Housed in the beautiful surroundings of the 19th Century Dock building The Jury Room is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10.30am to 6pm serving a range of speciality coffees and fair-trade teas and snacks. Delicious homemade cakes & scones make it an ideal place for elevenses, to meet friends or find quiet, warm refuge from the chaos of shopping!

Paddy Casey has been at the forefront of the Irish music scene since his debut album Amen (So Be It) in 1999, while his second release Living became the biggest seller in Ireland out-selling U2.In more recent times Paddy has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with that very band on their Vertigo Tour, he has had week long sold out residencies in

Dublin’s prestigious Olympia Theatre and RDS. He has even been invited onto and performed on the Hit American CBS Chat Show “The Late Show” with David Letterman.Paddy is currently writing the follow up to his last award-winning album Addicted to Company (Part One), for which he won Best Male at the Meteor Awards.

Harmonica players extraordinaire Rick Epping and Mick Kinsella team up with fiddle and guitar maestro Seamie O’ Dowd for a very special performance of Irish traditional tunes and songs with the odd American old timey or blues tune thrown in!

Rick Epping, a native of California, and All-Ireland Harmonica champion has played with musical greats as varied as Bluegrass founder Bill Monroe, Texas bluesman Mance Lipscomb and Irish accordionist Joe Cooley. He plays harmonica and concertina (often at the same time!) and jaws harp.

Mick Kinsella, one of Ireland’s best kept musical secrets, is regarded as one of the best traditional players in Ireland on both diatonic and chromatic style harmonica. Originally from Carlow and now living in west Clare, he is highly respected both in the traditional music world and also the other musical genres of jazz, blue grass and rock. Mick has recorded with the likes of Altan, Micheal O Suilleabhain,Mick Hanly & Billy Connolly.

Seamie O’ Dowd grew up steeped in the tradition of Sligo fiddling, early on expanding his repertoire to include new world traditions. Former member of Dervish, Seamie is as accomplished playing blues on slide guitar as he is playing jigs and reels. He is also a fine singer.

A parable of the Celtic Tiger, The Quare Land examines motivation, greed and money in a humourous, caustic and incisive way. Set in a house in Bawnboy, Cavan, The Quare Land centres on the character Hugh Pugh (Des Keogh), who is about to take his first bath in four years. His bathing is disturbed by Rob McNulty (Fair City’s Frank O Sullivan), a developer from Ballinamore in Leitrim

wanting to buy a field. Hugh conducts negotiations from his bathtub and is reluctant to sell while McNulty pulls out all the stops to complete the sale. The quick fire banter between the two characters escalates into an epic finale as both try to reason each other into submission. The show sold out a two week run at the Galway Arts Festival 2010. Directed by Rod Goodall.

MUSIC NETWORK presents GATO AZULAn intimate café style jazz experience

Gato Azul is an exciting new instrumental quartet performing music that ranges from Brazil to Bulgaria passing via the Mediterranean and using Jazz improvisation as a unifying element to these diverse musical languages. It’s also the latest project from the industrious Italian Francesco Turrisi, now developing a reputation as an accordionist and frame drummer par excellence to match his well documented piano capabilities. Joining him are percussionist Robbie Harris, whose bodhran sounds remarkably at home in this rhythmic

terrain, the mighty jazz double bass of Michael Coady, and Lucas Gonzalez, an exceptional Argentinian guitarist now resident in Dublin, who brings authenticity and a flamencoesque brio to the table. Seating will be in a café style.

Best of ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival Straight from Berlin to LeitrimThe poetry film is as old as film-making itself. It brings together two art forms that could not be more different – poetry films combine the sound-worlds of the art of words with the visual power of cinema. The ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival, a project initiated by Literaturwerkstatt Berlin, has established itself as an international forum for short films whose subject is poems, whether in their content or form or their aesthetic approach. Since 2002 the festival takes place every two years in Berlin and presents a wide range of films – from animated to experimental films, from video to media art. This programme will showcase a selection of the festival’s most interesting films from the last few years. The programme is presented by Juliane Otto of Literaturwerkstatt Berlin.This project is supported by Goethe – Institut Ireland.

“A Champion’s League semi final special”- The Last Wednesday moves to Thursday this month. One of Ireland’s greatest songwriters Mick Hanly, combined with Arty McGlynn’s tasty virtuosity on guitar and the brilliant Nollaig Casey’s on fiddle. Lately, rekindling a musical relationship that led to two of Hanly’s best albums, Warts and All, and Happy Like This, their show has all the hallmarks of a musical road well travelled and, with Nollaig Casey joining in, points to journeys new.

Mick Hanly was lead singer with Moving Hearts and his songs have been recorded by such luminaries as Hal Ketchum, Christy Moore, Mary Black and Dolores Keane.

Arty McGlynn is one of the finest and most sought after guitar players in Ireland, with a unique understanding of the music he performs. He has played with such luminaries as Van Morrison, De Dannan, and Patrick Street.

Nollaig Casey started her professional career with the RTE Symphony Orchestra and then joined Planxty in 1980. In recent years Nollaig has recorded and toured with a variety of groups and musicians including, Moving Hearts, Liam O’Flynn, Mary Black and Elvis Costello.

Dermot Bolger’s work is often concerned with the articulation of the experiences of working-class characters who, for various reasons, feel alienated from society. Bolger questions the relevance of traditional nationalist concepts of Irishness, arguing for a more plural and inclusive society.

Carlo Gebler is the author of several novels, short story collections, a memoir, a narrative history, and two travel books, as well as several plays for both radio and the stage. He has also written for children and reviews widely.

June Considine is an author of novels for adults and children. Her adult novels under her own name include When The Bough Breaks (New Island Books) and Deceptions (New Island Books). Under the pseudonym Laura Elliot she has written The Prodigal Sister (July, 2009, Avon, Harper Collins) and The Stolen Child (July 2010, Avon, Harper Collins). Author of novels, short story collections and best selling memoir The Home Place Brian Leyden is a regular contributor to RTE. This year’s music is by the legendary blues guitarist Ed Deane with Trevor Knight on keyboard.

Shot through with caustic wit and sharp home truths, ‘The Parting Glass’ is an examination of Ireland over the past two decades, and Thierry Henry’s left hand!

In 1990 Dermot Bolger’s play ‘In High Germany’ astutely and angrily captured the mood of a pre-Celtic Tiger generation forced to emigrate due to economic necessity. It used the motif of soccer and the story of the Irish team’s success in Euro ‘88 to tell the life stories of three friends up to the point where they emigrate from an Ireland on the edge of financial collapse. Now in his new standalone play, which also works as a sequel, these characters are re-united in Stade de France on Nov 18th 2009 for the World Cup play-off.

If ‘In High Germany’ was an odyssey through the foreignness of Germany, ‘The Parting Glass’ is an odyssey through the foreignness of the Ireland that emerged in their absence, the boom and bust story of the nation that had room for them, and the story of old friends on the cusp of fifty stopping to make sense of their lives, loves and losses, to try and fathom their place as exiles and to take stock of their futures.

The above words were used to describe ‘Across the Black River’, the first duo recording by world renowned fiddler Kevin Burke and the wonderful composer, arranger and musician, Cal Scott. Kevin Burke (Bothy Band, Patrick Street and The Celtic Fiddle Festival) and Cal Scott have got together again to record SUITE, a follow-up to that highly acclaimed first release.

Their new release is a combination of traditional, contemporary and self-penned pieces and contains 10 traditional tunes arranged in four movements for string quartet.

His elderly neighbour Imelda does her best to drive him indoors, but there’s no talking to him. Then one day Paddy is annoyed to find a troubled young man called Tony sitting on his bench. Despite his reluctance to connect with anybody, Paddy strikes up a grudging acquaintance with Tony and discovers in him a damaged soul struggling to deal with the past and fearful of the future. Set in a concrete landscape on the edge of playing fields, Here We Are Again Still reveals itself as a moving and funny play about two broken men trying to make their way back from the margins. Sean LynchSean Lynch is an artist whose work uncovers and magnifies marginal and almost-forgotten histories. For his exhibition at The Dock he presents two artworks related to the Irish landscape. Since 2005 Lynch has been searching for the remains of a monument to writer Flann O’Brien in the Kerry mountains. His findings will be presented as artefacts, slide projections and photographs in the gallery space. Also included in the show is Latoon, a 2006 video about the preservation of a whitethorn bush from the construction of the M18 motorway in Clare featuring folklorist Eddie Lenihan.Sean Lynch was educated in fine art at the Stadelschule, Frankfurt, and Limerick School of Art and Design. He is represented by the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery in Dublin, and now divides his time between Berlin, Limerick and Dublin. Recently his work has been exhibited at Neugerriemschneider, Berlin, Camden Arts Centre, London, St. Paul Street Gallery, Auckland and the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin. www.seanlynchinfo.com

Brian HandAnachrony is an exhibition which looks at a day in the life of a suffragette activist who visited Ireland in the summer of 1912 and was sentenced to 5 years hard labour in Mountjoy jail for trying to set fire to the Theatre Royal Hippodrome and Winter Garden. Hand draws on links between the courthouse, theatre and prison to remember, re enact and examine protest and dissent. Anachrony is made specifically for The Dock and contains photography,sculpture and writing.Brian Hand is an artist who is a graduate of NCAD and the Slade School of Art and has made many projects over the last 20 years, his most recent solo exhibition was Little War at the Kilkenny Arts Festival in 2008. Hand is a lecturer in art and design for IT Carlow at the Wexford Campus School of Art and Design, Wexford.

LIFE DRAWING FOR ADULTSThe weekly self-guided drawing group, which works with a life model in exploring life drawing, continue on Saturdays 11am – 4 pm. LEAVING CERTIFICATE REVISION DAYNEWPerforming Arts students from IT Sligo will host a revision day on Friday 8th April for secondary school students completing the English Paper in the Leaving Certificate 2011. The revision workshop is designed to help students explore texts creatively, discuss and share ideas, collaborate and to plan and enact responses to prescribed texts. Leaving Certificate participants will have the opportunity to explore a text in depth and to engage in a learning forum with students from other schools. They will explore a scene(s) from Hamlet and a selection of poems by WB Yeats, Adrienne Rich, Emily Dickinson, Eavan Boland and Patrick Kavanagh. CONOR LAMBERT’S PUPPETRY JUNKSHOP Conor Lambert will conduct a puppetry workshop at The Dock this spring with the aim of encouraging experimentation by highlighting the abundance of possibilities puppetry brings by using the materials we are surrounded by and applying our imagination.The workshop will focus on characterization and manipulation techniques - breathing life into inanimate every-day objects, bringing voice and character to an object, creating illusions with puppets through an invisible solid floor (fix point), weightlessness, manipulation techniques in flying, floating, swimming, fire and water illusions. He will also demonstrate collaborative puppetry, where two or more puppeteers operate one character.The workshop will utilise everyday materials and fabrics such as large plastic bottles, old clothes, gaffa tape, old boots, hats, scarves, sweeping brushes.Workshop will take place on a date to be confirmed. Showstoppers ConcertThe acclaimed 70+ voice SATB choral group established in 1999 and based in Carrick-on-Shannon with singers of all ages from Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford, is performing in St Patrick’s Church, Mohill, on Thursday, 24th March (Compère Carmel Fitzpatrick O’Neill), and in St Mary’s Church, Carrick-on-Shannon, on Friday, 25th March (Compère Mary Blake), both at 8pm sharp. Compiled by Joe Moore and under the direction of Monica O’Gorman and Fintan Farrelly, the programme is a mix of Broadway, sacred, classical and popular selections and features a number of locally-based soloists including Gavin Sweeney, Brian McGee and Lorraine McLoughlin.
