fi repit roasting marshmallows and

making S'mores. It was really just

a nice evening with friends, getting

away from our city lives and letting

our hair down. Put this trip down for

next year, it was a wonderful kick-off

for the rest of the summer.

The VYC BBQ Team prepared

and served its second meal of the

summer. The club ran out of chairs

and had to close attendance down

for lack of space so maybe they did

something right. It was gratifying to

see everyone enjoying each other

during the meal and I can tell you

that the volunteers had a blast pre-

paring, cooking and serving. How

about those ribs glazed with Heidi

Franke’s homemade BBQ sauce, or

Mary’s salad and chili with grilled

pineapple. The next BBQ Friday

night will be October 13. You might

oughta make a reservation early.

Just saying.

I had attended the

Junior’s End of Sum-

mer dinner on Thursday

night just prior to the

BBQ Dinner. What a

great event that was! It

was an opportunity to

talk with our very spe-

cial young coaching staff

and see the unbridled

joy of the kids who par-

ticipated. The parents were ok too.

You should put this on your calendar

for next year if you would like to

feel good about our future.

So with Thursday the Junior’s

Dinner, Friday the BBQ Team Din-

ner and just who would be up for a

Dinghy Party on Saturday…………..

well… just about everybody it

seems. Again, the dinning room

ran out of chairs much less table

space for dinner so some visited

the homes in the Ventura Keys

and missed going back to the club.

Frankly, the food spread that Nelly

and PK put together, followed by Sue

and Wayne Nelson’s offering didn’t

leave much room for more food as

we returned to the club for more

eating and Hawaiian music. I had a

great time but the old bones were

really happy to hit the sheets when

nighttime came.

Things will not let down in

September. The Labor Day Cruise is

set for Forney’s Cove on Santa Cruz

Island followed by the Labor Day

From the RearBy Rear Commodore Craig Leverault

The phone woke me

up from a deep sleep

around 7 a.m. the follow-

ing morning. It was Easter

Sunday. A very excited

person on the other end

insisted emphatically that

if I didn’t get down to our

boat, it would be picked

clean! Slowly I start to

recall how and what had

happened. Realizing it

wasn’t a bad dream, and working

backwards in time, I now recall

being driven home by Paul and his

girlfriend in the wee hours of the

morning. (Doris was in Mendicino

at the time). Genie, our beloved

Cal 2-30 had washed over the reef

during the night and was now high

and dry on the beach, and quite the

tourist attraction that Easter morn-

ing. It was then that the magnitude

of what happened hit me. I’m lucky

to be alive! The mega storm not only

decimated our race fl eet but trashed

the bay area, dumped more than 20”

of rain and hurricane force wind on

the coast range. Turning on the local

news and hearing of still missing

boats sent a shiver up my spine.

Genie was not looking too bad

from the outside when we arrived,

save her rudder, barnacles and deep

gouges carved into her waterline.

Her hull-to-deck joint had held, her

rigging was still in place but the

sails, and interior - not so much.

The insurance adjuster deemed her

salvageable, so she was hauled off

the beach, trucked back to Sau-

salito and rebuilt. Paul

renamed her Force 9 to

commemorate our ordeal

and the transformation.

Sometime during the

rebuilding process we

both came to the same

conclusion. We would en-

ter Force 9 in next years

Double Handed Faral-

lones, and fi nish what

we started. I’ll tell you,

nothing tasted better than that cheap

Cook’s Champagne as we fi nally

rounded that ugly gray rock of an is-

land the following spring. We raced

her again in 1984 just to make sure it

wasn’t a fl uke.

Time is a wonderful tool for

perspective. We did some things

right, and lots of things wrong that

day. As in most accidents, it’s usu-

ally a cascade of events that leads to

the fi nal disaster. The NWS was late

forecasting the sever weather. We

were relying on (now) primitive nav-

igation tools, such as dead reckoning

and a RDF (Radio Direction Finder),

which became useless in the tumul-

tuous environment, and zero visibil-

ity. On the return leg after failing

to round the island, we failed again

to accurately assess the set and drift

resulting from such a huge storm.

The entire Golden Gate entrance

had become a lee shore. We were

essentially attempting a dead stick

landing at night with no idea where

the runway was. If we had known

petition. She has already informed

me she is looking at mystery ingre-

dients. Something about this kind

of scares me. I would like a volun-

teer to be in charge of the S’mores,

(buy the ingredients and bring them

ashore every night). Joel brings the

campfi re forks. Also, who wants to

make up the scavenger hunt list?

Who wants to help me come up with

a water activity? Blind Dingy Race,

Downwind Sailing? Anyone have an

activity we can play IN the water?

I’m open to all ideas.

This is your cruise, you make it

a success.

Jan Lawson

earlier in the afternoon our “set” was

so sever, we might have done what

others did, and stayed out for the

night letting the storm take them

north into safe deep water.

Well, I’m here today, so we did

a few things right, I guess. We were

always clipped in, and used short

tethers. However, back then they

did not have the safety latches, and

it did manage to unclip itself on one

occasion! Paul had purchased his

Cal 2-30 only a few months before

the race, and thought it a good idea

to upgrade to a new house battery.

Our VHF worked well throughout

the storm and the CG eventually

found us by our VHF signal. But

the most important thing of all - we

stayed with the boat. It looked pret-

ty grim while were being trashed

on the reef, but that boat fl oated all

night and fl oated right over the reef

and onto the beach in the morning.

Several people have asked me

why I didn’t give up sailing after

such an incident. You know the idea

never occurred to me. I felt embar-

rassed mostly, and didn’t talk about

it much over the years. It remains

today, the worse sailing disaster on

the west coast. Six people lost their

lives that day. We trashed a good

boat. Heroic people risked their lives

for us. Certainly not one of the best

days on the water, but quit sailing?

No way!

Two Great Events in August

Wow, we had two great

events in August!

First was the VYC BBQ

team led by Bob and Mary

Beck and Rafael and Heidi

Francke. It takes a lot of hard

work and planning to put

on a dinner like that for over

100 people. They had a lot of

volunteers who helped cook,

plate, and serve a delicious

dinner. Thank you so much!

Next was the Dinghy party

hosted by Sue Nelson. We owe

her a huge thank you for all

she did to make it a really fun

day. She decorated the club

upstairs and down, opened her

home as one of the ports in

the Keys, and had wonderful

food and drinks.

Thank you to P.K. Edwards and

Nelly Mac for opening their home

in the Keys as the island of Kauai.

Nelly made awesome spring rolls,

satay, and beef skewers. Everything

was delicious.

I hope everyone saw the beauti-

ful paintings of the Hawaiian Islands

that were done by Didi Martin. They

added so much to the decor. If you

missed them, you can catch them at

The Labor Day Luau party. Thank

you Didi.

Prizes were given for the best

decorated dinghy or car. The win-

ners were: Doug and Lorna Lond-

borg for their dinghy and Peter and

Kay Neumann for their car. Congrat-

ulations and thank you to all who

participated.

A special thank you to all the

volunteers who made the events

possible. It takes a village to put on

the events at the club so please con-

sider volunteering in the future. We

have a lot of fun!

Coming up in September is the

Labor Day Luau party on Monday

September 4. Bar opens at 3 p.m.

with BBQ at 4 p.m.

The rest of the year is planned

out by the social committee but

we'd like to invite you to join us at

our meetings. We value your input

and suggestions. Our next meeting

is Sunday, September 24 at 2 p.m.

right before munchies. Hope to see

you there.

Klatt to Skipper Jaded in J-24 Worlds

VYC sailors Deke Klatt, Garrett

Baum and Ian Baldwin will

compete in the J24 World Champi-

onship this September in Toronto.

Deke’s J24, Jaded, will be towed

across country for the event. Join-

ing the crew will be seasoned sailing

friends Taylor Schlub and Lane

Desborough.

This will be Deke’s fi fth go at

the Worlds, having competed last in

2007 in Mexico. Deke’s history with

championship fi nishes is nothing

short of phenomenal; taking top

honors at the North Americans in

2004, two separate 2nd place fi nishes

at the Nationals and 12th at the 2007

Worlds. In 2013, Deke teamed up

with Garrett as his tactician and they

won the US Men’s Championship.

At that regatta, Lane also was on the

crew. Ian and Taylor round out this

team of fi ve, which will hopefully

prove a formidable force.

As of this writing, 63 boats

have registered to compete at Port

Credit Yacht Club on Lake Ontario

September 15-23. Deke and team

would like to thank VYC for their

contribution of $500, Gary Swenson

of Ullman Sails Ventura for donating

a set of sails, and the team’s family

and friends who contributed to the

cause.

Carter Cox, Sydney Brea Qualify for Florida Regatta

The VYC Optimist team had a very successful West Coast

Championship regatta in Santa Bar-bara. The West Coast Championships regatta is a qualifi er for the 2018 Op-timist Team Trails which will be held in Key Biscayne, Florida next April.

Sydney Brea was 37 points away from qualifying with three races to go. The breeze came up a bit and she fi nished strong to earn a spot in the Team Trials. She ended up 21st of 77 and was the 4th place girl. Carter Cox qualifi ed as well by fi nishing 5th overall and 3rd in Blue Fleet. Jack Pointner showed improvement on Sunday and fi nished 40th overall.

In Green Fleet, VYC had fi ve sailors, the most of any club. Victor Dominguez proved that he’s ready to move up to Champs by winning Green Fleet by one point. Ian Clay-ton did great in Green as well and fi nished in 5th place.

Historical Review of the Ventura Cup & Santa Barbara Channel Challenge

By Donald F. Mills, VYC Historian

The Ventura Cup Regatta has been

one of the premiere and longest

running yachting events in the Santa

Barbara Channel area. It brings into

competition the best yacht racing

sailors in the Ventura, Channel Islands

and Santa Barbara Harbors. The 2017

Ventura Cup Regatta, including the

Santa Barbara Channel Challenge will

be sailed the weekend of September

16 and 17.

How the challenge series be-

gan.

In 1968, Channel Islands Yacht

Club challenged Ventura Yacht Club

to a team race around Santa Barbara

Island. Ventura YC accepted the chal-

lenge, but preferred to sail a triangular

course. So a 25-mile triangular course

was set up and three boats were to

represent each club. The victory

would go to the club team with the

lowest total corrected time. Ventura

was represented by a 48-foot cutter

Freedom, the 50-square meter Siboney,

and the Cal 25 Scorpian. CIYC was rep-

resented by Adios a Cal 36, Dilemma,

a Bounty 2, and Christy Lee, a Spencer

35.

The yachts raced for the 25 miles,

with Freedom fi rst to fi nish, followed

by Adios, Dilemma, Siboney, Scorpian,

and Christy Lee. The teams were so

closely matched that Ventura won the

event by less than two minutes on

total corrected time in a race sailed

under the PHRF handicap system.

The following year 1969, Ventura

accepted challenges from both CIYC

and Anacapa Yacht Club. This time it

was decided that each club would be

represented by only one boat, a class

boat, so Cal 34s were selected. Ventu-

ra was aboard Yankee Doddle, Anacapa

was aboard Andorra, and CIYC was

aboard Shrew. All three boats were

maneuvering prior to the start in a

howling east wind when Andorra’s

main ripped in the heavy winds and

Anacapa had to power into the harbor.

Hastily it was decided that Yankee

Doddle would race against Shrew in

match races with the three clubs rotat-

ing crews. Ventura won that series.

The match racing format, similar to

the America’s Cup series (at the time),

continued through the 1978 challenge

regatta. Cal 34s were used 1969-72.

Of the ten annual match race series

Ventura won three while Anacapa

won seven.

The Cup

The Ventura Cup, the offi cial

perpetual trophy, is a large silver cup

or bowl on a rich walnut base and was

donated by Fred Moldenhauer then

president of AVCO Savings, a member

of VYC and winning skipper of the

1969 challenge race.

Changes in Race Format

In 1979 the Ventura Cup Regatta

changed again back to the team racing

format, with fi ve boats from fi ve area

yacht clubs. The change was made

to generate more interest. Additional

interest did occur as evidenced by six

club participation in 1980, seven clubs

1981-85 and then eight clubs 1986 and

beyond. Santa Barbara Yacht Club

dominated the series every year from

Continued on page 20

20 September 2017VYC Forecast

Historical ReviewContinued from page 19

1979-92 except for Anacapa’s wins in

1984, 1985 and 1989.

The 1995-98 regattas were run un-

der a somewhat modifi ed scoring sys-

tem. Five-boat teams were continued,

but only the top three boats from each

team were counted for scoring purpos-

es. There were four different handicap

bands and clubs were required to have

one boat in each of the bands, with a

fi fth “wild card” being allowed in any

one of the bands. Under this format

Ventura Sailing Club and SBYC each

captured the Cup one time and VYC

captured the Cup twice.

The 1999 and 2000 competitions

were run under a still further modi-

fi ed format. There were regatta races

in three classes and at a separate

venue there were “random leg” races,

with boats sailing longer courses

which involved sailing on all points of

the wind. For team title, each club’s

top boat in the random leg was scored

in each race, and the two top boats in

any two of the three regatta classes.

Ventura took the Cup in each of these

two years.

In 2001 racers could enter the

competition individually and did not

have to be part of a yacht club team.

For the team trophy, yacht clubs could

enter as many four-boat teams as

they wished. There were four regatta

classes and a single random leg class.

The format required each yacht club

four-boat team to be in at least three

classes. The winner in 2001 was CIYC.

The 2002-04 formats were similar

to the prior year except that the ran-

dom leg now included two classes. For

the fi rst time clubs entered multiple

teams. The fi rst two of this series were

won by SBYC but in 2004 the Cup

returned to Ventura.

In 2005 the format was again simi-

lar to the prior year except that the

random leg now had six classes and

Ventura captured the Cup for a second

straight year.

The most signifi cant changes in

2006 included two separate regattas;

a team racing regatta for the Ventura

Cup and individual competition regat-

ta in the newly named Santa Barbara

Channel Challenge, each with a sepa-

rate scoring system. The Ventura Cup

regatta included four clubs with four-

boat teams. SBYC emerged the winner

after fi ve races. The Santa Barbara

Channel Challenge had four fl eets in

three races with a total of 23 competi-

tors representing nine clubs. VYC’s

fi rst place winners were Wind Dancer

in Spinnaker A Fleet and Uhambo in

Non-spinnaker Fleet.

In 2007 competition for the

Ventura Cup was sailed with four

boat teams. VYC won back the Cup;

additional places were 2nd to SBYC, 3rd

to a combo of AYC-CIYC-PBYC, and 4th

to SBSC. Winners in the Santa Barbara

Channel Challenge were in Class A

Deception, Class B Tortoise, and Class

C Scooter. A total of 26 boats were

entered.

In 2008 competition for the Ven-

tura Cup was sailed with three boat

teams. VYC retained the Cup and

CIYC placed 2nd. In the Santa Barbara

Channel Challenge winners were

in Class A Rival and Class B Strider.

Again a total of 26 boats were entered.

In 2009 there was increased

Members on the Move

Don Mills and Rena Randall recently returned from a sail-

ing adventure aboard the Victory Chimes windjammer schooner in Maine. They spent a week aboard and stayed in a different anchorage each night, visiting Deer Isle, Mt. Desert Island, Islesboro Island and mainland harbors with shore excur-sions to Wooden Boat’s campus near Brooklin, Acadia Natl. Park, Buck’s Harbor and Castine. The week ended in a windjammer parade off the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse with eight schooners participating. Winds were good the fi rst couple of days, but rain and lighter conditions came midweek. They enjoyed the beauty of the Maine islands (there are over 3,000!) and the various lighthouses on them, as well as the delicious food served by the 4-star cook and meeting other passengers aboard from various parts of the country. The Victory Chimes was built in 1900 and at 130 feet on deck is the largest windjammer still oper-ating in Maine. Owner Kip Files has been its skipper for the last 28 years and is enthusiastic about keeping

her alive and well. Don and Rena made a short

detour on their way home to visit Don’s daughter Carol Mills Cum-mings in Jonesboro, Arkansas. They toured the Blanchard Springs Cav-erns in the Ozark National Forest.

Marina Management ReportBy Port Captain Jeff Beller

Marina Movements

Here are the slip movements this

month. Lynn and Didi Martin have

moved their Beneteau 44 Stella Maris

to a temporary sub-assignment on E

dock. Randy Juengst has moved his

Catalina 320 Venture Too to A dock.

Steve Johnston will also be on A dock

for a short stay with his Ranger Tug

Wildest Dream. Welcome to the VYC

marina.

Volunteers at VYC

I would like to continue on the

theme of encouraging and noting

examples of volunteerism at VYC that

makes the club great. This last month

we had an incident with our race

committee boat (the Leo Robbins)

where the shaft log was leaking badly

and the bilge pump failed. As a result

of much saltwater in the boat there

were some very signifi cant problems

that put the boat out of commission.

Two of our members immediately

stepped up to the challenge. Rafael

Francke, who is one of your Board

Members and also a member of the

Marina Management Committee,

along with Miguel Valdes who is

also a Marina Management member

(Miguel is on the ballot for election to

our Board of Directors this fall.) spent

many hours over several days getting

it operational again. Here is a sum-

mary of what they accomplished:

u Pumped the water out of boat

and cleaned bilge of debris

u Had shaft log nut tightened

u Replaced and tested bilge

pump

u Replaced fuse and fuse holder

for bilge pump

u Rinsed inside of boat and

engine with Salt Away

u Replaced transmission tem-

perature sensor

u Checked and replaced all

zincs in cooling system

u Raised engine cover to pre-

vent further damage to exhaust tube.

u Starter motor was refur-

bished, cleaned and lubed.

u The engine inside bell hous-

ing was washed with Salt Away, and

sprayed with lubricant.

u The ignition key location was

changed.

The two guys saved the club

thousands of dollars and got the boat

back into operation in a matter of

a few days instead of weeks. Please

thank him and Rafi if you see them.

Dry Storage Minimum Usage

Requirements

A reminder: The dry storage

yard (both north and south sides)

have minimum usage requirements

in order to continue renting the

space. These areas are not intended

for long term storage of neglected or

unused boats. If you do not docu-

ment the minimum usage, you may

be asked to vacate your dry storage

spot making it available to another

active club member.

The boat must be used a mini-

mum of four times each calendar

year. The Club Manager maintains a

usage log. The skipper is responsible

for signing the log with the name and

date of usage of the vessel, along with

the event if applicable. To qualify

for a day of usage the boat must be

launched into the water.

Sailboat Race ReportBy Denny Dwire

Continued on page 35

Exciting Changes for Ventura Cup

Some big changes this year for the Ventura Cup and the Santa Barbara Channel Challenge, Sept. 16-17.

VYC Race Chair Denny Dwire ap-pointed committee of Ryan Cox, Dave Trude and Stan Whisenhunt to make improvements to the Ventura Cup and Santa Barbara Channel Challenge.

Key elements this year include:u The Ventura Cup will be a

2-day event with up to three wind-ward-leeward races on Saturday and the random leg Santa Barbara Chan-nel Challenge race on Sunday. Boats which enter the Ventura Cup are auto-matically entered in the Santa Barbara Channel Challenge.u The SBCC race will be a stand-

alone (like AYC’s Tequila Derby). Skipper's who are interested in just random leg racing can enter that SBCC race on Sunday and not be part of Ventura Cup.u There will be just two classes,

A and B, with the break to be an-nounced at the Saturday skipper's meeting. If 24 or more entries, there will be three classes, with each class having the same amount of boats.u Spinnaker boats only. No non-

spinnaker boats. u In the SBCC race, all boats in

A and B classes start together and sail the same course.u You can enter either the

Ventura Cup or the Santa Barbara Channel Challenge by going online to the link below. Register early and save money. Clubs can go online and enter up to three 3-boat teams. The notice of race appears on page 36.

Jaded Wins Sail Fest/Western Regionals

Deke Klatt of Ventura Yacht Club won the Sail Fest Regatta over the weekend, which was also the Western Regionals for J-24s. The two-day, eight race regatta was hosted by Ven-tura Yacht Club.

Klatt won six of the eight races sailed in windy conditions off Ventura Harbor. Garrett Baum, also of VYC, took second place with two fi rsts and six seconds. Susan Taylor of Cal Yacht Club took third.

Results: 1—Jaded, Deke Klatt, 1-1-1-1-1-1-2-2; 2—Disheveled Rogue, Garrett Baum, 2-2-2-2-2-2-1-1; 3—Take Five, Susan Taylor, 4-4-3-4-4-3-4-3; 4—Scallywag, Bengt Johansson, 5-3-5-3-3-5-3-4; 5—Tortoise, Suzi Ramey, 3-5-4-5-5-6-6-6; 6—Thunder Cookie, Vincent Saborio, 6-6-6-6-6-4-5-5.

VYC Regatta #2 and #3 to be Sailed September 9 and 10

Way back in April, VYC Regatta #2 had to be postponed due to ex-tremely high winds. That event will be resailed on the same weekend as VYC Regatta #3, which will be sailed on its original date September 9. Each day will be scored as a separate regatta AND trophies will still be awarded for the entire series (Regat-tas #1, #2, #3).

Leaders after Regatta #1 on Janu-ary 28 earlier this year are Rival over Menace and Fat Tuesday in Class A; Gumbercules over California Zephyr,

Good Company, and Wai’lani in Class B; and Disheveled Rogue over Within Reach, Camp David, and Tortoise in Class C.

Wet Wednesdays ContinueThis popular summer series will

continue through September 13. If you have not made it to any Wednes-days yet this summer, it is possible to enter the remaining races individu-ally. Just enter online so PRO Pam Phillips knows you are coming. Go to venturayachtclub.org and follow the links (Water>Racing>Regatta Net-work)
